Kimberley was born in London and her family moved back to Australia when she was three years old. She grew up in Queensland where she currently lives.

Kimberley has written for as long as she can remember and she is proud to write in many genres. She is an award-winning writer in children’s, historical and speculative fiction under her birth name Kim Wilkins. She adopted the pen name Kimberley Freeman for her commercial women’s fiction novels Duet and Gold Dust to honour her maternal grandmother and to try and capture the spirit of the page-turning novels she has always loved to read. Kim has an Honours degree, a Masters degree and a PhD from The University of Queensland where she is also a lecturer. She lives in Brisbane with her young family.

You know a book is really good when once you've finished it all you want to do is book a holiday and visit the place you've just been reading about. And that's precisely what I wanted to do once I'd finished reading Evergreen Falls. The setting for this book is in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia and the way the author describes it in this book she makes it sound utterly beautiful.

Dual timelines are common now I find especially in historical fiction novels such as this one and Aussie author Kimberley Freeman has done a brilliant job in this part of the book. A truly delightful and very enjoyable story of love, mystery, relationships and what about the gorgeous cover this book has. Highly recommended.

Lauren Beck is thirty years old, but her mother has always done everything in her power to keep her safe because she is afraid something would happen to Lauren. And, that means that Lauren has never really been able to live her life and do as she wishes. But now she has moved away from home, taken a job at the Blue Mountains café. She has also met Tomas, a Danish architect that is overseeing the Evergreen Spa Hotel's renovations and through a series of events she finds in the hotel steamy love letters from the 1920s.

I have a weakness for books with parallel storylines, so when I saw this gorgeous book on Edelweiss and read the blurb was it an easy decision to request the book. The book made me think of Kate Morton's books, with a secret in the past that is being revealed. I did find the story a bit predictable, but nevertheless, I still enjoyed reading the book.

I preferred the present time when it comes to the two different storylines. I just found Lauren's relationship with Tomas more interesting than Violets with Sam back in the 20s. Mostly because Sam was just a very weak character and Violet deserved someone better than him. Most of the time Sam just made me annoyed with his love declaration for Violet, I can see why she was so taken with him because she was swept up in his passion. But a future with him, with him being rich and her poor was really just a big dream. But I think that for a moment, for some time she just closed her eyes for the truth and let her be swept off her feet. In the end, I think everlasting worked out for the best for her.

Lauren storyline was more interesting, yes I guessed most of what she discovered before she did it, but I liked her, I liked that she was for the first time standing on her own two feet's, finding love and defying her mother. And, I love the ending, Lauren confronting her mother and father about a past misdeed against her brother.

So, in the end, I want to say that the book was good, predictable sometimes, but nevertheless enjoyable to read.

The 1920's is a rich period of history that is fun to harken back to in historical fiction. It's always interesting to see how far we have progressed since that time in terms of social mores and acceptance. Themes such as women considering career goals over the traditional married life, for example, are remarked upon.
At the very heart of the story, the center of everything, is love. Familial love and romantic love, both of which can be burdensome and riddled with obligations, and no matter what, it can still break down, fail, or backfire. But, the funny thing about love, is that is also rewarding, restorative, inspiring, contagious, and comes in all forms. It has the power to steer people towards forgiveness and healing, ultimately leading to freedom and peace, so in the end it is always triumphant, even if the path is hard and rocky.
Many of the characters in the book experience pain and heartache, but I think each person manages to find the key that will unlock the chains holding them captive.
This is a compelling read on many levels, my only complaint being that Lauren’s voice often felt muted. Her romance with Tomas was rushed along at warp speed too, but it was still satisfying. Another thing that stuck out for me was that the story was told without using a lot of harsh language, and the sexual content is handled with taste, giving it a very stylish tone and a polished finish.
There are many topics addressed here that would make for a very interesting discussion for book club members, or for those who have BOTM reads on Goodreads. This book is certainly one historical fiction readers will enjoy, but will also appeal to those who read contemporary fiction, and maybe even for mystery lovers.

Όλο το βιβλίο τόσο ατμοσφαιρικό αποπνέει μία έντονη μελαγχολία που τη ζεις συνοδευόμενη από το αίσθημα και το μυστήριο.Μυστικά που αποκαλύπτονται σιγά σιγά στα μάτια σου μέχρι και την τελευταία στιγμή.Η συγγραφέας καταφέρνει με απόλυτη επιτυχία από την πρώτη σελίδα να αιχμαλωτίσει τον αναγνώστη σε ένα ξέφρενο ρυθμό που κρατά γερά μέχρι το τέλος του!

Η ανακάλυψη των ερωτικών επιστολών στην δυτική πτέρυγα του ξενοδοχείου αποτελεί το έναυσμα για να ξεδιπλωθεί η ιστορία μας. Η Λόρεν, φεύγει από το σπίτι των γονιών της σε μια προσπάθεια να απογαλακτιστεί από την υπερπροστατευτική μητέρα της. Προσπαθώντας να ανακαλύψει περισσότερα για τους πρωταγωνιστές αυτών των επιστολών, αντιλαμβάνεται πόσα έχει χάσει από τη ζωή της μέχρι τώρα.
Η Βάιολετ, πιάνει δουλειά στο ξενοδοχείο κι ερωτεύεται έναν από τους ενοίκους του αν και οι κανόνες του ξενοδοχείου και της εποχής εκείνης δεν το επιτρέπουν.
Το βιβλίο κινείται ανάμεσα σε παρόν και παρελθόν χωρίς να κουράζει, μιας κι η συγγραφέας χειρίζεται πολύ έξυπνα αυτές τις εναλλαγές

