A Perfect Lie

Abigail Berry is in her forties, married, and has spent the last two decades making herself forgettable. Laundry, dinner, small talk with neighbours - a life built, deliberately, to look like nothing.

Then a stranger arrives at her door and says a name she hasn't heard in twenty years. Before the conversation is over, he's dead on her kitchen floor, and her husband Owen is standing in the doorway asking what she's done. What he doesn't know yet is that she's done this before - professionally, for people who don't forgive debts and don't forget faces.

Now Abigail has a body to hide, a past that isn't finished with her, and a husband who has to decide how well he really wants to know his wife. And if Owen decides enough is enough, then Abigail always knows where she can bury a body.

ARC REVIEW

3.5 🌟 rounded up

I was lucky enough to participate in reading an early copy of this book for my book club, and it’s my first ARC. A big thank you to Steph for the opportunity.

This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, and it was well paced throughout. I commented in the group chat when I was reading it that it read a lot like a Freida McFadden book.

A strong storyline with a climactic ending, it was a quick paced thriller that I read in a day. Short chapters always keeps me engaged so that was a bonus.

The thing I struggled with really was emotionally connecting with the characters and I feel like the “villain” wasn’t written that I hated her enough or could completely understand her revenge arc. However I loved the backstory of the characters and the dual timeline connecting it all together.

I will definitely read more by this author (especially as she is local), and overall a good solid thriller.

Such an easy thriller read. My first read of Steph’s books and I’ll look forward to more!

This was nice paced, with some good suspense. Waiting to see how Abby’s previous life will catch up with her, flashback chapters to the past and events leading up to present day. Definitely got that ‘checking over my shoulder’ feeling throughout!

This was fully Abby’s POV but it is dual timeline of past and present so that was a great story builder.

I liked seeing the friendship between Abby and Harry and how that changed as life progressed and they wanted different things!

Medium paced, tense moments with some good twists and a fraught ending!

Thank you Steph for the ARC

Releasing Sep. 8, 2026!

"You brought this to our house because you had an entire other life that came crashing through our front door and bled out on our rug!"

Abigail was living out her beautiful, peaceful life. A nice home with ways she can improve it, two healthy, loving children, and a man who is a great father. Never mind the fact that the ideal man in her picturesque scene is about to be cut out. Owen was everything until he wasn't and she was about to place divorce papers on the table until a fateful night. . .

Some people's pasts are very hard to ignore and cover up or pretend they never happened. Abigail's real past is about to invade her current present. She will have to battle the old her to keep everything she has built. To keep her family and her children. But would it be so bad if Owen just vanished? Liability gone and all. Or in some warped way will this save a failing marriage and unite the couple? The test is about to begin, and a very old and dear friend is going to up the ante. . .

"When did I know my marriage was over? It wasn't anything cinematic. Nothing exciting. It all boiled down to the bathroom walls."

I so enjoy reading new books from authors I love and being reminded why I'm so invested in them! The prologue had me and that twist. . .I was hooked! Thomas' thrillers just reach out and yank me into the story and before I know it, I am halfway through. Trying to theorize what's going to happen, who can I trust, will there be crazy flips of the script with characters, seeds of suspicion and doubts, and will I finally get a throuple trope from this author! (Little bit of a mutual bi inside joke from my friend Thomas!)

Abigail was an interesting character and the things she went through to ensure she could live safely in the world was gnarly! But when you are running from The Family as a former Fixer. . .things get complicated fast. And if you are not careful, well, we've all read and seen enough Mafia dramas to know the rest. I loved watching her mental struggle and instincts trying to take over. Her past self-judges her present. What is considered "weak" in her Fixer eyes is actually compassion and a housewife going into protective momma bear mode.

Tensions building throughout the read and an already strained relationship being pushed to possibly snapping. There was this unintended comedy going on of "does Owen live another day or is tonight the night" that had me chuckling. We get dual timelines of Abigail's real past playing out and her current present that is no longer peaceful. I ate up every minute of Abigail's story and what it was like coming from a broken home to being within The Family to a quiet, mundane life.

