First In Line by indie author Ana D’arcy is a Formula One second chance romance that made my heart physically ache with a nostalgia, melancholy and yearning I didn’t know possible in a standalone sports romance. While I generally have an aversion to this sub-genre — Ana D’arcy, Ali Hazelwood and Allie Oleander are my auto-read contemporary romance authors.

This story is told in dual timelines and from dual POVs, which makes for a beautifully moving juxtaposition. It’s clear our MCs are as close to soulmates as you can find in a contemporary romance that’s rooted in reality and growing pains. Jax & Evie were high school sweethearts, best friends and dream chasers. They married young and despite the hardships — they were all in. Every decision, every action was made and endured with love in their hearts and a deep & unwavering commitment to their shared vision for the future. But when we meet them in the present they’ve been estranged for 7 years.

Jax is the top Formula One race car driver in the world. Evie is a small town architect living a happy & quiet life. But it’s time to confront Jax after leaving all those years ago. She needs the divorce papers signed. And he won’t do it before seeing her again. And definitely not before meeting the fiancé she’s officially leaving him for.

First In Line releases July 31st and at its core is a story of the evolution of love, healing and finding your way back to where you’re meant to be. There’s yearning, banter, young love and big dreams. But there’s also resentment, grief, guilt and heartbreak. When you drift too far, when you stay away too long — can you ever really go back home? Ana reminds readers that: yes — you can.

Home is a heart that’s waiting for you.

Ana D’Arcy, you’ve done it again!!! Seriously one of my favorite authors right now. I’m beyond grateful to have been chosen as an ARC reader!

I’ll be totally honest- when I saw this was a second chance romance about an F1 driver, I was a littleeeee skeptical. I didn’t think it would necessarily be up my alley, but I was completely wrong!!

I was in a reading slump and this book yanked me right out of it. Ana truly has such a beautiful way with words. Passion, yearning, spice, all on point!!

This is a Dual pov that also goes back and forth on timelines- then vs now. Something I’m usually not a fan of but it was really well done here and tied everything together.

This book is full of romance and such true love- the notion that even when you think all has been lost you can find your way back with the right person.

Another phenomenal read, check it out!!

*Thank you Ana D’Arcy for providing me with an ARC of your book, I AM IMMENSELY GRATEFUL AND APPRECIATIVE!

*Check Content Warnings

Ana D’Arcy is back with not only her next newest book, but…A SECOND CHANCE ROMANCE WITH AN F1 DRIVER! OMG! Now, with Ana at the helm of this book, she knew EXACTLY how to write not only a second chance romance, but also including “then” and “now” parts to the story it added, the feelings of first love, yearning, passion, heartbreak, tension, and a lot of Evie and Jax trying to work through all the years of their relationship. Right away when I started reading this book, I felt connected and invested in both Evie and Jax. From wanting to know why Evie wanted a divorce from Jax , to seeing how they once were together as teens, I was locked in this book! Ana never fails to make me obsessed with her stories, and this was another that made me LOVE both Evie and Jax, but more importantly brought a new twist to the second chance romance trope. Plus, IT HAS FORMULA 1 AND I LOVE F1!

