Can a girl enamored with the adventurous seas ever be content with the tame life of a Southern belle?
When her mother dies, Elizabeth Benjamin heads home to Key West, determined to transform herself into the perfect Southern belle her parents always wished her to be. But nothing goes according to plan. Her brother resents her, the servants do not obey her, and Rourke O'Malley, the dashing man she vowed to forget, refuses to relinquish his hold on her heart. Worst of all, it becomes painfully obvious that her father is not the man he appears to be.
As family secrets come to light, Elizabeth is faced with a difficult choice: to perform her duty and abandon her dreams, or to leave her life of privilege behind to chase the man her father sees as little better than a pirate.

I’m always a little nervous to read a book by an author I’ve never read by before, but I could have saved my fretting when it came to Love’s Rescue by Christine Johnson. This book was perfectly lovely! ^_^
... And yet deep. Poignant. Heart-wrenching, but soul-touching. It was such a beautiful tale with not only a meaningful and “true love” sort of romance, but also a noticeable theme of faith. All my fears were for naught! *grins* I have another wonderful book to add to my bookshelf, and am able to write a positive review for an author! *smiles*
There is a lot going on in Love’s Rescue. A young woman is battling with guilt, a forbidden romance, and her father over an impending marriage she doesn’t want. A godly and brave captain has waited for his love for four years, but is suddenly thrust into circumstances that can only pull them further apart. A slave woman needs to be spirited away in the night in order to be reunited with her husband. Things are stolen. Innocents are accused. Dirty secrets found out. Bitterness and anger escalate. Yet guilt molders continually.
The mystery and suspense/danger of this story had me always guessing or on edge. While the romance tugged at my heart and made me wonder and hurt with Elizabeth. Some characters endeared themselves to me. Others I could hardly stand. I had to do some forgiving, along with Elizabeth ... *wink* Rourke was a great guy! His respect for women and his open protecting of their heart and purity ... I was extremely impressed. You godly man of wonderful character!! No wonder Elizabeth fell for you! *grins* He still struggled, yet leaned on God’s strength to do the right thing. Annabelle, dear Annabelle! I quite loved her, even though she didn’t have a huge amount of “screen time” in the story.
I don’t really know how to explain why I loved this book. It was another one of those historical romance, high seas, exotic islands, forbidden love kind of tales. And yet it had a moving faith theme. Real love. Sacrifice. Forgiveness. I suppose I just felt it was deeper than a lot of the Christian romance norm. It tugged my heart strings, I tell you! I’m truly touched! ^_^ The mystery/suspense of it also made it particularly intriguing.
But yes. It was simply a beautiful, and even unique, tale. I loved it! So excited to read more from Christine Johnson!
I received a copy of Love's Rescue from Revell Publishers in exchange for my honest review.
What a delightful story! This book pretty much has it all – danger, a manipulating family, a forbidden romance, intrigue, secrets, and more. Love’s Rescue is full of complex characters and difficult situations.
I really connected with Elizabeth and Rourke, wanting their love to be possible, even though the odds seemed against them. They were both very likeable characters. Elizabeth had some growing up to do and she had to learn to stand her ground against overbearing family members. But I felt that she did grow quite a bit and learned a lot by the book’s end.
Rourke was a classic hero. Judged harshly by many for his occupation, he was a man with a high moral code. His attempts to do his job honorably were refreshing. And the way he treated his best friend, a freed slave, as an equal was rare for the time. I found his character refreshing and the sacrifices he had to make at times just made him all the more interesting.
I enjoyed this book from start to finish and definitely recommend it to fans of historical fiction. It is set in the very unique location of Key West and I really enjoyed learning more about this area.
My thanks to the author for the complimentary copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this story! The book itself is beautiful (usually Bethany House is my favorite designer of gorgeous books, but Revell did an outstanding job with designing this one...it's much prettier in hard copy). I am guilty of buying this book because the cover was so pretty, which does not happen to me often.
Once I got past the front cover, there's a wonderful story inside. Elizabeth returns home after her mother's death to a home life that could easily tip over into her misery, since her family is very much set on her marrying well. Her aunt begins causing trouble between her and her slaves, who have until now been her friends; her father is nearly at the end of his resources after trying to give everything to have her brother walk again. Her brother is sharp and suspicious of her after her four years away.
