Irreparable Deeds

Rate this book
Empty bottles of liquor litter the floor. Somewhere a little girl is crying. Laura Hallow wakes up covered in sweat, a scream clenched in her throat, half expecting to see her father plummeting to his death, or the glint of malevolence in her mother’s eyes. Years of heavy drinking and a blur of too many nights in strange places have done nothing to dampen the brutal memories of Laura’s past. The only constant has been the fear and disappointment in the eyes of her 11-year-old daughter, Danlyn. Rome, Georgia is the birthplace of Laura’s nightmares, where shadows of the past still stir. She escaped once, only a shell of a young woman, and now, pregnant and in the grips of withdrawal, she and Danlyn must return to a place where horrible possibilities await and deadly secrets hide in plain sight. When Laura accidentally stumbles upon the mysterious details behind her father’s death, she and Danlyn are thrown into a treacherous world where truths will bring their relationship to the edge of disaster and horrifying realizations will leave Laura questioning everything she thought she knew about her family. The skeletons in the closet have come out to play, uninhibited and claws drawn. Laura will soon learn that some truths are worse than death.

***** 5 Cranky Stars *****

I wasn’t very old when I realized family could be the absolute worst. In fact, some of the most evil things that happen to people we know are at the hands of ole “Uncle Jeb” or “Cousin so-and-so”. Tupac talks about his mom being crack fiend even though he saw her struggle. Sure, she made sure they had food on the table, but without the vices what kind of mother would she have been? Spoilers alert: a better one.

We talk around family “matters” because everyone has some weird blood relative story in their family tree closet, and even scarier, many have skeletons piling up in there made of nightmares ready to come out and finish you all off.

Irreparable Deeds is the latter one. It’s where we get to dance around with the skeletons, only, we like it because it’s from our safe reader distance. We can freely open the door of things like this in literature; because it’s not gonna get us.

We cheer Laura on as she faces her demons, and we hate when she hates. Its’s such an innocent thing, to hate, from the comfort of our rocking chair or wherever it is that you read, but I’ve supported her hatred this whole book long. It’s kinda sick if you think about it. (marks down self help list of books)

I like books off the beaten path.

If you do too, get off your path for a bit and pick this one up.
You will not be disappointed.
Final note: Sloane's subtle build of tension keeps me on the edge of my seat. The characters and prose set a mood that is on par with Stephen King's classics."

I have very mixed feelings about this book which I award 2 1/2 stars.

It is, in the main, well written with plenty of twists and turns, secrets and lies. But frankly, parts of it push the bounds of believability.

Laura is the product of a cold unfeeling mother and an alcoholic father. Still in her teens she is co-opted into keeping a family secret that haunts her. Following in her father's footsteps she too becomes an alcoholic.

When Laura becomes pregnant her partner throws her and her 11 year old, Danlyn, out, giving her enough money for an abortion. Instead Laura heads home to her mother, determined to become sober and build a new life.

Really? After all she suffered at the hands of her mother, that's where she runs to? But then I guess, any port in a storm and sometimes you have to go back before you can move forward.

To her surprise, her mother has a boyfriend, and a debilitating illness. Vivian insists that Laura knows Frank, but she has no memory of him, and he makes her feel uneasy. Visiting old school friends, Laura learns that her father's death was ruled suicide, and the circumstances of his death were totally different to what she had always believed. Laura is determined to get to the truth.

There are parts of this book that are totally unbelievable. She leaves Danlyn with Vivian and Frank. WHY? Knowing what she knows, and feeling what she feels, why would she do this?

Parts of Ireparable Deeds dragged, parts were wonderful, and parts made absolutely no sense at all. It dragged on a couple of chapters too long, making it evident that there will be a sequel. Sorry, but I won't be rushing to read it.

Everyone has some strange relative in their family, a skeleton they wish to hide. Irreparable Deeds is the debut novel by Sloane Kady, a psychological dark thriller that will cover a wide range of emotions, that will have the reader unsettled and disturbed, but gripped by the twists and turns that were so unpredictable. It is a story about secrets and lies, realization and love and forgiveness.

