A reputation to reclaim, a matchmaking mother to thwart, and a most inadvisable arrangement.
Nell Prescott brings the whiff of scandal wherever she goes. Surrounded by proper ladies and gentlemen ready to be matched, she has a different object at the Countess of Dalmeer’s grand house to prove herself a model of propriety worthy of a better reputation.
When an unwanted admirer proves difficult to discourage, however, she finds herself in need of an ally.
Archibald Thorne, Earl of Dalmeer, intends to thwart his mother’s officious matchmaking attempts through the most aggravating methods at his disposal. Singling out the one woman she is conspicuously ignoring is low-hanging fruit.
A mutual arrangement—his protection for her company—seems the perfect solution. If only it doesn’t prove their downfall.
I loved this book so much! It’s not exactly fake dating more like fake…interest? But I’m so here for it! There is also a past scandal involved. I loved Archie and Nell! I loved watching them help each other out of uncomfortable situations with other suitors. The chemistry between Archie and Nell is great! I also enjoyed the party games and Christmas decorating! Overall a great read for the holiday season! I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The first in the Belles of Christmas: House Party, Holly and Folly, was such a fun and romantic story. It was a great start to the series and I am so excited to continue it. I felt for Nell! She had a rough experience and was firmly decided on being practical. She was not looking for love, just a secure and nonscandalous party. Nell was thoughtful with a playful streak, so after difficulties with an unwanted admirer she takes up Archie’s offer. Archie was also really sweet. He was also thoughtful and sincerely cared about his responsibility as earl. Archie was determined to make his own choices for his future, not be pushed into anything by his mother. He had the same perspective as Nell and their plan seemed the perfect solution. Archie and Nell were so fun together! I loved how he brought out her humor and how he was able to be himself around her. It was sweet to see them connect and all the Christmas activities that they did! It took them a bit, but I loved seeing their slowburn! A house party is such a fun setting and I loved how it also introduced other characters for the series. It was sweet to see how Wesley looked out for Nell and Millie was such a good friend to her! This is a Christmas historical romance with only kisses and some innuendo. I received an ARC.
Summary: Nell Prescott arrives at the Countess of Dalmeer’s house determined to restore her reputation. She strikes an arrangement with her son, Archibald, the Earl of Dalmeer that will help in her mission and hopefully ease his mother’s matchmaking attempts. As they get closer, they start to risk their own scandal.
Thoughts: Excuse me while I SWOOOOOON. This book was so lovely. One scene gave me actual butterflies. The stolen glances were written in such beautiful detail.
The writing was wonderfully immersive. I felt like I was right there at the house party, joining in on all the activities. It was such an entertaining escape, and I loved the quick, witty banter between the characters.
Just a wonderful Christmas novella. I love when an author can bring out such a wide range of emotions in so few pages… that takes real talent. I can’t wait to continue the series.
Thank you to the author and publisher for providing an advanced copy. My feedback is given voluntarily and honestly.
A Regency romance set at a house party? Sign me up! Who doesn't love a good house party with parlor games, outings, forced proximity, and plenty of opportunities for romance? Add in a little matchmaking meddling and a fake courtship, and you have a recipe for a delightful read!
Nell and Archie each have their own reasons for pretending to be interested in one another. Nell is trying to escape some unwanted attention following a scandal and hopes to repair her tarnished reputation, while Archie wants his mother to stop presenting him with potential brides. Their arrangement seems like the perfect solution for both of them. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to tell where the pretending ends and their true feelings begin!
I really felt for Nell. She wanted to be home, yet she knew she needed to stay and work toward restoring her reputation. Archie is such a fun guy and I loved every scene with him and Nell. Their chemistry was wonderful, and their banter was TOP TIER! I loved the dual POV, letting me see their thoughts and feelings as their arrangement became a little more complicated than either had planned.
I loved all the descriptions of the activities and outings. If you're looking for a charming Regency romance filled with witty banter, wonderful chemistry, a fake courtship, and a festive atmosphere, add this one to your TBR!
I received a digital copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Absolutely loved it! The teasing banter in this one is top notch and man this one made me not only laugh but ache and cry for Nell! I think I needed a good cry! Life can be hard sometimes and escaping into a good book like this one can be the perfect respite.
Nell has a reputation or a lack thereof depending on how you look at it,
“To those who loved her, Elinor Prescott was known as Nell. To the rest of the world…she was more likely to be referred to as that shocking Prescott girl.”
After a year of avoiding society she decides to go to a house party at Bellthorne Hall with her brother and her best friend. Unfortunately for her rumors have not died down entirely and after meeting Archie they decide to enter into a mutually beneficial farce to act as a “shield” of sorts
“Mother, there are fifty people present at Bellthorne, but I assure you, the only one trying to trap me into marriage is you.”
