I go by the name "Joy". There is a well-published author that uses my full name (including the same middle initial). Imagine that!

I also write as Christie Capps. These are all variations of Pride and Prejudice that are about 100-120 pages in length.

I grabbed this Pride and Prejudice fanfic as a Kindle freebie. It's a collection of two novellas and a short novel, all based around alternative storylines in the P&P world:

* What if Darcy had gotten up the nerve to actually have a heart to heart talk with Lizzy in the library at Netherfield? (Worth the price of admission just to read about Darcy putting Caroline Bingley in an armlock when she tried to put the moves on him, lol! So out of place for Darcy's character and his time, but it made me laugh.)

* What if Elizabeth saw Wickham trying to force Georgiana Darcy to go to Gretna Green and marry him, so she wrote a quick letter to Darcy, saving Georgiana but compromising herself, so Darcy marries her in a quick marriage of convenience to save her reputation? (This is long before they met in the actual book.) The weird alternative universe thing here is that sweet, quiet Georgiana is a spoiled brat. Elizabeth tries to take her in hand, but meets with some resistance from Darcy, not to mention Georgiana. Bonus plot device: slaveholding concerns, which was quite interesting.

* What if Elizabeth and Darcy met when she befriended Georgiana on a family stay in the seaside town of Ramsgate, when Georgiana catches Wickham kissing Mrs. Younge and goes running to Elizabeth to stay with her until the cavalry (her brother) arrives? More freaky alternative universe things happen, as other characters get involved with people who are not the ones they marry in the actual book.

It's not too bad for fan fiction, if you don't mind:
- some characters who are totally reimagined from their personalities in the original book. Mr Bennet, for example, gets a hard knock in the second story, as well as Georgiana.
- the Regency setting being thin, with lots of anachronisms that will drive Regency sticklers nuts.
- Elizabeth and Darcy being all sappy about each other very quickly, in every story (even the arranged marriage one), and both are Practically Perfect in Every Way®. For example, Darcy admits that he lied when he said Elizabeth wasn't handsome enough to tempt him; really he thinks she's lovely and has wanted her bad from pretty much the very start.

description

If you're just looking for a light, sweet romantic read to while away some time, like I was, and don't plan to think about it too hard, then it's fine and even enjoyable.

A Three-Book Collection
This book is a compilation of three separate stories, which I plan to review separately as I read them.

1. The Library - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read June 14, 15, 2022

The first book takes place primarily in the library at Netherfield when Elizabeth was there to attend Jane during her illness.

“Steady to his purpose, he scarcely spoke ten words to her through the whole of Saturday, and though they were at one time left by themselves for half-an-hour, he adhered most conscientiously to his book, and would not even look at her.”—Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Although the above quote from P&P never specifically mentions the library, I think it’s safe to assume it was in that room and, many JAFF writers use the library as the setting for that non-communicative period of time. J. Dawn King has provided her readers with the perfect “what if they actually spoke” scenario.

“ Opening his eyes, he focused on her lovely face. Her countenance was peaceful and serene, yet her face was alive with emotion. Her lips were full and red where she had tucked her bottom lip under her straight, white teeth; biting softly. He almost groaned aloud! Her nose was small and slightly turned up at the end, and her eyes… were looking right at him.”—quote from book

This leads to an at first hesitant, but most engaging conversation between the two, that will lead to some actual communication, an astute footman, an interruption by Miss Bingley, and a some very pretty words to Elizabeth on Darcy’s part—all leading to a very HEA and a delightful little pirate in the epilogue. Truly sweet novella.

2. Married - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read June 19, 2022
What a fabulous read—a most excellent forced marriage trope that results when Elizabeth quickly sends an express to Darcy, informing him of Georgiana’s distress in the company of a man and woman (Wickham and Mrs. Younge). Richard and Darcy soon catch up to them. However, the messenger Elizabeth used is known to her and a single woman writing to an unmarried man places her in a position of compromise. Richard quickly hatches a plan. This was very well done. I love this trope anyway, but I can easily say it’s now one of my favourite telling of one. Georgiana had some good lessons to learn, and I simply adored this Darcy, Elizabeth and Richard.

3. Ramsgate - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read June 20, 2022
A well-written, sweet novella offering an interesting twist regarding the Ramsgate affair, with Georgiana taking refuge with the Bennets and Gardiners who are also vacationing there in the house next door.

Overall, this is a wonderful anthology, written by a favourite author. I only wonder how it took me so long to find this book. Highly recommend. You can easily read it all at once, or divide it up like I did. Either way, you’re in for some very pleasant reading.