Laura Hallow returns to her childhood home with her 11 year old daughter Danlyn, to fight her addiction to alcohol. She has used alcohol to forget about the childhood she never had because her mother, Vivian, was never there for her and her father was an alcoholic. Now she is pregnant, has hit rock bottom and decides to go home and face the music, and make a life for herself and her daughter.

But what she discovers…the truth about her family is a nightmare! So much has been hidden for so many years.

And the author is able to bring this creepiness and horror to life.

This was a very heart-wrenching novel, a dark thriller, that wants to show that there can be light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to want it bad enough!

I have a love/hate relationship with this book.
The first chapters started off strong and promising and I was hooked.
A child being raised in what appears to be a highly dysfunctional family. Child grows up (named Laura) becomes an alcoholic (like her deceased father) with a young daughter and another on the way. Everything seems hopeless so what does Laura decide to do? She decides to bring her daughter back to the place where all her demons lie...back to her Mother and the farm house she grew up in.
This is where it all goes downhill for me. So much doesn't make sense. For example-why bring your child to the one place that haunts you to a woman/mother who hates you.
Then I started losing my connection with Laura. When she first arrived she is cowed by her mother back to feeling like a young child where she bows her head and says things like 'Yes Ma'am' as her Mother bullies and berates her in front of her child. In the next scene, she's all Jesse James- yelling and throwing out the F bomb to get her point across. The inconsistency in her personality was jarring to say the least and I struggled to like her. I skimmed a lot of chapters that seemed unnecessary or just trying too hard, then as I got closer to the end my love for the book came back, even ending with a nice teaser that leaves the door open for a sequel.
This is Sloane Kady's debut novel so hats off to her on a strong start. While this wasn't my favorite read in months, there is a lot of promise here.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

IRREPARABLE DEEDS, by Sloane Kady is a tough book for me to classify. While I first thought "dark thriller", there is a huge element of horror--especially psychological--strong emotions, death, along with twists and turns that I never saw coming.

". . . not all scary stories needed ghosts. Sometimes living, breathing monsters are far more terrifying . . . "

We start with Laura Hallow--a suddenly recovering alcoholic--moving with her daughter, Danlyn, back to her old family home. A home which her mother made nightmarish every moment of her life. You may question "why", but from the onset, you see that Laura has no other options available to her. What began as a mystery to me, ending up becoming so much more than that!

The writing was excellent, and the author pulls you into Laura's mind immediately. The changes she goes through as time goes on seem quite natural with the progression, and put me through an emotional ringer. I was so entranced in this horror of a home, that I missed several key twists--always a great sign, in my opinion.

Highly recommended.

Oh my god. Having just finished the book, I'm absolutely floored right now. Buying this book, I expected an okay first novel but I have been proved wrong. Irreparable Deeds is an INCREDIBLE story that I would recommend to any lover of thrillers. First of all, the characters are amazingly written. Each and everyone provided what the story needed to stay afloat. The antagonists were so well written and mysterious. They sent shivers down my spine and were different than other villains in a good way. They alone were worth the four dollars I spent on this. But, as I was introduced to the main character, Laura, and her daughter, they stirred so many emotions in me and made me care, which is what every good novel needs. But, the best part about this book were the plot twists. Each and every one of these twists and turns were so unpredictable and surprising. They were written at the perfect time and really sent the story moving along. Sloane Kady wrote a great novel that I didn't want to put down at all and I can't wait for her next book.

Apparently this is the time of the year where I read books that have huge ratings and I'm disappointed by them.

Could someone explain to me how a thriller/mystery or whatever this is have a ton of amazing ratings and is this bad, boring, plot full of holes and has a ton of characters that I don't care about them and have almost no role in the story? Yeah, I'm a big fan of stories like this, in this genre, but this was BAD.

The plot is a mess and for me it had no logic. And the mystery part is worse. How the things sorted out and which was the true gave me a headache big as China. Nothing made sense. The characters are shaped so poorly. You find in the story blocks and blocks of narrative and then dialogue, dialogue. I get it it's a story and every author has a style, but could mix these - dialogue, narration and description - together and not put them separately?

