Assistant to the Villain #4

Adversária do Vilão

Rate this book
O quarto volume da série Assistente do Vilão, a fantasia humorística que conquistou milhares de leitores no Brasil!

ATUALIZAÇÃO DO RH:

A magia do Vilão continua a escolhendo.

I can't 😭😭 The series just went downhill. I should have known and expected it. Book 1 was a four stars. Book 2 fell to three. Book 3 was a two stars and here we are with a dnf 🤷‍♀️

I had low expectations given it was clear from book 3 that there's no plot or direction in sight for this series. The writing isn't the best, sure the editing and humor tries to do its best. But how long with the quirky writing carry you without anything substantial happening? This one in particular is full of fillers. There are like two productive scenes that happen and apart from that? I call it a desperate cry for money grab.

The plot is non existent. The characters just exist like mindless puppets waiting for the author to pull the strings. The magic is inconsistent, it has no rules and literally anything and everything blows at this point.

The multiple pov is awfully done with inconsistent chapter breaks. There's no steady flow of a storytelling. It's like someone threw in random scenes together put this draft up. Alsoo there are so many pov it makes no sense. The chapters are short and end abruptly mid scene and I'm always left wondering... WTF???

I love Trystan, I made it to this point in the series solely for him. But he is extremely underutilized. The push and pull of a romance has made him utterly useless. I can respect a pathetic man who is a simp for his girl.But I cannot respect a useless main character. Evie and his romance is written for the sake of dragging out a slow burn. And for that I'll say? BOOOOO 🍅🍅🍅🍅 The slow burn has drowned into the depths of the oceans bro 😒 Evie is just exhausting to deal with in this filler filled book.

I simply did not care about anyone else. Kingsley tried to make things interesting. But without a plot? It's good as nothing 🤷‍♀️

Seriously though having this book on my shelf is like a puked hairball on the carpet waiting to be cleaned up. How it ever got published is beyond me.

~•~•~
I fail to understand why this series continues to drag? It should have been a duology and yet here we are into the fourth book which was supposed to be the finale. But rumors are that it isn't the finale and there will be a fifth. There's nothing I hate worse than money grab.

But I'm a stubborn woman and I do adore the Villain so here I am... Unfortunately 🥴

I’m not sure what happened with this story between book 3 and 4. Witty banter? No…it’s forced and awkward. What the hell is up with 10 points of view being in one story. (Was it 10? I dunnno…at least 7…I just quit caring and counting) That’s majorly confusing and choppy. Feels like reading over bumpy road. Shorter chapters and no exposition with constant POV shift. AND Suddenly every damn character is worrying about their crush (former lover, current, potential future?!?!?) in this book. Edwin (oh no not his former bf). Blade (he’s so in love with her, can they nitpick some more and pretend it’s romance). Gideon (damn that captain of the guard really hates me maybe we can kiss and be together forever and have babies). Clare (Tatianna left me or wait did I make her leave? But should we still talk about it every single interaction or worry about the gd kingdom falling apart). It was like reading a Love Island set in mystical fantasy land. Ugh. Just sloppy and lost track of the whole plot that had been built over last few books. I’m wildly disappointed because the others were fun. I really don’t even give crap what happens in the end. Don’t even get me started on the effin frog.

Can (sadly) confirm: this should have been a trilogy 😕

It genuinely hurts me to give this book 2.5 🌟 (and that is being generous 🙃) Books 1-3 were all 5 🌟 reads for me, but this one just didn’t hit the same quality or tone as the rest of the series.

Rather than the usual grumpy x sunshine witty adventure I was hoping for, this fourth instalment delivered a disjointed plot, given from the POV of far too many characters. Furthermore, I am sad to say that I got little to no enjoyment from what should have been Evie’s moment to shine ✨

I’m honestly so disappointed I don’t even want to write a review because that requires thinking about how much this book let me down 😭 This series has meant to much to me over the years. Heart is broken 💔

Okay. Deep breath 😮‍💨 Let me begin with what bothered me most: the plot…or the lack there of. I was so confused 🫤 It was pretty much nonexistent 🤷🏻‍♀️ I felt like we were going round in circles getting nowhere. It was just chapter after chapter of pointless scenes and conversation. Sure there were a few meaningful lines thrown in which I appreciated but 95% of the narrative just seemed senseless and without feeling.