Bir gece kuvvetli bir kar fırtınasının gelmesiyle tutku dolu aşkları kara gömülür. Ta ki karlar eriyip o gecenin sırrı ortaya çıkana kadar.
2006: Lauren erkek kardeşinin rahatsızlığından dolayı dış dünyadan kopuk bir hayat sürmüştür. Ve onun ölümünün ardından kendisini kardeşinin en mutlu olduğu yerde Blue Mountains'te bulur. Zümrüt Kaplıca Oteli'nin restorasyonu sırasında otele giren Lauren 1926 yılında yaşanmış bir aşkın mektuplarını keşfeder. Ancak keşfi bununla sınırlı değildir.
Kitabı gerçekten çok severek okudum. Her sayfayı merakla çevirdim özellikle de sonlara doğru bendeki merak tavan yaptı :')
Kimberley Freeman'ın anlatımını seviyorum. Birde işin içine iki farklı zamanda geçen iki farklı hayat hikayesi girince daha da seviyorum.
Kitabın ilk bölümünü okuduktan sonra Violet'e ne olacağını merak ediyorsunuz zaten. Ve kitapta çoğunlukla 1926 yılında yaşanan olaylara ağırlık veriyor.
Bu tarz kitaplardan hoşlananlara kesin tavsiyemdir :')

Δεν είχα διαβάσει άλλο βιβλίο της συγγραφέως, πιο πριν, αλλά από την πρώτη ημέρα κυκλοφορίας του, είτε από το καταπληκτικό εξώφυλλο είτε από την περίληψή του στο οπισθόφυλλο, μου φάνηκε (και αποδείχθηκε) πολύ καλό. Από τις (πολύ) πρώτες σελίδες του σε προιδεάζει για το τραγικό γεγονός, που στην πορεία αποδεικνύεται ότι έχει διαδραματίσει άμεσα καταλυτικό ρόλο τόσο στη ζωή όσων το έζησαν από κοντά όσο και εκείνων που έμμεσα δέχονται την επιρροή του, πολλά χρόνια μετά. Καμία περιττή περιγραφή, οι εναλλαγές μεταξύ παρόντος και παρελθόντος σωστά τοποθετημένες για να μην κουράζουν (ή και να ....εκνευρίζουν), χαρακτήρες αληθοφανείς, "γήινοι", με συμπεριφορές αντίστοιχες της ανθρώπινης διαφορετικότητας και των έντονων συναισθημάτων που δημιουργούνται από καταστάσεις οι οποίες πολλές φορές δεν είναι προβλέψιμες ή αναμενόμενες, ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία, και με τέλος, λίγο απρόσμενο από μία αναπάντεχη ανακάλυψη. Μου άρεσε δε, ιδιαίτερα ότι οι κοινωνικές και ταξικές διαφορές παρουσιάσθηκαν με τρόπο απολύτως ρεαλιστικό, χωρίς υπερβολές ρέπουσες προς τον μελοδραματισμό, αλλά όπως ακριβώς ήταν, δηλαδή ως ένας καθοριστικός και κρίσιμος παράγοντας για τη δημιουργία και εξέλιξη των ανθρωπίνων σχέσεων {είτε φιλικών είτε συναισθηματικών κλπ} στις αρχές του περασμένου αιώνα, πολύ περισσότερο που για την εξέλιξη της πλοκής, αναδείχθηκαν σε κυρίαρχο στοιχείο της. Συνοψίζοντας, θα πω ότι ανταποκρίθηκε στις προσδοκίες μου και με το παραπάνω.

Two and a half stars.
Having loved Lighthouse Bay and Ember Island, the other two Kimberley Freeman books I have read, I was so excited to get an uncorrected proof copy of this from the Reading Room and Hachette Australia. I immediately thrust aside other books waiting to be read and dived into this one expecting to love it. Once again this is a story spanning two different times, which seems to be a popular literary concept at the moment.
There is the story of Violet Armstrong who is working at the Evergreen Spa hotel and her interaction with other staff and guest at the hotel. Then there is the modern story in 2014 of Lauren Beck who takes a job up the Blue Mountains. During the renovations of the Evergreen Spa Hotel she meets Tomas, a Danish architect. The stories start to merge as Lauren finds a pile of letters from 1926 in a wing of the old hotel. The letters tell of an affair and hint at a shocking secret.
Reading the blurb it has all the ingredients to intrigue and yet... yet I struggled to read this book. That was mainly because I didn’t like the characters. Violet I found stupid and naive in the extreme. I wanted to slap her and tell her to wake up to herself. I couldn’t believe she would put up with the treatment from Sam who I found a spoilt and unlikable character and a user of other people. Sam does say at one point, ‘people usually let me do what I want.’ That just about sums him up. I really couldn’t see what there was that was to love about him. On the whole I didn’t care enough about any of the characters with the exception of Clive, a worker at the hotel, who loves Violet. He is lovely. One thing I liked was the comment on page 412 from Clive, when he talks about what real love is.’ It’s sacrifice and selflessness.’ That to me was the truest line in the book.
Another thing this book does is that it gives a picture of the devastating effect of drugs, not just on the person taking them but on those who love them. The setting was great and well conveyed. Lauren was probably the best of the characters. But even she didn’t grab my attention all that much. I kept waiting for this book to grip me like the others by Kimberly Freeman did. Sadly that never happened. It took me longer than normal to read this book. I never felt that compelling urge to get back to it that I did with a great book and so ended up largely disappointed. Maybe others will have a different take on it but, sorry to say, for me it was okay but nowhere near what as good as I expected.