I've no idea about the charachers because there are so many and I can't picture them individually. The plot as I said, for me, is a mess without logic. The ending was bad and when I reached it I was already long gone and bored to death. The writing style is bad, boring, meh, you name it. AND I CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW A MESS LIKE THIS HAS SUCH RATINGS. HOW? Am I stupid and blind? I ask for too much?

IT'S MUCH if I want a good mystery/thriller, written well, with ok characters, with enough description so I can understand what's going on and how stuff and people look? I ask too much if I hope for action and suspense dosed well? I ask too much hoping for a plot that makes sense?

This book is and was a waste of time! And I finished it because I hoped that is going to get better and it got worse. If I had dumped it from 10% or 20% I would have saved some time for me. And some nerves. DON'T TRY THIS ONE! PLEASE! Try somewhere and don't waste your time. I'm still trying to figure out how others see this as AMAZING, cause for me was sh...

Thanks to netgalley and publisher for this, but NO. SORRY NOT.

This book covered all the gambits of family relationships. Secrets, Lies, Betrayal, Alcoholism, and Forgiveness. As Laura Hallow returns to her childhood home with her 11 year old daughter Danlyn, as a last resort, to fight her addiction to alcohol. She has used alcohol to block out the childhood she never had because her mother was emotionally unavailable and her father was an alcoholic. Now she is pregnant and no where to go. Can she face those demons and make a life for herself and her daughter. I could not put this down and cannot wait for this author's next book.

This novel takes the reader into the ugly side of families, particularly into the rotted heart of a mother whose poisonous soul has left her daughter a wreck. When we meet Laura, she is a drunkard using her daughter and pregnancy to keep her current man. She isn't the most loving, nurturing mother either- and it isn't long before she realizes in order to get clean she will have to return to her home in Georgia where her wicked mother Vivian resides. Seeing the terror she has created in her own daughter ( 11 year old Danlyn) too closely mirrors the evil of her own mother . Returning to her famiy home is going to set off events that will uncover secrets about her father's death and even darker skeletons will rise. Danlyn is shocked to find herself living in a home of wealth compared to the places she has lived all through the years, and even more confused that she has a grandmother she never met. It is one of the most uncomfortable relationships I have read, the time she spends with her grandmother and yet never quite relaxes into a bond. There is nothing more chilling than people like Vivian, who do exist in reality and are a special sort of masked monster.
The novel has so many twists and lies and strange truths that I never could have predicted. It keep me engaged and confused, a healthy recipe for an errie story. This family is a psychological train wreck. It's interesting how controlling people create an atmosphere of terror, the sort of people who make you alter your behavior as you try to keep the peace. Vivian is such a person, possibly a sociopath! Disturbingly good!

This is an Incredible story I just loved it :)
Laura is a mother with alcohol problems she also has a daughter who mostly raises herself.
She is at the end of the road and has to return to her childhood home in Rome,Georgia because she is pregnant.
She dreads going back to see her mother Vivian who has always been wicked to her and no time at all for her but she has no choice. Her Father was an alcoholic but had died but nothing is what is seems. You are drawn into the story with all its twists and turns and have to keep turning them pages to see what happens next.

Although Laura only wants to forget her terrible childhood she returns with her 11-year-old daughter Danlyn to her mother when she's pregnant and she has nowhere else to go. She hopes her mother's strictness and coldheartedness would help her to stop drinking. But what she finds is worse than everything she could imagine.
Slowly comes to light what has been hidden for years. The truth about her family is a nightmare.

Insane relationships and broken souls wherever you look. And Sloane Kady is able to bring this incredible horror to life.

A creepy book you need strong nerves to read.

This a a very strong first novel written by an author who has all the right tools in her kit; insight to human nature, crisp narration, and dialogue that is sharp and particular to the person speaking. The characters are well defined, the plot compelling, and the action and pacing are first rate. I think that even if it were her fifth book, it still stands as an excellent read. It's a mother vs. daughter story, with the mother being a sociopath and the daughter trying to recover form her tormented childhood while bearing the guilt of her failure with her own child. This pulled me in, and I found myself internally confronting Vivian several times. That's not schizophrenia, that's just what a compelling book does to me.

