In a writers' workshop, a single prompt can quickly transform into a dozen different stories. It's always fascinating how much variety occurs when it comes to creativity and imagination. One challenge in setting up such exercises is choosing the right prompts, ideally they should provide gentle nudges to inspire creativity rather than establishing so much structure that the writer feels constrained.

Those gentle nudges are exactly what I've seen in this book, in fact what I've come to expect from Nicole L. Soper Gorden.

I need to make a couple disclosures here. First, I received an advance reading copy (ARC) of this book from the author, and told her I'd review it. Second, the reason I requested that ARC was because I'd seen a fair number of these prompts before; I've not only been following them on a weekly basis for two years now, I've also written something each week for that entire period. Some of those pieces emerged as a single sentence, others mushroomed into thousands of words, but the important thing is that I have completed over a hundred pieces of writing...due to these prompts.

This book is not, therefore, something I merely skimmed through and said, "That's nice." It's a series of exercises I've actually put myself through—and come out ahead because of that.

Whenever I feel bogged down in my work in progress, I find that taking a creative break—and crafting something based on one of these prompts—allows me to return to the larger work with fresh eyes and attitude. Today, the strides I'm making on the novel I'm currently writing are at least partially due to the time I set aside each week to work on the latest prompt.

There's real variety here. Some of the prompts might bring about a sense of fantasy, while others touch upon the dark night of the soul. Some might be the first line of a story, others the conclusion. Whether wordplay or serious discourse, they'll tickle your creativity.

My advice is to get the book. Open to the first prompt, or let fate have a say and try a random page. Don't overthink it. Grab your favorite writing implement, re-write the prompt at the top of the page, and go. You'll be glad you did.

While simple writing prompts are standard for many creatives, speculative writing prompts, well that’s a whole new bag of magic… or futuristic suitcase… or possessed toaster. Yup, all that and more. The creativity is overflowing from this book.

Author Nicole L. Soper Gorden began posting writing prompts online for herself and ultimately gained a following for these prompts. Now she has collected the posts into a book of 300 LGBT+ friendly prompts strewn across several themes and genres, from fantasy to sci-fi, dystopian to just plain bizarre, with a smattering of poignant and contemplative prompts to round it out.

Some prompts are very simple, some quite detailed. The range is what makes this book strong. You can be introspective one day and absolutely unhinged the next. If you find inspiration in the first few words of the prompt, use whatever suits you. If writing to specific conditions (and some are very specific) is the challenge you desire, you can do that too. The only rule is that there are no rules.

As someone who has been curious about fantasy, but never had the courage to start, these prompts were a safe, comfortable way to ease in, with low stakes, and sometimes truly silly premises. Everyone is going to get something different from the same prompt, so more dedicated fantasy writers may find deeper meanings and ideas within these pages.

One personal favourite was a misread prompt that sparked a much different idea from what might have been intended. The writing happened, so it was a win. Note: Confusing “experiences” with “expires” will lead to very different stories!

Let your guard down, let your mind wander, go in order or pick your poison (or voodoo doll, or compact dragon), and this book might be the thing that takes your writing somewhere you never would have guessed!
