An excellent deep dive into the witch trials of the 1600's in Britain.
Marion Gibson proves to be a knowledgeable scholar on the subject and provides a detailed background, framing and contextualising of the victims of mass hysteria.
I'm not too "hot" on my history shall we say (I'm more of a Geography gal myself!) but Marion manages to provide an interesting account of British history in the 160o's, looking specifically at the Civil War as a touchpaper to the mass allegations of witchcraft by a disenchanted, dissatisfied and cynical population.
I like how the final part of the book looks at those who stood up to the "witchfinders" and called them out on their bullshit. Maybe not every life was saved but a few women were spared the noose because of these dissenters.
A great book on a very emotive subject. My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there was some repetition due to the nature of the individual's histories being told.
**Note I'm reviewing the hardback edition which is still down as unknown author. I've requested librarian assistance to add this to Marion Gibson's other editions**

Witchland is a newly released nonfiction book based in the 1640-1650s about real life witch trials. The book itself was well written and actually beyond fascinating to read. Each new excerpt and story told was gripping and informative. This book is nonfiction and the work Marion does needs to be showcased and validated, which can make it an academic slog to read a many points, though necessary to say it is accurate. I am glad I read this especially while visiting Scotland.