May 5-6, 2023 - Audiobook
Good narration by Catherine O’Brien. I found she improved over the three books. In the beginning, I found not enough variation in her character voices to know for sure just who was speaking all the time. I do love these stories and happy I have them in my audiobook library, as they no longer appear on Audible.

March 24, 2025 - Audiobook re-release
This version has Stevie Zimmerman as narrator, who is always excellent.

Well, I have to say that one of the markers for how I will rate a story is whether or not it brings me to tears. In reading these three stories I was brought to tears by two out of the three. I had read the first two stories Online as WIPs. I had enjoyed them there and enjoyed them just as much in the re-reading.

THE LIBRARY: This novella is set, for the majority, at Netherfield during the time Elizabeth spent nursing Jane. As you may recall, Jane became ill after being sent to dine with Caroline Bingley and Mrs. Hurst on horseback during which she encountered a rain storm. I loved the changes that evolved in the library. Both Elizabeth and Darcy are sitting within reading Hamlet, but Darcy is soon caught staring at Elizabeth as her face undergoes many changes while she reads and even as she laughs. (He does not remember any humor in that play.) Elizabeth is as we know - totally unaware of why Darcy watches her, sure that it is to find fault, to make judgments, and Darcy is also as we know him from canon - sure that any woman would welcome his attentions, even his offer of marriage. We read in delight how the emotions of both evolve through conversation ALONE in the library. And upon reflection, Darcy realizes that this opportunity is what is missing from so many courtships...a chance to really talk and learn of another's character and opinions, even to attempt to correct certain mistaken ones, without interruption and without concern for onlookers and their censure. Caroline Bingley makes a short abrupt appearance while a certain footman stands guard outside the open library door. (Love the part where he watches Caroline adjust a certain part of her décolletage.) I am sure you will enjoy reading of two people making changes in their suppositions and coming to a better understanding. There is also a humorous epilogue, in which the footman makes another appearance.

MARRIED: Again, I enjoyed reading this a second time, probably even more so, as it was without the interruptions of waiting for another chapter to be posted Online. I loved Elizabeth’s wisdom in dealing with new relatives and even in holding her tongue rather than saying, “I told you so.” in certain situations.

Elizabeth’s insights and good judgment make an early appearance in this novel. But in rescuing a young lady in distress she has unfortunately now compromised herself. And at times it seems SO TOTALLY UNFAIR. Even her beloved father cannot see any solution but that with which our dear Col. Fitzwilliam has come up.

I do not want to write SPOILERS here so cannot say too much. But Georgiana’s behaviors, her learning through a visit to Mrs. Timmons, Lady Matlock’s support of Elizabeth and insights (even in recommending a companion for her niece), her decisions about her own marriage relationship, Lady C.’s and Lord Matlock’s nefarious schemes behind the scenes, and the appearance of Lord and Lady Devondale at the opera all add up to a wonderful read full of angst and romance, after the fact, in a MARRIAGE. Who is it who said, “…to start as you mean to go?”

(Politics of that era come into play – but read to find out just how important that part is.)

RAMSGATE: We go back to the scene of Wickham’s and Mrs. Younge’s attempts to gain control of Georgiana’s dowry. But they didn’t plan on certain families, the Bennets and the Gardiners, also vacationing, next door, in Ramsgate. Without saying too much…you must read of the role ODG plays in helping to rescue Georgiana and consequences when her guardians show up. Darcy just can’t let go of those opinions about society and appropriate levels AGAIN despite the stirrings of his heart. Then, the scene on the boardwalk is so laughable. Going out for ices and the subsequent “dance” as ladies vie for position on the arms of one or another escort! You must smile here.

The Bennets, the Gardiners, Bingley with his sisters, Lord and Lady Sternhaven and their daughter, Olivia, Colonel Fitzwilliam and Lady Catherine all make appearances and play parts, large or small.

I read this beginning late one evening and then over the course of the next morning. I am still smiling with pleasure.

What a lovely bouquet of short stories. Highly entertaining, engaging and heartfelt read.

"The library"
Caught staring by Elizabeth in the Netherfield library, a tongue tied Darcy struggles to remove his foot out of his mouth in this novella. A series of stumbles and misunderstandings, eventually reveals their true feelings towards each other.
Caroline makes an appearance and I loved the way Mr Darcy delt with the intruder...

