I've read all of Linda Calvey's books, and enjoyed every one of them. This one, 'Charity', is the best of them all. Three sisters, Faith, Hope and Charity, along with family and close friends hatch a plan to destroy Fred Walton, Faith's biological father. He's a violent thug, a murderer, and a danger to all women who have the misfortune to enter his world. The plan is well thought out, and successful. Fred is not the cleverest of people, and likes to pretend that he's a better villain than he really is. After the trial, Fred is told the whole story of what had transpired over the years, and he realises that he's in serious trouble, and not only from his fellow inmates, but also from those to whom he owes lots of money. There's a change in fortune for the sisters and their mother. The family grows, and Maria's life is beginning to take an upward turn.
A really gripping, unputdownable novel. Linda Calvey doesn't sugar things up. Having experienced a lot of bad times herself, these events are realistically incorporated in her novels. She's easily as good a writer as Jessie Keane and Martina Cole, in my opinion.
