not what i was looking for. mostly lithography and intaglio. very expensive processes that are commonly out of reach. lots of digital techniques mixed in, including using computers to design and etch and sometimes even print the entire piece.... what?? also too many artist profiles, none of which i actually wanted to read, nor did i really enjoy very much of the artworks. i guess i shouldn’t have gone for a “modern” book.
Doesn't cover any monoprinting techniques at all leaving a huge gap in the modern printing world. Mainly concentrates on intaglio and lithography. Good but not really what I was hoping for based on the title.
Amazing must have for all printmakers and artists alike. An incredibly diverse range of techniques are mentioned and is extremely informative. I was able to draw a lot of inspiration from this book!
Modern Printmaking is a beautiful, substantial reference book for the novice to intermediate printmaker, or for anyone who simply appreciates the beauty of uniquely crafted artwork.
Starting with a brief introduction to printmaking, that includes basic terms and definitions, the author expertly discusses the long history of this art form. As someone who frequents museums and art galleries on a regular basis, I have a better understanding of the painstaking work that goes into the pieces I’ve often admired.
Modern Printmaking is divided into sections, which detail the many types of printing. Within each of these sections, the author presents a variety of artists who specialize in each style. I’m particularly taken with the Woodblock Printing in Chapter 2. I’ve long been fascinated with this method and have an even greater appreciation for it after reading through this chapter. In fact, all the chapters in this book are incredibly thorough and detailed. The accompanying photos are breathtaking, making this book beautiful enough to be displayed on a coffee table.
Photographers should appreciate the section on the digital transfer process. The techniques in the chapter are definitely things I’d consider trying with my photos.
I would highly recommend Modern Printmaking to anyone who may be interested in learning more about printmaking, someone looking to expand existing skills or readers who enjoy eye-catching coffee table books.

When I received Modern Printmaking by Sylvie Covey in the mail, I was surprised by how large and comprehensive it is. It has 15 different techniques that it covers thoroughly, explaining traditional printmaking techniques as well as digital. It offers you a thorough look into the topic of printmaking.
Included with the sections are history of the printmaking technique, tools and supplies used, directions to create your own projects, printmaker profiles, and multiple examples of printed projects.
The photographs are stunning and show fantastic detail of the whole process for the individual printmaking techniques.
I would say that this book is quite extensive and technical. I would recommend this to those printmakers that are quite serious about the subject. This book could be used in an art school for students who want and in-depth look at the topic of printmaking. If you are looking for a book that gives you a casual glance into printmaking techniques, I would say that this is not the book you are looking for.
Through her book, “Modern Printmaking: A Guide To Traditional & Digital Technologies” by Sylvie Covey, we are taken on a historical journey on techniques and applications of printmaking. From the basics of relief printing all the way to digital transfers, each process is meticulously outlined with historical reference and step by step instructions on how to properly achieve the specific style outlined in each chapter. Each style of printmaking outlined showcases one or two artists renowned for their respective process, giving credit to the innovators of the printing style period. From student to professional, this book is accommodating informationally no matter the expertise level. It reads much like a history book, but not so much that the content is unbearable to read through. With that said, I advise the reader start on a chapter that interests them the most. The book is written with a solid template for each chapter to where jumping around is easy, slightly predictable, and not confusing. I would categorize this piece as a solid reference book worthy of an artist’s bookshelf.