"Married"
A novel with Elizabeth coming to Georgiana's aid but paying for her kindness in an unwanted marriage to a stranger.
On the stagecoach from London to Meryton, she encounters a young girl in obvious distress. Clever thinking makes her able to rescue the girl by sending an express letter to her brother, comprising herself in the process.
Caroline is put firmly in her place which was a treat. Lady C and Lord Matlock attacks was not so easily put to rest though.
Adored this strong and wise Elizabeth, one of the best interpretations I have read. Darcy was decisive and strong but does let his pride get in the way of his happiness at times...
Loved the way their relationship developed.
One of my all time favourite stories.
The reflections Darcy had on his own performance and past behaviour was especially lovely. I think it is a quality stamp when reflections are one of the best part of the story...

"Ramsgate"
Novella where the Bennet's are on holiday in Ramsgate and becomes friends with Georgiana. Darcy enters, falls in love but seem rather unaware of the fact...
Colonel Fitzwilliam joins them after being summoned by Georgiana who is not as blind as her brother. Add the Bingley's, a matchmaking father of the ton and Lady C to the mix and the chaos is complete.

Loved all 3 stories and heartily recommend this book!

Oh my heart, three stories to lift the spirit

Part 1: The Library: 5-stars
Love is in the air…or was that the library

The one thing readers of JAFF have always wanted was more face time with ODC [our dear couple]. In this short story by J. Dawn King we have that. The reader was witness to a window of time when Elizabeth and Darcy are in the Netherfield library during the time Elizabeth helped care for Jane during her illness.

In spite of their reticence, ODC open up in a way we do not normally get to see. As our author pointed out, the scales fell from their eyes as they saw a whole new side to the person in front of them. It was revealing, poignant, heart wrenching, and delicious to hear their coming to understand each other. The feelings that had been hidden for so long was now allowed to bubble forth unhindered.

A pivotal moment was when Caroline barged into the serene setting and caused a scene that made the reader want to sit up and shout. Way to go Darcy. I loved the footman…keep an eye on him. The epilogue was delightful…simply delicious. OMG!!! I wanted to cry. It was so cute.

Part 2: Married! 5-stars
A good deed rewarded…or not

As Elizabeth traveled the coach from London north to Meryton, she noticed a teenager that seemed to be in distress. The woman and man traveling with the girl did not seem to treat her well and Elizabeth decided to intervene. This opening scene started an avalanche of events that ended by compromising Elizabeth’s reputation. Yeah, this is a P&P variation so we know the identity of the teenager and her companions. As the title indicates, the result of the compromise was a wedding.
The rest of the story was Elizabeth dealing with a new husband, a new sister who acted like Lydia only dressed better and a new set of relations that acted as bad or worse than her own relations. Such is married life.

I liked the way Ms. King didn’t rush the evolution of the affection of ODC. In many variations authors have Elizabeth hating Darcy and in the next paragraph in love with him. No, this took time. I loved the little steps as they circled and then walked toward each other. They weighed their options, evaluated each and all possibilities, and came to the conclusion we all long for…a HEA.

Characters: Mr. Collins was his usual toady self. How many times have we wanted to ram a fist into his disgusting face? OH, and he was vile. We were given a glimpse into his inner thoughts…shudder.

Lady Catherine was deliciously awful as was her brother Lord Matlock. Those two were a pair. How on earth did our dear Colonel come from the loins of that horrid man? He must take after his mother, Lady Matlock. I loved her.

Caroline was her supercilious self. Oh, does she ever get the surprise of her life and so well done. Delicious. Jane and Bingley were their usual selves.

Georgiana was a teenager flexing her fledgling wings and not doing a good job of it. She was the catalyst that started the whole debacle and then didn’t want any consequences. This caused major problems for everyone around her. She flitted from one object to another and Elizabeth [well used to sisters] called her on it. This caused more than one disagreement between Darcy and Elizabeth.

I loved Uncle and Aunt Gardiner, they were simply awesome. Mr. Gardiner proved to be a better uncle than Lord Matlock. The revelation of the Fitzwilliam business dealings was a shock. But not as big a shock as the reason behind the Fitzwilliam’s push to unite the Rosings and Pemberley estates. OMG!!! The real feelings of the Fitzwilliam brother and sister toward Mr. Darcy senior broke my heart. The machinations of the siblings toward the marriage connections for Darcy, and our dear Colonel will shock and amaze. How could a father…?

The epilogue was delightful and I loved the conclusion to this short story. Yeah, it was fantastical in places; however, for those who believe in fate…Elizabeth could very well have been on a coach with a rebellious teenager that would change her life. I believe.

