suffers from dialogue
Wasn’t able to finish this. I was enjoying the story but the dialogue was usually pretty painful. One-sentence statements, everyone has a quick and reasonable response to everything, dry wit becomes flat because the rest of every conversation is also dry.

I think I'm going crazy. I keep seeing this writing style everywhere - the same as Mary Elizabeth Sinclair (The Glass Between Us), Duncan Matthews (Stag King) and J.J.Dean (Immune). It's baffling.
Because - why?!..
Also the worlbuilding reminds me a little bit of Liminal by Marie Mistry, but here it's not even close so rich and vivid.
Everything about this book looks too sharp, cold and frankly quite dead. Like somebody took a scalpel and wrote the whole thing using it. The writing is clean and neat but there is no true emotions inside.
Because - why?!..

The quality of writing was impressive and the world building was clear and easy to follow/picture in my mind.
And TALIA. Our FMC, my god. I love her. She’s not unique in the way she is another FMC that did not obtain powers when all her peers did, but her cool as a cucumber personality was. Very few FMCs are nonchalant and come across as cool. But Talia fits it to a T. She is competent, has a personality outside of not coming into her powers and there is a content mindset to her that’s super refreshing.
All four MMC heirs are also done fabulously. There was absolutely no bullying but a lot of suspicion and questioning the circumstances they found themselves in. There was nothing malicious amongst any of the heirs towards Talia and it was so comforting to read a romantasy where they aren’t actively trying to beat her down.
In that vein, the conflict seemed realistic and believable.
I’ll also say that midway through I thought this would be a series but towards the end, I had come to the conclusion it was a standalone…only to be surprised when I read the ending that there was going to be book 2!
I actually really liked that, it reminded me of the older fantasy books (HP, LOTR…that era), where the novel itself resolves itself in a HEA but there is still room to continue the next journey in the series.

The Fifth Heir by Aurora Riley is hands down the best book I've read this year! From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked and found it impossible to put down. The characters are incredibly well-developed and easy to become invested in, and Aurora Riley's writing is simply brilliant. I had high hopes for The Fractured Crown, but it turned out to be a slow and uninspired read. The plot dragged, the characters felt flat, and the tension never built into anything memorable. Instead of being swept away, I found myself forcing my way through just to finish. Unfortunately, this installment lacked the spark and excitement I expect from fantasy romance.

I found this book scrolling through tiktok last night and it left an impression on me. I immediately looked for it and started reading it. I could not put it down, I had to know what happened next. It was really good. I can't wait to see what happened in the next book, I will be immediately jumping to it!
