A practice-oriented course in Christianity's unique meditation tradition, contemplative prayer, presented by James Finley, author, teacher, and former student of Thomas Merton. Includes a complete guided session on the practice of Christian meditation.
This is a must read for anyone who wants to be more spiritual and loving, particularly learn to love themselves more. There are no fancy tricks or methodologies here, not really. It's about setting aside the time and doing it-consistently-without expectation or a real agenda.
The greatest quote in the book-and it's a big one to come to terms with-is that God loves satan as much as He loves Jesus. This is to reassure each of us that God loves us just as much, just as we are. This also takes me down the road of parallels with capital punishment, but that would probably be more thinking than meditation., yet it still makes a humongous point that can't be ignored. God LOVES everyone, no matter how good or bad, and recognizing this and just letting God look at us daily can make a huge difference in all our lives
Nothing wrong with it and I'm probably a prime candidate for the message, but I'd rather be productive than sit in silence with my thought to listen to someone speak in such soft tones that I speed up with the reading. No judgement on you, but just not for me
This was a helpful audible guide to Christian Meditation as Finley interprets it. He incorporates many useful practical tips about background, posture, timers etc. Having a guided meditation during the book is helpful as we can do too much reading about the topic when we really need to experience it. On the downside, the recorded reading is a little hypnotic in style at some points (not just during the guided meditation) and gives the listening experience a bit of a flat feel. This could be quite hazardous when driving a vehicle at the same time. A useful guide to compare with some other teachers like Thomas Keating or John Main.
If you want to understand contemplative Christian practices/life James Finley is the man. He has a beautiful soul and he brings a level of Christ’s love to everything that I’ve never experienced before.
Wonderful. Finley has a gift of speaking in such a way that one can gently be led into meditation. His words are resonant with truth and depth of being, of slowly but surely turning towards the One who is always present and waiting for us to return our minds to That presence.
