3.75 rounded up. My Hart to Keep by Sable Hart is a dark, obsessive prison romance. Elara is deeply traumatized and goes day by day simply existing. She gets asked to clean the newest prisoner's cell, Jester. Jester isn't your typical inmate though, he is dangerous, manipulative, possessive, and completely unhinged. And he becomes fixated on Elara and so begins the game. Not a lot happens in this book until towards the end, I feel this was more a set up for what is to come in the next book as we are left with a cliffhanger.

This book is absolutely unhinged! It is extremely dark and the trigger warnings are no joke. It is not for the faint of HART. And yet… I absolutely ate it up!
I loved Elara, she is such a likeable FMC despite being very much an imperfect heroine. She was real and her struggles were ones I couldn’t help but sympathize with.
This book leans into its morally grey MMC but doesn’t end with your typical HEA.
I spent the whole book going “where is she going with this…” which I loved.

Elara works as a cleaner in Blackthorne Prison, where she catches the attention of The Jester, a criminally insane psychopath who becomes completely obsessed with her.
The premise definitely pulled me in, and The Jester is absolutely unhinged. 😂 His obsession with Elara made for a very intriguing dynamic, and I’m very curious to see where their story goes.
Not a lot happened story-wise until towards the end, and then we were hit with a cliffhanger! So whilst I enjoyed the book, I think it was more of a setup for what’s to come.
That being said, I’m definitely intrigued enough to continue the series because I need to know what happens next.

can't wait to see what's next
I received this book as an advance copy and these are my honest thoughts.
4.5⭐ This book didn't originally hit me in the right mood. It took just a little bit for me to really get into it but once I was ready for a dark MF story I finished it in one sitting. Elara is just trying to get by, live her life, and keep her head down. She doesn't expect to be thrust directly into the path of a notorious criminal hell bent on seeing the world become it's basest self. She definitely doesn't expect to become his biggest obsession. This was well paced, the manipulation was easy to fall for but difficult to detect. I was kept on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next. I am excited to see where the story goes from here.

His fixation on Elara creates an intense cat-and-mouse dynamic that becomes increasingly difficult to put down.
Elara is a compellingly imperfect heroine. She is isolated, grieving, financially strapped, and using alcohol to numb years of trauma. Her decisions are sometimes frustrating, but they also feel connected to her desperate need to be seen and to feel something again. Jester recognizes that vulnerability immediately and watching him methodically work his way into her mind is as unsettling as it is captivating.
Blackthorne Penitentiary provides a wonderfully grim and claustrophobic setting. The bloodstained cells, underground corridors, corrupt guards, and constant threat of violence give the story an atmosphere that feels oppressive from the beginning. Beneath the romance, the book also explores grief, wealth, corruption, victim exploitation, and the uneasy difference between justice and revenge.
The middle occasionally becomes repetitive as Elara cycles between fear, desire, and denial, and the prison’s security requires some suspension of disbelief. Nevertheless, the psychological tension and volatile chemistry kept me invested. The ending raises the stakes dramatically and closes on a chilling cliffhanger that left me eager for the next book.

Absolutly amazing book, ensnared my attention right from the beginning. The way The Jester is portrayed was so captivating, I immidiatly wanted more. It was so unhinged, do not take the trigger warnings lightly! This book ment business!
I loved Elaras character. She wasnt your typical “bada**” heroine, she was a real person people could relate to in some way or another. I felt for her, going through life with the same cycle day in and day out, she was just trying to survive day by day. The Jester zeroed in on her immediatly, he SEEN her even when she thought she was a nobody. I wish the book delved more into Elara’s past, but maybe book two will have more 👀
The Jester isnt portrayed as a villian turned good, he is insane, manipulative, incredibly possessive even before he has her. I was obsessed with him the entire book and couldnt wait for his POV chapters so i could see into his mind more. I do wish however that he had more then he did through the book BUT I devoured it all regardless.
Blackthorne Penitentiary wasnt your typical follow the rules prison. It is portrayed as a dark and dangerous place, filled with the most dangerously evil prisoners. Dank corridors, blood stained walls and dark creepy corridors leading to the fowlest prisoners. It is filled with corruption and you dont know who to trust and who is in the pocked of an inmate.
The ending was a wild ride, I thought i knew what was coming but I was so shocked! What a cliffhanger!
I seriously can not wait for book two to come out!

