The Bolds #2

The Bolds to the Rescue

Rate this book
Another helping of hilarious fun and mischief with Brittain's wildest family! The Bolds' family home is getting rather crowded with even more animal misfits, from a sheep that hates the outdoors to a crocodile who likes baths. What ever will they do?
More wildly funny animal madness from dream team Julian Clary and David Roberts!
The Bolds are a family of hyenas living as humans in a suburban house. But now their kindness to animal waifs and strays has become legendary, and more and more animals keep turning up to stay! Roger the sheep flocks to their house, and Fifi the poodle turns up to learn some new tricks, whilst Sheila the crocodile decides to stay for a while. But when the Bolds take in a couple of race horses who are on the run, they worry their animal magnetism is getting to be too much. Have these hyenas bitten off more than they can chew?

The second book in The Bold series does not disappoint. Very clever and entertaining for adults as well. As usual, David Roberts (one of my most favorite illustrators) does not disappoint with his artwork. I love how it reflects urban diversity - at the pony ride there is a Sikh boy riding with a Joora.
The jokes in the book (Mr. Bold, remember, works for a Christmas cracker company) will torture adults and teachers alike once young readers get their hands on them. : ) Enough British phrases to be entertaining without being bewildering to non-UK readers. Loved it!

I can’t express how much I loved this story and it has such a brilliant ending for all involved. The Bolds, a family of hyenas secretly living as humans, have settled into their suburban lives with their new friends Tony, Miranda and Nigel. But news of the Bolds, and what they can do, has spread in the animal world, and it isn’t long before animals of all different kinds start showing up at the Bolds’ house, looking for shelter and help.

I really enjoyed this book, even more than the first. In the first book we’re introduced to the family and how they help Tony escape from a terrible fate and begin living life as a human instead, but this book takes that help further and the Bolds start being visited by all sorts of different animals, including a dog and a crocodile, who are all hoping to start new lives in the human world. I’m not sure why but I just enjoyed this story so much more than the first and I think it’s partly due to just how silly things get with so many different animals in one house. It doesn’t take long for things to get very silly as everyone tries (and fails) to act human and the whole book is filled with a lot of silly antics as well as some lovely and more dramatic moments too.

I won’t go into too much detail about what happens, but I do love how this story unfolds. It’s always funny and silly and filled with lots of jokes, but at the same time there are some lovely moments between the different animals and I can’t help but love what happens to Sheila and how she’s a little different to everyone else in the group. I also just loved Roger’s character! The ending is very good, the rescue that happens is so funny and silly, it has a sort of slapstick humour to it and I just loved reading it and seeing it brought to life in the pictures too.

The illustrations really make this book all the more funny to read. I love the way all the animals look and there are some very funny images when they are all trying to look like humans. I couldn’t help but love the way Roger looks, I just couldn’t stop laughing at all the funny images. Every illustration is in black, white and grey with the illustrations appearing throughout most pages. Almost every double page has some sort of illustration on it, among the text with a few pages having a whole image on one side, while other pages feature some fun borders. Every time Mr Bold tells a joke it’s illustrated and I just love the way the whole book feels with the pictures, it definitely makes it much more fun to read!

I have really enjoyed this second book in the series and I can’t wait to read more! So far this book is my favourite and I can really recommend it. Children will just love it and any adults with a silly sense of humour will also love to read this too!

Great continuation of the Bold family story, very funny

We audio-read this in the car, my six year old each day asking: "Can we listen to the Bolds, please?!", a clear indication of his enjoyment.

We listened to the first a few months ago, and he clearly remembered the characters, though having quite a few new ones is less easy to follow on CD.

The Bolds do return, and their adventure from the first book (rescuing animals from a safari park) has led to them becoming well-known as animal savers who help fellow creatures learn human ways. And a few show up wanting to be taught...

A very amusing tale ensues, as various animals come to stay with the hyena family wanting to become human for various reasons, and the Bolds of course endeavour to assist them, with a minor subplot involving stolen racehorses for excitement thrown in.

Clary has a deft writing style, not overdone, entertaining plot and some characters readers will enjoy (crocodiles, sheep and dogs) that he a,so voices brilliantly on audio.

My son has already requested book three.

Suitable for younger listeners (ages 5 and above), and 8-12 year old independent readers will enjoy the illustrated chapters and animal-filled story.

In The Bolds To The Rescue, the Bolds are a family of hyenas who pose as humans. Other animals, including horses, sheep, a crocodile, and a poodle, ask the Bolds to help them learn to pose as humans too by teaching them to walk on their hind legs and eat properly (the other animals were having trouble learning to eat properly, which was a funny part of the book).

Opinion:
I would recommend this book because it is laugh-out-loud funny. For example, the horses want to be gardeners and are good at “fertilizing” what they grow. Also, Mr. Bold tells funny jokes throughout the book. The events in the plot flow well, leading from one to the next, except for one character from the beginning who suddenly reappears near the end of the book. Overall, I thought the book was hilarious. I would rate this book five stars and would recommend it to anyone ages 7-11 who enjoys a good laugh.

This was my introduction to the Bolds, a family of hyenas who "borrowed" their human identities from a human couple who encountered an accident while they were traveling in their home country of Africa. The Bolds are now living in England and have become a haven for animals who want to be human or at least no longer animal. They are taught how to walk upright, wear clothes, use utensils, and carry on conversations. Their home is getting quite crowded with the addition of an crocodile, who has left the sewer and entered their house through the toilet, a French poodle, who is setting her sights on being a singing star and two run-away race horses, who never felt the need to hurry when they raced. The story is quite funny and the addition of Father Bold and his corny jokes is just icing on the cake.

Violet and I both thoroughly enjoyed this book - the humor of Julian Clary and the wonderful illustrations of David Roberts are the perfect combination for this series. This one is a bit darker than the previous first book in the series (two horses are in danger of meeting their end at an abattoir), but all ends well with a satisfying ending.

I read this book, and the first book, just so I could read something quick and I actually really enjoyed both books. This one was sweet and fun. I also think that adults would be able to enjoy this book if they were reading with their children. Also, there are lots of cheesy jokes and the illustrations are really entertaining.

Puoli tähteä lisää, kuvitus on aika huippua!

I bought this in a charity shop with my niece. Having read The Bolds and The Bolds on Holiday already, I knew I’d love this one! Another brilliant book for middle grade/younger readers. The story is easy to follow and brilliant for boys and girls!

Noah loved: all of Mr. Bold's jokes; he felt sorry for Sheila, the crocodile; did an excellent Scottish accent for the pony, Hamish, and has just informed me we have read book 2 of many 🙈

A good book for 7-9 year olds, silly and light, and got Nod's vote 👍

The Bold's return in book two of the series by Julian Clary and this time there is a whole range of characters, many dad jokes and a lot od shenanigans going on. Totally absurd but quite humorous.

Just as silly and fun as the first - especially entertaining if you happen to read it out loud and have a thing for accents. Nice immigration vibe that I personally enjoyed.

Similar to the first book. I agree with the back cover, this is probably a good book for reluctant readers or fans of the Captain Underpants genre.
