He was brought up in Zimbabwe and returned to Britain where he completed a doctorate in organic chemistry. In 1980 he became involved in children's publishing where he began designing innovative books with interactive elements and repetitive phrases.
In 1987 he founded Campbell Blackie Books in partnership with his publisher Blackie. Campbell Books (as it became in 1989) was sold in 1995 to Macmillan Publishers.
Rod Campbell wrote a clever little story that has children trying to work out and find different parts of an animal located in the jungle.
What I like most about this title is that it creates a sense of mystery for young kids and introduces them to important traits of the animals featured in the book.
There is the element of surprise, clever use of pop-up with the lion that makes a crunch sound, a Where’s Wally? feel to it and a little number game at the end to encourage numeracy.
My little one thoroughly enjoys this book and funnily enough, me too! If there were a little more pop-up, this would have been an easy 5 stars.
