I read the first 3 or 4 of this series several years ago. It seems that I thought the series had come to an end, because I see now there is a # 8.
Claire Morgan is a Homicide Detective who decides to quit and go private .... something her lover of several years has been pushing for. Nicholas Black is a physician ... a very rich physician and he's tired of seeing the woman he loves walking into dangerous situations with no thought of her own safety.
She has been called in to handle her very first case. A mafioso type person in Australia, who also happens to know Black, wants Claire to find his daughter. She has been in the US attending college and has fallen off the grid. Since her father is not allowed on US soil, he needs help looking for his daughter.
Simultaneously, there is a young girl in the swamp area of Louisiana, who is being raised with a mother who is probably psychopathic. First she's a Wican, and then she becomes a devil worshiper, training her young daughter in all ways. Mom catches animals, drains the blood, and then stuffs the bodies to sell. She bathes in the accumulated blood.
These two stories run side by side until they converge with a force that doesn't seem to stop. College girls go missing, devils whisper to the young girl in the middle of the night, and Claire and her new business partner, Will, finds themselves enmeshed in a dangerous satanic cult.
It's almost non-stop action from the very first page. I really love the characters. Claire is a brave, strong woman ... most of the time. NIck Black is the romantic in this pairing. There is nothing he won't do for her and the best thing he does is to let her be herself...mostly. Will is a big tough guy and is silent about his past. I'm hoping he might get his own book someday.
There were a few allusions to previous books, which I haven't read. So, as much as I enjoyed this book, I would highly recommend starting at the very beginning.
NetGalley along with Kensington Books/Lyrical Underground furnished the e-book in exchange for an honest review.
Devil Dead is another wonderful installment in Linda Ladd's Claire Morgan Series. As usual, I loved reading about Claire Morgan and Nicholas Black. This book added another remarkable character to the series in Will Novak. He made a great investigative partner for Claire. The storyline was fast paced and filled with action. It kept me captivated from the beginning, and while I didn't want the story to end, I also couldn't wait to see what happened.
Working as a private investigator, Claire Morgan tries to locate a missing college student. The search takes her deep into the Louisiana swamps, where she comes upon evidence of satanic rites and practices. She encounters twists and turns in the evil goings on as she attempts to find the missing girl.
This was a great book! As with each story in the series, I was completely engrossed and enjoyed each second spent reading this book. The characters were great, the storyline was interesting, and the setting was full of atmosphere that enhanced the story.
I have to admit to be a little skeptical once I realized I was reading #8 in a series where I had not read #'s 1-7, but that skepticism turned to intrigue as I read "Devil Dead." It would have been helpful to begin with the first book, but not necessary. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for this very scary book! I had so much fun reading it.
Claire Morgan is a woman who knows her own mind and doesn't mess around. She's been a police officer for quite awhile and her future husband, Black, wants her to retire. So what does she do? She takes a job and grabs an associate. Then off we go on a totally wild adventure. I couldn't put this book down. It's very scary (I know I said that once already, but it's true) and takes place down in the bayou swamps and in New Orleans. I was mesmerized the entire time I was reading it and am now going back to start with Book 1. You will love this book if you're in the mood for a little blood, gore and some crazy characters. Highly recommended.
Another excellent book in the Claire Morgan series. This series is one of my favorites. I love the sarcasm of Claire. She always seems to find trouble. There are some discussions of Wicca and devil worship so that may be a turn off for some. I did not find it too distracting to the story. Cannot wait for the next book. 4 stars
Unlike most other reviewers, I was really disappointed in this...to the point I almost 1 starred it.
So much potential but I found Claire to be an over the top caricature of the tough female cop. She's came close to this in a couple of other books but for some reason it seemed too much for me. I could barely stand reading Claire's internal monologue. Plus the dialogue with Black and, again, over the top perfection of Black and his money just makes the relationship element seem unreal.
The back and forth between past and past got old and broke up the present day story too much. To keep the bad guys a mystery, they were undeveloped which negatively impacted the mystery plot.
The involvement of Interpol was beyond unnecessary and didn't seem to fit into the story. Just an excuse to parade Black's wealth and a private jet trip to Paris.
