Having sex with the bosses son in the copy room at the office Christmas party might not be the best way to further one's career. Who knew? Apparently Dectective Montana Delray of the New Orleans Police Department didn't or at least he didn't know that the hot young man who practically dragged him into the copy room was his captain's son nor did he know that his captain was going to walk in and catch them with their pants down...literally...oopsie, so much for that promising police career.

It was this momentary indiscretion that causes Montana to find himself suddenly an officer of the 77th Precinct. That this precinct is a bit on the bizarre side is a mild understatement. Turns out the best thing that the 77th has going for it is Crazy Joe. He's either crazy or there's some truth to the rumor that he's psychic, but the one thing Montana knows for sure is he's hot, he's gay, he's definitely interested and damned if he isn't actually a good cop as well.

'Crazy Joe' is told from the alternating point of view of both Montana and Joe. In general I found Montana's perspective to be a bit more entertaining. His dry, caustic and somewhat cynical humor left me chuckling on more than one occasion and while I didn't find Joe quite and entertaining I still found him likable.

From start to finish circumstances in this story were bizarre and definitely over the top and while the flow from one POV to the other could have been a bit smoother. I was definitely entertained by the bizarre events that happened at the 77th precinct and enjoyed my brief visit there.

I'm not familiar with both authors' works, I think this book is my first time reading theirs. SURPRISE... considering how many books these two already had.

The book started hilariously fun. In fact, the story reminds me of watching TV series "Brooklyn 99", which was quite entertaining. It was told in first person from Detective Delray's POV. A few chapter in, the POV changed as - I assumed - the author writing it. And this shifted the overall nature and tone of the story as well, that bothered me and wiped the fun of enjoying the story. I didn't know which author wrote which part, but if even an amateur reader like myself notice the difference...?

Added to that I found some glitch with detail concerning the closet. One might considered it minor but stuff like this always bugged the hell out of me.

So, to summarize: this was a light, bit of a romp and smutty reading.

This book was amusing, and if you're a fan of A.J. Llewellyn, I'd recommend reading it. I only gave it three stars because Llewellyn's work always feels rushed to me, and this book was no exception. I was left with the impression that while I did not think the story was a waste of time, I would have enjoyed it so much more if I hadn't gotten whiplash reading through it.

Crazy Joe and Montana were great MCs. They both had their quirks (Joe more so than Montana), and Joe's mindreading lead to some pretty funny situations. Especially in the beginning of the story, he would spout off seemingly random comments or answer something Montana had been thinking about, throwing Montana completely off guard. The viewpoints alternated, and I was disappointed this didn't happen as much when the story was told through Joe's eyes.

There's a lot of ridiculousness in this story, which I wasn't prepared for from reading the blurb. I don't mean that in a bad way, but I can definitely see this story only appealing to people with quirky senses of humor. Quite a bit of this ridiculousness involves sexual practices in one form or another , but here's a relatively tame excerpt that I think is a pretty good example:

"I'm going to give you a choice," Pool said. "You can work with Chester Wolfencraft. We call him Wolf for short on account of his unibrow, which makes him look like, you know, a, um, werewolf. Or you can work with Crazy Joe. Stacy has a... well... she's been diagnosed with sexual... irregularities. She's on meds. Wolf is okay but he's a compulsive ball handler, so don't shake his paw or let him peel your oranges or anything. Make sure he takes his coat with him."

Montana Delray is on the fast track to success until a small indiscretion temporarily derailed him to New Orleans 77th Precinct. The only detective even remotely considered normal at the 77th is Joe Hunter. Working together, Montana realized Joe is not so crazy after all.

Crazy Joe is an amusing story of a collection of detectives who each have personality quirks considered a bit strange. The plot features several nuisance crimes like the cross dresser who stole his outfits or the public park flasher. There is also a bizarre case involving out of the ordinary toys.

Before Montana arrived, Joe was the only one without a truly weird idiosyncrasy, being an intuitive person is a gift. Joe’s problem is that he blurts out whatever insights he picks up which makes it hard to sustain a long term relationship.

Montana, on the other hand, seems to have a problem asking the basic preliminary questions before having sexual activities with cute gay guys.

I enjoyed Crazy Joe immensely, especially the incredibly unconventional crime cases.

Really wish there was a half-star option because this one falls more in the OK than the Liked It category for me to give it that third star. But I did get it finished and no, I did not hate it or even dislike it enough to award no stars so two it is for now. I think one must be drunk to fully appreciate this book, unfortunately I was completely sober. Can we say "Bedroom Farce"? Because, other than the absence of slamming doors, this whole madcap escapade certainly fits the description.

