Midnight Fire was a good read for me. I can honestly say that the story line kept me interested the whole way through.
For me what LMR shined through with in this book was the characters.
I LOVED Jack. He’s changed a lot over the years and is not the golden boy of his past. He is big, handsome and battle warn. Over the course of this book he proves himself in many ways.
Summer was an amazing heroine, she has an awful backstory that tugged on my heartstrings but despite that, she managed to pull herself up and she now owns a successful political blog/webzine called Area 8 that blows the whistle on political wrongdoers.
Jack was very intense and he had every right to be. His whole family accept his sister Isabel and 100’s of others were gunned downed and then blown up in a hotel where his father was planning to announce that he will be running for president . Jack was presumed dead along with his family but was saved by a phone call from his boss. Since then he has been deep undercover trying to get find out who is responsible for this deadly massacre. This all happens in book 3, Midnight Secrets.
Summer was devastated when she found out that Jack and his family were dead. As a child Summer had visited the Delvauxe’s house and she loved being around a true family who treated her like one of their own. Later on while she was at college she met up with Jack and they dated for all of a week. He was her first lover and she fell hard and fast for Jack thinking he was the one. Things did not work out for them because Jack was a man whore and dumped her for her roommate completely breaking her heart.
The story starts out at the funeral of Hector Blake, one of the villains from Midnight Secrets. Summer was leaving the funeral when she happened to see a homeless man. Once she got a good look, she knew that he was none other than Jack Delvauxe. She tries to reach him but he managed to slip away.
Jack is worried that Summer will spill the beans that he is still alive. He ends up sneaking into her apartment and waits until she arrives to try and stop her from letting anyone know that he is alive. His mission would be ruined and he’d be a dead man.
These two end up joining forces to find out who these traitors are. I loved reading how they went about getting the information needed to bring these men down.
Of course many characters from this series join in the hunt too. I really enjoyed getting glimpses of them again. Each one has a certain abilities that help track the bad guys down.
I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the villains in this one. What they had planned was VERY interesting and to tell the truth it was quite scary. For me I did not learn enough about these men, what made them tick and why.
We did not get a whole lot of love/sex scenes in this one, which under the circumstances I could understand why. The ones we got were VERY well done and sensual. I could feel how Jack was falling hard for Summer at the same time, I could feel Summer’s worries that Jack would break her heart again.
In the end we get some good action but it was done WAY too fast for my tastes. I was wanting and expecting a whole lot more than what was offered. I do have to add that it did indeed end happy for Summer and Jack.

Midnight Fire picks up where Midnight Secrets ends with Jack Delvaux alive and well. We met Jack briefly in Midnight Secrets, as Isabel's brother, who was thought killed in the “Washington Massacre”. Jack Delvaux “died” in the Washington Massacre, the massacre that took the lives of over 700 people, including all of Jack’s family with the exception of his sister Isabel.
In reality, Jack has been living as a homeless person, trying to find out who was behind the massacre and why. During a political funeral Jack is seen by Summer, who runs a very successful blog that exposes political corruption. Summer was smitten with the golden boy of the Delvaux family as a young girl, and fiercely loved him as a young adult, until he broke her heart and disappeared. Now she is aware that Jack is alive and clearly into something that she is determined to uncover.
Soon Jack and Summer are working together with the rest of the Midnight team, and (FBI Agent) Nick, to uncover another planned attack on America from traitors within an American Government agency. Once again we get some suspense, action, and steamy love scenes.
I was a bit dismayed with the ending, it seemed to just.....end. I would have liked a couple of the story lines to be a bit more wrapped up, perhaps we'll hear more in future books?!
Regardless, I will read these books as long as Lisa Marie Rice continues to write them. I love this series and hopefully we'll get more stories.....I really, really need FBI Agent Nick's book (soon!!)....PLEASE!!!

