A group of teenagers take a boat to an abandoned Scottish island. The guy who planned the trip is a keen bird-watcher, and Inch Crag is a sanctuary for wildlife. It's also a place of superstition and death, as the big kilt-wearing Scot who takes them there informs them. No one has lived on the island for years, and anyone who's tried to visit never comes back to tell the tale. The island seems to have a mind of its own. Despite all this, the big cliched Scottish lad takes them over, and one by one, they meet their fate.

Hamlyn didn't beat around the bush when it came to categorizing their books back in the day. No "Horror" or "Occult Fiction" with this one -- they just straight-up label it "Nasty" on the back. So you know what you're getting yourself into here. It's one of the better British nasties I've read in recent years (though I'm certainly no expert on them), but the gross-factor and depravity isn't quite on the level of, say, early James Herbert. The action and pacing definitely is, however.

Five 20-something friends end up getting stranded on a remote Scottish island with an unsavory history: centuries-old legends of black magic and cannibalism have kept people away from the island for years, even though it's long been deserted. The few who have visited in more recent times were never heard from again. But a group of immature Brits decide to ferry their way to the "cursed" island anyway, as one of them is super-into birds (which the island supposedly has many varieties of) and just digs exploring in general.

So he drags his two buddies and their girlfriends along despite the ominous warnings from nearly everyone familiar with the horrifying myths. They tell the ferryman to be back in a week, but they should have said "be back in 20 minutes," as the shit hits the fan pretty much immediately. I won't spoil anything other than to say that the local wildlife doesn't want them there, and they're primed and ready to wreck their day, one by one.

Characterization is kept to a minimum. You have your jock-type, the smart guy, the tough girl, the meek girl, and the wimp. That's all there is to their personalities but, like a good-bad B movie, it's the kills that count, and they're mostly entertaining, and relatively gruesome (for the era, at least). There's no real fat here, as Hamlyn liked their books short and sweet, and that's one advantage this has over something similar like, say, The Nest which, while slightly more eloquently-written, was waaay too long for a campy creature feature, fun as it was.

Any fan of 70s/early 80s nasties could certainly do worse than The Sanctuary. It's pretty typical in a lot of ways, but the constant tension and fast pace raise it above others in the sub-genre. I wouldn't pay anything ridiculous for it, but if you come across it cheap like I did, it may be worth a gander.

3.5 Stars (I rounded up due to this being a well-above average Hamlyn title compared to the likes of John Halkin and Mark Ronson, neither of whom I've ever made it very far with when attempting their novels. Though Nick Sharman and Guy N. Smith can occasionally be decent over-the-top fun when in the proper mindset).*

*I admittedly haven't yet gotten to any Richard Lewis, who many U.K. horror aficionados on the Vault of Evil boards claim to be one of the most reliable of the staple Hamlyn horror authors. Maybe I'll dig up Spiders the next time I'm in the mood for a nasty, which isn't very often due to their (nearly unavoidable) formulaic nature.

Ένα από τα πολύ καλά και τίμια βιβλία της σειράς "Βιβλιοθήκη του Τρόμου" των εκδόσεων Σίμωσι. Τώρα πώς ακριβώς ο Γκλεν Τσάντλερ -που είναι κανονικά ο συγγραφέας του βιβλίου- έγινε Ντέιβιντ Λιν, μόνο οι υπεύθυνοι της έκδοσης το ξέρουν. Όσο για τον ελληνικό τίτλο, είναι απόλυτα ταιριαστός με το περιεχόμενο, αλλά και με την όλη καλτίλα που χαρακτηρίζει αυτού του είδους τα βιβλία τρόμου της δεκαετίας του '80, οπότε δεν πειράζει που είναι κάπως άσχετος με τον αγγλικό τίτλο. Τώρα, η πλοκή είναι κάτι που έχουμε δει και ξαναδεί σε βιβλία και ταινίες, με ή χωρίς παραλλαγές, όμως ο συγγραφέας προσφέρει απλόχερα δράση, αγωνία και ένταση, καθώς επίσης και gore σκηνές στα κατάλληλα σημεία. Η γραφή είναι πολύ καλή για το είδος, συμπαγής και σίγουρη, με δυνατές περιγραφές και φυσιολογικούς διαλόγους. Οι χαρακτήρες έχουν τα αναπόφευκτα κλισέ, όμως οι αντιδράσεις τους πείθουν και τελικά σε κάνουν να τους λυπηθείς γι'αυτά που τραβάνε. Το όλο σκηνικό του απομονωμένου νησιού είναι πολύ καλά και πειστικά δοσμένο, ενώ η κλειστοφοβική και σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα είναι ικανή από μόνη της να κρατήσει το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνώστη από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Φυσικά υπάρχουν αδυναμίες στην πλοκή και τους χαρακτήρες, όμως δεν το συζητάω, για τη σχολή και το είδος του είναι ένα πολύ καλό δείγμα, που αξίζει να διαβάσει κάποιος ψαγμένος τρομολάγνος. (7.5/10)