Another thing I loved was the absence of uncomfortable sensuality. Kudos to the author for portraying a couple whose attraction to each other is based also on their excellent opinion of each other's moral character!! The hero is a "real man" and exactly what this spunky heroine deserves!
This book may look pretty on the outside, but hold onto your seat! You won't have a minute to breath from the first page to the last!! Elizabeth is heading back home to Key West and is ready to face life as it is now. Her mother just died, her father expects her to marry a man she can't stand to be around, and her brother is crippled because of a whim she had that put them in danger. All this while she holds onto her love for Rourke, a Godly and gentlemanly captain that she has loved for years.
The characters are wonderfully written. (Warning: You will fall madly in love with Rourke!) God and spiritual matters are throughout the book. It is also very rich in history. There are many life changing decisions that are tackled while leading you to the perfectly wrapped-up ending. For those that love a fairy tale ending, you will love it! Some may find it a bit too tidy. Either way, it's a great story with a lot to offer.
Thank you, Revell, for this great book! As always, this is my honest opinion. Here's to many more!!
Heroine Elizabeth is a likable character. She is fallible yet redeems herself.
Overall, the story was a good one. The flow seemed a bit off to me though. At times, I was completely engaged and others not as much. Some parts of the story seemed a bit unrealistic.
After twisting the truth a bit to get what she wanted/needed Elizabeth Benjamin probably shouldn't have expected a happy welcome from her semi-cold father. But Elizabeth will do what Elizabeth wants and now she is stuck in a most difficult situation. As she is forced further into a future marriage to a dull and obnoxious man Elizabeth gets more than she bargained for. Torn between duty and love, while trying to turn up the truth behind a mystery that her to-be fiancee is some how tied in to, Elizabeth discovers a muddled up mess that could ultimately be her path to freedom or her emotional demise.
What can I say? There were ships. There were sailors. There was a shipwreck. There was an ocean. AND there was mystery. It. Was. Awesome. I have never heard of Christine Johnson but upon sighting the blurb and the cover I feel hook, line and sinker. Anymore I try to stick to authors whose writing styles I am familiar with but somehow my finger found its way wandering towards this book - the pull invisible, paramount; the finger weak, submissive. And then somehow Love's Rescue, despite the cliche title, ended up on the Nook. And before long it was 1 a.m. in the morning and Love's Rescue was completed in a whirlwind leaving me...supremely satisfied. This was a great title and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series when it is released. I'm already hypothesizing what any characters met in LR will be featured in future books or if it will be new members. Whoever they are I hope they are somehow involved with the shipping trade.

When Elizabeth Benjamin learns of her mother's death, she sets sail at once for her home on Key West. There she hopes to make things right with the brother she hurt four years prior. Her journey home isn't easy. First her ship wrecks and she is rescued by Rourke O'Malley, the man she has loved for years. Then her father wants to marry her off. And her brother won't have anything to do with her. Just when Elizabeth feels completely alone, she discovers her mother's diary. As long held secrets come to light, Elizabeth realizes that her only options are to deny her father and follow her heart or to be forced into a marriage with a man who is not the upstanding man her father believes. Will she do her duty or follow her heart?
The cover on this book drew me in immediately. I also loved the secondary plot involving Elizabeth's slave girl and Rourke's first mate.
I thought that Elizabeth really was rather spoiled. She didn't appeal to me at all, at first. Rourke, on the other hand, I loved immediately! I kept picturing the swashbuckling hero of Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean but with Orlando Bloom's looks. I love the layers to Rourke. Where he was deep, Elizabeth seemed rather superficial.
Still, the book was good. It was a quick read, once I got into it. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.
Fans of Christine Johnson's Love Inspired Historicals will enjoy this as will most historical fiction fans.