Speaking of feelings, let’s talk about Evie and Trystan. I LOVED this couple’s dynamic but their loveable witty banter and amazing tension was utterly destroyed. Instead there were random scenes with lots of spice at odd times in the storyline. It felt all wrong 😑 Furthermore, my ray of Evie sunshine was missing. She struggled with her emotions throughout this book, which on the one hand I can appreciate but on the other hand, the plot was in some desperate need of a fun, light-hearted, whimsical vibe. And my dear Trystan, whom I love was acting like a lovesick puppy the whole time. Bring back my grumpy opinionated villain please!

I desperately wanted to love Kingsley’s character but even he wasn’t enough to make things interesting. I definitely prefer him as a frog 🐸

As for the other characters, there was far too many POV. They chopped and changed between different scenes creating an unsteady flow of the narrative. I was constantly confused as the chapters seemed to constantly end mid-scene 😵‍💫 The one thing that was consistent was the lack of cohesion.

Overall, this was a huge disappointment and I can safely say that I will not be continuing the series (that is if another book actually gets published 👀)

2.5 🌟🌟✨

(The spoiler tag isn't working so i have marked the spoiler part with red lights)

Okay so this was a disaster. Hated my way through it. The plot just goes in circle without making any sense. The curse in the end that was implemented was totally useless in my opinion 🚨🚨🚨because if the king amara and sage's parents hadn't switched the magic in the past then everything would have happened as it was supposed to happen then why even switch it in the first place to place a curse 25ish years later that would alter the history so everything happens that was intended to happen if they hadn't meddled in????🚨🚨🚨. Also there were too mamy characters😭😭 ir was so hard to keep track of who is who😭 Ykw i was thinking the plot is as stupid as it can be but atleast there is no amnesia thing going on but the author pulled the balled of never after ending and it is even worse now but i am intrigued enough to want to know what will happen now😭😭guess we will be reading the next book in the series after all😭😭 I'll admit the stupid humor of this book still made me laugh out a lot. And trystan and evie were everything. The slow burn of three previous books was so worth it because in this one they were all lovey dovey and i was just giggling all the way through it. Trystan owning upto that he loves evie and showing it off was so sweet. But yk what wasn't sweet that they weren't even in half the book (i might be exaggerating) bc i wanted more of these two but i was getting way too many povs with not enough plot. I love multi povs gimme 10 of those idm but they have to be executed flawlessly- this one was just a mess. I still don't understand how any of the things in this book were happening. Plus making the most likable character, an enemy in the end is the prove of bad writing. I HATED IT ALL

You’re reading…smut?” Tatianna concluded, gleeful as a person could be.
Trystan clenched his jaw, pointing an accusatory finger toward her across the table. “I’m reading a book about complex feelings and emotional turmoil. It’s riveting.” He said it so evenly and without emotion. It made it all the funnier.
trystan is my spirit villain🥰

~~~~~~
Gonna hate read a little bit bc this series is not ending🫩
~~~~~