Girl, I’m telling you, THIS. BOOK. IS. ADDICTIVE! The way Evie and Jax had me so hooked on their story isn’t funny, I legit mean I was invested in every aspect of their relationship. Even as Evie tried to get Jax to sign the divorce papers, it was clear that there was still love between the two of them. Sure, Evie and Jax had their disagreements that turned into heated arguments, but underneath all that, it was simply just two people who very much still loved one another and weren’t ready to fully sever ties. I could feel Evie’s conflicting emotions when it came to trying to move on in her life from Jax, but also unable to resist the magnetic pull he had with her. Plus, seeing Evie and Jax together, I could automatically clock the simmering tension that emanated between those two. As much as Evie tried to go about divorcing Jax, it wasn’t fully over between them.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the, “then” and “now” parts. Seeing the “then” parts had a lingering sense of innocence, hope, and excitement for Evie and Jax, but as the story progressed it also showed the slow trajectory into their inevitable downfall. When I think of Evie and Jax as adults compared to their younger selves, there were differences in how they approached things, as well as how their relationship had changed from the past and the present. I thought it was a great idea to have parts of this book be told in the past because, it set up the basis of how Evie and Jax’s relationship started, how Jax made his way into Formula 1, but also how as teenagers, they formed a deep and meaningful connection that in my opinion is rare to find especially at a young age. When reading the present timeline, I could see that the years had changed for both Evie and Jax. Evie was afraid to rekindle her relationship with Jax for fear of getting hurt again, and rehashing the same issues they faced previously. For Jax, oh my goodness, to see this literal god of a man break down in anguish over having his heart broken again by the love of his life was heartbreaking to witness, but I also just appreciate seeing a grown, man reveal all his heartache and vulnerability especially in the context of this story.

This story continued to surprise me the more that I read. Not only was this such a beautifully written and loving story, but it also showed the difficulties that Evie and Jax faced in their past and even in the present. With being high school sweethearts, there was an endearing and heartfelt feeling between Jax and Evie that I absolutely adored. When it came to the hardships Evie and Jax faced in their relationship, as Jax was working his way to the top in Formula 1, it showed how the two of them handled things differently and it wasn’t always perfect. The was a raw vulnerability to Evie and Jax’s story that was made more clearer when I got to specific parts in the story. My heart broke for what I found out about Evie and Jax, and I guess I now knew what played into Evie and Jax being apart for those seven years. As much as this story had its lighthearted, fun moments, there was also the deep, and heartbreaking moments in Evie and Jax’s story. Ana D’Arcy wrote this book in a way that blended all the aspects of Evie and Jax from their story as teenagers falling in love to facing the hardships in life as Jax continued to fight for his dream of becoming a Formula 1 driver.

With everything that I read, I was once again impressed with Ana’s talented writing, and her attention to detail, as well as ensuring the care and respect when it came to the more heavier parts in Evie and Jax’s story. As a Formula 1 fan, I was already chomping at the bit to read this book, but the fact that Ana made this an amazing story to read with incorporating a second chance romance, I genuinely LOVED every single second of this story. Just as I’ve always been a big fan of Ana’s writing and her characters, Evie and Jax have easily become characters that I cherish and love so dearly. Having read this book makes me miss Jax and Evie so much, but after they endured so much from loss, heartache, and sadness, they still found their ways back to each other, and got their perfect happy ending.

On a lighter note, I really love this book so much to the point that I was unable to stop reading because, Ana is such an incredible writer and her writing always makes me feel every aspect from the characters, storyline, and more. Jax was truly an incredible and inspiring man who I loved right away, and his ATTENTION TO DETAIL, yeah that IMMEDIATELY made me love him. Evie was such an inspiring character to from her hard work ethic, constant support to Jax, and being such an incredible woman who went through so much, and managed to come back stronger and better by the end of this book. Jax and Evie’s romance was one that was admirable, endearing, and passionate. I cannot stress how much I loved this book so much, but from my really long review, I hope it comes across how much I enjoyed this story. Highly recommend reading this book, and any book by the wonderful, Ana D’Arcy.

Thank you Ana and team for the ARC!

Ugh. This was so breathtakingly beautiful and intense. I shed actual tears and my heart just aches for both the FMC and MMC and what they went through.

Please check content and trigger warnings if you do have any as the book does delve into heavy topics.

First off, I quite enjoyed the F1 of it all. I know next to nothing about that world but I was sat. The way Ana writes is so engaging and visceral, I felt all the heart-pounding moments on the asphalt/road/track??? Regardless, I felt this was a nice introduction to that sports world and all the excitement and glamour that comes with it - as well as the hardships and struggles that athletes and their loved ones likely face.