Let me first warn you that this book is a continuation of a story from the previous book, Midnight Secrets. If you haven't read that one yet, please read it before this one. Will you be hopelessly lost if you don't? Probably not, but this story will have much more of an impact if you read Midnight Secrets first.
This book is about 31-33(?) year-old (I'll get to that later) Summer Redding and 34-36(?) year-old Jack Delvaux. Stop reading this review NOW if you don't want to read any spoilers--some of which were already revealed in the book blurb.
Anyhow, Summer and Jack have known each other since she was 12 years old and she briefly lived with her aunt who was then married to Hector Blake (the bad guy from Midnight Secrets). Hector lived next door to the Delvaux's, the Kennedy-esque family who were gunned down in the Washington Massacre 6 months ago (not sure of the timeline). Gauky Summer spent a lot of time with the happy, loving Delvaux family (her own deceased parents were pitiful globe trotting hippie junkies) and of course she developed quite a crush on the charismatic, handsome, 3-years-her-senior Jack. When Summer was a pretty 18 year-old freshman in college, she spent one blissful week with the suddenly-aware-of her Jack, who took her virginity and her heart, but then moved on to greener pastures (her roommate!). (Jack was a big man slut at the time).
Summer moved on, developed a highly successful career as a political blogger, and Jack moved on (and grew and changed tremendously) when he joined the CIA. Summer had a few relationships--nothing serious--because she was never going to let her heart be broken again. Ever.
Then she finds out that Jack is alive! He didn't die in the Massacre with the rest of his family like everyone thinks. But he's living off the grid--why? And boy is there a story to tell regarding the Massacre...but Jack must remain 'dead' until he, and now Summer, can prove what they suspect. Homegrown terrorists in cahoots with another world power out to destroy the US? But time is running out. Both Jack (if he shows his face) and Summer have huge targets on their backs. Can Jack protect Summer from the bad guys who want her eliminated before she can break the story? Can Jack convince Summer that he is a changed man who has grown up and lost his man-slut ways and knows there's only one woman for him--Summer? Can Summer learn to trust Jack and open her heart again? Can Jack and Summer, and the Midnight guys (yay!) save the USA?
I definitely enjoyed LMR's latest--it had me hooked by the first chapter. I liked, respected, admired and felt sorry for Summer (what a crappy childhood!), and I couldn't blame her for not trusting Jack at first. Jack was a randy asshat in college, but I guess years in the CIA straightened him out. But how could he convince her he wasn't the same guy? I loved how their relationship developed--it seemed honest and believable, and yeah, it did turn hot!
I also loved the suspense aspect of the story. It was easy to follow and shockingly believable and scary. I think something like this could really happen. It had me thinking...
There were only two things that had me a little miffed...
This was probably an editing error but it still took me out of the story a bit and I have a thing about establishing the ages of the characters. Summer first meets Jack when she's 12 and he's 15. So he's 3 years older than her. He beds her in college when she's 18. That means he's 21. When he reappears it's mentioned that 15 years have passed. That would make her 33 and him 36. But when Summer sees him he's described this way: Cheekbones hard and chiseled, the skin hollowed out under them. He looked older than his thirty-four years, like he'd been a prisoner of war in a far off land. That's because he's really 36!:)
I know, that's nit-picking, but it annoys me.
The other is in regard to the ending. I was all revved up, really enjoying the suspense part of the story and the build up to the conclusion about stopping the bad guys. But it seems like it was over too fast and wrapped up too quickly. I guess I wanted a little more. It almost seemed like the author was over the word count and had to tidy up things fast. Sigh. And even though there was an epilogue I felt the same way about it. I've noticed that LMR's epilogues are not her forte. Oh well, I guess I can live with it since I enjoyed the other 95% of the book!
Not sure where she can go from here with the Midnight books (maybe a story about FBI agent Nick?) but I'm up for a few more! A solid 4 stars.

When Jack found Summer again, he wasn't letting her go like he did as a stupid young college boy. It took Summer a little to see that Jack had changed and for the better. When they got together, they were amazing and hot and sweet.
The story is a continuation of what happened in his sister Isabel's book. The stuff that happened if it was real life would have me hiding under my bed. I wanted to turn my kindle off because it was messing with me. Great story with lots of suspense, action, romance, and all the crew from the previous books. I hope there's one more planned for Nick.

Overall, not a great read. The romance was so bland, it was missing the sexual tension and passion I am used to from this author. The hero in particular was disappointing, normally her heroes are 100% head over heels for the heroine as soon as they meet them. Instead, he humped and dumped her when she was a virgin college freshman, then thinks she is decent when he meets her again - I just didn't see him having an intense attraction to her, she seemed more convenient which is not what I want in a LMR book.

Another in the Men of Midnight series. Same scenario with a bright career woman helped out by the over-protective alpha hero as the fight for justice and the American way. Lather, rinse, repeat.
In this one we have the manwhore Jack who broke Summer's heart in college years ago by going to bed with her wherein she falls in love only to have him hooking up with her roommate one week later. Ouch! It's about fifteen years later, and he feels really bad about it.
Current times she's a hot political science blogger, and he's ex-CIA. A few of the other characters pop up from the series but not as much as I would like.
In the nick of time, the Midnight crew save the US from treasonous Americans and the Chinese.
Did I buy Jack's admission of love and need for Summer? Eh, why not. At least she confronts him on his BS.

Lisa Marie Rice is the author that made me start reading romance and fall in love with alpha male Hs. My first book by this author was Midnight Run. Unfortunately, I have seen a dramatic decrease in the quality of her books. The characters and story just aren't cutting it anymore. They have become stale. This book was no exception.
From the beginning I had a huge issue with the story. The H and h knew each other when they were teens. The H was a huge manwhore and slept with the h for 1 week. He took her virginity and after a week shows up to her dorm room to take out her roommate. That was how the h realized that the H had dumped her. He didn't even bother to break up with her!! And the donkey h never got over him!! This makes me so mad. Using a person, taking her virginity, and then quickly discarding her is the epitome of vile. I hate a pathetic h and this one infuriated me. She was too hung up on this a-hole. The H went through a big transformation and was no longer the fast and loose playboy. But this didn't stop me from not liking him. He wore piss covered clothes to stay hidden as a homeless man. I could not get over this bc when he took it off he would not shower. This was gross bc he did make out with the h. The h was so selfish, all she cared about was getting a scoop so she could win the Pulitzer. This was brought up over and over and over again.
The H never sought out the h or think out her after the breakup. The only reason he even spoke to her again was to keep her from sharing any info on the conspiracy that was unfolding. Plus, he was really turned on bc he was near her and even admitted it was bc he was without women for a long time. She was just a convenient body that was around. Then he quickly turns around and wants to marry her. Where did that come from!?!? It was so abrupt and random.
And then there is Felicity. Super annoying Felicity, who we had to hear over, and over, and over again about her brilliance. Every person mentions 10x about how smart she is. I hate this character. I did not like Felicity on Arrow before but I absolutely loathe her now.
The ending was so sudden, I was shocked. The whole book was a lengthy unfolding of this huge plan and it ended in 3 pages. This book was a let down. I really hope Ms. Rice's books improve.

The ending was so sudden, I was shocked. The whole book was a lengthy unfolding of this huge plan and it ended in 3 pages. This book was a let down. I really hope Ms. Rice's books improve.

