The most important show of strength is to embrace one’s true nature.
The death of his ex-wife grants Shaun McKellan custody of his only child, and the chance to know his son after years of separation. Now a full-time father, Shaun thinks his life is finally complete…then he meets the Alpha running the town where his son attends school.
Grant Thornlin has always resisted the temptation of other men. As the Alpha, he must be strong and give his pack the impression he has invincible power. Falling for a blond, blue-eyed artist with a half-shifter son has bad idea written all over it.
How can Shaun show Grant that loving another man doesn’t have to affect his position as Alpha?
Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.
When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.
During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.
Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.
She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..
This one was just okay. Nothing special and a lack of world building made for some stupid parts, like the magic glowing sperm. WTF?!? Moon Goddesses and post-orgasmic glittering derma notwithstanding, this was underwhelming.
With an interesting variation on shifter lore, this is the story of Shaun - a human father who finally gets custody of his half-werewolf son, only to find himself at the center of attention of a most gorgeous male specimen – Grant, the area’s pack alpha who “can’t be gay” because he’d lose it all if he admitted to being interested in Shaun. I fell in love with the characters right from the start, and while I wanted to shake Grant more than once (he needed to wake up to reality big time), Shaun was almost too perfect for his own good. The focus of this story is firmly on both men, Shaun’s son, and a few pack members who begin to play a role in their lives as they struggle through their issues.
Shaun is just such a great guy. He is dedicated to his son, Kyle, and clearly heartbroken that he went away when his mother found her true mate. All the nonsense about Shaun having to stay away so he wouldn’t bond with his son really got in my nerves. But Shaun wanted to do the right thing for his son – and at least the mother wasn’t cruel and kept Shaun in Kyle’s life – always at a distance. Well, all of that is over, and Shaun finally gets to be the hands-on father he’s always wanted to be – with a hormonal teenage half-wolf on his hands. I loved how he handled the problems that came up!
Grant, alpha or not, is an idiot. Sorry, but he’s old enough to know better. On the other hand, being around three hundred also means he comes from a time when being gay wasn’t even accepted by humans, and werewolves (in this world) are even more “traditional” – not to say backward. Nevertheless, he should have moved with the times. Instead, Shaun has to drag him, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. It’s a good thing Grant’s beta has more sense than Grant himself and adds his two cents. Once Grant gets the picture I liked him a lot better.
If you like stories about werewolves who are quite firmly in the closet, if you want to know more about how a human deals with a half-wolf teenage son, and if you’re looking for a read that is funny, touching, and full of sexual tension (not to mention hot action), then you will probably like this novella.
This was a bit of a let down. I was super intrigued at first because the way that shifters are integrated into everyday society is an idea that I like, and I wanted to see more of it. That side of the story was satisfactory, but it was about the only thing that was. Neither MC had much of a personality beyond screwing the other and like one trait, and the development between the two was nonexistent. They have one encounter then there's a time jump and suddenly everything's being wrapped up. What a let down! There was a lot of stuff that didn't quite make sense too. Like what was the point of getting the doctor over when Grant later admits to knowing exactly what was going on? And it didn't seem like he was hiding what he knew, he legit didn't know at the time. That was inconsistent. A lot of characters were introduced and then never seen again, only used as shallow plot devices. And the author really needed to add in more commas, some of those sentences were just plain awkward.

Reunited with his son. Shaun is over the moon. He meets alpha Grant at the shifter school he's trying get his half human half shifter son into. But Shaun is human and Grant isn't sure he can go against his pack.
It was a fun read. Grant took a while to get his act together tho.
I would have liked this book just a bit better if the alpha wouldn't have been so wishy/washy over mating Shaun. Overall, I liked the book and wished it would have been just a smidge longer.