Now this read has darkness and intense scenes. Language is spread throughout the book. We get a first person POV of being a Fixer and doing some jobs. There are some gory details, bloodshed, violence, and ways to get rid of things. A LOT of scenarios for various things within this read that I enjoyed. Abusive parents both physically and emotionally, a past understanding of someone who went through torture, mention of potential SA, intense, scary moments with extremely high stakes, some of the ending sequences have you even more on the edge of your seat, mind games and manipulation, and genuine fear.

There was romance in this read but not the kind you're used to. This is a gritty, raw one of deciding whether to be a team or not and the consequences of what not being one would mean. Trying to understand if your partner is worth it especially after finding out their true self. The bonds of family and having children.

For me there were some repetitions of information or feelings. But the pace of the plot and story didn't slow and there was action and drama starting from page one till the very final line of the book! I got some of the twists but not all of them! I was expecting some things that the author had done in previous reads, but she proved me a fool! Keeping it fresh and not having patterns! We do get some nice conclusions to this story, and I really cannot wait for the next novel from this author!

Enjoy the read and don't forget to give the author some stars! Also, remember that Hydrogen Peroxide is always a cleaning option for difficult stains. . .

A Perfect Lie is a razor‑sharp domestic thriller built on the unsettling idea that the quietest people often carry the loudest secrets. Abigail Berry has spent twenty years making herself invisible — the kind of woman neighbours describe as “nice,” the kind who blends into routine and never draws attention. Laundry, dinner, polite smiles. A life deliberately shaped to look like nothing at all.

So when a stranger arrives at her door, says a name she hasn’t heard in decades, and ends up dead on her kitchen floor minutes later, the shock is immediate — but the fear isn’t. Abigail has done this before. Professionally. Efficiently. For people who don’t forgive debts and don’t forget faces. The façade she’s built begins to crack, and the novel leans beautifully into that tension: the woman who has spent years erasing herself suddenly forced to confront the version of her she buried.

Her husband Owen’s reaction adds a brilliant emotional thread. His confusion, his horror, his dawning realisation that he may not know his wife at all — it turns the marriage into a pressure cooker. The question of how much truth he actually wants becomes one of the book’s most compelling elements. Abigail’s calm, almost clinical approach to danger makes her both fascinating and quietly terrifying, and the author handles her moral ambiguity with elegant restraint.

The pacing is tight, the stakes escalate quickly, and the sense of past debts coming due gives the story a steady, unnerving pulse. As Abigail tries to hide a body, outrun her history, and manage a husband who suddenly feels like a liability, the novel becomes a clever exploration of identity, control, and the lengths people go to protect the life they’ve built — even if that life is a lie.

Dark, tense, and deliciously twisty, A Perfect Lie is a domestic thriller with bite — a story about the masks we wear, the secrets we keep, and the danger of underestimating the woman who’s spent twenty years pretending to be forgettable.

With thanks to SM THomas, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC

I cannot give this book enough hype. This was honestly one of the most fast paced books I’ve read in a really long time. What do you if you’re given the opportunity to commit crime to give yourself a new life? To go from living in a tent on the street as a teenage girl with your best friend? Would you take it? What happens when that crime becomes too much and crosses the boundaries of what you are willing to do? Would you risk your life and leave and do everything and anything to start over and live a normal happy healthy life? Would you risk the safety of that friend who was with you through it all for you to save an innocent child and be able to go on and live your own life like everyone else? Would you take the money and run? That’s exactly what Abby choices to do when she’s confronted with a job she isn’t comfortable with completing. She spends the next twenty years living out a perfect life. Until one day the past shows up at her door. And she’s forced to murder a hit man in her living room in front of her husband who had no idea about anything to do with her past life. And now she needs to figure out whether this perfect life she’s been living is in fact so absolutely perfect or just a perfect lie and what she is willing to do to protect her family and that perfect life. This book is reminiscent of Freida McFadden with the super fast paced juicy twists and turns. It was impossible to put down and I cannot recommend it enough for fans of a good thriller. This was one of those books I would spend my days looking forward to being able to put my feet up and dive back into at the end of the day. Thank you @netgalley and @smthomas_author for allowing me to get my hands on this AMAZING new thriller before it hits the shelves!! #netgalley #aperfectlie #bookstagram #girlswhoread #booksbooksbooks