Summer Redding is the owner of the political blog/webzine called Area 8. With both her parents dead and being an only child, Summer leads an almost solitary existence. No men that entered into her life since her non-relationship with Jack Delvaux, who was killed in a terrorist attack that had rocked Washington DC, had ever measured up to her expectations. That is exactly who she runs into at a funeral that she would rather not have attended.

Midnight Fire is a book that holds the remnants & whispers of the Lisa Marie Rice that I used to know and love. There is a strong alpha hero of course. And then there’s the good sex; this time around on an airplane! The only thing that perhaps was different was the heroine Summer, who was feisty in her own little ways. Not the usually demure type of heroine that Lisa Marie Rice is famous for. For one thing Summer is strong and independent, but that doesn’t mean she is stupid enough to walk into disaster. One thing that stood out for me in this story was how Jack leveled with Summer when danger came calling, how he had just told her how things stood rather than ordering her to stay put. That spoke to me on a level that I wouldn’t have thought possible, but there it was.
Summer and Jack are both likable characters, but I wouldn’t say that there was anything extraordinary about them that touched me except for the fact that they both have the zeal to do what’s right, no matter the consequences. What I miss most from the Lisa Marie Rice novels that I used to love is the sizzling and at time scorching variety of sexual tension that exists between her characters. And Lisa Marie Rice is an author that delivers spectacularly on that. The uber protectiveness that comes along with the sexy, drop-you-down-to-your-knees variety of heroes that graced her novels. The ultra feminine & yet strong in the ways that count heroines who enter your heart right from the get go. Through it all, Lisa Marie Rice was an author that delivered on the suspense aspect as well, though one might not have the hardest time figuring out the bad guys in her novels. All that somehow seems to have changed with the recent novels that have been published and I for one mourn the loss of it all.
Recommended for those who love novels by Lisa Marie Rice. For those that love a strong hero and an equally determined heroine.

Reading this so soon after the previous book made this even more enjoyable. This is Jack's story and it's so good. We get some glimpses of Jack in the third book but now we get his full story. Summer Redding is just the woman to tame him. There's a nice blend of suspense and romance here.

I'm nervous to read this. One thing I love about LMR's books is that once the hero sees his girl he is all in. As in ALL IN. No sleeping around, no walking away, no man-whoring. Do I want to read this and burst my LMR bubble? Hmmmmm not too sure.
I eventually caved and read this and my thoughts .....
Midnight Fire picks up where Midnight Secrets ended and you're thrown right into the middle of an ongoing story, so it's essential that Midnight Secrets is read prior to this one.
I was prepared to dislike Jack after reading a few reviews - in his youth he was a total slut and left Summer heartbroken after a brief fling in college. I HATED what he did to her, sleeping with her for a week then moving on to her room mate right. In. Front. Of. Her!! That really pissed me off. BUT he was a kid in college - you know the one .... have a dick, find it works and set off to wear it out. Yes, he chewed her up and spat her out but they were youngsters, both (more so Jack) had a heck of a lot of growing up to do. He took their week together as just that, nothing serious, nothing permanent, he made her no promises - he banged her and moved on. So, the question for the ages - do I hold that against him? Is he not allowed to make a mistake? Of course he is so I got over myself and am glad I did, I ended up liking this.
Years later he has suffered the loss of virtually his entire family in the most horrific way (this is explained in more depth in Midnight Secrets). This loss, and his years in the CIA left him a changed and hardened man. And at this point is where LMR turns things around. Once Jack reconnected with Summer he was all in. As in ALL IN, just like I have come to expect from LMR.
Summer is such a strong, but sweet heroine. She pulled no punches and let him know exactly what he had done to her, and I love how he owned it. No excuses, no denial. I also loved his character growth. This is what saved him as a character for me.
"You broke my heart," she said finally.
There it was, Jack had been expecting it. He met her gaze directly. "I know I did."
They stared at each other and Summer broke the link. Jack wasn't going to back down, make excuses. He'd behaved badly. He HAD broken her heart. He didn't have any excuse other than he'd been a dick. He'd been a kid. Okay, technically a man. Definitely of age. But considering what he had been through since then, he'd been like a careless child who'd had fun with a toy but tossed it away when a newer, shinier toy came along. He'd deeply regretted it and if she wanted to scream at him, hit him, he and no objections. He deserved it."
Whilst I enjoyed the book I felt let down by the rushed and abrupt ending with a epilogue that was so far from an epilogue it left me frustrated. LMR took her time in building up their reconnection and new relationship and just when we're getting to the good stuff it ended. I know LMR is not known for fulfilling epilogues but on this occasion a good one and a slower ending was really necessary. I'm assuming the story arc will continue with another book in the series because the resolution offered in Midnight Fire wasn't enough, and a felt kinda cheated.

Let's jump straight into the plot!
This book was really good.
Romantic suspense has been my thing lately and this one was awesome! I actually did that taboo thing where i didn't realise it was the 4th book and just jumped straight into it.
To be perfectly honest, it didn't actually spoil or confuse me, so this can be read as a standalone!
Okayyyy, So this book is adult and there's a fair bit of language in here, and sexual situations too but it all fits in the adult genre as some parts can be descriptive.
These characters were amazing, the plot seriously complex (as in- Ms. Rice...i blame you if the terrorist attacks that you imagined actually occurs, you thought of that so well and I shudder at the possibilities!)
Summer is actually a female protagonist that didn't give me a headache. I mean, she's not kick butt but she's mentally strong and mentally sharp too. Her intelligence really shone through. Yes, she was a bit silly at times but she always redeems herself.
Jack...is a stud! At first I really didn't like him. I hate the idea of a guy who likes to sleep around and breaks girls' hearts.
"...Jack was like a sun god, too magnificent to stay with a lonely freshman."
...and so he slept with her roommate and two other girls. *sigh*
but I have to say! He definitely changed in the book and became a guy who was totally swoon- worthy afterwards. I just love how Rice portrayed Jack growing up into his own man.
Don't be fooled this is a romance so while there is a lot going on in terms of plots and intrigues, there is also a focus on the romantic aspect of the characters.
My only beef in this book was that the end felt rushed. I mean we literally agonize over the situation the entire book and then when all finally comes to fruition, it's like BAM! the end.
I had a moment where i stared at my tablet, blinking and thinking...is that it? but oh well!
Rice can definitely write a good story and now I'm curious of first 3 books!
Side note- A thing that made me laugh was the references to Doctor who, Hunger Games and Game of thrones. The author fan-girled in the her own book! hehe respect.