Οι εκδόσεις Διόπτρα επέστρεψαν και φέτος με ένα ακόμα μυθιστόρημα της αγαπημένης -πλέον- και του ελληνικού κοινού, Kimberley Freeman, που για μία ακόμη φορά είναι εμπνευσμένο από γεγονότα της ζωής της γιαγιάς της. Μάλιστα, σε αντίθεση με τα προηγούμενα βιβλία της, αυτή τη φορά, το συγκεκριμένο γεγονός, είναι κάτι που αναφέρεται ξεκάθαρα και στο οπισθόφυλλο του βιβλίου. Κάποιος που δεν έχει ξαναδιαβάσει βιβλίο της Freeman και δεν γνωρίζει το βιογραφικό της, μπορεί να γοητευτεί από αυτή τη μικρή λεπτομέρεια. Κάποιος, πάλι, που την γνωρίζει καλά, μάλλον θα αναρωτηθεί πόσα πια μπορεί να είδε και να έζησε η γυναίκα εκείνη που αποτελεί την συγγραφική της μούσα. Όπως και να 'χει, όμως, κανείς δεν μπορεί να αρνηθεί πως, όσον αφορά τουλάχιστον την συγκεκριμένη ιστορία, η συγγραφέας παραδίδει ένα μυθιστόρημα άρτιο και καλογραμμένο, με πολύ συναίσθημα.

Χωρισμένο σε δύο εποχές, το βιβλίο μας ταξιδεύει πότε στο 1926 και πότε στο 2014, όπου πάντα με φόντο το ξενοδοχείο Οι Καταρράκτες των Ρόδων, ξετυλίγεται το κουβάρι δύο ιστοριών που αν και καμία σχέση δεν έχουν η μία με την άλλη, καταφέρνουν να δεθούν με έναν τρόπο μοναδικό, με το παρελθόν να επηρεάζει το παρόν και, ουσιαστικά, να καθορίζει το μέλλον. Τον χειμώνα του 1926, η Βάιολετ που εργάζεται στο ξενοδοχείο και οι λιγοστοί επισκέπτες του, θα αποκλειστούν σε αυτό εξαιτίας μιας χιονοθύελλας που θα καλύψει μυστικά και πάθη. Το 2014, η Λόρεν, θα εργαστεί κι εκείνη με τη σειρά της στο ανακαινισμένο πλέον ξενοδοχείο, όπου εκτός από τον μεγάλο έρωτα στο πρόσωπο του Τόμας, θα βρει μια σειρά ερωτικών επιστολών που θα φέρουν στο φως, όχι μόνο μια παθιασμένη σχέση, αλλά κι ένα καλά κρυμμένο μυστικό που περίμενε δεκαετίες για να αποκαλυφθεί. Και μαζί με το μυστικό αυτό, στη Λόρεν, αποκαλύπτεται και η προσωπική της αλήθεια που την οδηγεί στην πιο σημαντική απόφαση της ζωής της.

Ένα από τα πιο δύσκολα στοιχεία, όταν ένα μυθιστόρημα ταξιδεύει ανάμεσα στο παρελθόν και στο παρόν, είναι το να διατηρηθεί η ανάλογη ισορροπία, τόσο ποσοτικά, όσο και ποιοτικά. Η Freeman, πλέον, έχει αρκετά μεγάλη εμπειρία και έτσι, καταφέρνει να κάνει το κείμενό της να αποδώσει τα μέγιστα, αφού χειρίζεται άψογα το τεχνικό σκέλος του αφηγηματικού μέρους, που είναι ζωτικής σημασίας. Κακά τα ψέματα, όσο καλή κι αν είναι μια ιστορία, όταν υπάρχουν αφηγηματικοί αναχρονισμοί, είναι πολύ εύκολο να πέσει ο συγγραφέας στην παγίδα την φλυαρίας, της επικίνδυνα περιττής επανάληψης, της χρονικής ασυνέπειας ή και της δημιουργίας κενών στη γραμμή εξέλιξης και ροής των γεγονότων που συνθέτουν το όλων μίας ιστορίας. Τίποτα απ' όλα αυτά, όμως, δεν υφίσταται στην προκειμένη περίπτωση, με την μετάβαση από τη μία εποχή στην άλλη να γίνεται, όχι μόνο ομαλά, αλλά με τέτοιον τρόπο που παρατείνει την αγωνία μας και εντείνει τι μυστήριο.

Αν και σε καμία περίπτωση, "Οι Καταρράκτες των Ρόδων", δεν είναι ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα, ιδιαίτερα εξαιτίας της εποχής στην οποία τοποθετείται η παρελθοντική υποϊστορία του, έχει κάποια στοιχεία του λογοτεχνικού αυτού είδους, κυρίως όσον αφορά το αφηγηματικό σκέλος και την αποτύπωση λεπτομερειών. Η Freeman είναι λεπτομερής στις περιγραφές της, το κείμενό της βρίθει ζωντάνιας και παραστατικότητας, χωρίς όμως να γίνεται κουραστικό ή φλύαρο. Επίσης, αποτυπώνει με πολύ όμορφο τρόπο την έννοια των ταξικών διαφορών στις εκάστοτε εποχές, που αν και έχει αλλάξει στα σημεία, παραμένει ίδια στον πυρήνα της. Ωστόσο, αυτό το πετυχαίνει χωρίς να καταφεύγει σε κλισέ, φτηνούς μελοδραματισμούς κάτι που, ειδικά στο παρελθοντικό σκέλος της ιστορίας, θα μπορούσε να είναι εξαιρετικά εύκολο. Βέβαια, σε αυτό βοηθάνε και οι ίδιοι της οι πρωταγωνιστές που είναι ειλικρινείς, γήινοι και όχι εξωπραγματικοί, βιώνοντας αληθινά συναισθήματα, σε αληθινές καταστάσεις, αντιδρώντας φυσιολογικά και ρεαλιστικά.