I devoured this one finishing late into the night with no regrets! Perfect length for Christmas and I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the books in this series so I can follow along with all the happenings at the Belles of Christmas House Party!
I received an advance copy of this book from the author all thoughts are my own
This story completely captivated me. Holly and Folly is beautiful and compelling. Martha Keyes is a brilliant writer. And she’s mastered the exquisite art of eyebrow communication as well.
Lady Dalmeer is hosting a three week Christmas house party with the main purpose of matchmaking, particularly for her son, Lord Dalmeer. He has no intention of being pushed into marriage or into doing anything his mother wants him to do. Only a guilty conscience and his mother’s tears could convince him to attend the house party. Nell is coming out of a year of hiding after being part of an enormous scandal, and Lady Dalmeer isn’t going to make this easy.
A delightful meet-cute leads to the most charming and hilarious fake courtship arrangement. This book was so much fun to read, I could not put it down. Dalmeer is kind, attentive, and mischievous in playing out the fake courtship. Nell is simply hoping to not make her social standing worse after it is all over. They are adorable together as they participate in all the traditional Christmas house party events.
I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read the rest of the Belles of Christmas House Party multi-author series. Each book will be released this week. (Read faster, Kathy!)
Thank you, Martha, for an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I blew through this one fast! This is the first in the series and it set the prescedence to be a fun and fabulous series. I thought the MMC was witty and smooth. The couple was well matched. The ending is fit for a Christmas read without any cheesiness! For me the book started out with a bang and I was hooked. Fav line "It is me you have been torturing." Definitely some sweet romantic moments and moments of care with the FMC brother and her friend, her supporters. I always love a regency story set in a house party. This author never fails to create great characters, scenes, plot and dialogue. I love some good dialogue. Low angst and stress, no language, closed door, kisses only.
Who here is ready for Christmas books??? *Raises Hand Excitedly* I am so ready! In fact I've already read several before this one, I think possibly even back in September is when I started. I'm really excited for everyone to read this Belles of Christmas series by 5 different authors! They are all fabulous. Yes, I've read them all and am reading the last one right now. Each book releases back to back so no long amount of time waiting for them.
The Countess of Dalmeer is hosting her grand house party and she has handpicked who will be attending. Of course she's playing the matchmaker to them all and hoping there are many betrothals by the end of the party. Especially her very own son's betrothal. She's very anxious for him to wed. He on the other hand is being very standoffish. Hiding away. Avoiding his mother at all costs.
Enter Elinor, aka Nell, Prescott! She's just glad to be with her brother but not sure she wants to be at the party. Especially when her arrival is not fully expected. She'll just hide away and stay in the background during all of the parlour games, outings, etc. Until she has to try to evade a rather odious man. And then we have the Earl of Dalmeer to the rescue!!! *Happy Sigh*
Nell and Archibald had me giggling and swooning so much throughout this book! I adored them! They are such fun characters. The wit and banter passing back and forth between them, and let's not forget the chemistry!!! Hello sparks!!! I loved this story about being seen for who you truly are and not for titles and past mistakes or follies. It was a perfect way to start off the house party! I loved the little glimpses of other guests at the house party and making guesses of how their story will be woven in and shown from their own perspectives! And I'm here to tell you that I loved reading the other books and seeing this house party from so many different points of view! Definitely pick these up! Now excuse me while I go and read the last book! ;-)
Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses and nothing further.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Welcome to the Belles of Christmas House Party - installment 1: Holly and Folly
Nell really doesn't want to be at this house party, she'd far rather be at home hiding from society but she is here with her brother and is determined to behave as a model of propriety. However she soon realises her reputation has gone before her and she is put in a hard place of not always being accepted and feeling safe. Archie, Earl of Dalmeer, is determined not to submit to his mothers matchmaking plans and when he works out which lady she least likes, well it suits him to hang out with her just to thwart his mother. When Nell and Archie discover that by spending time together they can both achieve their goals they come to an agreement to do so with no commitment. But time spent together helps them to see each other beyond the surface and enjoy a few laughs together and wonder whether there might be more.
This is a 'read in one sitting' book, it was so good. Stolen glances, small touches and humour made for a sweet romance that was very satisfying to read. I felt like I was part of the house party and the descriptions were so good - I can just see the faces on all the busts lining the gallery. This book has set the scene beautifully for the rest of the series and I'm really intrigued to know which other couples will be part of the series.
House party stories, especially Christmas-themed ones, often get tedious, with all the games and decorations. This one avoids that problem very well. It was cute and believable, with good dialogue and little angst. Both of the main characters were easy to like and root for. And Martha Keyes is a very good writer. This was sweet and satisfying. It will be in the running for my favorite Christmas novel or novella of the season, but there is already serious competition out there. We'll see.
