There was no denying the fact that Lieutenant Roger Darbrook had run from his first taste of war, leaving his sergeant to do his job for him and fight a vital rearguard action. The question was, would he run again? Many people thought so, and at one time it certainly looked like they were right. Yet things aren’t always what they seem...
A decent story that mostly centers around two characters - A British Officer named Roger Danbruk and a Sergeant called Bob Black. The theme throughout the story is all about heroism and bravery directly contrasted with 'cowardice' and timidity. The two characters constantly switch between these diametrically opposed traits and as such a curiosity develops throughout the story. Who is a hero and a coward? More importantly what does it mean to be such things in a terrible, hellish situation? Perhaps one is not better than the other, since both qualities make us human. Bravery allows us to put others above oneself, whilst timidity is a normal reaction to great terror. The whole story is getting us to question these character traits and to perhaps see they are not just simple labels to describe someone.
Officer Danbruk hides away in a basement cellar from Mortar Fire, whilst his unit are savagely fighting a German infantry division above.
Anyway, it was a decent story, the theme was the best thing about it, could have done with a little more 'bite' in my humble opinion.
