In a brand-new international thriller series for fans of Mark Greaney, Brad Thor, and Vince Flynn, New York Times bestselling author and former U.S. Marshal Marc Cameron brings back his fan-favorite special agent Jericho Quinn for a high stakes race from the mountains of Canada to Tokyo’s backstreets and the waters of the Pacific to stop a rogue Japanese yakuza boss from unleashing a devastating plan rooted in the darkest chapters of America’s nuclear history.

Jericho Quinn’s countersurveillance protect Nora Saito, a Japanese-American tech billionaire whose advancements in AI weaponry makes her a key player in US defense strategies—and a target. Then three potential assassins, their bodies virtual canvases of intricate tattoos, are taken out. Quinn and his team think this is the work of yakuza and that this mission reaches well beyond the mountains of Alberta.

In Tokyo, Ogura Kojiro holds sway as a nationalist Japanese yakuza boss with a break the US stranglehold on Japan and return his nation to its pre-WWII imperial glory. His companion is an enigmatic tattoo artist named Momo said to divine the future in needles and ink. She sees it as Ogura’s extremist goal to rid Japan of American influence forever. The cataclysmic plan has already been set in motion.

In Ogura’s shadow is Quinn, wending his way through the dangerous tattoo parlors and bars of Tokyo’s red-light district in search of answers. But he’s not the only one tracking Ogura. And Oguro isn’t Quinn’s only threat. From Tokyo to Saipan, and across the Pacific, Quinn and his team are up against ruthless new adversaries—and even old friends—to stop a madman before his fanatical dreams become America’s worst nightmare.

Nora Saito, a Japanese-American tech billionaire developing AI weaponry crucial to U.S. national security has her entire security team slaughtered around the perimeter of her home, so a group with a very particular set of skills is assigned to assist in her protection. The team is led by special-agent Jericho Quinn, and in a wickedly well-plotted opening scene, Jericho is bailed out of trouble from his close-knit group of colleagues. We meet these pugilists with heart, learn a bit of their history, and Fail Safe declares loud and clear that it is here to entertain with the action and thrill knobs turned all the way up and broken off.

Jericho's team has been called away from a vacation their boss forced them to take, and gather in an Alberta resort, surrounding Saito as she attempts to broker a half trillion-dollar deal. Scenes alternate from Canada to Tokyo, as we follow a sub-plot of vicious yakuza gangsters connected to characters in close proximity to the VIP billionaire. Crackling with high-tech action and drama, AI powered robots, self-driving cars, and drones with bleeding-edge technological capabilities, assist our cast. Characters can all speak multiple languages and are incredible martial artists, but for the most part they are driven by believable motivations, and their hearts beat with authentic emotion.

The novel moves to Tokyo as the plot grows in complexity. Blazing motorcycle chases down the rainy streets of Tokyo, a 3 on 1 katana fight to the death in an elevator, Fail Safe is 80% Mission Impossible and 20% historical fiction. The famed case of Japanese soldiers hunkered down in the Northern Marianas for years after the end of WWII is relevant, and even a lost nuke enters the plot as a possibility. The story is delivered by an author who clearly knows the subject, and apart from a couple small cheesy scenes and a rushed finale, the novel remains lethally fun for most of the ride.

This is second book I’ve read by Marc Cameron. The other, Backtrack, is more of a western than a high-tech global romp. In both Cameron shows he can channel emotion and believability into adventure. Supposedly, fewer men are reading than ever, but here’s a writer doing his part to fix that. Fail Safe is recommended to anyone looking for well-researched action and fans that miss classic Tom Clancy would especially enjoy.
