I walked into this book already drawn to a character who is closer to my age. Most of the books I read feature female protagonists who are young, fit, and confident to spare. To have a fifty-something mother navigating one of the biggest life-changing events of her life was a breath of fresh air!
Julia Calloway introduces us to Helen Price, a divorced 57-year-old who is struggling with her sanity—or is she? What Helen believes are menopause hot flashes turn out to be something much more magical, and with an adversary lurking nearby, she must learn to trust her body, her newfound magic, and her wits. Along the way, she also has to overcome years of self-doubt and discover that she is lovable, worthy, and capable of achieving whatever she sets her mind to.
The banter between the characters is snarky and swift. As a reader, I appreciated the short, to-the-point dialogue. I could easily picture myself sitting in the bookstore, sipping tea and making plans alongside the characters.
As a woman of a certain age, I found this book to be a refreshing take on aging, acceptance, and discovering your own strength. Helen’s journey is a reminder that magic, adventure, and new beginnings don’t have an expiration date.

Who wouldn’t love a flying toaster spelling out the words “answer the call”
This book was everything magical, friendship, love and community. I absolutely enjoyed reading this witchy tale. I was so lucky to receive this as an arc. It’s fun and quirky and I love when they end on a happy note. And Helen finding her love later in life is adorable! Must read!
