Having heard of the master artist Peter Paul Rubens, I enjoyed immensely his works of art.
"During his career, Rubens produced over thirty landscapes, though they were never to gain the critical attention that his religious paintings and aristocratic portraits would accrue, with half of them remaining unsold in his estate at the time of his death. He first started painting landscapes in 1616 and they usually featured human figures and implied narratives. Landscape with Carters was painted at this time and offers one of the artist’s most evocative creations in the landscape genre, being more a representation of the artist’s imagination than a direct observation of nature. Painted entirely in Rubens studio, many years before the development of en plein air in art, the painting offers a rich delineation of trees, with gnarled roots, stumps and jagged rocks forming the central subject of the piece, while the carters with their horse drawn wagon are based on life studies. "
"Rubens’ delineation of himself reflects his encroaching old age, as we can glimpse the sagging flesh under the eyes. In his early sixties, Rubens often suffered long bouts of gout, particularly troubling his right hand, which thwarted any attempts at holding a paintbrush. Although there were periods were the gout went into remission, the condition still disrupted the artist’s previous prolific output. On 30 May 1640, he died from heart failure, which was a result of the chronic gout. He was interred in Saint Jacob’s church, Antwerp. "