Αναμφίβολα, το βιβλίο αυτό της Freeman, απ' όσα τουλάχιστον έχουν φτάσει μέχρι στιγμής στη χώρα μας, είναι το καλύτερό της, το πιο άρτιο, το πιο ολοκληρωμένο. Μοιρασμένο σε δύο χρόνους και δύο εποχές, καταφέρνει να αφηγηθεί δύο ιστορίες που μοιραία έμελλαν να ενωθούν με μια αόρατη κλωστή, με την ιστορία του 1926 να έχει παίξει μεγαλύτερο ρόλο απ' όσο ίσως υποθέταμε στην αρχή, καθορίζοντας για πολλά χρόνια μετά αποφάσεις, συνειδήσεις, ολάκερες ζωές ανθρώπων που με τον έναν ή τον άλλον τρόπο, δεν μπορούσαν να ξεφύγουν από το χειμώνα εκείνο. Μπορεί ορισμένα σημεία να είναι προβλέψιμα, αυτό όμως δεν αναιρεί το μυστηριώδες πέπλο που καλύπτει συνολικά την ιστορία, τις εκπλήξεις που εμφανίζονται εκεί που δεν το περιμένεις, αλλά και το ανατρεπτικό φινάλε που σε ξαφνιάζει και σε ικανοποιεί στο μέγιστο βαθμό. "Οι Καταρράκτες των Ρόδων", λοιπόν, είναι ένα όμορφο, βαθιά ανθρωποκεντρικό και συναισθηματικό βιβλίο που δεν πρέπει να χάσετε.

This is the fourth book I've read by this author. They're all the same: Jump back and forth between two stories, one set in the past and one in modern times. In the end, the plots run together. The jumps between time eras get distracting. I'd like to see her write a story that doesn't do these things. The novelty has worn off.

The 1920s part: Very unlovable characters. Violet is about as dumb as they get. She has unprotected sex, despite being warned, and with no birth control, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where that leads. She also falls for a total loser and bends to his every need. She does something over-the-top stupid at the end of the story with tragic consequences. Sam is immature, unstable and extremely selfish. He doesn't care that Violet functions on fumes from sleep deprivation. He doesnt care that he jeopardizes her job, so long as his physical needs are met. He's a drug addict.

The first book I read by this author was Wildflower Hill. While there was sex in that book, the descriptions were pretty general and the sex scenes didn't go into a lot of detail. The sex scenes in Evergreen Falls are more like porn.

The 2014 part: If you are a liberal, you will love it. If you're a conservative, you'll be made to feel like a "bigot" (quoted from the story) if you hold different views. This is the last book I will read by this author due to these views being preached at me.

The only good things this book has going for it are the lack of swear words and the setting.

Lorena dirba padavėja „Žaliojo SPA“ viešbutyje. Netrukus susipažįsta su Tomu, kuris įleidžia ją į remontuojamą viešbutį. Ten ji randa senus 1926-ųjų meilės laiškus. Taip ji pradeda aiškintis, kas tų laiškų autorius... Na, o Semas ir Violeta buvo įsimylėjėliai 1926-aisiais. Violeta dirbo padavėja viešbutyje, o Semas turtingas svečias. Semas priklausomas nuo opijaus ir jo sesuo Flora nori jį atpratinti, tačiau netikėtai jis įsimyli Violetą ir jie ima slapta susitikinėti...

Knyga mane labai sudomino viršeliu. Galiu teigti, jog beveik niekada neskaitau knygų aprašymų, nes noriu, kad knyga būtų siurprizas. Tai mano pirma pažintis su autore ir labai vykusi. Nors knygą skaičiau ilgai – tai nereiškia, jog ji man nepatiko. Anaiptol. Visokios paslaptys ir dvi laiko juostos man visada labai patinka.

Pats siužetas nebuvo nuspėjamas, nes negalėjau atspėti kaip baigsis Semo ir Violetos meilė. Visokios pabaigos sukosi galvoje skaitant. Bet knyga nebuvo kažkas tokio, kas sujaudintų širdį. Vienas dalykas tik palietė mane – Semo priklausomybė. Šeimoje turėjau asmenį priklausomą nuo alkoholio, tad puikiai įsijaučiau į Floros jausmus broliui.

This is the fourth book I read by this author and I must say, I thoroughly enjoy her writing! I really love how the story flips between past and present and you uncover both stories at once. And I really enjoyed that the present part of the story was centred around uncovering the mystery of the past part of the story. It made for such an interesting read, I felt like I was uncovering the answers along with the characters as it went along!

It seems that I’m on a bit of a roll lately what with all the dual timeline novels I’ve been reading that are enriched with old letters and secrets, but I’m definitely not complaining because I just love the intrigue and suspense created by the authors who use their protagonists to dig deeper and uncover sometimes scandalous events. After all, who doesn’t like a good scandal!

Thirty year old Lauren Beck has led an extremely sheltered life in a stifling environment with basically only her mother, father and brother for company. Born and bred in Tasmania, she’s recently escaped the confines of her parental home and with freedom now at her fingertips, she’s developed just a bit of a rebellious streak as she tries to conquer her naivety by going on a journey of independence and self-discovery – if only her mother would stop phoning her all the time.

Now living and working in the Blue Mountains, the last place her deceased brother was ever happy, she embarks on that journey firstly by getting herself a job at the local café and then befriending Tomas, the architect overseeing the renovations at the once magnificent Evergreen Spa Hotel. When he accidentally leaves a clearly marked key on one of the tables, her curiosity gets the better of her and she finds herself exploring the rundown hotel and discovering a stack of old love letters filled with enough passion to make her blush.

As her and Tomas’ friendship grows, he gives her unhindered access to the hotel but when she is discovered by a security guard with further access being denied and Tomas is called overseas to a family emergency, she continues her explorations in the grounds and discovers a cave with an inscription in its wall. Knowing that the initials SHB belong to the same person mentioned in the letters, she is overcome by the desire to find out exactly who those initials belong to and who the mystery woman is.

From here, the narrative segues into 1926, introducing us to Violet Armstrong, a moralistic young woman who has recently lost her job. Knowing that she is responsible for caring for her mother who suffers with debilitating arthritis, she lands a job at the Evergreen Spa Hotel with the help of her friend Clive.