The real potential came with Novak. I think he should have had the story to himself.
Another excellent book in the Claire Morgan series. I love Claire's sarcasm and her headstrong ways. She always seems to find trouble or should I say trouble finds her. She has left the police force and is working as a PI with Will Novak. There is some portrayal Wicca and devil worship as well as sexual assault so that may be a trigger for some readers. Ladd's writing style is dark and descriptive and when she takes you deep into the bayous, you feel unsettled and on edge. Really like Will Novak and was pleased to see he has a few books of his own. Claire finally sets a wedding date with Black and starts making wedding plans and still makes some TSTL decisions for a seasoned law enforcement officer.
So I went into this one kind of blind because it's like book eight in a series I have never read and so I didn't really know Claire Morgan like those reading the series. I so have to be more careful about checking before requesting. (Though it would be nice if authors or publishers would make note of it being a series in the blurb!)
So I guess something really bad happened to her in the previous book cause it talked about her getting beat up by a serial killer and she has been on a two month vacation with her now fiance. They are summoned to a boat by an ex mobster that her fiance Nick knows because him and his wife need help finding their missing daughter.
Claire has decided to go private and quit the police force so this will be her first case as a private investigator. She isn't licensed yet so Nick sets her up with Will Novak to work with her until she can go out on her own. Secretly I think he is hoping she will want to work with him permanently so she has back up that is huge and he won't worry as much.
The case takes a strange turn into the Satanic occult and we meet some very interesting Bayou people. Their is a parallel story that goes along with the case story that shows the satanic side of things. I was a little confused at first in how it was going to tie into the missing person story. It was a strange story all in it's self and a little boring.
Though I don't have a lot of background on Claire I really did like her, she is a real go getter and will do whatever it takes to bring down the bad guys. Sometimes that makes her a bit reckless, but still an interesting character.
Will Novak, is a very silent person who has a lot of pain he hides inside. He had a very tragic thing happen to his family and it's turned him into the man he is today. He is huge and very good at his job. He makes a great partner for Claire.
It had some great moments but overall I just found the book to be a little bland up until the last 15% of the book. I wanted to like the book more but the parallel story to me was confusing and dull and I just didn't like it. Because of that it just made the book to me just okay. I don't know if having read other books in this series would have made a different cause I didn't feel real confused in that regard, but maybe I would have been more invested in the character.
I am interested enough to check out the beginning of the series to see if it's just the authors writing style or just this book in the series that I wasn't into. I am real interested in seeing others reviews of this book to see what they thought about it.
If you like crime novels and suspense then check it out but maybe start with book one. :)
Linda Ladd’s Claire Morgan series has always been one of my favorite series, and the current book Devil Dead continues to solidify my love of the series.
The book opens with an attention getting prologue, that sets the stage for the books theme. When we first meet Claire and Black, they are vacationing /recovering on a private island in the Atoll of Rangiroa in Tahiti. Realizing that they both need to return to the real world, Claire shares that she had decide to leave the police force and become a Private Investigator, a decision that Black fully endorses(hoping she won’t have as many run ins with bodily damage) Also coming out of their discussions, is a date for their wedding. Happy with their future plans, but before the couple can say “let’s head home,” the action starts.
The books format alternates between the little girl (Diana) we meet in the prologue, and the missing person case that Claire is undertaking as her first PI job. Working with Claire on this first case is Will Novak, a tough as nails, barely crakes a smile, man of few words, and former seal. He’s a character I liked from the get go, as the story goes on, I enjoyed how we learn little tidbits about him, and how he slowly comes out of his shell. Claire, Black, Will and Diana are the main characters in the story, followed by Luna, all interfacing with a varied cast of minor characters that support the books theme.
To prevent buyers/readers remorse, I will mention that the books theme does include references to non Christian rituals, insinuated references to non consensual sex, and many grizzly scenes.. The references are not used for attention or shock value, they are supportive of the books plot and are not highly descriptive in nature.