I received this book for free from Revell for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow, this was a really fascinating read! I liked the portrayal of the characters; Rouke was dashing, kind, honest and loyal-Elizabeth was a little frustrating, as I chaffed inside at how under her aunts domineering thumb she was-but I felt her character truly changed and strengthened. Charlie.. my goodness, I loved Charlie! He was such a lovable brother. There should have been more of him!:) Annabelle.. I must say, I felt like she was a little selfish. Yes, Elizabeth should have had more guts to stand up to her aunt, but Annabelle didn't seem to worry about anyone at all but herself. Maintained silence on her secret, until it served to help her.Elizabeth was selfish too however, so I guess it evened out.:) John was so sensible a friend to Rouke, and Tom-I liked Tom too. I even got to liking the aunt at the end a little, but the dad scared me through the book, and I still didn't quite warm up to him at the conclusion, though I felt a little sorry for him. There was so much suspense and tension, and I could hardly set it down for long! Thank you for the recommendation Hannah!:)
First, I want to thank the author for the complimentary copy of this book!
This is a great historical book. It is set in the beautiful Florida Keys in the 1850s. I love the characters and the beautiful love story between Elizabeth and Rourke. Throughout the book I could very easily relate to these wonderful character and kept wondering what I'd do if I'd be in their situation. This book also deals with some difficult issues and keeps you wondering if the characters will get their happy ending until the very end.
I am so glad it's the first book in a series and can't wait to pick up the next one. Great job with this book Christine! This might have been the first book I read from this author, but it will certainly not be the last :)
This was my first time reading Christine Johnson and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't really explain it but I felt the romance was some-what secondary to the story line and I so appreciated that. It's not fluffy or to syrupy just a nice blend of historical attributes and crashing waves off the keys. Anabelle was a interesting side character and I never would have guessed her importance!! There is a slight mystery and a irritating aunt you will bid good ridance to at the end. I will certainly pick up number two in the series!!!!!
I really enjoyed this book. This was my first book by Christine Johnson, but I'm sure I will be reading more by her. I LOVED the setting! I looked forward to opening Love's Rescue and traveling to the Florida Keys. I've never actually been there, but it sounded so beautiful. I thought the spiritual thread was well done and the message of dealing with guilt and receiving forgiveness really touched my heart. I liked the characters. I would have liked a bit more development with them and I wanted to see more of Elizabeth's brother Charlie and their interaction. I will admit that for much of the book I couldn't see those great qualities Rourke claimed Elizabeth had. I thought she was selfish and whiny. I do think she grew quite a bit by the end. My only other complaint is that the story seemed to drag in some places. Those things aside, I really enjoyed Love's Rescue and look forward to continuing the series!
Yes, if you like historical romance then I would definitely recommend it. Christine Johnson takes the reader to Key West, Florida during the mid 1800's and give them a glimpse of the unrest in the area experienced while trying to rebuild after a hurricane struck 4 years earlier.
We are introduced to Elizabeth Benjamin and Rourke O'Malley.
4 years ago Elizabeth made a rash decision that could have cost her not only her life, but also that of her brother, Charlie, if not for Rourke's timely intervention. Just days later she was sent to Charleston to find a proper husband at her parents' request. Elizabeth's heart has always belonged to one man and she has not meet anyone who can replace him or his memory. Upon hearing of her mother's death she returns to the Keys and vows to follow her father's wishes. She hopes to make up for all the pain she caused years ago.
I was drawn to Elizabeth's character immediately. She is a lovely, young woman who wants to make amends for the pain she has caused, but she also is trying to figure out exactly where she fits in at home. Unfortunately while grieving the loss of her mother she is put in an unwanted position by her father. She has always wanted her father's approval, but is she willing to sacrifice her life to fulfill his wishes. Suddenly family secrets are revealed and Elizabeth realizes she must make a decision, but what will she choose? This is a story about forgiveness and hope. I really liked this story a lot. I was cheering for Elizabeth and Rourke through the entire story.
This is the first story I've ready by the author, but it definitely won't be the last.
I received this book from Revell for a honest review without bias or outside influence. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Too contrived. Why would you verbally give a message to someone to verbally convey to someone else who must then verbally convey it to a final party when in reality the person you want to receive the message (and it must be received exactly) is the third person in your little game of "Telephone?" And when the obvious problem with this scenario occurs, how then does it work out alright in the end, with almost everyone showing up where they need to be when they need to be there?