Having read countless thrillers, it takes something truly special to completely grip my attention. A Perfect Lie did exactly that from its very first chapter, proving to be one of the best thrillers I’ve read in years. The premise is brilliantly unusual and entirely compelling.

The narrative kicks off with Abigail, seemingly an ordinary homemaker, who carries a dark secret: years before marrying her husband, Owen, she worked as a "fixer" for a criminal syndicate. She has spent years building a peaceful new life, but her past catches up with her when a dangerous figure from her old world tracks her down. In a shocking confrontation with her husband present, Abigail murders the intruder. While this might sound like a massive spoiler, you can rest assured it isn't—this dramatic event is merely the catalyst for a complex, gripping plot, and I’ve revealed no more than the author does in the book’s official blurb.

The story unfolds across deftly interwoven dual timelines. One traces Abigail's past, revealing the events that shaped her, while the other follows the chaotic aftermath of the murder in the present day. Each historical revelation perfectly illuminates her current, calculated actions.

The character development is masterfully handled. Abigail is a fascinatingly complex protagonist; I found myself liking, disliking, and rooting for her at different turns, but I always felt a deep sense of empathy. Her friend from her past life, Harry, is equally well-drawn and highly relatable.

Packed with unexpected twists and clever reveals, the plot kept me constantly guessing. It’s an absolute page-turner that I flew through in record time. Overall, A Perfect Lie is a highly rewarding read that I thoroughly recommend to any avid thriller fan.

This is the second book I've read by this author, and it was absolutely fantastic; a complete page-turner with writing that kept me thoroughly engaged and a gripping plot.

Abigail is a former fixer trying to live an ordinary life with her husband and children, but underneath the domestic routine she's built for herself, that life turns out to be pretty bland. Everything changes when someone from her past shows up unannounced, and within moments her husband Owen is confronted with a side of her he never knew existed.

What follows is Abigail trying to keep the lid on instincts she thought she'd buried, and it was fascinating watching her fight to hold onto her new identity as a suburban wife and mother when really, underneath it all, she's a highly skilled assassin.

There was so much tension that just kept building, with already strained relationships pushed to their limits, balanced nicely with some brilliant comedy and sharp dialogue that had me laughing out loud in places.

The book also explored friendship and trust, through Abigail's history with her old friend and colleague Harry, revealing how hurt she was when Abigail gave up that old life.

The character development is superb, with Abigail's complex persona handled brilliantly; she's a great character, though not always likeable and definitely morally grey.

There's so much depth and background woven through the story, all of which comes together towards an explosive ending. I loved it!

Book Review — A Perfect Lie

I really enjoyed reading A Perfect Lie. It’s the kind of book that grabs your attention and makes you want to keep reading because you always feel like there is something you haven’t figured out yet. The story has a good mix of suspense, emotions, secrets, and unexpected moments.

What I liked most was how the author slowly revealed the truth instead of giving everything away at once. The characters felt interesting and realistic, and their choices made me question who I could actually trust. There were a few moments where I thought I knew what was going to happen, but the story surprised me in some places.

I also liked the way the book showed how one lie can affect relationships and create bigger problems. Some parts were emotional, while others were more suspenseful, which kept the story from feeling boring. I did feel that a few sections could have been a little faster, but overall, the pacing worked well for me.