I finished this awhile ago and I’m still smiling. I just love the way Martha Keyes writes. I’m always drawn into the story right away. I never want to put it down. This one takes place at a house party. One of my favorite settings!
Nell was a girl tainted by scandal. She was trying desperately to restore her reputation. When she gets unwanted attention at the house party she needs help to keep the man away.
Archie is an Earl who’s disillusioned with marriage. He has no desire to be married, but his mother is a determined matchmaker. She’s giving this house party to find him a wife.
To get his mother off his back he proposes a fake courtship to Nell. That way it will help both of them. What could go wrong? Right?
You will love this story. It’s so engaging and fun!
This book was the best way to start off my Christmas reading this year. I absolutely loved this delightful and charming Regency romance. There were seriously so many things I loved and enjoyed about this book while reading. For one thing, I really loved the unique character arc of Nell. I feel like we get the reformed rogue and we see women who get taken advantage of, but in this one, Nell owned her own choices and the consequences and I found it rather unique and refreshing. I really saw her growth, but also liked how she knew who she was. It completely fit her personality and that leads me into how much I loved Archie as the perfect counterpart for her. Archie was SUPER charming. The way he and Nell began their relationship and how it unfolded really made me happy. I loved how Archie saw Nell, like really saw her, and the way he was present and cared for her well-being. Their romance was swoony in all its moments and cute and one I will remember. This story has dual POV which is fabulous. It really gave me that added insight into both characters' heads and hearts. The house part elements were also super fun and this definitely had me wanting to pick up the next book in the series. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I recommend this story!
4.75 stars: This fun Regency Christmas house party story immediately drew me in. Nell faking an injury on Archie's recommendation with berry "blood" was such a vivid image! I was rooting for them the whole time. I'm obsessed with this part: "'Let me offer you the protection of my name,' he begged. Protection. A name. She wanted them both. But they were so much less than craved" (p. 152). The notes were also so sweet, like when he wrote "To love you without reservation. Just as you are" (p. 202). So good!
Thank you to the author for the ARC; all opinions are my own.
This first book in the Belles of Christmas: House Party series is a delight! I loved Nell and Archie’s story! Nell had a past and she wasn’t sure if she could ever overcome it or marry for that matter. Archie had no intention of marrying and if he did marry, it would be out of duty. When these two find themselves together, fun and laughter abound. Their secret plan to protect themselves from unwanted attention could possibly turn into much more than what they had planned. I loved the entire story, every single word. I hated when I had to put to down to actually attend to my actual life. Hello? There is an awesome book I need to read instead! Perfect to get you into the holiday season, Holly & Folly is one Christmas regency you don’t want to miss! I look forward to reading the other books in the series soon! I received a complimentary copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Book Review! Title: Holly and Folly Author: Martha Keyes 📚 It has been far too long since I’ve read one of Martha’s historical novels, and I’m so happy this one brought me back to her books. It was such a delight! 📚 I love the idea of a protagonist who has “fallen from grace,” as it were, and seeing the redemption (though I feel this is too strong a word) is absolutely perfect. Both Nell and Archie are such fun characters and watching them fall in love (especially Archie) was delicious. The antics the two of them got up to were hilarious. I really loved how Archie would needle his mother in just the right way, how he knew exactly how to push her buttons, but not actually being hurtful or overbearing. Nell’s relationship with her brother was so sweet, and I love her friend, Millie. This book was the perfect beginning of the rest of the series and I’m very much looking forward to the rest of this house party. 📚 Some of my favorite things in this book: -the kissing scenes — swoon! -The year’s hope and prediction notes — Major swoon! -Collecting greenery for decor and the holly berries -Scene in the conservatory -All the scenes with the vicar — hilarious! . .. … .. . #MarthaKeyes #BellesOfChristmasHouseParty #regencyromance #NewRelease #ChristmasBookSeason Christmas Books | Martha Keyes | Clean Romance | Regency Romance | Book Lovers | Christmas Reading | Books
A wonderful story to start out this new multi-author series. Each story takes place during a three week Christmas House Party where the hostess is intent on being a matchmaker. It's always amazing how these author keep all the character details of the house party when writing their individual story.
There's humor as well as some sadness due to the main female character, Nell Prescott having a scandal in her past that makes some of the people around her treat her differently. All she wants to do during her stay is to improve her reputation. I cannot say I liked how the hostess, the Countess of Dalmeer treated her. But that makes the way her son Archibald Thorne, Earl of Dalmeer, treats Nell all the more satisfying.
Archie wants to thwart his mother's matchmaking plans for him to pick a bride The real reason she planned the party was to get her son married. So he makes a plan with Nell, he will help her discourage an unwanted admirer by pretending they are interested in one another. He knows that Nell is not one of the women she has chosen for him to get to know. Their plan is going well but how will it end if the two of them begin to have real feelings for one another?