It’s quite obvious that the majority of guests at the hotel are far above Violet’s station in life and she is warned from the outset not to become friendly with any of them. However, she catches the eye of Sam, the opium-addicted son of a wealthy grazing family and can’t help herself falling for this young man who clandestinely and relentlessly pursues her, promising her the world. So begins a story of love and desire, passion and pain which can only end in tragedy. Or will it?

As Lauren untangles the secrets and scandal surrounding Sam and Violet, she also discovers the truth and reasons behind her brother's happiness in the Blue Mountains, all the while learning that she, too, is worthy of real love.

I’ve been meaning to get to Ember Island by Kimberley Freeman (which I won in a competition) for a long while now, but the opportunity to do so has not yet arisen. However, after reading Evergreen Falls, I am even more determined to somehow get it into my reading pile as she is yet another great Australian author who deserves to be added to my lengthening list of favourites.

It’s also no secret that I enjoy a parallel storyline and right from the Prologue of Evergreen Falls, which hints at the mystery that will be uncovered, Kimberley skilfully dropped me into a story complete with some great gothic elements from the old crumbling hotel to the inclement weather and the almost oppressive relationship that develops between Violet and Sam.

I was, however, slightly conflicted with regard to the strength of each storyline and, whilst I loved Lauren’s tale about her search for happiness and belonging, I became much more invested in the stronger narrative involving Violet and Sam because of the intrigue and suspense that Kimberley so skilfully builds and carries through. In saying that, Kimberley capably swept me away to a time and place in the past where your station in life determined your future and I was drawn in as an onlooker while their story unfolded.

Filled with numerous characters who will either gain your empathy or earn your contempt, the unmistakable beauty of the Blue Mountains in summertime with a story of hope and self-discovery juxtaposed against the icy cold of its snowy winter featuring a story of treachery and misfortune and the dilapidated charm of a once thriving hotel where secrets abound, this is the ideal read for a day when the rain is beating down on your old tin roof!

Fantastic storyline, stunning setting, a great cast of characters, and just a freaking fabulous tale.

Love anything that tells a story of concealed old letters, historic hotels, and striking locations and this one had that and so much more…love, lust, loss, secrets, snow storm, drama, mystery.

The info about using opium in the 1920s was fascinating.

Books with dual time periods always draw me in. Past and present in this book were both engrossing and very enjoyable.

Highly recommended.

I started reading Evergreen Falls late one night after finishing another book, foolishly believing I would read a few pages, get a sense of the novel then fall asleep... but Kimberely Freeman and her tale of the beautiful Violet and introvert Lauren had other plans that involved late nights and some anti-social behaviour as I simply had to finish this fabulous book.
Evergreen Falls is a dual narrative in that it tells the story of two different women in two different times but in the one place. It opens with a vignette of tragedy in the Blue Mountains, in 1926, setting the scene for what is about to unfold. Fast-forward to current times and we meet Lauren Beck, a 30-year-old woman who, due to heartbreaking family circumstances, has led a sheltered life in Tasmania. When her section of the novel opens, she’s working at a coffee shop in the Blue Mountains, discovering what it's like to be independent, hold down a job and, much to her delighted surprise, attract the attention of a dashing architect, Tomas, who has come over from Denmark to head up a renovation project on the nearby resort, the hotel, Evergreen Spa.
It's while exploring parts of the building with Tomas that Lauren happens upon a cache of extraordinarily passionate and candid love letters from someone called SHB to a young woman he so evidently adores and desires. Captivated by the romance and the story behind these, Lauren begins to investigate, all the time aware that love may be slowly blossoming for her.
The reader is then taken back to 1926 and we follow the adventures of the gorgeous and lively Violet Armstrong who, after losing her job in a department store in Sydney is offered work at the very posh Evergreen Spa. With a dependent and ailing mother, Violet leaps at the chance to work in such an exceptional place, but little does she know that her time at the resort will change not only her life, but also that of everyone she encounters that season with tragic and lasting consequences.
The novel then moves back and forth between the two women and the secrets they seek to keep and uncover, drawing parallels between their lives and their differences, exposing their strengths and flaws and how the choices of the past and present will impact upon their futures.
Evergreen Falls is such a page-turner. Freeman evokes both eras
beautifully and presents us with such rich and fully-rounded characters. Class and other differences are explored, as are the complexities of families and the bonds that bind us whether we like it or not. Bigotry and assumptions about others - made on the basis of ignorance and fear - are exposed as damaging, but in this novel they also become the lynchpin through which more generous characters facilitate forgiveness, redemption and understanding.
Setting is so important in this book and the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney are wonderfully evoked, in all their haunting misty-blue greenness
replete with majestic gums, soaring rock formations and tumbling waters as well as the views into forever. Having spent a great deal of my childhood in the Blue Mountains (picking blackberries and searching for fairies with my grandmother and swimming in isolated rock pools), I walked the paths and stood once again on the viewing platform gazing towards the horizon and breathing in that crisp, clean air alongside the characters. Evergreen Spa, to me a thinly disguised Hydro Majestic Hotel, was also a place I inhabited as I read. I sat in the dining room, felt the plush carpet beneath my feet, saw the staff in their uniforms and respected the wishes of the indomitable but kind Miss Zander. The hotel (and mountains) is as much a character as any person and it's fitting that the novel moves from the period in which it was at its peak to the start of its restoration.
For that is what the novel is also about - restoration - not
always in ways that are anticipated or expected but for the main characters this is what is offered and it's up to them how and with whom they find it.
This was a simply wonderful novel that kept me up for a couple of nights, meant I was lousy company during the day, and that I was completely distracted until I reached the end... then, of course, as with any great book, I was bereft I'd finished. I shed a few tears, which is testimony to the way in which I was caught up in the emotional lives of the characters.
This is fabulous escapism, and I cannot recommend it enough. For those who love mystery, romance, history, and the tangled web of relationships, as well as some fantastic story-telling, this is the book for you.