The writing was easy to understand and enjoyable to read. I felt connected to the characters as the story went on, and I was genuinely curious to find out how everything would come together.

Overall, A Perfect Lie was an enjoyable and interesting read. If you like stories with secrets, suspense, complicated relationships, and twists that make you question what is true, I think you’ll enjoy this book

RATING: 4 ⭐

This starts off with a bang… or should I say stab! Right off the bat we find Abigail Berry desperate to hide a deadly past from her husband after someone breaks into their home and winds up dead on their living room floor. No slow introduction here!

🥳 What worked for me

Premise: Absolutely loved how the opening scene hooks the reader and sets the tone.

Characterization: Abigail and Harry's relationship is complex and conflicting. They had great chemistry and their banter felt authentic and natural.

Pacing: Loved the short chapters which kept the momentum moving quickly for the most part. I enjoyed the dual timelines which helped us understand Abigail's inner turmoil

🤔 What Didn't Work

Suspension of Disbelief: I'm not sure I bought into how easily Abigail fell into the violent past she was so desperate to flee from. You need to take this at face value without asking too many questions 😅

Repetitive moments: Through the dual timelines some elements of Abigail's inner monologues felt repetitive at times.

Final Verdict

Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I highly recommend for fans of twisty domestic suspense and morally questionable protagonists.

A Perfect Lie is S. M. Thomas at her very best. Characters who are more gray than white, who have made being imperfect into an Olympic-level sport, and who will never apologize. In other words, characters you will learn to love, along with all their faults. And those you're not supposed to love? They are just as easy to dislike. Ms. Thomas has a way with character development, and it shows. But don't think the story is all character; it's not. A never-ending tension builds throughout the book, waiting for the other shoe to drop. After a few chapters, Abigail's habit of always looking over her shoulder and the sense of unease that creates move off the page and into the reader. You may find yourself looking around at shadows if you decide to read at night. Whatever you do, don't miss this story. Ms. Thomas has created a wonderful blend of crime, family, love, hate, revenge, regret, and unexpected revelations into a story that will engage the reader from the first page until the last. I highly recommend any of Ms. Thomas' work. You won't be sorry. I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens, and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.

There’s something about an ordinary life hiding a decidedly extraordinary past that immediately catches my attention, and A Perfect Lie had me hooked early on.

Abigail was the standout for me. I’m always drawn to complicated heroines who make me question whether I should be rooting for them, and she certainly delivered. Unpredictable, morally questionable, and surprisingly compelling, she continually made me curious about what she might reveal, or do next.

The brisk pacing made this incredibly easy to devour, while the steadily escalating stakes brought an intensity that held my attention throughout. I especially enjoyed watching the carefully constructed pieces of Abigail’s life begin to unravel and seeing another side of her emerge.

Sharp, sinister, and thoroughly entertaining, A Perfect Lie gave me a fascinating heroine, plenty of tension, and exactly the kind of deliciously questionable behavior I enjoy in a thriller.

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC.

I love love loved this book. There was no messing about with this one . Straight in there with the blood and gore no time to set the scene or build the character profile. It was action right from the start. I really liked the way the characters were portrayed and how with every chapter you seemed to find out more about how they ticked and how their past experience had shaped their life or how they thought they had managed to change it and their appearance to totally become someone else( without success tho)
The past really did come home, back to bite them in the bum and I literally couldn't wait to see what the plot twist would be from page to page. Some things became a little clearer as the book progressed but some just kept me guessing (badly) right up til the end. I really would recommend this book to anyone who loves a thriller and if it's even possible I wanted to hear more about the Abigail story moving forward (what did happen after all that?)!

This was a good story. The premise behind it was great. A woman who was once a hitwoman changes everything about her looks and herself after she's asked to make a kill that's against her very firm rule of no kids.
That was 20 plus years ago. Now she's a mom of 2 kids and has a beautiful home and a husband she's not so sure about.
She's been looking behind her back for the past 20 plus years waiting for her past to catch up to her, and now it has.
This book had some funny parts and some suspenseful parts.
Unfortunately, it also had some parts that were confusing. I had to flip back a few times to see if I'd missed something. Like things didn't always flow smoothly. I also didn't love the ending.
I would still like to see what else this author does, and I do recommend this book to other readers.

