Romance, Rivalry, and Intrigue
Her Affections and Wishes opens at Rosings, following Darcy’s disastrous proposal. Unaware of that event, Lady Catherine is insisting that Elizabeth should find a husband. To aid her in this endeavour, Lady Catherine arranges for her to accompany her friend Lady Metcalfe and her daughter, Julia, to attend the Epsom races and stay with another friend, Mrs Tessier, at her home, Woodcote Park. It is the last thing Elizabeth wants to do, but she finally gives in and agrees to go for Charlotte’s sake. The Metcalfes agree to take her, but very begrudgingly. Julia is in search of a husband and the last thing she wants is more competition.
Darcy, meanwhile, is miserable in London and, at the prompting of Colonel Fitzwilliam, hesitantly agrees to keep watch over Henry Tessier, the impressionable 18-year-old brother of an acquaintance, Lewis. Henry is due to begin at Cambridge in the autumn, but his older brother fears the young man will squander his allowance on betting and make a fool of himself at the Epsom races. The arrangement brings Darcy to the very same house party as Elizabeth.
After they both recover from the initial shock of seeing each other again and make apologies for their respective misjudgements, a new friendship begins to form. Unfortunately, the ever-zealous husband and fortune hunter Julia has decided Darcy will be her choice. Suspicious of Elizabeth and Darcy’s obvious interest in each other, she and Lady Metcalfe attempt to thwart their every conversation and encounter. As it happens, Lady Metcalfe has a hidden agenda of her own for this house party.
If you thought Caroline Bingley was bad with her attentions to Darcy, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Julia is the boldest and most brazen “rival” for Darcy’s affections that I have come across in a variation in a very long time. She is a new character you will love to hate. Darcy does not fall for her obvious attempts for a single moment. He is entirely focused on finding a way to persuade Elizabeth to accept a second proposal. The author’s portrayal of the Metcalfes as villains is par excellence.
Then strange things begin to happen that Darcy believes are deliberate attempts to harm Elizabeth. She, however, dismisses them as unfortunate accidents. One final occurrence brings the plot to a nail-biting climax, complete with a heroic rescue by Darcy.
Heather Moll excelled at rekindling the relationship and romance between Darcy and Elizabeth. As a result, the second proposal has become one of the more memorable ones I have read. The dialogue is wonderfully written, and the sentiments expressed are beautifully romantic. This portrayal of Darcy and Elizabeth made me so, so very happy.
A clever plot filled with intrigue, romance, and a good measure of angst keeps the pages turning. This novel is tamer with respect to adult content than some of this author’s other works. There are private moments of kissing and some touching between Darcy and Elizabeth. I still consider it a mature read because of suggestive conversations among the guests and a situation involving another couple during the house party.
This variation delivers exactly what I hope for in a second chances story: honest character growth, heartfelt romance, and enough intrigue to keep the story flowing without overshadowing Darcy and Elizabeth. It left me smiling, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