No, No, No and No Okay it's no secret that I love the midnight books and that I hunt down every single Lisa Marie Rice book because of her delicious alpha heroes so what was that?
Yeah I get that the hero changed and all and that was in his younger years bla bla bla .. I get it but that's not what I expect from a midnight book nor is it what I want. Some change is good but a hero that cheated before and has that kind of character is a major turn off and no amount of justifications would make me like him .. no I want him beating at his chest screaming you're mine and being completely, totally and madly in love with the heroine and I'm not ashamed to admit it *okay maybe a little* so yeah obviously I wasn't a fan of the hero and that ruined this book for me.
That aside the plot got a little too creepy with the gas/spray weapon thing and I found it a little unbelievable that it was even detected. Hopefully the next midnight book will not disappoint.

Wow!!! Probably should not have been reading this on the anniversary of 9/11. I already question half the "news" and all the articles I read on social media. This book made me realize how scary our world could actually be!
Behind the plot of high ranking government leaders being corrupt the reader finds a pretty amazing love story. Summer never really had a family and Jack grew up in a loving home with great parents. When Summer and Jacks paths crossed in college she quickly fell in love with her childhood friend. Jack, however, didn't let himself fall in love and left Summer with a broken heart.
Now they find themselves together after 15 years have past....and now they are fighting for their lives!!! Can Summer trust Jack now?! Will they be able to find the proof they need to survive?!

I always enjoy this author's romance novels. Her heroes are all alpha, protective males. Lots of them work in the law enforcement. Her heroines usually seem to need protection and help at first, but they turn out to be strong women after all. The good thing about this book was that it had all the elements that people expect from LMR's romantic suspense novels. There's action, there's mystery, there's a huge conflict of an international level, and there's always intelligence needed in solving the case. All in all, this is a pretty good book that's standard of the author.
The reason why I am not rating this any more than three red hearts is the hero himself. Seriously. I mean, he definitely treated the heroine wrong. He made douche moves that even I couldn't get past at. I wish there would have been a lengthy part of him groveling and begging for another chance. Instead, the sins of the past kind of got buried because of the suspense aspect of the story. I think that out of LMR's heroes, this one is my least favorite.
I would still recommend this book because it does have a good story and the exciting parts are actually enjoyable. If you've followed this series, you mustn't miss this installment at all.

Anyone who has followed my reviews knows that I'm pretty much the driver of the Lisa Marie Rice fan bus so you will all have some idea of how much this pains me.
This title was only okay for me.
One of those books where it seems to go too fast and too slow at the same time.
Summer Redding is the very successful founder of a whistleblower website. She has a long history that didn't end well with Jack Delvaux. The golden boy next door who turned into a CIA operative has a lot to make up for with Summer and no time to do it in. Presumed dead in a terrorist attack for the last six months he is shocked to come face to face with Summer and it means that his cover is blown.
What follows is a break neck paced thriller of international intrigue, homegrown terror cells and dirty politicians. With Jack and Summer right in the eye of the storm.
Everything was happening in such a compressed window of time that it made it hard for me to really buy into the seriousness of what was happening in the book and the ending came so quickly that I was kind of shocked.
Of course this is but one book in a series and I've loved all her other titles and really am looking forward to the next offering.... but this particular one didn't quite match my fangirl expectations.

The fourth book in the Men of Midnight series by Lisa Marie Rice. Summer Redding is stunned when she sees a dead man. Jack Delvaux was killed in the Washington Massacre. But now he is alive and telling her an unbelievable story. When someone is trying to kill Summer, Jack takes it upon himself to protect her. Summer has known Jack since she was 12 and he was 15. In college they had a fling but Jack dumped her and went on to numerous other flings. (Man Whore).
I love this series and I loved the characters. LMR writes some of the best protective heroes and some great non-wimpy heroines. I have no problem recommending this book and this series to Romance Fans.

This story is my least favorite of the series. Jack and Summer hooked up years ago, and it ended badly. I'm not a fan of second chance where the hero is a sleazy player, and unfortunately Jack was awful to Summer. Thankfully he's a changed man, but their history left a bad taste in my mouth. I think it would be pretty difficult to forgive his past behavior. I also thought the ending was rushed, too many loose ends.
Overall not a terrible, but nothing I'd recommend. Hopefully the next book in the series is better.

