Daniel, just your average everyday kid growing up in small town America, is suddenly bestowed with what seems to be the power to do anything he can imagine. While learning about his new-found abilities, tragedy hits and his life is forever changed. As he grows into adulthood, Daniel must decide between unlimited power, or the safety and security of family and friends, all while being hunted down by some shady criminals that would love nothing more than to get revenge.
I agree with another reviewer that was of the opinion that Ted was an okay kid until things changed. Then, in his adolescence and early adulthood he was kind of jerk. Lastly, we have Ted trying to manage an issue that was incredibly difficult and coming up with the only clear decision that I could see.
Is it a great read I'd recommend to a friend? Probably not. But, if you are interested in some sci-fi that isn't full of space ships, biotech or aliens, this should fit the bill nicely
Before reading this review, please note I know the author personally.
Burton has a compelling story that exists within the novel “Unlimited”. It had great potential to become a story that explored many faucets of the character’s psychology and how he deals with the power he has been given.
The strongest suite of the novel would be in the middle of the book when we finally get to know Daniel’s personality while he is with Julia. We see a side of him that we begin to care about so we start to become invested in the character and what he’s going through. It is also at that point that we want him to win and have a happy ending.
However, it was ultimately hard to be invested in Daniel’s character because of his unexplained denial of what was taking place around him. It made it hard to connect to him and keep invested. The story also felt rushed sometimes leading to less development.
Overall, while there were some negatives another thing I enjoyed was seeing how Daniel used his powers as he was growing. It was refreshing to see that Daniel wasn’t entirely just a gentleman growing up. There was a truth to his adolescent that is not generally seen in other novels, so thumbs up in that regard! Lastly, the ending left me with an ‘oh snap’ moment – in a good way! So it pleasantly surprised me.
Burton does a great job of telling this story. There are ups and downs and the perfect lead up to explain the UNLIMITED power. I felt that the ending was a bit rushed and left me wanting a bit more. This is a great early novel from a new author. I can't wait to see what's next.