Ο Καταρράκτης των Ρόδων είναι ένα όμορφο (εσωτερικά και εξωτερικά βιβλίο),αρκετά καλογραμμένο και πολύ λεπτομερές σε πολλά σημεία.
Με βάση,κάποια πραγματικά γεγονότα (σύμφωνα με την σημείωση που είχε πίσω στο βιβλίο, η υπόθεση αυτού βασίζεται και σε κάποια πραγματικά γεγονότα που έζησε η γιαγιά της) αλλά και σε συνδυασμό με την καλή και μεγάλη της φαντασία (που όντως είναι αρκετά μεγάλη αφού αυτό φάνηκε και στο βιβλίο της και στο γεγονός ότι είναι πολλών σελίδων) δημιούργησε μια καταπληκτική,ρομαντική,με αρκετές λεπτομέρειες πάνω στο καθετί,γεμάτη σασπένς,μυστήριο και αγωνία ιστορία σε σχέση με πράγματα που συνέβησαν μια φορά και έναν καιρό σε ένα ξενοδοχείο στην Αυστραλία,με πολλά πρόσωπα που το καθένα εμφάνιζε όσο προχωρούσε το story τις δικές του πλευρές του χαρακτήρα του αλλά και με ένα καλό τέλος,πραγματεύτηκε όμως και με κάποια συγκεκριμένα θέματα-ζητήματα. Έχουμε,λοιπόν, μια ιστορία και δυο χρονικές περιόδους. Το 1926 και το 2014.
Τώρα σε σχέση με τους πρωταγωνιστές,ναι μεν, υπάρχουν δυο γυναίκες πρωταγωνίστριες, σύμφωνα με την περίληψη του βιβλίου αλλά-κατ'εμε- στην πραγματικότητα υπάρχει και άλλη μια πρωταγωνίστρια όπου βλέπουμε και τα γεγονότα από την δική της μεριά. Απλώς ανήκει στην χρονική εποχή της πρώτης πρωταγωνίστριας(πρώτη πρωταγωνίστρια είναι η Βάιολετ) και βλέπουμε την ίδια ροή γεγονότων από την δική της μεριά και πως επηρέασαν και την δική της ζωή. Γίνεται δηλαδή εναλλάξ αφήγηση των γεγονότων της χρονικής περιόδου του 1926, μια από την Βάιολετ και μια από την Φλόρα.
Έτσι,λοιπόν,πιστεύω ότι ναι οι πρωταγωνίστριες είναι 3 και είναι οι εξής: Η Βάιολετ Άρμστρονγκ,η Φλόρα Χάινετσερτσς-Μπλακ και η Λόρεν Μπέκ. Οι τρεις κυρίες συνδέονται με 1 μεγάλη τραγωδία(η Λόρεν εκτός του ότι ψάχνει να μάθει για το τι συνέβη το 1926 σε αυτό το ξενοδοχείο αντιμετωπίζει συνάμα και μια άλλη τραγωδία στην οποία και εκεί ψάχνει να βρει απαντήσεις.). Τέλος πάντων, με λίγα λόγια μπορώ να πω τα εξής για την καθεμιά κυρία: η Φλόρα είναι ένα σταθερό και δυνατό άτομο και πολύ πολύ πρακτικό. Σε αντίθεση με την Βάιολετ η οποία είναι τόσο αφελής, αθώα και ονειροπόλα που σε μερικές περιπτώσεις με εκνεύρισε άσχημα. Σε σχέση με την Λόρεν δεν έχω να πω πολλά,είναι ένας δυνατός χαρακτήρας (μοιάζει σε πολλά με την Φλόρα),περιορισμένη στο να κάνει πράγματα που ήθελε για αρκετά χρόνια λόγω ενός συγκεκριμένου γεγονότος και χάρηκα καθώς σιγά σιγά κατάφερε και βγήκε από το καβούκι που την είχαν χώσει και να ζήσει όπως αυτή ήθελε γιατί της άξιζε.
Κλείνοντας, αυτήν την review θα πω τα εξής:
-Ναι,είναι πολύύύ καλό βιβλίο.
-Ναι,πρέπει να το διαβάσετε και σας το συνιστώ αν θέλετε να διαβάσετε κάτι πραγματικά καλό για το καλοκαίρι και όχι μόνο για το καλοκαίρι. Δεν νομίζω ότι με αυτό το βιβλίο θα σπαταλήσετε το χρόνο σας!
-Και ναι αυτό το βιβλίο θέλω να το ξαναδιαβάσω κάποτε.

This was the second book that I have read by Kimberly Freeman. The first one was several years ago when I read Wildflower Hill. I enjoyed it immensely and therefore I was pretty excited to have the opportunity to read another one of her stories.

I was not disappointed. This story delivered exactly what makes me favor this genre.

Normally I always prefer the storyline that takes place in the past. This time around I enjoyed both the present and the past equally. I think it was because there was just enough mystery within both storylines and the parallel similarities between the characters was noticeable. Both Lauren and Violet were extremely naïve with the ways of the world and this impacted both of their stories. Both were away from home for the first time trying to find their way in life. Both wanted the experience of a passionate first love. Both declared love after what felt like thirty seconds.

While Violets story was all about a passionate love affair, I did have a difficult time being swept up or swept away in the story of her and Sam. I think this is because I am analyzing the story as the person I am, logical and knowledgeable, and not from Violet's perspective. She was young, naïve and not very educated in the ways of the world. I do feel that this was the whole point of the story. The fact that she did not recognize or know addiction when she was faced with it set up the framework for what you know could not turn out very well. So while I wasn't to stuck on Sam, I needed to know how this was going to turn out and I was in Violet's corner the whole way.

I was invested in Lauren's love story. While she was thirty years old she read as a girl much younger than that. I feel that this was intentional and was a result of her sheltered life due to her brothers illness and her mothers smothering. Her journey of self discovery was as fascinating as watching the rest of the story unfold.