Omg I did not realise this book was releasing today lol. Missed the villain and evie sm💗💗 WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS AUTHOR??? WHY IS SHE IS NOT WRITING A CONCLUSION TO THE STORY. WHEN I FIRST PICKED THE ATTV, I THOUGHT IT WAS A STANDALONE BUT TBH EVERYONE IK HAD THE SAME THOUGHT. THEN IT BECAME A TRILOGY AND NOW IT IS STILL NOT CONCLUDED???? I HATE WHEN AUTHORS ARE WRITING RUBBISH FOR MONEY GRAB

~~~~~
this better be the last book in the series or I am coming up with my knife for somebody!! the cover is so pretttyyyyy
i might be crazy for rating this a 5 star read but i genuinely enjoyed this book so much. i'm sad that it wasn't a thicker book but hey, i shall be waiting patiently for the fifth book.
this book had me stressing, laughing, crying and in awe so many times.
kingsley... i trusted you.. god that hurt me so much and the ending?? i need 5 business days to recover. though, i'll admit, the ending reminded me of this amazing trilogy (i won't say much because i'm trying to keep this spoiler free)
anyway, needless to say, i can't wait for the fifth book!!
One trillion stars🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸
I want to start with a massage to the author. It just feels right. So…
Hannah Nicole Marhrer.
If you are reading this (you probably aren’t, but I will shoot my shot anyway), I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for creating this incredible series.
You don’t understand how much this world, those characters, mean to me. They are my happy, sad, crazy, diabolical place. Helped me through some of the roughest times of my life. Thank you and your dangerously creative brain so much.🩷🖤🩷
Now let’s move on to the review, shall we?
These books are just an emotional roller coaster of joy, excitement, depression, and confusion, because I genuinely do not understand how a book can have that much of an impact on my life. I don’t remember ever crying so much from a book and then laughing one minute later.
The writing? *Chef’s kiss*. Gets better and better with every book. The flow was crazy with this one. I had to physically stop myself from reading the entire book in one sitting.
There was truly a risk taken with this book, that just goes to show how much of a talented author HNM is. The book felt like a direct continuation of accomplice. It jumped right into the action. No BS. First, it scared me. “So what, are we having no more tension between Evie and Trystan? The tension was the best part!” Was what I said before realising why this was a genius move.
There wasn’t a need to rely on their tension to make the story good. Their love for each other, the way they work together, their trust and friendship, were strong enough for us as an audience to laugh, cry, giggle and kick our feet. The story was so intense, so intriguing and emotionally charged, that I found comfort in Evie and Trystan being “solid”. It was wonderful.
And was DEFINITELY the quiet before the storm… iykyk👀
I feel like I can write a whole essay about why this book was just incredible. On why I couldn’t stop crying for an hour after finishing it. But I want to leave you curious🤭 This was probably my favourite book in the series. Though I do hold an extra special place in my heart for Accomplice… IDK DON’T ASK ME ANYTHING I NEED TO RECOVER.
I wanted to end this review with the line that made me cry uncontrollably for half an hour. But it’s kind of a SPOILER… kinda. So you might want to skip this.
”You promised me there was no world in existence in which you wouldn’t come for me. Did you mean it?”
His eyes were boiling into hers. “I did.“
“Then find me in this next one. Would you?”
😀🔫
And to finish off, a small reminder from Evie Sage;
DON’T BE A RAGING HYPOCRITE. BE A RAGING BITCH INSTEAD.💅💅💅
Thank you again, Hannah. And Evie. And Trystan (my husband because I am technically Evie so he is technically my boyfriend so technically my future husband). And Clare, Tati, Becks, Blade, Keeley, Gideon, even Kingsley. And of course,
THANK YOU LYSSA YOU ICONNNNNN. Best character ever genuinely.
Anyways I’ll stop yapping byeeeee🩷🖤🐸👑🤧🐉
I’m honestly really disappointed. I’ve waited for this book ever since the last one came out, and this one was nothing like I expected it to be. The first three books were absolutely amazing, would even say it was my favorite series before this book. It felt like Hannah was just trying to do every single thing every other book was. So many random things added, and it honestly felt like she was just making things up along the way. It was like she had no idea of how she wanted the book to go so she was just adding things randomly. Then end was super rushed, and the twist was easy to see coming based on a super obvious hint at the beginning of the book. The ending was unneeded, and she easily could have finished the series with this book, or even the third book. It feels like she’s just continuing the story just to have a long series. It all just feels like too much, and I almost couldn’t even finished it. Don’t think I could ever recommend this series to anyone else, knowing how it progresses. At the end of the third book, we didn’t need Evie to become the villain, we could have easily had them defeat the king in the third book and wrapped the series with a nice little bow. And in the fourth book, again, a perfect opportunity to defeat the villain, but no, we had to make them forget about each other. I feel like she also tried to stuff as many tropes in here as possible. Like the amnesia trope? Or the new beginning trope with a different storyline? Completely unneeded. Multiple things in this book felt unneeded. I was so excited to read this book, but now I’m just extremely disappointed. It was quite obvious Alexander the was the traitor, the note that they discovered at the beginning of the book saying, “it’s me” that matched the traitors handwriting? The was literally the last scene in the third book, so it was very obvious who the villain was. Honestly, would give this book a two, but some of the moments were cute, and the rest of the books were amazing. But would not recommend.
