From the twisted mind of Bram Stoker Award Finalist Peter N. Dudar comes a ghost story of vengeance, death, and stark terror.
WHAT IF THE PERSON YOU WRONGED IN LIFE WAS WAITING ON THE OTHER SIDE, JUST BEYOND THE COBWEBBED VEIL OF DEATH, TO DRAG YOU TO HELL?
Sadie Mills, the one-time soap opera star of Forbidden Steam, is terminal and waiting to die. Her private life has been haunted by the tragic death of her husband, Andrew, and the subsequent dogging by tabloid reporters over her lascivious past. Her daughter Theresa is now her full-time caregiver and health proxy—a curse of indentured servitude that has driven their damaged relationship to the razor’s edge. Theresa has never forgiven Sadie for driving her father to an early grave, and is praying that her mother’s death will finally undo the web of deceit that Sadie has created. And now, at the hour of her death, Andrew’s angry ghost has returned for Sadie, longing to introduce her soul to unspeakable horrors.

It is difficult to reconcile the lovely person that Peter Dudar is with the stories that come out of his head. He surprises me every time. My mother and I have a contentious relationship and I could fully identify with Theresa who is saddled with caring for her ailing mother whom she despises. The twist to this story is not the scary part, and there are chilling parts, it is the realization that we don't always understand the motivations of the people we love or the people we hate. By the end of the story, I fully understood Sadie and although I might not have supported her actions, I knew where they were coming from. The characters are well developed and the story is compelling. The idea that revenge could go beyond the grave with as little understanding as it had before death is an interesting one and should make us mindful of keeping communications open.
A really great read! A narcissistic former- soap-opera actress spends her final days being plagued by the vengeful ghost of her husband and barley tolerated by the daughter she resented. The story is engaging and the characters feel genuine. I couldn't put it down.
The short story included at the end was a great inclusion as well. A sad, brutal look at a man grieving his lost son and... well spoilers.
