Felicity Murdoch has it all figured out: She's going to work as a private investigator for a few years, solve some big cases, and then write a best selling detective novel before sailing off to retirement. The only problem is she can't seem to find any cases worth writing about. That all changes with a knock on the door and an anonymous note which plunge her into a world of murder and intrigue she never knew existed.
Though the novel has a classic feel to it, the futuristic aspect makes Untitled: a Detective Novel a whole different ball game. Its characters are well developed, realistic, and not difficult to grow attached to, and the plot is well organized and entertaining. Zellweger forces you to be a part of the story on the first page, setting a scene that leaves one feeling like they could have been a black-and-white detective from the 50s. By the end of chapter one, you're already on your toes, curious and hell bent on solving the mystery yourself. What I enjoyed most about Untitled was the plot twists and turns. Just when I was sure I had everything figured out, I was proven wrong. The end of the book is unpredictable, and you're left trying to answer what once may have been an easy question: Am I a good person? And even then the mystery has not been solved. Perhaps the biggest question you will ask yourself once the last page has been flipped is this: Will there be another one? Zellweger has mastered the art of ambiguity--a true tease. Even after the book has been shut, you will want to continue reading. Determining if there will be another novel is hard to say. Everything has come full circle, and the characters are able to go about their lives, but there is something in the author's words that make you feel as if something more is on the way--something big is going to happen. It's a good, suspenseful feeling, and I believe this is not the last we'll be seeing Felicity Murdoch.
On top of all the mystery, Felicity Murdoch finds love with a beautiful woman. Though the farthest thing from a romance, you can't help but take pleasure in their relationship. Overall, Untitled: a Detective Novel is pieced together masterfully, and you will find that is as thrilling and fun as it is mysterious and contemplative.