I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher, via Netgalley, this does not affect my opinion of this book or the content of my review.
This is book 4 in the Men of Midnight series, and book 7 overall of interconnected characters. This author has a very repeatable format that I find really enjoyable and it is comforting for me to read. Man and woman hit deep into some over the top intrigue, close knot clan of former military operatives turned private sector close ranks, hero and heroine save each other (either metaphorically or physically), evil is vanquished, true love prevails, and happily ever is achieved. I don’t think Lisa Marie Rice is glommable, because it might get a little repetitive. But if you are looking for romantic suspense without the angst, she is a sure-fire winner.
Midnight Fire adds a new twist to her format, the second chance romance, so I was eager to check it out. I have a love hate relationship with second chance romances, so I really never know how I am going to respond, but I do tend to favor it in shorter romantic suspense because often you get insta-love in that type of story to make room for the action. So it feels kind of nice for the main characters to have some history together.
And man this heroine is rocking it. Not that previous heroines in the series haven’t been smart or together, especially the last one. But Summer is in a whole different league. She runs the biggest political expose blog and is tapped into all sorts of information. And it is that information and those contacts, as much as her previous relationship with Jack, that gets her sucked into this intrigue.
On the second chance front, Summer might have pined hard-core when he first broke her heart, but she got back out there and lived her own life, dated, created a career she loved, the whole shebang. Jack, while he might not have pined after he left her, admitted what an unthinking man-child he was back then, has been sad and lonely for a lot longer than just this past tragedy, and gets cutely gushy and open with Summer almost immediately as with the 20/20 hindsight he recognizes what he missed out on. It struck enough of a second chance balance for me to enjoy it,
And for those of you, who like me are on condom watch, while there isn’t explicit contraceptive use, there also weren’t any thoughts or conversations about being willing to risk it etc. So it was, I don’t know if better is the right word or just less irritating. I can handle characters who don’t even think about it better than I can characters who consciously make what I consider a stupid decision.
The suspense though, that was a mix of ripped from the headlines and over the top espionage CIA thriller movie-esque action. Think Live Free or Die Hard. There really isn’t any mystery, we even spend some time in the evil villain’s head. The question is just how is Rice going to shake this one out. But it was engrossing seeing how it all fell apart and came together. And I always enjoy it when the heroine saves the day.
Honestly, I found Midnight Fire to be a delightful little treat for rounding out my evening. A nice way to go through a second chance romance, especially for those of us who like a little Bruce Willis-esque action in our romance. And while the hero didn’t grovel, he got nicely gooey over the heroine in short order and did apologize.

This is book 4 in the Men of Midnight series, and book 7 overall of interconnected characters. This author has a very repeatable format that I find really enjoyable and it is comforting for me to read. Man and woman hit deep into some over the top intrigue, close knot clan of former military operatives turned private sector close ranks, hero and heroine save each other (either metaphorically or physically), evil is vanquished, true love prevails, and happily ever is achieved. I don’t think Lisa Marie Rice is glommable, because it might get a little repetitive. But if you are looking for romantic suspense without the angst, she is a sure-fire winner.
Midnight Fire adds a new twist to her format, the second chance romance, so I was eager to check it out. I have a love hate relationship with second chance romances, so I really never know how I am going to respond, but I do tend to favor it in shorter romantic suspense because often you get insta-love in that type of story to make room for the action. So it feels kind of nice for the main characters to have some history together.
And man this heroine is rocking it. Not that previous heroines in the series haven’t been smart or together, especially the last one. But Summer is in a whole different league. She runs the biggest political expose blog and is tapped into all sorts of information. And it is that information and those contacts, as much as her previous relationship with Jack, that gets her sucked into this intrigue.
On the second chance front, Summer might have pined hard-core when he first broke her heart, but she got back out there and lived her own life, dated, created a career she loved, the whole shebang. Jack, while he might not have pined after he left her, admitted what an unthinking man-child he was back then, has been sad and lonely for a lot longer than just this past tragedy, and gets cutely gushy and open with Summer almost immediately as with the 20/20 hindsight he recognizes what he missed out on. It struck enough of a second chance balance for me to enjoy it,
And for those of you, who like me are on condom watch, while there isn’t explicit contraceptive use, there also weren’t any thoughts or conversations about being willing to risk it etc. So it was, I don’t know if better is the right word or just less irritating. I can handle characters who don’t even think about it better than I can characters who consciously make what I consider a stupid decision.

Siamo arrivati alla storia di Jack, il fratello di Isabel redivivo e superstite dal massacro della propria famiglia, che nella ricerca della vendetta incapperà in una vecchia fiamma fin troppo curiosa per il suo stesso bene, Summer XD I due come coppia funzionano, Summer è abbastanza intelligente da saper farsi da parte nel momento opportuno (e abbastanza veloce da intromettersi nel gran finale in maniera non auto-distruttiva XD) e Jack dopo tanta solitudine e tanto dolore è pronto ad amare una persona in maniera esclusiva e passionale, come solo gli uomini della Rice sanno fare ;D In verità l'unico ostacolo tra loro è la passata storiella adolescenziale finita male, una scusa abbastanza flebile e fin troppo abusata dalla povera Summer che non ha altre armi per difendersi XD Un pò noiosa la parte sui "cattivi", il loro piano, seppur teoricamente efficace, è di una semplicità spaventosa e non giustifica tutto il tram tram della squadra dei buoni.... comunque sono davvero curiosa di leggere il prossimo (e ultimo) libro su Nick *ç*

Hector Blake may be dead as of the last book, but the conspiracy he helped set into motion is going forward; this time it is to be a subversive scheme that will affect all of the west coast of the US. Summer Redding writes a blog which uncovers political plots, and she is hot on the trail of the conspiracy. When she recognizes childhood friend and college lover Jack at Hector’s funeral in DC, he realizes his cover is blown and her life in danger. They then come together to investigate Hector and try to pull together the threads of the plot before the next planned disaster.
This book was a bit different from LMR’s other books in the 'Men of Midnight' series. I think that was the influence of the ‘Adam Firestone’ she gave thanks to in her acknowledgment. The plotline was edgier and more suspenseful than usual. Not that there weren’t the signature LMR tells – the big, burly hero, the intelligent, ethereally beautiful woman, and the instalust – that was still there; but the storyline overall was stronger and more thrilling. Actually, the entire story took place in just a couple of days. It was only one day before the action moved on to Portland, Oregon where the rest if the gang is.
Good story, and lots of fun. Conspiracies abounded, and I enjoyed it immensely. My only real complaint is that after the long buildup, the plot specifics were discovered and the climactic scene over incredibly fast. There was a thread left open at the end suggesting who the heroine in next book might be. The writing is much stronger than the early books; but this is a really good series. I’m glad LMR picked it back up after all these years to continue it. So good to be back with ‘Midnight Man’ and the guys who originally got me hooked on LMR. Now I just wish she could find a way to continue ‘Ghost Ops’.