Part 3: Ramsgate: 5-stars
The seashore and a walk on the beach

Like Darcy, when we hear the word Ramsgate, we shudder. We open with the Gardiner family at Ramsgate and the Bennet family on holiday with them. While strolling on the beach Elizabeth and Jane encounter Georgiana Darcy and her companion Mrs. Younge. They soon discover that they are staying next door to each other. So begins a friendship between the elder Bennet ladies and Georgiana.

This was a short-short story and action moved very quickly. Like a DVD on fast forward, the machinations of Wickham and Mrs. Younge were soon revealed and a frightened Georgiana sought sanctuary next door with the Gardiner/Bennet household. An express was sent to Darcy in London and the rest, as they say, is history. WOW!!!

When Darcy received the express, his world changed when he read the word Wickham. And then action simply exploded on the page. Before he left London, he sent a quick message to our dear Colonel and he, being the hero we all love to love, was propelled into action. Just a note here: It is not wise to mess with our dear Colonel on a good day. Imagine him upset over Georgiana. No, that is not a force anyone would want to face. Shudder. Let's just say the outcome was AWESOME!!!

Enter Lady Catherine for her share of the conversation and action. She likes to stick her aristocratic nose into everyone’s business. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and Darcy with Elizabeth is one bright picture. Man, did the feathers ever fly.

We cannot forget Bingley. Poor Charles; he had absolutely no control over Caroline. When Darcy invited Bingley to join him at Ramsgate… Caroline, who would go to the ends of the earth to be near Darcy, invited herself along and stuck her upturned supercilious nose into the mix. What a mess.

Then we have the introduction of new characters. A father with an unmarried daughter, enough said. He had visions of a connection with the Darcy coffers…I mean a marriage between his daughter and Darcy. Oh the web we weave…the conclusion was hilarious.

J. King pulls a good one on us with the mix-up of characters. It was so creative. I love how she pulled that off. Way to go!!! I like a good mix-up every once in a while, it keeps me on my toes.

Absolutely delightful!!!

To start with, J Dawn King is an absolutely delightful writer!!! This is her second book, and I love this one as much as her first, "A Father's Sins". Mrs King knows how to draw you in, in constant want for more, but she also leaves a lot to the readers imagination. She knows how to write that perfect balance.

In "One Love - Two Hearts - Three Stories," we see 3 different options for how Elizabeth and Darcy meet and marry.

1. The Library - what if Darcy could not help himself from looking - staring - at Elizabeth more than propriety allowed? What if they talked things through? What if Caroline was so clueless yet so brazen? (LOL had to throw that one in there!! Haha!). I loved this short story. It shows how flawed ODC really is and how arrogant and prejudiced they BOTH were. I loved the fact that they held a conversation and put things on the table!!! Well done!!

2. Married! - what if during the elopement, Elizabeth was on the same coach as Wickham, Georgiana, and Mrs Younge? What if Elizabeth was summoned home as the prospective bride of the slimy Mr Collins? This is a more full-length story, and very delightful in how Elizabeth and Darcy meet. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, it had just the right amount of angst that I wasn't a nervous wreck, but enough that it wasn't boring. Some may say it was to quick with the emotions and attachment of ODC, but that is the prerogative of the writer. This is not exactly canon, but it is in a way. I actually enjoyed the stubborn and entitled Georgiana struggling to understand how her decisions have consequences, and how Elizabeth is amazing with the reformation of Georgiana. I always felt she got off too easy in regards to her near elopement with Wickham.

3. Ramsgate - what if the Gardiners and Bennet's were in Ramsgate at the same time as Georgiana? What if Georigana fell fast in friendship with Elizabeth? This story was short but sweet. It starts with Elizabeth and Georgiana becoming fast friends while vacationing in Ramsgate. With this friendship, Georgiana finds she has someone to turn to when she finds things aren't as they seem. With Elizabeth's guidance and support, Georgiana sums Darcy to Ramsgate. Again some may not like the short but sweet, but I loved this story, it was refreshing to see Darcy not struggle so much with his affections, and to have the support of Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana.

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any and all JAFFer, especially if you are in the need for a D&E book with reduced angst!!!! I look forward to what else the talented J Dawn King publishes in the future, she has a devoted reader in me!!!!

Triple the Darcy, Triple the Elizabeth, Triple the Romance!

