It’s funny how every book in this outdoor kit coordinated perfectly with each of my kids and their interests. This board book was instantly claimed by my baby, and we’ve read it several times together. The simple text and beautiful photos are perfect for keeping her engaged throughout the whole book. She really likes the big caterpillar and the butterfly. It’s a book I’m glad to have on her shelf because it’s educational and different from the fluffy baby books she has. You’re never too young to learn the life cycle of a butterfly!

On behalf of National Geographic Kids, Catherine D. Hughes writes the text for a chronological narrative about the life stages of a caterpillar and butterfly. The text is accompanied by a variety of photographs from different photographers. Each two-page section features one or two sentences of description in the foreground while a large image spans across both pages in the background. Some pages include pop-out facts labeled "guess what". While some readers might want more information included, other readers should find this a satisfying book to read aloud to very young readers.

I love Monarch butterflies! The photographs in this book are beautiful, but it felt like there should've been more photos and more information! Several of the pages in the book only contain one sentence without any photos or anything! The text is just okay. Sadly, I don't see myself buying this one as it isn't one of my favorite books of the National Geographic Kids series. This one could use some work.

Cute book. I like how it is simple but educational. The pictures are beautiful & engaging. My 6-year-old just learned about butterflies at school & was so excited to get this book at the book fair.

excellent picture Illustrated book describing the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Just kind of surprised they don't use the word "cocoon" or "metamorphosis"

Nonfiction/ Twin Text Entry #3

The nonfiction book Caterpillar to Butterfly is an informational book about the steps of how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. This book shows the process of how a caterpillar develops into a butterfly. In addition the book provides information about different types of butterflies and poisonous caterpillars. The book provides details in an age appropriate and easy to understand way with great graphics and colors.

I paired this book with the realistic fiction book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic story about a caterpillar forming into a butterfly. The book starts when a caterpillar hatched from a tiny egg and was very hungry. Page by page the caterpillar eats through more and more food and is still hungry. At the end of the story, the caterpillar is finally full, made a cocoon around himself. The caterpillar stayed in his cocoon for more than two weeks and then pushed his way out to find he is a beautiful butterfly. The book uses great use of colors and pictures. Each picture that the caterpillar ate through had a little hole in the page where the fruit was to make it seem more lifelike for the children reading the book.

These two texts go well together because both books portray how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. The students will be able to distinguish the similarities as well as the differences between the two books. The Very Hungry Caterpillar book is an easy read storybook that pulls in the concepts of the nonfiction book, Caterpillar to Butterfly.

These two books are targeted to primary students from preschool to first grade because of the simple vocabulary and sentences as well as the use of colors and pictures. In addition, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book that can be used for learning colors and how to count. This twin text pair would be used when teaching elementary school students about the transformation process from a caterpillar to butterfly.

This book will take student through every process of the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. This book was very interesting with excellent graphics showing every detail of the process. I would use this book in a science class as it is a very easily understood book showing the transformation. I recommend this book to parents who have their own butterfly nest (which you can order online) so your children can see what will happen to their caterpillar as it transforms!

This book takes the students through every process of the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. This book was very informative, but it was also easy to understand. The accompanying pictures were really detailed, and will help walk the student through this complicated process. I would definitely use this book in a science class as a tool to teach the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly.