There were moments where the whole narrative just seemed all-consuming like its spiraling and going around in circles with the same conflicts and arguments in their relationship. However I felt it was quite realistic and reflective of the crux of a second chance romance. IMO, it was done right because though I felt frustrated at times because of their actions, it was all understandable and valid. I could see how they didn't work the first time around but could believe their chemistry and connection would be strong enough to lead to another chance. I understood that they needed their time apart to grow into themselves so that they could be in the best headspace to come back together again. Ana showcases the reality of how love is not as straightforward or black-and-white as one would like - it's messy and challenging but so worth it in the end.

The merging of past and present timelines was done nicely too, as the story was fully fleshed out and kept me engaged to see how things would unravel and explain the current situation they were in. The depiction of their past was so sweet to read about and it was clear their relationship ran much deeper than puppy love. The climax of the story and reveal of why they broke up the first time gutted me - so job well done as an author! It wasn't a surprise per se but I was still glued to my kindle to find out what happens next. The pacing was perfect too.

And of course, the spice was well written and a big part of the characters' relationship so it made sense how often it occurred on-page.

There was also a moment near the beginning of the book where there was somewhat an element of emotional cheating (not between the main characters) that threw me off but I didn't mind the way it was handled thereafter so this didn't play too much of a big role in the grand scheme of things in my experience with the book.

I probably wouldn't re-read this any time soon because it was a more turbulent and emotional read than what I typically go for but I couldn't resist another Ana D'Arcy book. I can see why other readers love this book and would recommend it if you're after an angsty book full of heart and spice and will likely make you have a good cry too.

I would still read whatever Ana D'Arcy writes.

When I first heard about Ana writing an F1 book, I was immediately screaming to have it in my hands. This author writes some of the best spice and tension. I have been obsessed since Up the Ladder, and I couldn’t wait to see that translated into F1. Which you do get, the chemistry is off the charts. The way this man is obsessed got me through my work week. What I didn’t expect was to experience a story full of grief and heartbreak that so descriptively drags you into the dark spiral of trauma. Please read the triggers if you have any because Ana gives you a raw, tragic story intricately woven into a decades-long love story. I think one of the most heartbreaking tropes is right people, wrong time, and this one really sets the bar. It’s a raw portrayal of life after loss. The impossible feat of attempting to continue on after tragedy because there is no moving past it. Ana navigates this in a delicate manner, but she does not shy away from the anger and sadness that overtake us, and how we lash out against those closest to us. Her characters are so real. It feels as though when you read the end, you’ll miss them. Jackson Reyes is everything. With his witty banter, smart mouth, and the ability to remember everything Evie loved even years later. The tension between these two as you read will have you at the edge of your seat as the dual timelines race towards one another. I loved that slowly their voices mature as the book slowly catches up to the present and there is a lot of growth in Evie and Jax. These characters are flawed in a way that made me love them more. From their rather unusual meeting to struggling to accomplish Jackson's dream, their love story is one I won’t forget. Plus, what is it about book boyfriends and nicknames that is just so hot? If you’re ready to be on the edge of your seat, heart pounding, barreling towards the checkered flags, this is the book for you.

What to expect when reading ;

-Second Chance

In his is book you get to follow Evangeline and Jackson! Evie and Jax are two bright eyed kids in love chasing a dream, a dream that comes with a lot of obstacles. Seven years later and they are back in each other’s life. Will a second chance be in their future or will past trauma wounds keep that from happening?

Firstly please read all trigger warnings because while this is a beautiful second chance love story it does contain some topics that may be heavy for some to read.

