In 1690, the haiku master Basho, and four other poets of his school wrote four long poems that have been beloved by the Japanese people ever since. Originally published in 1691, in an anthology, Sarumino, the poems represent, according to Basho, the high and low of haiku. The four poems are written in a linked verse format, called renga. 48 additional haiku from the anthology have been included in this edition by 16 different Japanese poets.