Yes I felt some aspects were a little unrealistic. Both girls handed over their heart too early, anyone falling for Sam seemed impossible...but it didn't matter. Packaging the whole story together it really worked. The twist and turns were easy to see and guess but that also didn't matter. This was a fascinating story and I really enjoyed it. One of my favorite reads so far this year.

Οταν θελω να ξεφυγω απο
τις σιωπές της καθημερινότητας και τα οποία ρουτινιαρικα προβλήματα διαβάζω Freeman ξέρω οτι θα αποζημιωθω γιατί θα αγγίξει την πένα στο μελανοδοχείο της και θα αρχίσει να αποτυπώνει τοπία, περιγραφές και να ζωντανεύει παλιές ξεχασμένες εποχές στη ψυχη μου, παντα μου αφήνει ψιχουλακια με διδάγματα κάπου στο τέλος και μερικές φορες κρυστάλλινα δάκρυα είναι η ανταμοιβή για όλο αυτό το ταξίδι. Τώρα που εκλεισα και τη τελευταία σελίδα κλείνω τα ματια και φέρνω εικόνες και μυρωδιές ανεξίτηλα χαραγμένες στο υποσυνείδητο μου. Το καλοκαίρι έγινε χειμώνας, με τύλιξε απαλά και μου χάρισε στιγμές αγάπης.. Αγαπη, θα σταθώ σε αυτό το συναίσθημα, γνώρισα πολλές αγάπες στους καταρράκτες των ρόδων. Αγάπη με άρωμα κανέλας, γλυκιά μα και πικρή η αγάπη του έρωτα όχι παντα του απόλυτου αλλά και εκεινου που καταστρεφει, ξεκινά γλυκά και σύνεχιζει με πικρά αλλά παντα τον προτιμάμε για τα δυνατά συναισθήματα που αφήνει πίσω του σαν την κανέλα. Αγάπη με γεύση περγαμόντο, η αγάπη της μάνας που καποτε φτάνει να σε πνιγεί και άλλοτε να την αποζητας όπως η φωτιά τον αέρα που τη δυναμώνει. Αγάπη με άρωμα βανίλια. Αγάπη αδερφικη με έντονο άρωμα που συνοδεύεται απο τα πάντα και συνοδεύει τα πάντα. Διότι αγαπάμε τα αδέρφια μας με ολους τους λάθος και σωστούς τρόπους και ακόμη και αν μας πληγώσουν η μας αποδιωξουν παντα νοερά ερωτευομαστε την ύπαρξη τους Γιατι είμαστε εμείς, είναι ένα δικο μας κομματι δε έχει σημασία το χρωμα αλλά σημασία έχει οτι γενηθηκαμε με αυτό, υποχωρησαμε στην ομορφιά του και υποταχτηκαμε στην αναγκη μας να αποζητουμε ζωή απο την ζωή του.
Και αγάπη με λεμονιου, ξινη και δροσερή αλλα παντα μονόπλευρη ίσως η πιο δύσκολη αλλά παντα η σχεδόν πάντα η νικήτρια της ζωής..
Η συγγραφεας αλυσσοδενει με δεξιοτεχνία το παρον με το παρελθον φτιαχνωντας παραμυθια ζωης. Δρακους που φυσουν φωτια, νεραιδες που πιστευουν σε όνειρα ματωμενα, ξωτικα με φτερα θυσιασμένα στην ελπίδα και αληθιες φτιασιδομενες μέσα σε ενα ψυχρό, αοσμο ψεμα.
Ετσι και εδω μας παρασερνει στην εποχή του 1926 και στο 2014 γνεφει στον αργαλιο της φαντασίας ενα παραθυρο στην αγάπη, στην ελπίδα, στο φοβο και στη ζωή. Καθε θάνατος φερνει ζωη και καθε ζωη θάνατο. Ειτε θανατο ψυχής ειτε θανατο συναισθημάτων ειτε θανατο που σε φερνει στο μηδεν για να ζωγραφισεις το ουρανιο τοξο.

Ατμοσφαιρικό βιβλίο, μου θυμισε εντονα αγκαθα Κρίστι σε καποια σημεια της παλιάς εποχής, με υπνωτισε με τις περιγραφες της, με ταξιδεψε και με διδαξε οτι τα πάντα γίνονται για ενα λόγο, ακομη και αν μας πονα ακομη και αν μας ξεριζωνει την καρδια στο τελος παντα θα ανθισει το χαμόγελο. Και ολοι οι ηρωες του τοτε και του τωρα μέσα απο την απώλεια βρήκαν μια μικρη χρωματιστη κλωστουλα και επλεξαν απο την αρχη το παπλωματακι της ζωης τους.
Το βιβλίο χαρακτηρίζεται απο πολλα συναισθήματα η απώλεια είναι το μεγαλύτερο. Απώλεια ζωης, απωλεια εμπιστοσυνης, απώλεια αγάπης μα και ελευθερία, ναι εκεινη η ελευθερία που σε παρακινει να παρεις την μεγαλύτερη ανασα και να αφουγκραστεις τα καινουργια που σε περιμένουν μα ακομη και αν ξανα πεσεις δε έχεις παρα να κοιταξεις γυρω σου, θα βρεις κατι ελπιδοφόρο για να σκεφτεις οτι ετσι ειναι η ζωη, γεμάτη εκπληξεις, σκαμπανεβασματα, δάκρυα μα εσυ πρεπει να βρεις εκεινο το κρυμενο ηλιο στη ψυχη σου για να φτιαξεις απο την αρχη το δικο σου αληθινό παραμύθι.

With alternating dual narratives set eighty-eight years apart “Evergreen Falls” is set in a majestic and historic old hotel in Australia’s Blue Mountains.

