There’s something a little different about picking up a book written by someone you actually know.
Jaime is a former coworker of mine, so of course I wanted to support her first book. We support our people around here. But I also wanted to read it as I would anything else, and my biggest feeling when I finished was pretty simple:
I wanted more.
More connective tissue between some of the ideas. More space for Jaime to dig into the stories she was telling.
And I actually think that’s a pretty exciting criticism to have about someone’s first book.
Every Path Leads Somewhere is a short, approachable read, but its length doesn’t make the stories any less impactful. They’re funny and relatable, sometimes heartbreaking, and filled with those little pieces of being human that make you recognize something from your own life.
More than anything, it made me curious about what Jaime could do if she lets herself go even bigger next time.
First books are fucking scary. You have to eventually stop writing, decide it’s finished, and let other people read the thing.
She did that.
And now I’m excited to see where her path goes next.