Mystery, romance and a plot to take over the United States government. You get it all with Midnight Fire. A real wonderful romantic-suspense page turner. My only complaint is the amount of narrative repetition.
The two main characters, Jack and Summer both made their first appearance in Midnight Secrets, Men of Midnight series, #3. That was a fantastic book and well worth your time to read it first. But this book is their story and is about Jack's quest to avenge the murder of his family and over 700 people. Or, and, his quest to win the fair Summer, protect her and get her help in his quest. Jack was presumed dead in the Washington Massacre. As a CIA agent, he had information that there were rumblings of big doings with China. Since the face of American government changed with the Washington Massacre there are a lot of people with motive and who stood to gain. Jack is out to uncover them all.
Summer has been in love with Jack since she was 12 years old. For one week as a freshman at Harvard, her dream came true. Then Jack left and broke her heart. Summer recognizes Jack as a homeless vet outside the funeral of Hector Blake, the baddie from Midnight Secrets. Jack tracks her down and saves her life. She is determined to keep her distance and her heart. Jack is determined to win that heart.

Midnight Fire es el cuarto libro de la saga Men Of Midnight y tiene como protagonistas a Jack ( hermano de Isabel, del libro anterior ) y Summer, un nuevo personaje.
Desde que lei el libro anterior y se descubrio lo que habia sucedido con el hermnao de Isabel tuve muchas ganas de leer esta historia, algo me decia que seria una lectura muy buena y lo fue.
Es cierto que la mayoria de libros de esta serie tienen muchas similitudes y que algunos diran que son repetitivos pero para mi son lecturas rapidas, ligeras y con un toque que las diferencia de otras lecturas sencillas, eso si, hay algo que no me termina de gustar del todo y es lo rapido que soluciona la autora " el gran drama ", siento que si lo desarrollara mas, las historias nos dejarian mejor sabor de boca al finalizarlas.

Plus points: I feel the mystery / conspiracy part is executed really well. I also like it when the entire team assembled at the end.
What I don't like is how the climax scene went down. It felt rushed and ended abruptly I was like ???? when it immediately got cut to the epilogue. Also,
Overall, it could have been better. I might check out the other books in the series. Does Felicity has a book?

Non so che dire, sono davvero perplessa. Ho sempre seguito sia la precedente seria che questa e, tra i normali alti e bassi, mi sono molto affezionata ai personaggi del team.
Pure questo libro è partito bene, Jack, il fratello redivivo di Isabel, e Summer parevano entrambi due figure ben delineate e credibili (ok, forse Jack risultava un po' sopra le righe, con questo insistere sul fatto che tutti lo credevano il solito golden boy ricco e viziato, mentre lui in realtà era un super agente segreto che soffriva nell'ombra pur di aiutare il suo paese... ma amen, chiudiamo gli occhi, alla fine è un'americana che scrive e loro ci sguazzano a ricoprire di bandiere a stelle e strisce i loro eroi).
Passato il primo centinaio di pagine, però, ti crolla la mascella e non si rialza più.
Non sembra neanche più la stessa persona che scrive, come se qualcun altro si fosse sostituito alla tastiera, e l'intera trama perde di credibilità.
I due, soprattutto, iniziano a darci dentro di brutto: trattandosi di un erotico poteva starci, ma le scene sono inserite a casaccio, tra un attentato e l'altro, così che i nostri sbiancano e si disperano "oh, no, quanti morti, migliaia, un'ecatombe...ecc." e poi cambia l'inquadratura, si guardano, e lui è già pronto per ricominciare a fare altro...
Non parliamo di quando Summer scopre che i suoi collaboratori hanno fatto una brutta fine (e già qui persino io, trenta pagine prima, mi ero chiesta: ma se stanno cercando di farti fuori con il sarin, non ti viene il dubbio che anche i tuoi ragazzi siano in pericolo - domande ovvie che non trovano risposte). Scena prima: lei si dispera. Scena dopo: lei si ritrova con le ragazze della serie a spiluccare olive ascolane. Mugolando, peraltro. "Vera ricetta abruzzese").
Insomma, una pessima scelta dei tempi e del dosaggio delle emozioni.
Oppure il testo è stato tagliato in modo sconsiderato in italiano.
Ne risulta un mix confuso, freddo e che nel finale continua a far alzare gli occhi al cielo.
Spero che resti l'unico episodio non riuscito, perché la precedente parte di serie meritava.