Austenesque anthologies seem to be all the rage at the moment! I love that authors are writing Austenesque-inspired short stories, and novellas – not every plot bunny can be fleshed out into a full-length novel! And these shorter works are great for readers who may be looking for a quick dip into Jane Austen’s world or who perhaps only have brief bouts of reading time available. I think it is wonderful that Ms. King challenged herself to write these more compact stories and I’m so pleased she published them all together in one collection! As a reader, I love that all the stories are together in one volume (and that it comes in paperback!)

Since there are three stories, I thought I’d breakdown my review and talk about each one individually. I hope you find it helpful!

THE LIBRARY: A Pride and Prejudice Novelette

- The Premise: What if Darcy, instead of completely ignoring Elizabeth while they both sat in the Netherfield library reading, was caught staring? And what if amiable conversations, revealing concessions, and changing perceptions were the results of these two being left alone in the library undisturbed?

- What I Loved: That the development of such a sweet romance took place in a library! As soon as Darcy is frank with Elizabeth, their relationship begins to evolve and it was very pleasing to witness these two reach an understanding of each other so quickly. I also loved reading the footman’s thoughts about the residents of Netherfield and I especially loved his part in the epilogue! In addition, I thought it creative that all the chapter titles began with the letter C. This short work was very clever and charming!

MARRIED: A Pride and Prejudice Novella

- The Premise: What if Elizabeth, traveling by stage from London, noticed the odd and distressed behaviors of her traveling companions and decided to intervene? What if Elizabeth’s kindhearted and courageous actions landed her in a dilemma that could cause damage to reputation?

- What I Loved: How Colonel Fitzwilliam easily saw how perfect Darcy and Elizabeth were for each other and conveniently used Elizabeth’s dilemma as reason for them to marry with all haste! It is always interesting to see how Darcy and Elizabeth fall in love after marriage, and this tale showed how easily and effortlessly it can be between these two. I thought the development of Georgiana’s character interesting and greatly admired Elizabeth’s actions towards her and towards her husband. I also greatly enjoyed Lady Matlock and her support and love for her family. This variation had a lot of family drama and I found it equally eventful and exciting!

RAMSGATE: A Pride and Prejudice Novelette

- The Premise: The Bennets are taking a sea-side holiday in Ramsgate with the Gardiners, what if they befriended Miss Georgiana Darcy and she came to them in distress about the actions of George Wickahm?

- What I Loved: Seeing Georgiana and Elizabeth as friends before Elizabeth even met Mr. Darcy! I thought it was hilarious how Colonel Fitzwilliam and the Bingleys also showed up and how the couples paired off with each other! Darcy’s actions were very sweet and endearing in this tale.

CONCLUSION:

I loved reading these heart-felt and beautiful scenes of romance between Darcy and Elizabeth! These delightful tales is a perfect way to satisfy your Darcy and Elizabeth romance fix as the stories are very Darcy-and-Elizabeth centric, full of swift understandings, and usually include very brief courtships. Besides her thoughtful and tender approach to our beloved couple, what I enjoy most about Ms. King’s style of writing is how she illustrates her scenes with descriptive prose and the use of similes. I look forward to reading more works by J. Dawn King in the future, whether they be short-story, novella, or full-length novel!

3 delightful stories

I enjoyed all 3 stories immensely. There is something about the author’s writing style. It resonates in my head. I don’t think of anything else but the story. And they are hard to put down.

I recommend this book highly.

Great short stories, that left me wanting for more. All three of them have D&E relationship progress quickly, without majority of canon misunderstandings and angst. Luckily, J. Dawn King writes her short stories in such a way, that they don't suffer too much from their length.

Two Ramsgate stories are my favorite, I love Elizabeth disturbing Wickham's plans. With many entertaining original characters, and plenty of humor, they are a delight to read.

So I started out really liking the first short story, until IT WENT SO FAST! Like a lot happen in the library! Then I started out with the second, much longer story, and it was pretty good, something I hadn't read before AND THEN IT WENT TOO FAST WITH TOO MUCH GOING ON! By the time I got to the third story I knew exactly what I was in for but still was like WHO IS THIS FAST AND FURIOUS DARCY!?

If you like your stories tied up tout suite this is a great collection of three!