The sense of urgency associated with most situations made little sense. I still don't know why everything had to come together in a matter of one or two weeks.
Almost every situation could have been resolved if the protagonist, her family members, and her love interest just would have communicated better.
Finally, the protagonist is not someone I could really root for. By and large she appeared to be self-centered at the beginning of the book and experienced little personal growth by the end. The person who experienced the most growth (her father) did so in a nearly inexplicable fashion. Outside of fiction, I don't believe
Overall, a disappointing read. I only recommend it to fans of historical Christian fiction set in the antebellum South who can accept fictional contrivance with more grace than I am apparently able.
WHAT AN AMAZING BOOK! This is one of the best adventures I've read in a long time and it has made it to My Favorite Books List! This is the first book I've read from Christine and I can't wait for more. From the beginning I didn't want to put the book down, and I devoured chapter after chapter! The characters immediately touched my heart and the twists and surprises in the story kept jumping out as the story unraveled! I could read this book again and again! I've always loved a good book centered around the sea and this one is no exception! The strong characters that must overcome true human faults really adds to the story and the redemption that comes out in the end is simply beautiful! Once again the message that forgiveness is a conscious effort is expressed exquisitely! Christine's descriptions are fabulous, making you feel like you're right there with the characters! I could read this book even with the tv on in the background! LOL! Usually the tv can prove to be a distraction, but I would get so absorbed in this story that the distractions just melted away! :) Filled with love, hope, heartache, anger, manipulation, danger, adventure, Forgiveness, Redemption, Grace, healing, twists, humor, and justice! I highly recommend this fabulous book to everyone!

New Series Keys of Promise, Book #1"Love's Rescue" by Christine Johnson
This author really pulls at the heart strings as we read the pages of this story. Elizabeth Benjamin is a wonderful character with desires that she is not sure will come true. Time is slipping away and she wonders if her time has already came and gone. Secrets abound in the family that she never knew and she is half afraid to find out...Her mother left a diary and reading the pages leaks things she never knew. Elizabeth feels guilty about her brother's accident at the time of a storm and it eats at her soul. Rourke is a "wrecker," he has a ship and when another runs aground or flounders he comes to the rescue for a price. He has loved Elizabeth since she was a young girl and now that she is grown he is wanting to court her if only he can get her father to agree. Father has arranged for Elizabeth to marry and she is fighting it every step of the way-hoping beyond hope that she can marry the man of her dreams. Key West is a special place in the 1800's , this story has an aunt who is overbearing, Father is an attorney busy in his dealings, Elizabeth has a maid that has been with her for years about the same age as she and they do many things together...more friends then maid and mistress. Reading this story will bring a tug at your heart for Elizabeth and Rourke. Thanks Christine for hours of enjoyment and an ending that made me smile with contentment.
This book wove betrayal, secrets, romance, and faith into a beautiful story. I loved many aspects of this story, but most importantly, I loved the writing style Johnson used. Her writing was simple and understandable, yet poignant and beautiful.
I empathized with Elizabeth as far as not knowing which way to go, but knowing what your heart wants. I’m going through that now, and that aspect of the story really hit home with me.
The mystery kept me guessing at some points, and I really enjoyed that. By the halfway point, I had no idea which way the story was going to go because there were so many routes the author could have taken. I love it when a story has the ability to do that!
The characters were well-developed and felt so real that I was actually furious at them, loved them, and agonized with them!
From the first page, I was pulled in. It has such an interesting and gripping storyline that its hard to stay away. Needless to say, I highly recommend it! I gave Love’s Rescue by Christine Johnson 4/5 stars!
It has been a really long time since I've read a Christian romance that had such a breath-taking beginning. The 19th century seas are certainly the perfect place to start a novel if you want to capture this reader's attention and Ms. Johnson did! While this story as a romance fizzled, as a historical fiction, I enjoyed it. The chemistry between Rourke and Elizabeth was sadly lacking. Maybe it was just the author's style of aiming for a sweet romance that didn't really connect with me as a reader. I've been reading Christian romances for almost 20 years, and this had the feel of a Janette Oke story more so than those from current popular writers. This isn't a bad thing, as I loved those books growing up, but I think Love's Rescue might be better suited for a younger reader or just someone who likes a sweeter story.