If you want a super fast thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, you need to read this book!

Abigail has spent twenty years just being a normal, quiet housewife so everyone forgets her and her past stays hidden. But then a random guy shows up at her house and says a name from her past. Next thing you know, he ends up dead right on her kitchen floor! To make things worse, her husband Owen is standing in the doorway asking what has happened. Now they have to hide a dead body together or they will both be in trouble, all while Owen is trying to figure out if he can even trust his wife anymore now that he knows she has a crazy dark past.

I loved the suspense so much! It was super fast paced and really hard to put down. Abigail is so loyal, and there is literally nothing she will not do for her family.

A Perfect Lie was such a bingeable thriller! The pacing is really good, the chapters are short, and with the two timelines and constant twists, it was genuinely hard to put down.

I especially loved Abigail as a character. The author portrayed her thoughts and choices with so much honesty. I also appreciated how the story explored trauma, insecurity, motherhood, love, betrayal and hatred rather than keeping everything simply black and white.

The book gets creepy at times, and the ending was quite unpredictable for me, which is always a huge plus in a thriller.

My only issue was the villain—I didn't hate them as much as I expected because their past made me understand them more than I wanted to.

Overall, a fast-paced, twisty and engaging thriller that kept me hooked. 📖✨

This was my first ARC experience and I have to say I was delighted with how much I enjoyed this story. It was well written and I felt the narrator, Abigail, had incredible character development. The dual timeline added a lot to the story by providing it with more depth and background to the story. I enjoyed the exploration of the partnership of marriage, motherhood, and how trauma from the past can follow into the future.

I loved the shorter chapter length as this helped to keep me engaged and made it a fast paced read. This style of writing reminded me a bit of Freida McFadden, which is a great thing because I am a huge fan! It had me absorbed until the very end and had twists and turns all along the way. I will definitely read more books by this author in the future.

From the very beginning, A Perfect Lie is a book full of twists and suspense.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and the story really kept me on the edge.
The main character is full of secrets, lots of dark and crazy ideas, but at the same time she would do anything to protect her family, including giving up old friendship.
One of the questions I asked after reading the book is can a person really leave the past behind and start a new life, or is the past going to hunt them?
The chapters in the book are short and engaging with a lot of suspense and many times I asked myself "did I just read that?".
If you like domestic thrillers that has dark, suspenseful, tense and twisted story, this one is for you.

What a bumpy rollercoaster ride this one was to read! We follow Abigail Berry who reinvented herself, in more ways than one, decades ago after escaping a dangerous life she lived during her youthful days. Just when she thought she had the dream life she had always wanted, the past has come back to haunt her. The beginning part had me randomly laughing because Abigail is actually a very funny character, even though she is dangerous. During the opening scene when she was trying to decide how to dispose of a body, and immediately made mental notes of redecorating her home, that just made me giggle out loud and I also felt empathy for her dilemma. As the story unfolds, I found it hard to put down. There is plenty of suspense, unexpected twists and moments that will have your jaw dropping.

5 out of 5! An absolute killer thriller you will be addicted to, from start to finish!

Unfortunately i did not enjoy this as much as i hoped to, but it still was a decent thriller that may just not be the right fit for me this time.

Abigail is living a picture-perfect suburban life - husband, two kids, nice house and calm life. But it all changes when a man shows up with a message from her past and it all ends in blood.
Now the past is trying to infect her future and she has no idea how to explain everything to her family without getting them into harms way.

I didn't particularly enjoyed the pacing and constant thought process of the main character - it was too reputitive throughout the book, she just went on about the same few things in her mind over and over. The action scenes were good and i did love the past chapters and also the ending. I think i just needed more action or at least faster pacing in those "thinking" chapters.