The Library 5* 3/14/22 (71)
Netherfield Park; Pemberley; comedy of errors turning into love story
just delightful, especially the epilogue, I love the addition of the character footman John; one of my favorite JAFFs so far

Married! 5* 3/15/22 (216)
London; Longbourn; Pemberley; an act of kindess leads to a (forced) marriage; Georgiana Darcy & Richard Fitzwilliam have a bigger part in this story
*sigh* so great, plot very different from original; I struggled with Georgiana for a long stretch though only because it was so realistic (and that's not always pleasant); a new favorite JAFF

Ramsgate 3* 3/15/22 (73)
Ramsgate; London; Pemberley
couldn't wait to read this one another day - despite my best intentions the collection didn't last more than two days *grins*
very unexpected; very little character & plot development, though the plot development wasn't what I expected and the main reason I struggle to like it

I like the author's creativity and willingness to go new ways with the characters while keeping true to their core traits and giving space to some surprises. I hope the last story was rather one of the author's earlier works than an example of what to expect in the future, as I didn't care for it that much. The thought alone of any of the favorites being interested in anyone else than whom Jane Austen picked for them is such a huge leap I'm not sure I'm willing or able to follow.
My main issue with all the stories are the many errors and fromatting inconsistencies, as well as the occasional American instead of British English words. This fact led to the lower rating of 4 stars for the book set. I'd be willing to disregard my troubles with the last (short) story. In case the Author/Amazon provides an revised edition I'll change my rating to 5 stars.

My Review: ✭✭✭✭
A book with three Jane Austen re-tales in it should keep you busy on a damp and dreary afternoon. Well, it kept me well occupied. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The story lines varied widely from what JA might have written had she thought of these ideas. But the style of the stories was much in her line. I could close my eyes and picture the ladies dressed just the same as every other Elizabeth Bennet I've ever seen. And Mr. Darcy was just as starchy and correct. Tea was the solution for every ill and social faux pas. Mr. Bingley still as convivial and in love with the beauteous Jane. The settings and the characters were just as JA had written them. And in each one, Miss Elizabeth Bennet marries her Mr. Darcy.

The first story in the book, The Library, was my favorite of the three. I loved their conversation, the depth and detail in it were much more like a JA. It was fun, lighthearted. And it has stayed with me, while the other two have not. Though the other two were enjoyable, that first story was the one that stuck and plays back in my mind from time to time. Bits of the conversation and the way I picture them there in that room. Her finger stuck in the book to hold her place. And the footman's complicity at the door.

Yes, this is a good rainy day book you should have on your shelf. By all means, don't miss The Library.

One Love – Two Hearts – Three Stories by J Dawn King

The title of the latest release by J Dawn King, One Love – Two Hearts – Three Stories, is perfect for this book and I do love it. All three stories are about Darcy and Elizabeth. One of the things that I fancy best about them is that each story has much time with Darcy and Lizzy in company. Add to their together time, an extremely good plot and you have some fine reading. It does not get much better than that.

The first short story is ‘The Library’. It takes place at Netherfield Park when Elizabeth is there to care for Jane. The author took this instance from Pride and Prejudice and elaborated on it. She gave it her spin with a great ‘what could have happened’. Then there was the footman who stood guard at the library door. He was a likable character and his role added a fun dimension. ‘The Library’ was a charming variation that I much enjoyed.

‘Married!’ is the second story and it is a full length book. I must say that I adored this one. Darcy is wonderful and made me love him all the more. Lizzy is true to character and lovely too. Mr. Gardiner, Lady Matlock and Colonel Fitzwilliam are three of my favorites as supporting cast, although the Colonel does play a larger role. Lord Matlock and Lady Catherine are two peas in a pod and a despicable pair at that. Georgiana is a spoiled teenager but does have some endearing qualities. She grows under the careful tutelage of Lady Matlock and her new sister.

In one part of the story, Colonel Fitzwilliam is watching a scene between Darcy, Elizabeth and the ever distasteful Mr. Collins. Following are his thoughts…’He watched Darcy and Elizabeth stand as one against the pompous pimple. Yes, it would be a great partnership.’ I laughed at that suitable description of Mr. Collins. Pompous pimple, indeed!

There are so many brilliant parts to ‘Married!’ and I highly recommend reading it. It is wonderful to read the scenes where Darcy and Lizzy are growing closer and falling in love. All does not run smoothly but that makes the path to happily ever after all the more deserving. Oh, but one of the most delicious scenes was when Caroline Bingley discovered that Elizabeth was Mrs. Darcy. I had to reread that one several times to savor the moment! Well done, Ms. King!

The last of the three and a short story, is ‘Ramsgate’. The interesting twist to this plot is that the Bennets and the Gardiners are in Ramsgate and meet Georgiana Darcy. As one would assume, George Wickham and Mrs. Younge are also there but that is where the similarities to the happenings at Ramsgate end. It is entertaining to watch Darcy and Elizabeth getting acquainted and to see how different their relationship is in this ‘what-if’.