~ My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars ~

LOVE'S RESCUE is Ms. Johnson's first book in her Keys of Promise series. At first I wasn't real sure what to think of it, as Elizabeth is a lady of means and being paraded among eligible bachelors to find an approved husband. Translation, a man of means who she doesn't love.
When Elizabeth's father's clerk pays attention to her, her father is thrilled. After all this man owns a plantation even though he works as a clerk. Fantastic. Except Elizabeth loves another. A man who owns a wrecker business and is, according to her father, little more than a pirate.
Secrets come to light and Elizabeth is torn between waiting for the man she loves or marrying to please her father... for reasons I won't share, but it is compelling. I wondered how on earth Elizabeth and Rourke would surpass the difficulties facing them. I had to keep reading to find out!
What an incredible book with twists and turns and surprises I never saw coming. I really enjoyed this first book in a new series by Christine Johnson. Very well written. There is a lot of action in this book. I felt like I was right there in the midst of the storms, the shipwreck, and even the run through the cemetery.
The characters in the story were well developed. I loved seeing how Charlie changed, the relationship between John and Anabelle, and even how Elizabeth and her father were able to mend their differences. And the years Rourke and Elizabeth waited for each other showed great loyalty and love.
I received a copy of this book for purposes of reading and giving an honest review. If you like adventure, mystery and romance, you can't go wrong with reading this one.
I really liked this book. I liked the setting: Key West is it's own special place today as it must have been nearly 200 years ago. I liked the characters (well, most of them). And I liked the plot with it's little bits of romance, mystery, and danger. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series. Full disclosure--I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! What an amazing story! Redemption is key to this whole story. God and ours!
This is the first book I've read by Christine Johnson, she's penned a lovely and adventurous story of love hope, and forgiveness. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
What can I say? This was one of the best books I have ever read. It had it all: adventure, romance and a beautiful and encouraging description of how God cares about us. It was uplifting and exciting, I couldn´t put it down! I recommend it warmly :)
A great historical romance set in the Florida keys, with a lesson of forgiveness, wreckers, bringing slaves to freedom, unwanted suitors, painful discoveries, and a sweet romance. <3 :) :)
Interesting, it is not my favorite book because of the characters. I tend to favor strong female characters, not more passive ones. But I did enjoy reading the book.
Starts strong, with a storm, and then an unrelated shipwreck, and a forbidden romance always has possibilities. The plot is a solid one for historicals: Father wants daughter to marry the respectable Mr. A, while she wants the unsuitable Mr. B, and entailed finances add urgency. There are good subplots involving a secret marriage and a family scandal.
However, things wrap up a little too quickly and neatly, with too much forgiveness for my taste. The main character wonders "Could a man change that much in a matter of weeks? Elizabeth struggled against doubt." So did I. I suspect the author's strong Christian faith guided her to an ending where much is forgiven, and I appreciate a happy ending including family reunification, but I would have liked to have seen more of the change. I was also disappointed by the eventual disposition of an item that played an important role earlier in the story.
Despite the ending, overall a good chaste romance, and I appreciated the setting and associated details such as how shipwrecks were salvaged.

I wanted to love this book. It was a good premise and the storyline was decent until the end. The execution, however, left much to be desired. The main character comes across as very self centered and the author’s attempts at adding depth to her character fell flat. There was minimal interaction between the main character and her love interest the entire book, which left me mostly indifferent in whether they ended up together. The ending felt too neat/unrealistic and the lack of consequences for her father hitting his daughter and putting her in a coma just made me angry. This was my first novel by this author, but I’m not sure I will try again.

It is a sweet love story which has unique story plots to it which captures one's attention. I can feel the breezes of this story from the island it is told from most of the time. Will the four people who have longed to be with one another finally embrace the day with rejoicing for all the days ahead together or will it be too difficult to make their dreams a reality? I hope you enjoy the book also.