WOW! I am at a loss for words with how amazing this book was. I have read every book Ana has put out and she keeps blowing my mind with the books she keeps writing. I was already sold on reading this book because I just love her writing style, but then she added formula one into the mix and I Knew I had to read. This made me feel every emotion possible! I got so lost in these characters, it honestly left me speechless. This is a dual timeline and sometimes those can be hard to follow if not done right, it was done perfectly! The balance between plot, spice, racing and the flow and pace it went at was also done perfectly. This is definitely one of my top favorite reads of the year for sure. I am OBSESSED with this book and will be thinking about it for a really long time, there is no doubt about that.

Fav Quote:
•”Marrying you wasn’t a mistake, Evie. And I wont let you pretend it was”
•”I can’t think of anything sadder than finding the love of your life and yet being unable to spend it with them”
•”And all I wanted was to buy you a house”

Make sure you get your copy of the book when it releases 🤍

(3.75 ⭐️ rounded up to 4 ⭐️)

so sooo grateful to have received a digital ARC from the author because i’ve always wanted to read an F1 romance but never really got around to it so this was the perfect opportunity for me to finally do it!

look, everything racing related was so well written that if D’Arcy got any of the mechanics of this motorsport incorrect, i wouldn’t know HAHAHA

i really enjoyed the flashbacks that gave us insight on Jackson and Evangeline’s relationship when it was young and new and how it developed over the years through the highs and lows of achieving his budding career, along with challenges they faced in their personal lives. i would’ve liked to see more of Evie and glimpses into her personal life, interests, school, family. the only thing she seemed passionate about was Jax (which, of course, is part of her internal struggles.)

The chapters leading up to the explanation of Evie disappearing was heart wrenching and my heart hurt for both of them. it was such a relief when they got back together because they really went through some tough shit.

Jackson is so sweet and caring and proves to Evie time and time again that he’s changed and is willing to do whatever it takes to earn her love. i really enjoyed reading how much he adored her during their Then & Now.

now this is obviously just a personal preference but i would’ve enjoyed this book more if it had fewer sex scenes. it felt as though there was one every other chapter which, for me, can get quite boring. i was expecting a bit more of a slower ease into reigniting their relationship but i still enjoyed this book nonetheless.

overall, it was a nice book and i had fun! it was sweet, sad and sexy!

Ana, you have done it again. When she said she was going to write a Formula One love story I knew I would eat it up. I did and left no crumbs.

This story follows two high school sweethearts, how they meet and then flash forward to where they are today. Evangeline, a hardworking student who hopes to become an architect, meets Jackson who dreams of being a formula one driver. Evangeline helps Jackson achieve his dreams while putting hers off to the side. Jackson tries his hardest to do everything he can to give her the life she deserves while also giving his all to racing.

Throughout the story we find out that they got married young but haven’t seen each other in years and Evangeline wants a divorce, but Jackson makes it difficult to do so. He’s a man determined 😉

Ana does a great job alluding to some events that caused them to break up, but as you continue to read, you find out what happens and you become so invested in her characters. I found myself not able to put it down because I needed to know what happened to them in the past and if they finally get their HEA.

There are some triggers so I suggest you read the TWs before you pick this one up, but I will say that Ana did a beautiful job writing about the sensitive topic that was discussed.

Their love story had so many layers and I loved how we were able to read both POVs to help peel back the layers of their relationship.

Thank you so much, Ana. I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to read another one of your amazing books.

I managed by some luck to receive an ARC of this book, and boy let me tell you I FUCKING LOVED THIS BOOK. Thank you thank you thank you Ana! First in Line follows the story of Evie and Jackson, who honestly were giving off such legendary loverrrsss vibes, as they navigated their BC love story to AD their reconnection since years post divorce. I cried, I laughed, and when I finished the Epilogue I simply didn't want it to end.

And because I am a person that believes in yapping and yapping about a book I loved, I will not tone down the spoilers, so pleaseee brace yourselves!!