Primeiro tenho que alertar que para entender melhor os acontecimentos é aconselhável ler Midnight Secrets primeiro, senão você vai ficar perdido em meio a tantos acontecimentos.
O livro inicia com o enterro de Hector Blake, nosso vilão que queria ser o Vice Rei das Américas.
Summer, como boa repórter investigativa, está intrigada com o mistério que envolve a morte de Hector e suspeita que ele seja a chave do mistério sobre o Massacre de Washington. Então ela comparece ao enterro para tentar colher informações.
Jack, disfarçado de mendigo, também vai ao enterro para o mesmo fim, confiante de que ninguém vá reconhecê-lo. Afinal ele está usando este disfarce por 6 meses e ninguém o reconheceu.
Só que Summer o reconhece pelos olhos azuis e pela ligação que tiveram no passado.
Jack e Summer compartilham uma história antiga, pois se conheceram quando ela tinha 12 anos e ele 15 anos de idade. Summer se encanta pela família Delvaux e pelo jovem Jack. Mais tarde se reencontram na Faculdade e se tornam amantes. Jack tira a virgindade dela e em seguida a troca pela colega de quarto e várias outras garotas. Summer fica de coração partido e Jack desaparece da vida dela.

A autora cria uma trama de suspense realmente muito plausível e que nos faz pensar. Um país recebendo uma série de ataques orquestrados de tal maneira que não só a estabilidade política, mas também a economia seja afetada e isso ocasionando o abalo de toda estrutura governamental.
Primeiro o Massacre de Washington dizimando centenas de pessoas junto com toda a família do futuro candidato a presidência. Segundo o assassinato de Hugh Lownie, diretor do NCS da CIA e mentor de Jack. Terceiro fato a drenagem de 3 trilhões de dólares da economia americana da noite para o dia, causando o colapso de indústrias e iniciando uma grande recessão.
Tudo isso orquestrado por americanos não só parte do governo, mas do alto escalão das agências de inteligência junto com a China. Todos movidos pela ganância de dinheiro e poder!
Este livro me surpreendeu, pois a história de amor dos heróis ficou em segundo plano para dar ênfase à busca dos culpados pela conspiração e também na sobrevivência dos heróis.
Confesso que não é meu livro preferido, pois senti falta daquele macho alfa tão característico da autora, mas a história prende a atenção do leitor e cumpre o prometido.
Recomendo e estou ansiosa pelo próximo!

First I must warn you to better understand the events it is necessary to read Midnight Secrets first, otherwise you will be lost in the midst of so many events.
The book begins with the funeral of Hector Blake, our villain who wanted to be the Vice King of the Americas.
Summer, as good investigative reporter, is intrigued by the mystery surrounding the death of Hector and suspects that he is the key to unlocking the mystery of the Massacre of Washington. So she attends the funeral for trying to gather information.
Jack, disguised as a homeless, also goes to the funeral for the same purpose, confident that no one will recognize him. After all he is using this cover for 6 months and no one recognized him.
Only Summer recognizes Jack by his blue eyes and the connection they had in the past.
Jack and Summer share an ancient story, since they met when she was 12 years old and he's 15 years old. Summer was delighted by the Delvaux family and the young Jack. Later the two reconnect in college and become lovers. Jack takes her virginity and then going on to other women without giving explanation. Summer is heartbroken and Jack disappears from her life.
Summer is a journalist specializing in politics with the blog named Area 8 well known for its contents and respected by the veracity of the facts presented. Jack, who is considered dead by all, is afraid that Summer go blow his cover and publicize the fact on her blog.
Jack convinces her to help him in research with the promise that history will be hers to publish in the blog Area 8. And with that she becomes a target of the conspirators who now want to eliminate her.
The author creates a suspenseful plot really plausible and that makes us think. A country receiving a series of attacks orchestrated in such a way that not only political stability, but also the economy is affected and it causing the collapse of the whole governmental structure.
First the Washington Massacre decimating hundreds of people along with the whole family of the future presidential candidate. Then it's the murder of Hugh Lownie, Director of one of the agencies on CIA and Jack's mentor. Third fact that occurs is the drainage of 3 trillion dollars of the American economy overnight, causing the collapse of industries and starting a major recession.
All this orchestrated by Americans not only of the Government but also of the top intelligence agencies along with China. All driven by greed for money and power.
This book surprised me, because the love story of the heroes stayed in the background to give emphasis to the pursuit of the guilty for conspiracy and also the survival of heroes.
I confess it is not my favorite book because I missed that alpha male so characteristic of the author, but the story holds the reader's attention and fulfill promised.
Recommend and I'm looking forward to the next!

Primeiro o Massacre de Washington dizimando centenas de pessoas junto com toda a família do futuro candidato a presidência. Segundo o assassinato de Hugh Lownie, diretor do NCS da CIA e mentor de Jack. Terceiro fato a drenagem de 3 trilhões de dólares da economia americana da noite para o dia, causando o colapso de indústrias e iniciando uma grande recessão.
Tudo isso orquestrado por americanos não só parte do governo, mas do alto escalão das agências de inteligência junto com a China. Todos movidos pela ganância de dinheiro e poder!
Este livro me surpreendeu, pois a história de amor dos heróis ficou em segundo plano para dar ênfase à busca dos culpados pela conspiração e também na sobrevivência dos heróis.
Confesso que não é meu livro preferido, pois senti falta daquele macho alfa tão característico da autora, mas a história prende a atenção do leitor e cumpre o prometido.
Recomendo e estou ansiosa pelo próximo!