The story is well written, dramatic, engaging, not quit as creepy as some of the previous books, has a dark element, but also has lots of offbeat humor and descriptive passages like – “This place looks like Hansel & Gretel married Frankenstein and they built a place in the swamp”. I found the books conclusion to be a bit rapid, but all loose ends were tied up leaving no open issues.
The book was provided by NetGalley on behalf of Kensington Books/Lyrical Underground - with a publication date of Aug 4, 2015
For me this was a four star read, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series Gone Black, due in January 2016
I had forgotten how much I like Linda Ladd's writing! This book was a good reminder for me being full of sarcasm from start to finish!
Claire finds herself in a new occupation - a private detective, unable to flash a badge to get her answers she must use her wit to get the results!
The book starts out with a glimpse into the Wiccan and Voodoo world with 2 as yet unknown players, then switches to on an isolated island with just Claire and Nick - both recovering from the last case Claire investigated. Within a few pages, Claire finds herself testing the waters in her new role with a new partner (Will Novak, who I really like and can't wait to read his first novel) back in New Orleans. A really good mystery with some red herrings tossed in just to make it interesting and a little tougher to guess who really are the bad guys. Witches are not ones you should fool with.
Really liked this book - thank you Linda Ladd for this series!
Her first case as a PI. Just as dangerous when she was a cop. Really was angry reading the parts about Adonis' mother abusing her, then the college students. I hope she's in the next book.
Welcome back to the bayou! Devil Dead, book eight in the Claire Morgan Mysteries series. I always, always know that I’m in for an intense read with this series.
After Claire’s last case left her almost dead, Nick decided enough is enough. He whisked her away to Tahiti for a couple of months, but now their time has come to an end. One positive is that Claire has decided to give up her badge and start her own PI business as Nick has been encouraging her to do. She’s barely voiced her decision before she’s got her first case. Only problem? In NOLA it takes several months to get a PI license so she’s got to find a partner she can work with and Nick has just the person. A new character, Will Novak, is introduced in Devil Dead and it looks like theirs might be a long and profitable partnership. The whole PI thing may not pan out as well as Nick hopes, though.
Linda Ladd has a talent for weaving an intense story that leaves you on the edge of your seat. The twists and turns keep you guessing until she wants to let you in on the secrets. I love her style of opening with a flashback from the (maybe) perpetrator and then diving right into the present day adventures of Claire Morgan. Every few chapters the reader is given insight through another flashback. It isn’t until exactly the right moment that the present day and the flashbacks mesh and the reader figures it all out. Or maybe not…..
My usual beef with this series has been the bad grammar. Still issues here. The author needs a better editor!
I'm mainly here for the bad guy. We don't see much of him in this one. Instead, we see this poor girl and her mistreatment. While interesting to see this devil cult stuff, this girl wasn't as interesting. Partly because she had a disability that prevented her from having a clear view of the world. And her world was grotesque.
The saving grace was the characters. Will was an interesting new addition. Claire and Black advanced their relationship, so that was good.
Final thought: I have the next book in the series, but if I hadn't already paid for it, I wouldn't have bought it.
After receiving Witness Betrayed to review I can't get enough of the Will Novak and Claire Morgan series. Intense, emotional, full of suspense it does not disappoint.
Glad I was just reading about this Satanism, not seeing it. Was a very scary story. Glad it ended good anyhow. I am very interested in the Louisiana Bayou. I have been wanting to go to New Orleans and now I also want to see the bayou.
Can I just say how much I completely love this series? Wow, it really does get better and deeper and more complex with every single story. Finally, Claire has decided to take Black's suggestion and leave the police department in order to be a private investigator. Before she ever even has an office or a license, old friends of Black's ask for her help in locating their missing daughter. While Claire jumps on the case, Black does what he does best, covers her back. He arranges an office space and most importantly finds a PI for her to work under until she gets her license, Will. Will is a giant prickly loner of a guy, which doesn't bother Claire in the least since her instincts tell her she can trust him.