Some things I lurved...
- THEM MARRYING IN VEGAS in the THEN AND PROCEEDING TO FINALLY BE TOGETHER IN THE NOW IN VEGAS
- That she learned to braid his hair!!! (but then he cut it cause he didn't want anyone touching it... my shayla
- The spark plugs scene 🚘 😉

Some things I did not like as much...
- Nathan: I thought that his character would play sort of a bigger role, following the breaking off of his and Evie's engagement. For a while there I was like yeahhh, no stupid toxic masculinity shit ... and then he threw a wrench in that plan..
- Was convinced a pregnancy would be sprung on me waaaay sooner in the story, with the amount of UNPROTECTED romps they were having. 👀

Anyway, hope u enjoyed my Ted talk. Hope Ana d'Arcy writes more F1 romances, cause I will certainly devour them all. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

We love a determined man. Jackson knew what he wanted and he didn't stop until he got it. I wish we didn't have that typical storyline of a man sleeping with all sorts of women to get over "the one that got away" . He could have dated casually without being a whore.

Evie was a bit of a frustrating character. I felt kinda bad for Nathan with how easily brushed aside he was, but the connection between Jackson and Evie was undeniable.
The Then and Now format was also really well done here.

This next point is a bit of a pet peeve I've gotten with contemporary romances these days. Why does sex have to be the only way to depict the undeniable connection between couples. They reunite and * boom* "Electric" lovemaking that's better than anybody they've ever been with.

A well written reunion kiss gives more belly flutters than the straight up pornographic sex scenes we get these days. It almost seems like there's no buildup of the tension before they're jumping into bed together.

I had to skip so many of the scenes in this cos they weren't moving the story forward in any way. It's like after the 3rd or 4th time, we get it! They love to have sex. We don't need it to be described in detail every.single.time.

Even epilogues that are meant to show a cute insight into the couples' future are just sex scenes these days. It's just gratuitous ATP. Show us the ROMANCE not just sexy times.

The way my heart broke for them and what they experienced. From young to love, marriage, loss, grief, and finding their way back to each other, was beautiful. The way she was so down for him and making his dreams come true and learning to braid his hair was so sweet. Him cutting his hair off when she wasn’t around to do it anymore and he didn’t want anyone else to do it was adorable. I love that we got the dual timeline and got a glimpse in to where their relationship started and how it got to where it was. When she popped up on him wanting to get those divorce papers signed and he demanded to meet the guy, I was like oh shit here we go lol. I was glad that he didn’t give in right away and he kept trying to show her what they had could still be there. When the part came about the baby, omg I was so sad for them. Having to go through something so hard and dealing with the emotional trauma definitely can put a strain on a relationship. I’m so glad she realized Nate was not it for her.

A Formula One Second Chance Romance

And what a Second Chance this is! I am an absolute sucker for an Ana book so put the 2 together and I am a goner!

The dynamic between both Jackson and Evangeline was incredible and explosive in the best way, it was as if I could see what was happening right in front of my own eyes, I love that we saw there journey from both 2 different points in time and you can see the overall growth as individuals as well as a couple.

If you want to read something that will equally bring you to your knees and make you sob, and not in a cute way, this is the one for you!
In fact I don't think I have read a book by Ana and not cried, in a good way obviously.

I would highly recommend this book as well as any of the other books by Ana, she really knows how to drain you emotionally! For Fans of Second Chances, Dual Timelines, Formula One Driver, Rags to Riches, Healing Journey and some very extra delicious Spicy Goodness.

The angst, the pain the HURT but MOST of all the LOVE Evie (Evangeline) and Jax (Jackson) have for each other. This book screams "its always been you" and MY GOD. I LOVED and ADORED the concept of followinf both stories - how they met and fell in love and how they met again and fell in love again - in one chapter. THE ANGST AND THE PAIN towards the end of the book left me SO heartbroken and SO emotional i cant explain it. This book felt real and i loved it so much. Im honestly so speechless about this book it was that good! I really need to have a few days to just move on from this book. I just enjoyed myself SO much and I ADORE F1 and I ATE this book up in a day because of it. But the HIGHLIGHT was Evie's and Jax's story BY FAR. Im afraid ill never forget them. And i dont ever want to!🥹💛

I was SAT, EvieJax are the BEST! Absolutely devoured this book!!!

