Jan Falconer writes stories and creates gentle tools that help children feel confident, connected, and at home in the world.

She is the creator of the Sukie – Queen of Cats series, inspired by her real tortoiseshell cat, Sukie, and her life between Orkney and mainland Scotland. Sukie’s adventures explore belonging, choice, and the quiet ways children make sense of the world around them.

Alongside her storytelling, Jan created Jan Time – The Bedtime Reading Ritual — a simple way for families to slow down, share a story, and reconnect at the end of the day. It grew from real moments with her own family, and a belief that small, consistent rituals can make a lasting difference.

Jan’s work is shaped by her love of animals, her experience as a judge for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition, and the joy of reading with her grandchildren, Evie and Luka.
She believes that before children learn to read, they learn how reading feels — and that feeling can stay with them for life.