I enjoyed this one, but unfortunately it didn’t have quite the same spark as the earlier books in the series for me. I still love Evie and Trystan and all the ridiculous chaos that comes with them, but I found the story a little less catchy and engaging this time around. There were still some funny moments and cute romance, but I didn’t feel as hooked as I did with the previous books. Evie finding herself became more of chore that pleasure for me.
I’m still invested enough to want to see how everything wraps up, but it just didn’t hit the same for me. Hopefully the final book/s brings back some of that magic and gives the series the ending it deserves.
I have loved these books for 4 years. I have waited for their release dates and stayed up late to read them- I have adored these books.
So when I say I don’t want to give this 1 star I mean it. However, to add complexity Maher has forgotten that Evie believes in happy endings. That ending felt like a slap in the face for everyone who, like Evie, believes that good conquers bad and happy endings.
I’m deeply hurt by this book.
If by some miracle Hannah sees this please please try to justify the ending to me. I want to like it but it seems like such a betrayal of Evie and the found family dynamic you set up for 3 books.
I’m not sure what’s stopping it from being 5 but a 4 just seems right.
AHHHHH I LOVE THISSSSS. The yearning for Evie is outstanding💙💙💙 matter of fact ALL THE MEN in this book yearning for the women is so beautiful, definitely not jealous 🥹✌️
Also lowkey like… I thought this was gonna be the last book. Like it’s great and all the author is feeding us but like… I ain’t trying to obese or anything 💀
Also im ngl I got a bit lost in some of the plot idk if it’s cause I was slowly skipping Claire’s POV or something but don’t ask me anything about mystical magical stuff cuz idk.
•I THOUGHT KINGSLEY WAS JUST A CHILL FROG.
Adversary to the Villain returns us to Rennedawn for the fourth—but not final—installment in Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s Assistant to the Villain series. The assistant has now been revealed as the true holder of the Villain’s magic, but Evie has little idea how to control her newfound power. Meanwhile, a dangerous prophecy threatens the kingdom, and Evie and Trystan must navigate both its alarming implications and the lingering awkwardness surrounding the future of their relationship.
The rest of their wonderfully dysfunctional collection of family, friends, and coworkers have plenty of problems of their own. The characters split into different groups to pursue clues, confront personal challenges, and search for a way to save Evie from the wrath of the crown. Along the way, they maneuver hilariously around new romances, exchange plenty of comical banter, and place themselves and one another in increasingly ridiculous and dangerous situations.
Even with such a large cast, Maehrer gives each character enough attention to make them feel like a fully-realized person. The supporting characters are not included merely for comic relief or to play the mirror to someone else’s antics. They possess individual histories, fears, relationships, and motivations that make it easy to care about them. One particularly effective sequence places several characters inside a magical book that tests them using their own pasts. The scene advances the broader mystery while also revealing something meaningful about nearly everyone involved.
We even learn more about Alexander Kingsley, the frog whose history readers have been waiting three books to uncover. His story is only one of several long-standing mysteries explored here, although many of the answers generate entirely new questions.
That pattern defines much of Adversary to the Villain. This installment feels more like a stepping stone toward the next book than a story designed to stand firmly on its own. Readers hoping for substantial resolutions will find few of them because almost every discovery exposes another complication. Most troubling of all, the clues increasingly suggest that Evie and Trystan may bring about Rennedawn’s destruction with Evie cast as the Villain and Trystan as the hero destined to oppose her.
Em Eldridge once again narrates the audiobook, carrying listeners through its large ensemble, rapid banter, romantic tension, and fairy-tale absurdity. Although this installment leaves far more unresolved than it settles, the affection Maehrer inspires for her characters keeps the journey entertaining. Adversary to the Villain expands the cast’s histories and relationships while positioning everyone for what promises to be an even more consequential confrontation ahead.
I'm sorry but I didn't enjoy this. I think that this series could've been finished in two books, we're four books in, and the progress made in each book feels less and less rewarding. There is a harmful misuse of a genuine mental health term in this book, which is ridiculously irresponsible for such a popular series. I loved the first two books, but my love for this series has quickly dwindled.
