New: Mister Darcy Series Book One: Mister Darcy's Dogs Book Two: Mister Darcy's Christmas Book Three: Mister Darcy's Secret
Silkstone’s writing has been described as “perfectly paced and pitched – shades of Janet Evanovich and Carl Hiaasen – without seeming remotely derivative. Fast moving action that shoots from the hip with bullet-proof characterization.”
Darcy and Elizabeth are now "engaged to be engaged". He wants to introduce her into the Knightsbridge Road Templars, as there is concern that certain historical sites, some necessary to Britain's security, are being taken over by persons who will not continue to guard those. Darcy wants her insight and her discernment. She is to be his spy. Charles Bingley, (also a member), has had a note put in his pocket while on his honeymoon with Jane which mentions a danger to a Red Rosary. Darcy explains what this is and ODC go to the Temple Church to try to determine the threat.
There are many connections to the historical Templars but this is not a modern day branch. It has it own agenda.
Wickham shows up again and claims innocence in his role in the previous kidnapping of Georgiana. Georgiana is acting strangely and Darcy urges Elizabeth to further befriend her to try to determine what is going on, does she have a secret, has she NOT learned from her previous misalliance? We also have Collins showing up. He is not the Hunsford Vicar in this modern day tale. Caroline, seeing that Elizabeth has now "captured" Darcy has found her own lover...but when he seems to flirt with Elizabeth "war" is declared with some humorous results.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bennet has had to "move" into the Pansy Cottage to take care of Elizabeth's dogs in her absence. Here again, Elizabeth's sixth sense tells her something is going on with her father. Could he have a woman with him, an affair, now that he is living away from his wife?
Darcy locks his study. He admits to having secrets but reassures Elizabeth that he will reveal all before they marry. So when he is called away suddenly and forgets to lock that room...well, this Elizbeth is not above entering that room even with the pretext of looking for a key with which to lock it. She also keeps her fingers crossed behind her back when promising Darcy to not leave Pemberley House or to do or not do certain things, etc. Of course, the times when she "breaks" those promises, we read of her getting into trouble and/or saving the day.
So enough already. We still don't have our couple married. Although, M/M Bennet give us a surprise. So onward to the next in this series. I did enjoy this story. (Although this Elizabeth seems rather clumsy, tripping over animals and her own two feet and needing to be saved from falling.)
I think I liked this one best of all, this far. Way less 'wacky family problems' and more historical interest. Lizzy is a little too Lucy Ricardo still but at least most of the Bennets are thankfully absent.
Note - I still don't know what Jane does / did besides being Mrs. Bingley
This was an interesting premise for Jane Austen fan fiction. For an avowed Jane Austen fan, the plot was a little thin and some of the characters were a stretch. But I did enjoy parts of the story and the tongue in cheek style of Barbara Silkstone's storytelling. In the end, I didn't love it but thought it was a bit of fun and good for some light listening.
Lizzie is about to become engaged to Mr. Darcy but they keep getting interrupted. And Lizzie is questioning whether or not to accept Mr. Darcy, who obviously still has secrets he is keeping from her. Add to that a legendary rosary kept and protected by the Templars, a bunker used by Sir Winston Churchill that is about to be made into a nightclub, and George Wickham back in Georgiana's life, and you have a lot of trouble and things that can go wrong for Lizzie and her lover.
Jannie Meisberger's narration was good for the material and she did a good job with both male and female voices.

While this story is well written and nicely narrated, I can't say that I could get my head around the fact that the names of the characters have been reused or borrowed from Jane Austen. I think that this has spoilt this series for me. This story could definitely have had its own characters and still have been good. To me, the characters will forever belong in the Jane Austen time span and not the current one. I was continuously shocked when something modern was mentioned - but that's me. Others might like this idea but I'm afraid it just wasn't my cup of tea. I admit to yawning at Pride and Prejudice, but this modernized farcical series has me glued to it and laughing myself sillier. There is never any boredom with Silkstone books, only awful puns, lots of snark, twisty plots, and a sidewise take on things familiar. See publisher's notes for a clue to the plot, but there is soooo much more to the story! And if you can plug it into your ear, so much the better! Might not be suited for reading when strangers are near, or with liquids in hand due to severe cases of giggles. Jannie M gives a better performance every time she records a new episode, but I must be a New Yorker at heart, because I am thankful for the rate of speed feature.
Lizzy wants to know Darcy's secrets, but he isn't quite ready to share them. There is angst, but the comedic errors on Lizzie's part had me laughing. The lotion and the antique desk, the mud room at the spa and Caroline Bingley. Barbara writes with such humor and keeps the plot moving along. There is even a character called Hyacinth Bucket, named after a favorite character from Keeping Up Appearances. I had a difficult time getting out of the car to go into work. The narrator, has kept the voices distinct throughout the series and was enjoyable to listen tI received the audiobook as a gift from the author in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book!! This series is Awesome!! Lizzy's character is a lot of fun. In this book, someone is out to steal the Red Rosary, and Mister Darcy asks for help from Lizzy to find out who is behind it. Mister Darcy finally tells Lizzy about his deepest secret.
The truth about Darcy is finally out. Great storyline, and great new characters. The same humor is present, especially in the interactions between Lizzie and Caroline. Definitely one of my top favorites in the series.