“Elizabeth Bennet was impertinent and Darcy’s heart was lost. His will was like iron, hardened by adversity and fire. His heart was virginal, untouched by tender thoughts of any woman, until today.” I love those lines in ‘Ramsgate’! Such an apt description of Fitzwilliam Darcy.

These stories are full of romance and some angst, but mostly overall good feelings. The plots move along and hold interest throughout. They are well told and well written. I didn’t want to put the book down and hated for each story to end. Anyone that enjoys reading Pride and Prejudice retellings and variations will treasure this book. Thank you, J Dawn King, for a very good read.

My first review below is apparently the only story I heard in this audio version of the book. And then it was over. But the book actually has three stories. I only came in on the one called Ramsgate. So that review is below. I will have to go back through the audio version to see if I can find the other two stories. Until then, this is Ramsgate...

This was an alternate Pride and Prejudice story, audio version.
It was an utter surprise to me. I'm aware of, and have even read other books like this, where they take a classic and tell another story within it. But this one changed the original so much that there was no comparison. Character names are the same, but that's about it.

In it Charlotte (Mr. Darcy's sister) has placed herself in a socially compromising posisituation, about which Elizabeth Bennet writes to Mr. Darcy to rescue his sister. The end result is Richard, Darcy's cousin, in some convoluted plot, convinces Elizabeth and Darcy to marry which will give another story to Charlotte's scandal, making it not such a social fopaux which could have ruined the Darcy name. It was odd and confusing, but everybody agreed with it, albeit reluctantly.

So this starts their marriage, which was at first difficult because her station in life was far enough below his to raise some eyebrows. But as they become "passionate", and he becomes aware of her intelligence and wit, he begins to feel she's a worthy spouse.

Meanwhile Elizabeth has to discipline 15 year old Charlotte (her new sister-in-law) for her lack of wisdom, and for the consequences that changed the futures of many around her. She was to learn how to be a housekeeper. If she had been caught with Wickham, and had to marry him, she would have been a wife without the income with which she's always been accustomed. There really was only one lesson mentioned that I can recall, and that was how to make lemon tarts.

There were continual references to intimacies, which is also quite unlike Jane Austin's work. None were graphic, just that the reader is aware they are going off to, well, you get the idea... or public displays of affection, (hugs, etc.) which was also just not done in polite society in this era.

Nothing with a spiritual element at all that I can recall. No church, no praying, no references to God.

Other than the narrator, who was quite good, I can't really recommend it.

This is book with two very short but enjoyable stories and one longer and wonderfully busy story. This book is clean and fairly angst free.

The first story The Library is what convinced me to buy. It is a unique spin on Darcy and Lizzy in the Netherfield library where all is explained and love can blossom.

The Second has Darcy & Lizzy marrying to cover up Georgiana's attempted elopement. This is a little more angsty and dramatic. There are plenty of twists and turns Miss Austen never considered.

The last story is an imaginative What-if that the Bennets and Gardiners are in Ramsgate and can help Georgiana and Lizzy and Darcy meet more as equals.

I loved the three stories....2 short Novellas and one full length story. Joy writes in a way that has some angst, but not too much.

The first (novella): The Library is what if Elizabeth and Darcy had talked while Jane was at Netherfield.

The second: (full length novel): Married is when Elizabeth is called home from the Gardner's to marry Mr. Collins.

The third (novella): Ramsgate shows how Elizabeth helps Georgiana in a time of need

Joy handles each story with love and humor, which makes you fall in love with Darcy and Elizabeth all over again.

Short and sweet

I just loved these 3 stories. Two of them I think could be counted as short stories and one is more like a novela. All three were enjoyable, relatively free of angst, well produced and worth the evening spent reading them.

I think it's my least favourite P&P retelling of King's I've read to date. There's little in common with Austen's original apart from the character's names and I feel that these versions simply did not work for me.

Received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Since this book has three different stories I will be looking at each story individually.

The Library - This is a cute little story. The main premise of it is Darcy declaring his love way before Hunsford in the Netherfield library. The only thing that gets me is that Elizabeth at one point tells him that she doesn't love him but by the time they leave the library she's in love with him. Talk about changing your feelings way to fast. I did like that Caroline got walked forcefully out the library. And the footman ogling her assets was hilarious.