What is even in the book? Crack? I was lucky enough to get this book as an ARC, and I am so glad that I was chosen to read it. I could not put it down! I felt so bad for Elara and could totally relate to her and the fact that she was just going through life on autopilot day after day and I LOVED the fact that Jester saw through her and could tell what she was really feeling. Is it weird to say that I wish I had a Jester in my life that saw me and the not the mask I was wearing. It's weird right?
I will say that the only two things that bugged me in the book (which aren't that big of deal) are the fact that I didn't like how quickly Elara was ready to give Jester a BJ or the fact that they f**k so quickly. It's like calm down girl I get that he gets you and actually sees you, but you don't have to give the goods away just yet. The other thing is that I really wanted more chapters from Jesters POV. As I have mentioned in previous reviews, I always love getting the MMCS POV and love hearing what they think in certain situations. What makes the MMC tick? Those are the only things that kept this from being a five star but again very minor things.
I am super bummed that it ended on a cliffhanger and that I have to wait until next year to find out what happens next, but I seriously cannot wait!

I absolutely loved this book! The slow-burn romance was everything I wanted, with tension that built naturally rather than rushing straight into insta-lust. I really appreciated how Elara struggled with her feelings for the Jester while still recognising how dangerous and mysterious he was. It made their relationship feel much more believable and kept me completely invested.
Elara was a fantastic character to follow, and I loved getting to know her throughout the story. At the same time, the Jester remained an intriguing mystery, leaving me constantly questioning his motives, what he was hiding, and what he might do next.
The pacing was brilliant, and despite being a true slow burn, the story never felt slow. The darker elements, mystery, tension and romance all worked together perfectly. And when the spice finally arrived, it was definitely worth the wait!
Overall, this was such an addictive and enjoyable dark romance. I loved the atmosphere, the characters and especially the slow-building chemistry. I’m already excited for the next book and desperate to uncover more about the Jester! Definitely a 5-star read for me! ❤️🔥

I really enjoyed My Hart to Keep. This is a true dark slow burn, and I loved that Elara genuinely struggles with her feelings for the Jester. She doesn’t immediately fall into insta-lust or forget that he’s dangerous just because she’s attracted to him. The tension builds gradually, which makes their relationship feel much more believable.
We really get to know Elara throughout the book, while the Jester remains much more of a mystery. I actually liked that imbalance because it kept me intrigued and constantly wondering about his motives and what he was hiding.

MFC- Elara- traumatic past she has fooled herself into thinking she healing from. It lies deep like a festering wound creating a darkness in her mind. Works as part of a janitorial staff at a maximum security prison. Assigned to the worst of the worst, she meets Jester (MMC).
The Jester is a mass murdering psycho who's able to mind Fk almost anyone who gives him ANY interaction. He is dominant and obsessive. Look at her lose your eyes, touch her lose your hands or life.
Elara is set up for, what seems like, failure from the get go. Having to clean his cell everyday and being his sole focus. She tries desperately to not want the Jester. Elara is confilcted and believes herself gullible. I'm not so sure she is when it comes to his feelings/behaviors toward her. Let the games begin!!
I am looking forward to book two and i hope to gain more insight into what happened to create the Jester, if anything. Also, would love to see Elara get more closure from her past and revenge would be great!

Wow!!!! I LOVED this so much but that cliffhanger... the wait for the next book. I could cry.
Jester was the most chaotic unhinged man and I was here for it. He was absolutely brutal and his crazy seriously bled though the pages. He openly talks about how corrupt and terrible people are. He was known for going after mobsters and other seedy characters. I enjoyed his crazy when it came to his "doll", "sweetface", or "sugarplum" 🖤

Just finished my ARC of My Hart To Keep and somehow devoured it in TWO DAYS.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a dark romance quite like this one. The psychological twist, the mind games, the unpredictability… I was completely hooked.
And The Jester? The way this MMC was written is pure genius. You could easily picture him as a Batman villain or dropped straight into an episode of Criminal Minds.
The story had such a great flow, and even though the spice was more limited (I’d give it 🌶️🌶️), it didn’t matter because I was completely immersed in the story.
And now I have a serious problem…
I’m ready to follow The Jester straight into Book 2. Because that ending has me needing the next book YESTERDAY.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The characters were amazing and I was actually starting to root for the Jester’s and Elara’s relationship. The ended on a major cliffhanger so I’m anxious to see where their relationship goes in the next book. This was definitely a good inspo from Harley Quinn & The Joker for sure, which I think is what the author was going for?
I think I was hoping for more character development on the Jesters part and learn more about him, but I’m hoping that’ll be touched on more heavily in book 2. Elara’s development was more touched on here and she was relatable. Overall, I really enjoyed this unhinged and forbidden love type of story and can’t wait to read the next!

I struggled with how to rate this, as I didn't love the writing itself, but I really liked the characters and loved the storyline. So, I guess I'm rounding down? as it's probably more of a 4¼ at the most.
I liked the FMC, and despite the MMC being the villain, I'm holding out hope that maybe he can be redeemed a little?
This book is definitely more about plot than spice, and I'd consider it a slow burn dark "romance". I will be anxiously awaiting the sequel.

