The author wants to offer a variety of general chess principles without being dragged into too much specificity, which is a goal I appreciate. Some of the chess advice is sound, too. But there are also vague platitudes that seem to be nothing but padding. The text is also filled with repetition and requires editing and proofreading. Beginners will want their hand held more, and competent players will want more concrete advice. I'm not sure what audience would benefit from this book.
This is a solid introduction to the finer points of chess. It's not a master's class, but more like chess 101. The book covers some popular openings, good tips on tactics and strategy, and offers sound advice for improving one's game. On the negative side, the writing style is a bit amateurish at times, and there are numerous errors and typos. The content is useful, but basic. I found it helpful in some respects, but it won't magically turn anyone into a master chess player.
This book provides a good foundation for beginners. That's exactly what I was looking for my little daughter. And I too learned a few new concepts and tactics along the way. :)
Not at all in depth, 30 some pages of chess history and the rest is basic strategy. Geared for people who've never touched a chess board and don't know anything about it. Certainly not the "complete guide".
If all you know about chess is how the pieces move and that you need to checkmate the king, then this might be a good book for you. It certainly helps expand and introduce to you the larger strategy around chess tactics, opening moves, and middle/end games.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of filler and vauge explanations in between the good thoughts. You will not "master" anything in this book, but still a pretty good primer if you want to read a book to introduce your mind into the wider world of skilled chess playing.
this book is supposedly for new players but even then it’s terrible. the book simply doesn’t hold up to todays standards of chess books or other formats where you could consume such theory and tactics.
I've always been a fan of chess but when I play, I do not have a lot of strategy and almost always play a bad way, this book I really liked because it teaches this point very well, further explains very well the history and origins of this great game . There is also a chapter in which he explains the rules that follow the tournaments very well. It was a good book to read, I was fortunate have bought it at discount, I have been very useful and I'll practice the strategies taught me. Recommend it to any newbie chess lover.
This would have been a good book for when I was first starting out. It gives good insight on strategy and basic principles for how to play effectively.