Το βιβλίο ήταν αγνώστου τίτλου και παντελώς άσημου συγγραφέα και το πήρα με την ελπίδα ότι ήταν βιβλίο-μαιμου γραμμένο από Έλληνα.

Το διάβασα, ήταν πιο Βρετανικό και από τους Μπίτλς και άφησα την κριτική μέχρι να μάθω ποιος τελικά είναι αυτός ο Ντέιβιντ Λιν που το έγραψε. Τελικά πρόκειται για το the Sanctuary του Σκωτσέζου Glenn Chandler, κάνοντας κάθε άλλη απίθανη μετάφραση τίτλου-ονόματος συγγραφέα στα Ελληνικά να φαντάζει λογική.

Αλλά πέρα από τους γύφτικους προλόγους, το βιβλίο είναι ένα κρυφό διαμάντι. Παρέα από νεαρούς πάει σε βραχονησίδα των Εβριδών επειδή ο ένας από αυτούς θέλει να παρατηρήσει τα τοπικά πουλιά. Ανάμεσά τους βέβαια βρίσκεται και ένα ζευγάρι από τερατώδεις αετούς που διψάνε για αίμα. Χωρίς να είναι συγκλονιστικό βιβλίο καταφέρνει να έχει πολύ συμπαγές γράψιμο, αντιδράσεις χαρακτήρων που πείθουν, αρκετή ένταση, gore στα σωστά σημεία και μία κλειστοφοβική ατμόσφαιρα που σε κρατάει στο βιβλίο μέχρι τέλους.

Έχει τις αδυναμίες του, αλλά μιλάμε για παραδοσιακό Βρετανικό nasty οπότε ξεχωρίζει άνετα από τον σωρό των κακογραμμένων βιβλίων της εποχής εκείνης

Have read a Greek translation of it, and it was quite a treat of a nasty. There was tense prose, the characters acted quite realistically and the gore was imaginative and came at the right time (but was not that graphic).

Well… This was something. I don’t really know what to say. The cover is just amazing! But aside from the cover, I just couldn’t really get into this one at all.

The Sanctuary is a very slow burn. Normally slow isn’t that bad, but all the characters here are soooo unlikable! The crazy killer birds take way too long to get the characters. The pay off was unsatisfactory!

I thought there was going to be way more crazy bird action. But there wasn’t. The lack of action and the unlikable characters just made this one so hard to read. It was difficult to motivate myself to keep picking up this book to read. And it was such a short book! I was so bummed.

I didn’t finish this one. I tried. I really wanted to like this one but I just didn’t. :/ I made it more then half way but…. MEH. I might try picking this one up again sometime later…. but, I don’t know. Cover is nice though.

Πολύ ωραίο βιβλίο.Συγκριτικά με όσα έχω διαβάσει απο τη βιβλιοθήκη του τρόμου, αυτό ήταν το καλύτερο.Μου άρεσαν οι περιγραφές των τοπίων και το γεγονός πως το μεταφυσικό στοιχείο της ιστορίας παρουσιάζεται με κάπως πιο συμμαζεμένο τρόπο και όχι τόσο γελοία σουρεαλιστικά.(Σε αντίθεση με άλλα βιβλία της σειράς).Πράγματι είχε κάποιες αδυναμίες, αλλά τελικά το αμείωτο σασπένς του υπερισχύει !

περιπετειώδες και όντως νιώθεις τρόμο
η απομόνωση και το νησί, υπέροχα δοσμένα, μου θύμισαν το shadow island (alone in the dark 4) και αυτό είναι μόνο θετικό