It seems that Trystan Maverine, the ex villain, and Evie Sage, the new villain, are again a book away from their very own HEA!
The dark magic Trystan lived for so many years was no longer with him but moved and shifted beneath Evie's skin.
But he's ok with it because wasn't his to begin with.
He now his the Prince of the prophecy, focused on showing Evie that she is his true love, and they sometimes disappear in the forest surrounding the Massacre Manor and come back quite disheveled!
All of them are trying to find everything they need to fulfill the prophecy, but once again it seems there's another traitor among them, because all the pages they had of the Rennedawn's story book were stolen from Trystan's room!
And Kingsley is missing too, along with his crown!
But Clare Maverine and Tatiana, the love of her life, seem to have a secret they don't want to share just yet with Trystan.
It turns out Kingsley became a human being again.
It feels so strange to be a man atfer so long, and speaking long sentences.
But that state isn't permanent and he becomes a frog on and off, turning up naked in the most awkward places.
Now that Lyssa Sage has starlight magic she is a force to contend with, especially in making the gruves back by reigniting the life in the eggs the adults left behind.
But magic is fading from Rennedawn and is affecting all enchantments, including the locks of the dungeons.
When that happened all the prisioners who wanted Trystan dead were roaming the manor, bloody fights issuing between them them and the Malevolant guards, Gideon Sage, Evie, Trystan, everybody hands on deck, until the enchantress Winnifred was able to fix them.
But then there's a hint by Moira the town's librarian, that is actually Fate, of a second Rennedawn's book written that's supposed to be in Massacre Manor, the house of the first King, Trystan a look-alike of him!
But king Benedict with the help of the Destiny monster, who doesn't want them to fulfill the prophecy but wants what she once wrote, will change the whole story!
Trystan, who turned out to be a core healer, a person who can heal himself, tells Evie that what happened before can not be changed, and that he will get to her wherever version they will be!
Destiny gets her way, in a very emotional ending for all the characters we love, Fate not having a say about it!
Remember the other traitor I talked about in Massacre Manor?
It's the most sweet, lovable character since the first installment of this series!
Will everything be wrapped up nicely in the next book a year from now?
We'll just have to wait and see what happens!
I had a great time with this installment in the series. Evie gets caught up in prophecy, a race for magical artifacts, and her growing reputation as a villain, while things with Trystan get even more complicated. The humor, as always, was very enjoyable, and I hope that continues in the next book. If you’re looking for a fun fantasy series, I’d definitely recommend this one.
Still an entertaining read but the series is beginning to drag and bloat. The multiple POVs are getting out of hand. Twists for the sake of having a twist to string things out longer. Everyone's gotta be dating everyone.
That said I am looking forward to book 5 (and the finale hopefully).
Still super enjoyable, but this one seemed a little more disjointed.
All the characters are great, I enjoy all their separate POVs, and this series has the right amount of ridiculous vs fantasy vs romance for me.
But this one, the storytelling just seemed really abrupt. There was a lot of jumping around without much transition. And honestly, the ending wasn't surprising, and I feel like we were reading a whole book to get to a very televised outcome so this book just felt like filler.
But I'm not really going to complain because Trystan being so down bad for Evie is 🤌🏻
this series would’ve made such an elite trilogy but instead we’re here dragging it into five (i think?) books. and for the last two, they have dragged.
let me start by saying that the series goes very much adult in this book!!!! which is not a compliment. i don’t mind spice at all, but there’s a time and place, and this series is not it. don’t ruin a good thing. which, you know, that’s foreshadowing how the rest of this review is about to go 🫠
honestly so much of this was just filler. i love the characters and overall was entertained, but it was so noticeable that so much of this book didn’t need to exist. it took until maybe around halfway through for anything to really happen, and then there’s a big lull before everything at the end goes down. which is exactly what happened with the last book too (see: the series is dragging).
and then so much of what did happen just felt convenient with little to no explanation. like trystan just happening to ? where did that come from? and that’s just one of quite a few examples. sorry if a girl doesn’t want to just blindly accept these things that are randomly happening!!!
same thing with the twist(s) with kingsley. too convenient and made very little sense if we’re being so real.
and that ending ohmygod i hated it. you can tell this series was never supposed to be this long because genuinely what happened makes so much of all the books up til now feel so pointless. as in, why did i read four books just for us to end up here? we’re going in circles at this point.
so yes, i was entertained and this was bingeable as the entire series is, but i’ve lost the love i had for this series. i loved the first two books, but it’s just being ruined at this point. yes i’ll still read book five i’m in too deep. also highly recommend the audio!!