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my unbiased honest review.
If you love regency romance, especially around the holidays and at a house party, this story is for you!
Nell and Archie were so sweet and fun together! I loved their inside running jokes and how much they truly cared for each other, always wanting what was best for each other.
It was so nice to watch Nell learn that she is not defined by her past and to accept love, even when she’s felt like she doesn’t deserve it.
I also loved watching Archie and his mom and how we got to learn more about why Archie feels the way he does regarding marriage. We also get to learn more about what really happened between his parents that caused those beliefs in him.
The house party is such a fun idea and I’m so excited to read the other books and see how the stories overlap and interconnect!
Thank you so much to Martha for including me on her ARC team! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Bells of Christmas – House Party. I have been so excited to read this series from the minute they were revealed. The covers themselves are spectacular and the story within is fun, flirty, witty, and charming. Elinor (Nell) had a scandal that was making her life miserable. One unfortunate mistake had the whole town whispering and turning their back on her. When her parents insisted she was invited to a house party with her brother she was very surprised. But not as surprised as the hostess of the party. Archie was really tired of his mother trying to match make a marriage for him. This ridiculous house party she planned is over the top. I told her I would not come, but my conscience got the better of me and here I am. As I am walking through the unused wing of the house and happen upon. a young woman obviously lost, I am intrigued from the very beginning. A delightful story that all can enjoy. It is a clean Regency romance that is heartwarming and will keep a smile on your face. I received a complimentary copy of this. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is the 1st book in the multi author series Belles of Christmas House Party. It's a kisses only Regency romance, and I feel this series can be read in any order. The events of each book are happening simultaneously. While this was the first hook released, it was the 4th book in the series that I read and that hasn't made any difference in the stories.
I liked Archie and Nell's push and pull relationship in this book. I am also a little glad I'd read other books first where some of the activities were more prominent parts of the story. It helped me pick up on little details here.
"I love you without reservation. Precisely as you are. And I shan't rest until you see yourself the way I do."
Charming, witty, and absolutely delightful! Well written witty/flirty banter is my absolute favorite and the banter in this book is next level! I found myself smiling and laughing throughout the entire book.
This is the perfect first book for a multi-author series. It set the stage beautifully for the entire series and gave intriguing glimpses into many of the other books main characters.
House parties, smitten MMCs and a lady who believes they aren’t good enough for him are a few of my favorite things. I thought Archie and Nell were very cute and I appreciated that their relationship evolved out of a genuine friendship although sometimes their chemistry felt more friendly than romantic because Nell was so deep in her denial. I'm also not completely sure that the whole "fake courting" situation made any sense or really added anything to the story except an excuse for miscommunication and misinterpretation. I am excited to continue the series though.
I hate to say it (cause I typically love Martha Keyes), but I didn’t care for this book. There’s nothing remarkable about it, not the characters and not the plot. It’s just… a book, and one that stretches longer than its page count. As a whole I found it slow and boring, and then the third act breakup annoying.
It’s not bad and the writing is smooth, I just didn’t get anything out of it.
Content: There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is no real message of faith or God.
If I could rate this book higher I would. This book is all the stars. I loved it! Archie is one of those MMC's that is remembered. He is irreverent in the best way. I love the humor, the kindness and the interest he shows. Nell is the frame equivalent. She finds humor in things. She is kind and good and wants the best for everyone. She doesn't really feel she deserves it in return.
I can hardly wait to read what the next couple at the house party does. A fantastic start to this series.
Quick, easy read. Started slow but picked up mid book! Some good romantic moments. Some things were unrealistic for the time period or just in reality - the MMC & FMC staying in rooms on a hallway alone right next to each other - the FMC falling asleep in church services - but still was a cute easy read! Loved the Christmas regency theme.
This is a fun read. I enjoyed Nell learning that she is worthy of love and Archie discovering that love maybe wasn't so bad, after all. This is a clean read and the editing is good. I received an ARC from the author. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so and the opinions stated are my own.
Things I loved: The arrangement between the two. the inside jokes and "The Headache" the way Lord Dalmeer takes care of Nell. This is a wonderful story set at Christmas time. There are no swears or alcohol and level 1 kisses only. Dual POV.
Holly & Folly was perfectly adorable. It is a clean romance that is enjoyable to read and hard to put down. Although the story is set over Christmas time, it struck the perfect balance that allows the book to be enjoyed anytime of the year.
I always greatly enjoy Martha's writing and this story is no exception. I love her wit and humor that enhance and deepen the more solemn moments and realization of love. I will not be a spoiler but I can ensure you that you will enjoy this read.