It wasn't a bad thriller but it surely isn't for someone who is hooked by thr premise and thinks that it will be a wild ride.

But the cover is stunning!!!

The prologue grabbed my attention immediately. The rest of it moved just a little too quickly. However, while fast paced, it did keep me entertained!

There are a few places that seemed redundant from the flashbacks to present day but overall the suspense was good and it was unpredictable!!!

You feel for Abigail and Owen and all they go through and their anxiety. The twists and turns kept your heart rate up and the pages turning.

The book really picks up in the last 100 pages… and that ending??!!??!! Nothing could have prepared me. I recommend to fans of psychological thrillers!!!

I really enjoyed this book, finished in one sitting. This is a thriller, where Abigail is at home when a stranger turns up at her door attempting to blackmail her with information from her past life and a name she hadnt heard in 20 years. Both her and her husband end up with a dead body to hide as well as her past coming back to haunt her new family.

The book jumps straight into the plot which I really liked and gives alot of information of the background of all the characters along side flashbacks of Abigails past life, hinting towards what is to come later in the story.

Abigail and Owen have been married for twenty years, and most of those years have even been happy. Abigail is content with her life and kids, but Owen needs to be the man she married- and also finish painting the stupid bathroom that she’s been nagging him about for months….

Life in the suburbs is normal until Abigail’s old life tries to sneak in again. Why is there a dead guy in the entryway, and what is she going to tell Owen?. What will happen when her old friend Harry appears with a favor to ask?

A well paced novel about old friends always knowing where the bodies are buried, this is a great read.

This is great book and I enjoyed reading it. Written in first-person view we follow the life of an ex-fixer (contract killer) Abby/Abigail after she has left the business and started an ordinary family life. An uxpected visitor threatens her new life and she will have to use all her wits to save her family. There are frequent flashbacks to her previous life and teen years explaining much of her thinking and motives. I enjoyed the many twists and turns and for me the end game was not evident until the very last pages. Highly recommeded. I was sold just on the PROLOGUE!
“There’s just one problem with leaving the man though; the body currently bleeding out in our living room floor.”

I liked getting to know about the FMC and her past. She’s a total badass to be honest. She’s definitely a fixer by nature. There’s secrets, secret life, betrayals and lies. Lots of lies lol.

I didn’t see a twist of two coming because I was so distracted by everything else lol.

Definitely enjoyable and you’ll want to keep reading to find out what happens.

This book definitely gave a whole new definition of what a marriage is lol. Ride or die. LITERALLY

Drawn in first by the cover and then the synopsis, and the story itself did not disappoint.

Abagail used to be a fixer in a past life, and now that life is back in the form of a dead body on her kitchen floor. Oh and her husband knew nothing of said life .. but he does now. Does he want to know past Abagail, or is he done? If he is fine, don’t worry Abagail knows how to fix the problem.

This was fast-paced, and while I did guess one of the twists and had an inkling of another, the story kept me engaged regardless.

I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

3.5 ⭐️The beginning immediately locked me in. I loved the author’s writing style, and getting the FMC’s full thoughts was hilarious at times. The suspense and anticipation of what could happen definitely kept me curious.

The back and forth between the past and present gave me a great understanding of how things got to where they were, which i loved. But honestly, with everything being set up so well, I was hoping for a little more to unfold throughout the book. Maybe a bit more action.

Overall, it was still a nice read. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this ARC!

Firstly, I want to say thank you to the author for reaching out and letting me read this an ARC before the book was released. A Perfect Lie kept me captivated and gripped from chapter one. It's a standalone thriller that gave off huge "Killing Eve" vibes with the two main characters Abigail and Harriet each representing a different trait of Villanelle. It was fast paced with short chapters that kept me second guessing throughout so I would highly recommend it if you need a book that's going to pull you out of a reading slump.