When Shaun McKellan’s ex-wife dies he gets custody of his fifteen year old son Kerry only because he never bonded with his step-father. While it may not seem that important to us, being half shifter makes it incredibly important to Kerry to be bonded to a strong alpha male whilst going through the Changing years. This is when a shifter finds out if they’re going to be lucky enough to shift and then they not only bond with their animal but they have to learn how to control their emotions and hormones. Nobody is sure if Kerry is going to be able to shift as he is a half-blood but Kerry is certain he will as he can feel his animal inside himself.
As there is only the one shifter school in the area Shaun decides that is where Kerry needs to go so he can be around other shifters. Because he was not allowed to have any contact with Kerry after he was born what Shaun knows about shifter politics is what he could find on the internet. When he goes for his meeting with the Alpha the moment he meets Grant Thornlin it’s like a light switch is turned on. Both Grant and his wolf just want to tackle Shaun to the ground and start humping him! Grant can’t work it out, his wolf has never responded to a human before neither male nor female. Grant hasn’t had a male lover but that doesn’t mean he’s never been interested, it just means that he’s more concerned with being the best Alpha he can be because he knows there are people in the pack that will not accept a human especially a male human for their Alphas mate.
Because there is not a lot of funding for the school the policy is that all family’s must chip in and help out within the school and as Shaun is an artist he signs up for art lessons several days a week. Grant convinces Shaun to go to his house the first day of school and they end up having sex but Shaun ends up glowing like a glow stick! Of course Grant freaks out because he’s heard stories about true-mates but he’s never actually met any until now. Besides the fact that Grant has been going out of his way to avoid Shaun everything is going relatively smoothly for both Shaun and Kerry until the day a few homophobic boys decide to gang up on Kerry. Not only does it not work, it brings his wolf forward at school, where it’s expressly forbidden.
With the full moon just around the corner Grant knows his wolf isn’t going to let him get away with avoiding their mate. So at the next pack meeting he announces the fact that Shaun is his True Mate and if anyone doesn’t like it they can leave the pack! There are a few scuffles but nothing major, it isn’t until later when they’re back at Shaun and Kerry’s house that the homophobic football coach decides that he has to get rid of Shaun so that Grant will be the same manly Alpha he was before!
As a paranormal, shifter book The Changing Years has a refreshingly different take on werewolves. I am frequently disappointed by the fact that a lot of authors don’t bother to have their own ideas about shifters, that’s the reason why we as readers like such a diverse range of authors. I will be recommending this book as a new take on werewolves as well as a beautiful m/m romance!! Unfortunately there are always homophobic bigots everywhere you go the only difference in them is their level of intractability.

I get the impression that lately this author’s books are more low-key than they used to be. The focus certainly seems to shift somewhat.
In this case the romance doesn’t feel like the main story – rather it’s about Shaun and how he copes with his changing circumstances. In fact, it doesn’t feel like much of a romance at all. In that regard I guess it’s a good thing that I found myself more interested in his relationship to his son, anyway.
I did not care for Grant. At all. He is such a coward and the reasons he cites are further proof of his weakness. What kind of an alpha is he to endanger the well-being of the pack by allowing them to continue in their presumably intolerant ways towards their own people? The story makes it clear that there are at least some who will be relieved to be allowed same-sex relationships and/or matings. So basically, turning a blind eye to this deeply seated issue in the pack he supposedly sacrifices even a mate for, and doing so out of the fear that he might be deposed, means he is too caught up in self-preservation mode to grasp the larger implications of his situation. And this, by the way, still doesn’t keep him from indulging in the sex part anyhow. So he wants the good stuff, but is not willing to take personal risks to achieve something that in the long turn would benefit the pack and at the same time show respect to the person he is supposed to care for above all. No, it seems safe to say that he was a letdown.
To be honest, I don’t know which rating to pick. Reading this felt nice, if quick, but there isn’t anything substantial lingering, nor was this as funny as the author’s work tended to be.
The more I think about it, the more I come up with things that could have been done a lot better. There were hints of specific were lore in this, but nothing was followed up on. The glowing thing was reduced to a mere blanket statement in the coming-out scene. No proof was brought up or even hinted at. Sure, this may have happened in the background, between what the author told us, but something like this? Seems like it would matter to the wolf society, to the story.