First in Line is a story about a man who dreams hard and loves harder and a woman who does everything in her power to make his dreams come true. They have the sweetest connection and the most insane chemistry. Their love story touches your heart and squeezes it so right, the best kind of pain really. It hooks you in immediately and makes you feel like you are experiencing their life with them, I think that's the most beautiful thing about it. There's a comfort in knowing that when it comes to true love, second chances are so so real and EvieJackson are the perfect example of it. This book is a MUST read, dare I say, some of Ana's best work.

“I knew he’d brake, he has a wife and two kids at home”-Fernando Alonso
He’d be saying this about Jackson that’s for damn sure.

Evie was really horrible to her fiance and was soooo close to cheating that it gave me the ick. Not technically che but very close and I would consider it emotional cheating.
I didn’t like all the bringing up the fiance during sex either. There was too much spice for me(which maybe that’s your thing but it took away from the book instead of adding to it). Where was the romance? The wooing? Instead it was blowjobs almost literally every chapter.
Speaking of talking about ex’s during sex: I also didn’t like how he didn’t wait for her and it was (like the above) brought up way to much during intimacy.

ARC REVIEW, NO SPOILERS: To say that I “enjoyed” this book would be doing it a gross disservice. Ana created a beautifully woven story that follows two characters who have dealt with every facet of what it means to be in love. The juxtaposition of each chapter having ‘Then’ and ‘Now’ was flawless, and gave the story so much depth and heart. There is heavier subject matter, so read the trigger warnings if you tend to avoid certain topics. But in summation, I cannot recommend this book (and anything Ana writes) enough. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Like any Ana D'Arcy book, I loved this one. Seeing the relationship between Evie and Jax start to blossom back then, and seeing them come back together now with acknowledging their past was beautifully written. The characters are flawed, and something you might be yelling at your book for certain actions, but that is them being human. The chemistry between Evie and Jax was undeniable, and the heartbreak was as well. Seeing them overcome their differrences and choosing to fight for their love for each other, was worth it.

4/5 ⭐️ ARC

Jax and Evangeline went through so much together across so many aspects and times of their life, seeing them face it together and so strongly was lovely.

A refreshing take on a F1 story, so many books gave them come up traditionally, I like the change of perspective and how Jax came to be in the field and how Evie was there for most of the steps along the way. How dedicated they both were to make his dream come true was amazing and seeing how determined Jax was to prove they could do it was very very well done.

Loved it.

A solid 4.5 read. Formula 1 is near and dear to me so normally I stay away from anything related. However, I adore Ana D'Arcy's writing. I found the story to be realistic enough within the F1 world. Jax and Evie's story of rekindling their marriage was so touching. I really felt for Evie when you realized what all she went through and seeing Jax realize his past mistakes make this a great read. You see both characters grow throughout the book.

Evie and Jax put me through all the emotions. I loved the dual timeline, reading about their relationship growing and them now in each chapter. Evie supported Jax and his dream and helped him make it come true. Jax was loving and supportive and did all he could to prove that their years apart didn't change anything.

3,5 ⭐️ arc reader here!

dnf @ 24%. Slog. Gave me a headache. Wanted to line all the characters up and punch them all in the face. Also the writing was horrid; felt like I was reading 2013 wattpad fanfic written by an author whose day job was middle school. 0/10 would not recommend.

Ana D'Arcy continues to woo, entertain, and tug the heart strings! First in Line is a tender, heartfelt, sexy, and at times heartbreaking story between two soulmates whose love took a break due to the unimaginable. Watching their story unfold from high school to adult years, from estrangement to finding their way back to each other, was everything. And of course, Ana delivered on the spice! Romance lovers need to add the book and author to their TBR!