My only complaint, and it's a small one, is the use of religion to further vilify the mother. It's a common enough trope, one that Stephen King put to good use in Carrie, for example, but it seemed superfluous in this instance. The mother, Vivian, doesn't really exhibit any religious tendencies outside of reading the bible, and forcing her grand daughter, Danlyn to read it silently. It's not present in her thought life, she doesn't use it to justify her actions, by misquoting or taking verses out of context, for example. It's just kind of... there.

That being said, it does give the book a nice dose of irony, in that Vivian doesn't want Laura and Danlyn to be with Jackie and Steve, Laura's old friends from high school. She thinks they're vile, yet it's they that show our protagonist true Christian agape/sacrificial love, by taking her in and bearing her sorrows.

Even so, this doesn't affect the power of this book, and the climax is worth the read. It does not disappoint. I loved the resolution, and the epilogue teases us into hoping for a series or at least a sequel.

Keep an eye out for more from Sloane, she's on the rise.

Sloane Kady is the real deal! Her story took me into the dark world of Laura Hallow and twisted me around and kept me guessing, right until the end. All of the characters were top notch and I felt like I really knew them all, but I LOVED Vivian. That kind of evil is extremely compelling and had me begging for more while wanting her to pay dearly. I thoroughly enjoyed reading her book from cover to cover, heartily recommend that you read it, and cannot wait to see what she comes up with next.

Devastatingly, hauntingly beautiful.

Secrets are heavy and when you bury them you often bury yourself.

Irreparable Deeds is a story about many things; secrets and lies - betrayal and addiction - love and forgiveness.

Some people think that hitting rock bottom means there is nowhere left to fall and the only way is back up. That doesn't mean the climb is any easier than the fall.

The author shed light on a dark part of life that everyone wants to gossip about but no one wants the details. This was a very sad but very beautiful story. A story that gives hope to life. That even when you are beat down physically, emotionally and mentally you can overcome and conquer.

This book delivers a message that reaches out and holds you; always keep fighting.

I've got to admit it, I usually don't read that many female writers. Not on purpose or anything, but I guess not too many write the kinds of books I like to read. One of my Facebook buddies read this book and wrote a review on there. I decided to give it a go.
Right away, I found it refreshing that this writer stuck to the storyline. She didn't add romantic stuff, which was cool because it wasn't needed. The plot and characters were enough. But wow. She's rad as hell, I've gotta say.
The villains in this book were amazing. It's rare that I hate right along with the characters, but I felt so much of this book. The main character Laura was so strong, and watching her grow over time was part of what made this book so damn good. The author was able to pull me in. What was most amazing was the plot. So many twists and turns that you never see coming. I stayed up all night reading the thing, that's how much it pulled me in. It was a really good book. Can't go wrong.
I see that other people have said it, so did my friend, but I'm shocked this was her first novel. That's how amazing her writing is. I think there might be a sequel, if the last chapter was any indication. If there is one, I'll be buying it.

I received this book through NetGalley.
I'm a little conflicted after reading this book and wanted to give it 2 1/2 stars, but chose 3 to "round up".
The grip of the unknown pulled me through to the end, but there were some real flaws in both the writing and the plot/storyline.
If your husband knew how much of a monster you are, would he really have sex with you again and produce another child? There are a few other examples, but I don't like having spoilers in my reviews, so I won't list them out.
The dialogue between characters didn't flow too well in places, and you could tell this was the work of a debut author.
Saying all this should not deflect from the fact that the above points didn't stop me from enjoying the book overall.
I would read more from this author, and do look forward to her next book, although I'm not sure I could take a sequel, which is the impression I got from the way this one ended. If anything I'd like to read something fresh and new from her.

I read Sloane Kady's work, Irreparable Deeds, with interest. The description of the novel was compelling. But the novel was above my expectations. It was assured, certainly not of a newer writer, and was deftly handled in terms of person. The novel switched elegantly between the protagonist's first person narration to the next character's first person narration, making it possible to form an in-depth understanding of even reprehensible characters. The protagonist had great resonance, as did the other characters, but what set this novel apart was that it never let the up-and-down movement of character development impede the forward thrust of exciting narrative. All in all, a tremendous dark work by an author I am excited to read more from. Absolutely five stars.

