"Improve Your Speed Reading Skills" and breeze through books, newspapers, textbooks, reports, webpages _ whatever you need to read, however you want to read it.
Useful, simple and practical. There is no magic behind speed reading, but a few simple technics can show results pretty fast.
I found out to be a slow reader, I mainly read in English despite it's not my mother tongue. Fast forward, when I started the book, the assessments gave me a consistent 150 words per minute (wpm). A typical book page contains 250 words... so you can do the maths... At the end of the book, with very little practice and by applying a few simple technics, I increased 40%, 210 wpm, consistently. Comprehension has also increased from 60 to 80%. Yes, a very basic principle is that if you increase your reading speed, you need to focus more, therefore less chance to get your head drifting.
And this is just the beginning of the journey.
The book also makes good emphasis on how to better retain the information, long-term wise, and this is probably the most challenging part as it requires new habits, but reasonable.
I'm very frustrated not to have had this knowledge 25 years ago... but at least I can pass it now to my children so they can be much more efficient during their careers.
A year or so a go I read 1000 books in 1000 days. It is an achievement I am understandably proud of. However, over recent months I have got out of the habit of reading as prolifically. Vontrary to what most people believe, reading slowly does not mean you read more comprehensively. In fact, learning to read at speed can cause your comprehension to increase. Therefore, i felt it was time to reacquaint myself with those principles and techniques which had been so helpful in the past. Chambers book dispells many myths and shows how we can make better use of our eyes and how a guide can avoid falling into the trap of constantly re-reading a text. For me, the learning points were the importance of knowing what you are looking for when you are reading, practice reading at speed and consistently work on comprehension. There are some great chapters on mind-mapping, vocabulary and memory and Chambers clearly practice what he preaches.
I love how they give you activities to do to help estimate your reading speed especially after learning new concepts allowing you to actually see the difference in speed .They also clear the misconception and of how one lacks comprehension when they speed read