While Black is busy checking up on his clients, Claire and Will track the missing girl into a web of satanic cult behavior. With a plot full of creepy and unusual characters, the story was really hard to put down. Claire expressed her very sarcastic sense of humor, and her interactions with Will were quite interesting. She is not a girly girl, but she remains feminine without being soft. She is such a great character. Will seemed pretty impressed with her too. The two had a connection, but it was difficult to discern where it might lead, if anywhere. If you're a fan of Black, don't worry. There's no trouble in paradise, and he is still Claire's rock.
Overall, I wouldn't have thought the author could outdo the last book, but she really did. As always, I was completely engrossed and couldn't stop until I finished it. I was thrilled to death to get an advance copy from Net Galley, and I can't wait for the next book.
Claire Morgan has just decided to go into the PI business, which her fiance is thrilled to finance. Now she has a new partner, Will Novak, that has kept as much about himself close to the cuff as Claire has. Will Novak has known loss and he just wants to work as a private detective, which he is good at, to forget all that he has lost. He and Claire Morgan have that much in common. Now they are trying to find the missing daughter of one of Claire's fiance's friends. The search leads them to the Tulane College and then into the seedy underworld of New Orleans and Paris only to be lead to the bayou where voodoo is rampant and where Will Novak has a family home and a life he has kept quiet about. Will they find the missing daughter and will she be alive when they do. I will read more of the Claire Morgan stories.
This was another great book in the Claire Morgan series. Claire and Nicholas Black are returning from their mini vacation following the events of the last book. She is newly engaged and finally, according to Black, is ready to take him up on his offer to set her up as a private investigator. The last day of their vacation they were summoned by a "friend" of Black's and asked to look for their missing daughter. Newly privatized, Claire comes back to New Orleans to begin the case. Enter a new partner for Claire, Will Novak, very quiet and efficient. Then enter the dark side of the bayou complete with witches and demons. I've read all the books so far and will continue to due so. Thank you Linda for creating a great series with greater characters. Can't wait to read the next book.
Loved it. Chilling and creepy novel that deals with missing girls and devil worship. Claire Morgan's at it again as she solves another creepy thriller. Just love this series! Book starts out about two months after the last book in Tahiti where Black takes Claire to recuperate after the deadly attack in the last book. She decides to go into private investigations and leave police work because let's face it.... After you've been almost murdered by a serial killer you don't want to have to face that kind of crap again. Her first case though leads her to Tulane college in New Orleans, the site of many Wiccan and dark magic beliefs. Amazing ride and five star entertainment! This author is a thriller must read!
Welcome back, Claire Morgan! Devil Dead is the 8th book featuring Claire, a former police officer now private investigator. This time she has to find a missing college student. The girl's father believes she was abducted. It doesn't help that he just happens to be a rich arms dealer, so there are many possible culprits. Claire and partner Nicholas Black take the trail that leads them from New Orleans to Paris. Linda Ladd doesn't disappoint. As in the other books, she creates a story line so believable and scary you can't help but love every minute.
I love this series. Love the characters and the storylines. I can't hardly wait for the next one. This author is fast becoming my favorite. I would recommend this book and the whole series to anyone that loves suspense like I do. Her books rate 10 stars.
I love this series. Love the characters and the storyline. She is fast becoming my favorite author. She deserves a 10 star rating. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves suspense like I do. Looking forward to the next one.
This was my first book in the Claire Morgan series and will now be reading some of the previous ones. I loved the storyline which was pretty scary at times, as well as the characters and all the suspense, romance and action. A chilling story that deals with missing girls and some creepy devil worship. Devil Dead definitely did not disappoint and I highly recommend it. Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for this advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
My review has nothing to do with the quality of the writing or the plot, but everything to do with a couple of other things. The way this book treated mental illness is appalling: "nut cases", really?!? Also, the main character's description of foreigners is ignorant and obnoxious at the same time. The France part of the book was really frustrating to read. I wouldn't recommend this book and would not read anything else by that author.
Spectacular! Love Ladd's writing style, the deeper glimpse into the secondary character's story! Met a new character and hope to see more of in the next books! A very dark story and not for the weak stomach! Loved it!!!
This one did not disappoint. If you've read the others, you will keep reading, no matter what. I will continue, they are always good to me, keep up the good work.