In 1926, the Evergreen Spa Hotel was where Australia’s rich come to stay. Flora and Sam Honeychurch-Black, wealthy brother and sister, have come to the Evergreen Spa Hotel in order that Sam can ‘recover’ from his condition. Sadly, his condition is opium addiction and Flora holds out little hope for a ‘cure’. Along with the siblings are Flora’s fiancé, Tony, and some of his friends. Flora once dreamed of becoming a doctor, but her family’s aspirations for her, a young woman of impeccable breeding, was for a advantageous marriage. Handsome and wealthy, Tony seems to fit the bill.

Violet Armstrong, a naive teenager, has come to work at the hotel to earn money to send back to her mother in Sydney who suffers from severe arthritis. Luckily for Violet, the manageress of the hotel favours her and keeps her on over the winter months. When Violet – a lowly waitress – meets the wealthy hotel guest Sam, it is love at first sight for them both. They begin a secret love affair which has tragic consequences.

Things take a sinister turn when a severe snowstorm cuts the hotel off from the neighbouring village. Tension, frustration and isolation erode the social norms. Most of the hotel guests have left leaving only a handful – with just a skeleton staff to care for their needs. The kenopsia was palpable. Then conditions worsen. Their supplies are cut off, staff fall sick with the flu, there is no electricity, and most importantly, Sam’s supply of opium dries up…

In 2014, after the death of her beloved brother Adam, Lauren Beck comes to Evergreen Falls to work in the hotel’s café. She is away from her home in Tasmania for the first time. Although thirty years of age, Lauren is naive to the ways of the world because she had been sheltered by her family whilst caring for her terminally ill older brother.

The hotel is being renovated and refurbished. Tomas, one of the team of architects from Denmark, comes in to Lauren’s café daily for coffee. For the first time in her life, she knows how it feels to be attracted to a man. After a short acquaintance, Tomas gives Lauren a key to the west wing of the hotel where she discovers some old love letters. Tomas returns to Denmark and she embarks on a quest to discover more about the writer of the letters.

As with most well researched historical novels, I am reminded about the time period. How segregated males and females were – years before any semblance of equality for women, when a double-standard was the norm. How unaccepting society was of homosexuality. The class stratification in the 1920s.

More than a romantic love story, “Evergreen Falls” speaks to the love between siblings, between parent and child, between friends. A historical saga with a smattering of suspense, the story will be enjoyed by many.

Οι «Καταρράκτες των Ρόδων» είναι ένα πολυτελές ξενοδοχείο, που βρίσκεται στα Γαλάζια Όρη της Αυστραλίας και αποτελεί την κοινή αφετηρία δύο ιστοριών, οι οποίες εκτυλίσσονται σε δύο διαφορετικές χρονικές περιόδους.
Η συγγραφέας, εμπνευσμένη από περιστατικά της ζωής της γιαγιάς της, μας παραδίδει ένα μυθιστόρημα μοιρασμένο σε δύο εποχές. Ο αναγνώστης παρακολουθεί τη ζωή της Λόρεν στο παρόν και μετά «βουτάει» στο παρελθόν για να συναντήσει τη Βάιολετ και να δει στις δόξες του το παλιό πια ξενοδοχείο.
Μέσα από την ιστορία της Βάιολετ, η συγγραφέας θα μας παρουσιάσει τις έντονες διαφορές μεταξύ των κοινωνικών τάξεων, περιγράφοντας από τη μία τα πλούσια γεύματα, τις μουσικές βραδιές, τα πολυτελή ενδύματα και τις τρυφηλές συνήθειες και από την άλλη την αδιάκοπη εργασία και τους κινδύνους της, αλλά και την περιστασιακή διασκέδαση υπό τους ήχους ενός γραμμόφωνου. Ακόμα, θα αναφερθεί στη θέση των γυναικών στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα κάνοντας λόγο για την αναντίρρητη υπακοή στις εντολές του πατέρα και αργότερα του συζύγου, για την απουσία ελεύθερης έκφρασης και διατύπωσης απόψεων.

I love a dual time line story and I wasn't disappointed in this one. No spoilers, but there's also a mystery to be followed and solved along the way so that too drew me in in a big way. I even invested in the love lives of Violet and Lauren in each time line as well (that doesn't always happen for me). The big love thing for me here though, was the setting. What's not to love about a secluded mountain spa under refurbishment? The Blue Mountains were so well rendered as a setting, I've added it to my list of places to see one of the times I visit Australia. There was enough hope and tragedy to propel me through this story over a weekend and I would recommend it. I can't say that I was completely surprised in the resolutions to the threads but I was well satisfied and I'm glad that I've read this. Kimberley Freeman is a new to me author but I'll definitely be looking for more of her books in the future.

Ich habe dieses Buch geliebt; es ist so wunderschön geschrieben! Es sind eigentlich zwei Geschichten, denn es gibt zwei Handlungsstränge auf zwei Zeitebenen. Einmal erfahren wir die Geschichte von Lauren in der Gegenwart, und dann gibt es einen Handlungsstrang, der im Jahr 1926 spielt. Beide Handlungsstränge haben mir gleichermaßen gut gefallen. Ich konnte eintauchen in die Geschichten, mitfühlen, war mittendrin.

Kimberley Wilkins hat einen sehr schönen, sehr fesselnden Schreibstil. Die Seiten flogen nur so dahin, und ich mochte das Buch auch gar nicht aus der Hand legen. Viel zu spannend war es, mehr über Lauren und über Violet zu erfahren!

Dabei hat die Autorin es auch wunderbar geschafft, beide Handlungsstränge miteinander zu verweben. Sie gehören zusammen, auch wenn sie auf zwei Zeitebenen spielen.

Die Figuren wirkten auf mich sehr echt, sehr lebendig und ansprechend. Ich konnte mit ihnen fühlen, leiden, lachen, traurig und glücklich sein.

"Das Haus der geheimen Versprechen" ist ein richtiges Wohlfühlbuch; ich hatte wunderbare Lesestunden mit der Lektüre!