I may be a little late to the party, but I have to join in the praise heaped upon Sloane Kady's Irreparable Deeds. It is indeed a fine story of psychological suspense, presented with far more assurance than I would normally expect from a debut author. Kady's character development is psychologically astute, and her plot has more than enough twists to please even the most demanding thriller reader.

I was not previously familiar with Kady or Blackweald Press; what attracted me to Irreparable Deeds was that it is set in Rome, Georgia. I drive through Rome on a regular basis, and one of my daughters attended college there, so I was interested in its fictional treatment. I had to keep reminding myself that Kady's story is set in 1976, with flashbacks to the 1940s, however; Rome is no longer "a small town" with a persistent smell. Ordinarily, the dissonance I experienced with each reference to Rome would have jerked me out of the story, but in this case, Kady's pacing kept me immersed in the lives of Laura and Danlyn. This is the type of book for which the "page turner" and "couldn't put it down" clichés were invented.

I could not find any other books from this publisher, so it may well be that Blackweald Press is a pseudonym under which Kady self-published. If so, the major publishing houses should take notice; Kady deserves a platform from which she can reach a wider audience.

I received a free copy of Irreparable Deeds through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am an avid reader in the horror genre, and while Irreparable Deeds may not contain zombies or vampires, it could definitely be billed as a horror story. Because it does contain monsters, the worst kind of monsters: the human kind.
Sloane Kady's tale of a family gone wrong is at times heartbreaking and terrifying. Throughout all of the emotions she puts the reader through, her story is always believable. The characters are real people with very real problems and flaws. The story flows smoothly, gaining momentum like a roller coaster barreling down a steep incline. The writing is phenomenal, packed with suspense, intrigue and gritty emotion. This is a brilliant novel that deserves, no, demands to be read.
I never put spoilers in my reviews but I will say this: I simply can not wait for the inevitable sequel.Irreparable Deeds

I highly recommend that any fan of suspense/thrillers should read Irreparable Deeds. This novel is enticing and leads the reader into Laura's world in the very first chapter. My favorite part of the novel was the constant revelations and surprises. I always found myself absorbed in Kady's novel and shocked by all the twists and turns. None of the plot twists were predictable or weak either. The characters were so amazing. She wrote them incredibly well and you really felt for the characters. Sloane Kady's writing style was immaculate and I can't wait for more work from her.

Laura (an alcoholic, but trying not to be), and her daughter Danlyn return to her old home whilst she sorts her life out. As she didn't exactly have a great upbringing with an alcoholic father, a nasty cruel mother, you have to question why on earth she would choose that option? She discovers the truth about her father and the other members of the household. This is definitely a house, not a home. Sometimes you want to give Laura a shake and sometimes give her a hug. The writing is skilled and the twists keep coming especially the last few lines. It will be interesting to see what the author comes up with next! It was oh so dark and oh so creepy .... the kind which makes you scared to turn the next page but at the same time you know you can't put it down. The author has managed to create one of those books where you desperately want to keep shouting at the characters "don't go there!" and yet you know they will and they must.
Family secrets, family trees, psychopathic relatives .. it is all there ... try and put it down. You will be hooked!

I won a free copy of this amazing book thanks to the First Reads giveaway program.

I honestly haven't read anything this good in such a long time. I loved every page of it. It was perfect.

I couldn't believe this was Sloane Kady's first novel. She's such a brilliant writer, I'm sure she'll have a long and successful career telling more and more beautifully dark and honest tales. The scenery she creates with her words are compelling and at times chilling. There was such a sense of female empowerment in her two main characters Lauara and Danlyn. It had me rooting for them the whole way through.

Irreparable Deeds was incredible. I can't wait to read more from Sloane Kady in the future.

Irreparable Deeds is a thrilling novel about family relationships, secrets, lies, betrayal and alcoholism. It is heart wrenching and never easy to read a story involving family and children with so many psychological problems.
Although I did find this book uncomfortable to read at times and there were some loathsome characters, especially Vivian and her evil and controlling ways, it kept me interested throughout. I did like Laura even though she was flawed, but who can blame her for that.
Irreparable Deeds is a hauntingly sad but beautiful story where love and forgiveness shines and I can highly recommend it.