In the end I suppose this one did lack some focus on the plot elements thrown in. Again, the most interesting part to me was Shaun’s adjustment to Kerry – or rather the way the wolves all seemed to recognize Shaun as an alpha. I’d thought for sure something would come of it in the end but that never happened. Nor did Kerry’s throwaway remark about his mother hiding something bear results. I hoped for interesting twists and got… none of it, really. Not that I’d need Shaun to be more than he is; he seems quite powerful in his own way. But from a story perspective things simply felt somewhat loose.
Yeah. I guess I talked myself down half a star. I wonder what counts more: the feelings you have while you read something, or how you feel once it’s over and you look back on it as a whole?
I have not read any books by this author. I found this book to a fun read that I truly enjoyed. The storyline and characters are well developed. This book shows the love between a father and son an the love between two different species. I look forward to reading many more of Ms Kell’s books. Really liked this book. A funny, light-hearted read about a human and shifter 'instant-mating' that somehow didn't feel forced or rushed. Love how the author pointed out a couple of common occurrences in shifter books, some as a joke (like mpreg), which gave me a laugh. The author handled the relationships well, . If I had to be critical I would say that I would have liked the story to be fleshed out a bit more and the ending did seem a little rushed, but apart from that, this was a good read from a good author (I also love her 'Wizard's Touch' series).
First time I’ve read anything written by author Amber Kell, but it will not be the last. The Changing Years is a tantalizing tale about family, love, and commitment. Considering the length of this novella, around 25,500 words, I was amazed that she infused so many complex issues – blended families, bullying, bigotry, and prejudices. The author handled all of these topics with a delicate touch that complimented the story perfectly.

This is a wonderful book in the ARe Collection. This is just a taste of the type of story that Amber Kell can write. I love the world she created. Shaun gave up his son because his ex met her mate. Now that she has passed, he gets him back and will do anything for him. He showed such strength and selflessness. I don't think I could be that brave.
Grant sees Shaun and he knows immediately that he is the mate the Moon Goddess chose for him. Only problem he has is that he is unsure how the pack would react to their Alpha being Gay. Shaun refuses to be a secret. I love how he brings this Alpha to his knees.
Writing was pretty good for Amber Kell - not as choppy. Neat world building of shifters being out in the open with humans. Wonderful relationship of father and son.
No relationship development between MCs even for a fated mate shifter book. The relationship development between father and son was much stronger. No romance. Only one sex scene which was meh. Not enough information on the Alpha's thought process on what finally made him come out of the closet. Too many secondary characters that didn't contribute to the plot. Too short.
Loved this short story. Shaun who is human got custody of his half wolf son Kerry when his ex wife dies. Shaun made a appointment to talk to Grant(alpha of the pack) to get permission for Kerry to go to the wolf school. Shaun got permission. Shaun and Grant went through so ups and downs when Grant finally admits his feelings for Shaun and came out to the pack. I liked this a lot and hope their are more stories to follow this book. Erin
Quick short read. Some interesting shifter lore, but not enough background to fully appreciate the Alpha or pack. Nice plot line with Shaun and his son. Not sure about the drama blip with the coach,? Was it necessary considering the length of the story? Felt a bit "thrown in" and didn't add anything significant. Otherwise, an entertaining bit of fluff and literally some moonlight sparkle! Finishes with an epilogue and a HFN.
I don't even know what to say about this. Amber Kell did a terrible job on this one: inconsistent dialogue, incredibly rushed plot, sorta Gary Stu MC... Luckily, it's a short story, so I got to finish it.
The summary was so interesting, I was really looking forward to reading this, to see how Grant would deal with the pressure of the pack and his desire. However, no real struggle was felt.

Shaun gets custody of his son Kerry who is a half shifter. While trying to do the best for his son, he meets Grant, the local pack Alpha. After first time together, it is found out that they are a moon goddess blessed mating pair. After a bit of confusion and ungrounded fears, they come out as mates to the pack.