After being caught with the boss' son at the Christmas party, Detective Montana Delray is sent to the 77th precinct AKA the funny farm. On his first day there, he meets and is partnered up with Detective Joe Hunter or Crazy Joe.

This book was kind of like watching a slap stick comedy. Things that would never happen in real life took place during this story. The authors had me snort laughing throughout the entire book. I loved Joe and Montana. They had a good chemistry and connection.

The mystery portion, while outrageous, unbelievable and hilarious was also intriguing and kept me guessing as to what was going to happen next.

This isn't a book to be taken seriously, but it was an entertaining and fun to read. We even get a little romance, sweetness and even some steamy sex. The story is well-written, and was a joy to read. I'm hoping there will be other Montana and Joe adventures in the future. I think this would make an amazing series!! Very recommendable!!

Dream pairing of two of my favorite authors? Of course I’m going to read this!
Crazy Joe started out light hearted and fun. I caught myself sniggering a few times but there came a point in the story where it just felt a little off. A little unbalanced. It’s almost as if there was a breakdown between Llewllyn and Manly.
A truly successful writing duo may spin a story so well written they mesh/ blend well. In essence you should;t be able to tell that this story is the brainchild of two people. That’s precisely what happened with Crazy Joe and it quickly lost its appeal because I felt like I was being pulled in two different directions. The destination is obviously clear ( an HEA), but the journey there was just too confusing.
Montana and Joe came across a bit schizophrenic at times.
I would still recommend reading it but if this is your first time reading Manly or LLewllyn they have much offering available than this one. I highly recommend:

Review:
This is a quick read that is pretty fast paced. Plot Detective Montana Delray has been transferred to the nutty 77th Precinct after the captain of his old precinct caught him doing his son. The 77th Precinct is full of interesting characters including Detective Joe Hunter, who is psychic. Partnering with a psychic has it’s advantages, but it also has some disadvantages when you partner can read your mind. Lucky for both Montana and Joe, they seem to be thinking the same thing. The chemistry between Joe and Montana is fun. The pacing is almost too fast. Sometimes it was difficult which character was speaking. The story has a good ending. With only 97 pages, there wasn’t much in the way of character development. If you are looking for a deep story this isn’t one, but it is fun, a little silly and pretty entertaining.

***Two Stars for a Bizarre Short Story***

Montana got busted with his pants down by his police captain and said captain’s son. As a result, he got transferred to the crazy house, also known as the 77th Precinct. Joe is prescient and makes most folks uncomfortable because he hears their thoughts, generally whether he wants to or not. When this duo teams up, curious things happen.

This started well, and I thought I was going to readily enjoy it. It went sideways in a hurry, however, and I lost my ability to enjoy it because I kept getting hung up on things like sexual harassment in the workplace and senile doorkeepers, seriously kinky cop fetishes. The first two pulled me out of the story every time, and the last left me feeling as though all the police in this fictional version of New Orleans are corrupt morons. The plot was choppy, presumably because of the two authors collaborating and not meshing well, and as a result the pacing was also quite varied. There is no character development to speak of; rather, there is a character reveal that alters the reader’s perception (for the better, to be sure).

I just wasn’t impressed, and I can’t recommend this book. Each of the authors have other books that I would most definitely recommend. This one just fell very flat for me.

The biggest problem I have with this book is that the in-your-face characters' humor is interspersed with a side-dish of storyline, when it could have been a solid story enhanced with smutty mischief and snarky comebacks. Instead, the implausible circumstances that land Montana Delray in the 77th Precinct's realm of outlandish behavior and crude humor are only the beginning of his rapid descent into an increasingly bizarre plot. The lack of development and follow through turned the initial mystery into a tangled mess of intimations that go nowhere.

My favorite part of this story was Joe. He's a bit of a smart-ass, has no mind-to-mouth filter, tends to make a terrible first, second (and sometimes even third) impression, but inexplicably grows on a person over time. He's awesome! =)

I didn't hate it, but I definitely wouldn't read it again.

I finally read this after purchasing it months ago. Thought I'd lost it after forgetting to download it (or so I thought). This was very funny and I liked the cross-dressing nun and the humor of the inept cops at the 77th Precinct in New Orleans. A fantastic, full-length book with an unusual crime victim. The girls were cool and such a surprise. Hope there will be more Joe and Montana stories coming up but so very glad that this precinct is fictional. The desk sergeant was fun!