Married! - The premise of this story is that Elizabeth and Darcy have to marry because of Georgiana's actions at Ramsgate. Elizabeth writes a letter to him to get him to save his sister from Wickham and Mrs. Younge. However since Lizzy wrote a single man who is not connected to her in any way a letter she is now compromised. Georgiana in this book goes from being shy to being a spoiled little bitch because Elizabeth and Darcy decide to punish her for her role at Ramsgate. She even tries to come between Bingley and Jane. Needless to say I didn't really like her in this book.

Ramsgate - This novella takes place in Ramsgate, however George Wickham is given no opportunity to try to elope with Georgiana as she catches him kissing Mrs. Younge. She runs to her newest friend, Elizabeth and pours her heart out to her. Darcy is summoned to Ramsgate and he becomes smitten with Lizzy. The Bingley's invite themselves to Ramsgate and Charles falls in love with a Lady Olivia Sternhaven. Richard also comes to the sea side city and falls in love with Jane.

I really enjoyed all the stories in this book but my favorite is Ramsgate. I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys a good JAFF happily ever after.

3 stories that are pretty decent length in themselves give us a different take on the story of Elizabeth and Darcy.
The first story takes place during that time that they spent alone in the library at Netherfield. What if they conversed instead of sitting in silence? Elizabeth gets to know real Darcy. Although I think the progression of their relationship over one conversation is too fast it was a cute happy story that made me laugh especially at Caroline's expense!

Second story finds Elizabeth on a coach with Georgiana with Wickham and Mrs Young. Elizabeth is determined to help this young girl, finds a way to communicate with Darcy and thus saves Georgiana from an elopement. However these actions could possibly result in Elizabeths reputation being ruined and Colonel Fitzwilliam recommends marriage. I didn't like how Georgiana's character was initially portrayed as a spoiled young girl who can trick her brother and Elizabeths character differed from how we think we know her.

The final story takes place on Ramsgate. Elizabeth along with her family is vacationing there and forms a relationship with Georgiana. When Georgiana's eyes are opened to Wickhams deception Elizabeth sends an express to Darcy. Now Darcy is spending the summer at Ramsgate getting to know Elizabeth and falling in love. It was almost too easy but I laughed so much during this story about the helpless man Darcy is in her presence so I gushed over it, thoroughly enjoying its sweetness.

Three Pride and Prejudice variations
- The Library - what happens when Darcy and Elizabeth are together in the Netherfield Library.
- Married - Miss Darcy elopes with Wickham and Mrs Younge in a coach heading north through Meryton. Also travelling with them is Miss Elizabeth Bennet who becomes concerned for the welfare of Miss Darcy.
- Ramsgate - what if the Gardiners and the Bennets met and befriend Miss Darcy while Wickham is in Ramsgate.
Enjoyed all three stories and wanted them to be longer.

I wonder if Ms. King is writing any more stories using a plot I told her I was writing 2 years ago?

I feared we were off to a bad start when the first of the three stories had headed into Darcy's inappropriate thoughts about Lizzy's body parts. Nothing bores me quicker than that. I much prefer his attraction to her fine eyes and quick wit. I thought about just closing the book up at page 6 but decided to give it a little more of a chance. Luckily the rest of the book didn't follow this path which lead me to wonder why it was even included in the first place? It was so totally unnecessary.

Anyway, I found the three stories to be somewhat amusing and interesting variations of P&P. All three are insta-love type stories but since they are novellas they have to move fast so I didn't let that bother me. I was a little bothered by Georgianna being portrayed as something of a spoiled brat in them since I've never pictured her as such but enjoyed the stories anyway.

I loved this Pride and Prejudice Anthology by J. Dawn King. I enjoy reading JAFF and these short stories were delightful. They are what-if variations of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The Library is a variation of what occurs in the library at Netherfield when Lizzy is attending to the care of her sister Jane. Married, finds Lizzy helping a scared Georgiana who is travelling with Wickham only to be forced into a marriage with Mr. Darcy. Finally, Ramsgate! tells of events that happen at Ramsgate with the Bennets vacationing there and meeting with a distressed Georgiana. This short story anthology is a must read for those who enjoy JAFF.

So enjoyable !!!

These three short Novelas are so wonderfully written. Differing in storylines and characters, each separate story brings a new perspective on an old classic. The Second story was definitely my favorite I believe the only thing that could make all three stories better is if they had been full fledge books but there is something to be said about a short and sweet story. Each story also ends with an epilogue which to romantics like me is necessary. I highly recommend these novellas to any pride and prejudice/Jane Austen fan.