Hector Blake is dead, but the conspiracy continues.
First I must warn you to better understand the events it is necessary to read Midnight Secrets first, otherwise you will be lost in the midst of so many events.
The book begins with the funeral of Hector Blake, our villain who wanted to be the Vice King of the Americas.
Summer, as good investigative reporter, is intrigued by the mystery surrounding the death of Hector and suspects that he is the key to unlocking the mystery of the Massacre of Washington. So she attends the funeral for trying to gather information.
Jack, disguised as a homeless, also goes to the funeral for the same purpose, confident that no one will recognize him. After all he is using this cover for 6 months and no one recognized him.
Only Summer recognizes Jack by his blue eyes and the connection they had in the past.
Jack and Summer share an ancient story, since they met when she was 12 years old and he's 15 years old. Summer was delighted by the Delvaux family and the young Jack. Later the two reconnect in college and become lovers. Jack takes her virginity and then going on to other women without giving explanation. Summer is heartbroken and Jack disappears from her life.
Summer is a journalist specializing in politics with the blog named Area 8 well known for its contents and respected by the veracity of the facts presented. Jack, who is considered dead by all, is afraid that Summer go blow his cover and publicize the fact on her blog.
Jack convinces her to help him in research with the promise that history will be hers to publish in the blog Area 8. And with that she becomes a target of the conspirators who now want to eliminate her.
The author creates a suspenseful plot really plausible and that makes us think. A country receiving a series of attacks orchestrated in such a way that not only political stability, but also the economy is affected and it causing the collapse of the whole governmental structure.
First the Washington Massacre decimating hundreds of people along with the whole family of the future presidential candidate. Then it's the murder of Hugh Lownie, Director of one of the agencies on CIA and Jack's mentor. Third fact that occurs is the drainage of 3 trillion dollars of the American economy overnight, causing the collapse of industries and starting a major recession.
All this orchestrated by Americans not only of the Government but also of the top intelligence agencies along with China. All driven by greed for money and power.
This book surprised me, because the love story of the heroes stayed in the background to give emphasis to the pursuit of the guilty for conspiracy and also the survival of heroes.
I confess it is not my favorite book because I missed that alpha male so characteristic of the author, but the story holds the reader's attention and fulfill promised.
Recommend and I'm looking forward to the next!

(Dec) At the end of the last book, we learn golden boy Jack Delvaux is alive and hiding and trying to prove who killed his family as well as 700 others in an explosion that rocked the very foundation of American life. As the book opens, he’s spotted by Summer Redding, a girl he knew growing up – and one he deflowered and left in college 15 years ago. Summer writes a very popular political blog and is tenacious when it comes to finding out the truth about D.C. movers and shakers. Jack goes to her, tells her the truth about where he’s been and what he believes is going on, and Summer agrees to not publish anything until they have the bad guys figured out and behind bars. The investigation takes a few nasty turns, which require Summer to give up her blog and go with Jack to Portland, where his sister lives, and where they can find the help they need to ferret out the head honchos of the insidious plot to take over America.
Jack was a complete slut in college and shortly thereafter and feels awful about how he treated Summer. He kind of dwells on this point a bit too much – it’s like alright, we get it, you slept around and didn’t care about women’s feelings and now you feel bad. Summer, on the other hand, is the kind of heroine who gets on my nerves. She was 18, slept with a guy for a week, and then he blew her off, took up with her roomie and soon after other girls in her dorm, and then she never saw him again. Fine, cry, eat ice cream, and chide yourself for building dreams out of thin air. But no – Summer instead pretty much swears off guys for a long time and never feels able to trust them again, blaming it all on Jack. Sorry, honey, but you chose to sleep with him at the beginning and he never made you any promises. Sure, you were hurt, but you also expected things that were never promised. Get over it and move on! Jack, of course, has feeling for Summer the minute they reconnect and is sure she’s THE ONE. Summer has similar feelings; feelings she tries to fight as she is afraid of getting burned again. I get that, but come on, it’s been 15 years and Jack’s life has been devastated. Give him a break, give him a chance! Of course, in the end she does. And in the end they manage, with help from the Portland gang, to figure out what is going on and stop the world from blowing up seconds before it actually happens (I was kind of on the edge of my seat though – it really did get down to the wire and I wasn’t sure how they were going to manage!). I do wish they’d learned more about who was truly behind it all and how he set it all up (we got bits and pieces from the baddie’s POV which helped us understand how bad it was actually supposed to be). This was ok – not great, and I definitely liked the last one more than this one, but I am sure I’ll read the next one which features FBI hottie Nick.

As far as conspiracy theories go, Midnight Fire tackles several of them head on. It depicts the successful launch of several terrorist attacks on the United States over the course of several months. Those attacks are believed to have been launched by several traitors within the CIA. Of course, every book needs a hero and the hero in this story is Jack Delvaux and he is supposed to be dead. He is also a member of the CIA himself. Unfortunately for Jack, his family becomes a victim of one of the attacks. As he is working in the shadows to get justice, he stumbles upon an old flame, Summer Redding. Summer is a successful political blogger. In order to stop her from revealing his secret and keep her safe, Jack has to get her involved in his secret investigation.
There was a lot to like about this book. The hero and heroine are very likeable and the political musings are very relevant. The fact that Jack and Summer have a history that spans over 15 years makes it a little difficult to believe that they fall back into a rhythm so quickly. Neither of them is the same person that they were back then so I expected a little more playing hard to get. Sure, the romance has to move at a certain pace but considering the serious subject matter, I would have liked a little more realism. I know that they have to hook up at some point but it could have taken a few more days for them to get between the sheets. But when they do get between the sheets, they set the world on fire. While the plot against the U.S. was intriguing, I was equally intrigued by Summer’s backstory. She was raised by drug-addicted parents that still managed to travel around the world. How does that happen? Summer is a strong woman and I couldn’t help but hope she survived the continued threats to her life. Jack may have been fueled by vengeance but it’s easy to see that it’s his heart that makes him a great hero.
I didn’t realize it at first but Midnight Fire is part of a series. Consequently, it can be read as a stand-alone. There’s a lot more mystery and suspense to this book than I mentioned but if I did, I would spoil it for you. Just know that when the CIA and FBI are involved, it’s very difficult to determine who to trust. I was thoroughly entertained.