Absolutely loved this book!
I LOVE the Jester and Elara.
Her story is so tragic and so sad and I had tears in my eyes when she revealed her past and why she was so alone.
But I loved that she found the Jester. It gave me the Joker vibes sometimes but they are very very different characters and I couldn't believe that ending. I was waiting for it but I didn't expect to be sitting on the edge of my seat!
I am absolutely thrilled with this book and can't wait for the 2nd.

This one was a little hard for me to rate, I loved it, and sometimes I found it hard to get through the story. At no point was I bored or not interested just sometimes there weren’t enough engaging scenes that pulled me into the story. I also wanted more written “draw” between the MC’s, leading to any smexy parts.
This was a 4 ⭐️ for me. The end really pulled its weight.

Amazing story that keeps you on your toes. Maybe I am a bit deranged too for having Elara’s feelings towards the Jester. Can’t wait for book two and maybe there we’ll get more chapters in his POV, also seeing more of him. I love myself a good villain, especially if he loves his woman. Well in his crazy ways of course. This story is a slow burn but god it didn’t feel like one, Elara’s story is so real written that it made me wonder if there is a place where things happen like that, and let’s be honest, there is.

A deliciously dark read. Elara's life becomes entangled with an inmate - Jester when her job as a cleaner in a prison brought her into his World. Kicking off a dangerously manipulative game of cat and mouse with Jester pulling all of the strings from inside his cell. Oh boy the heat between these two characters was just off of the charts, hot! It was the tension and the back & forth between them both that I absolutely loved in this book. It definitely kept me on my toes right up until that knockout cliff-hanger ending. So bloody good!

I was thoroughly entranced with the story of Elara and Jester. It had plenty of spice but also an amazing plot. I'm really hoping that book 2 dives more into the Jester and why he is the way he is. And I'm dying to read about him and Elara being reunited and if he unalives a certain person from Elaras past who definitely deserves it. Will she turn to the dark side and get her hands dirty too? Gosh the wait for book 2 is gonna be hard.

If you are looking for that Joker and Harley vibe then you definitely need to read this dark and sinfully spicy romance about a traumatised woman who cleans at an asylum, and its latest resident.

Meet Elara and Jester. She was oblivious. He saw her true self. This is a perfect slow burn romance that had dashes of spice to keep you turning those pages! The story had great pace and loved the back and forth of the POV’s. These two together just hit right, the mystery, the tension…I could not get enough. Of course this is book 1 of a duet so this lovely cliffhanger makes me long for book 2 to hurry up! New author for me and I’m a huge fan. Spice is 🌶️🌶️ and stars are 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is a true dark slow burn, it was hard to put down!!
This book was well written, so descriptive, so gritty - I can almost taste the chemicals in the air. I loved the characters, the MMC is beautifully unhinged and the chemistry with the FMC is so authentic.

Literally amazing.
I LOVED the story telling, the mania, the twisted obsession and games. I was hooked through it all. I loved how Elara found opportunities to snap back and I think she has more control than what she believes or realizes and I hope there is more to come of her strength, power, and ability to reign in sociopath! The jester was chaos and mania to a T! His chapters were amazing and I cannot wait to see what he unleashes in this series. I cannot wait!

When I say I ate this up, I really mean I ate it up! I'm talking three days to read this, and I'm a slow reader.
Full transparency, I usually hate most MFCs in dark romance reads because I find them a little annoying (oops, lol), but I really didn't get this vibe from Elara. She's really likeable; her struggles are real and relatable and it made me as a read feel sorry for her in some occasions.
Elara is a prison cell cleaner barely making rent, when she's offered a new position of cleaning the cell of an extremely dangerous, mass murderer, known as the Jester. He immediately takes a liking to Elara to the point of absolute obsessed. He's unhinged, he's possessive, he's obsessive and he's a literal psycho stalker.
The storyline is mainly smut/spice until the end of the book and it's so well written that you just never want to put the book down! The end had me asking where the author was going with the story and oh did she deliver! It's kind of a cliffhanger but it's a good one, I can't wait to see where the story goes next!

It was great , fast paced and real , it wasn’t a instant love type book it was real and kept you waiting and wanting the characters were relatable and the writing style was easy to read and not over written , I really enjoyed this and can’t wait for the next in the series , highly recommend.

This was a rollercoaster of emotions. It drew me right in to how Elara felt and all the pain she’s endured in her life and how she’s just surviving without living until the jester that is. Still closed off to the idea of him she lies to herself to push on to survive and I can’t wait to see the come back of the jester!

Thanks to the author for providing me this book early. If this book is a promise for the rest of the series it is going to be one of the best book series I have read. It took me 2 chapters to get into the book, but when I did, I could not put this down. I truly felt what the FMC felt. And the Jester what a psychopath. He got under my skin. The story is not over and I will be waiting for book 2.
