a candy-colored wet dream.

Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa certainly have big eyes when it comes to breasts. titties, titties, everywhere (and not a drop to drink? sorry.) - this book is an ode to them, bursting out and barely covered and fully bared, depending on the panel. the vibrant, often kaleidoscopic art dazzles the eye with its erotic slant on otherwise Disney-esque illustrations. the artists definitely have a singular and very striking way of visualizing their story!

well, what little story that is actually present. it's a mildly fun and paper-thin adventure with a good helping of darkness and blood to cut the sugariness. the "Sky Doll" in question escapes her drone-like existence washing spaceships (guess what she washes them with) by stealing aboard a spaceship whose crew of two are on a mission to further the goals of some far-flung and sexed-up version of the Catholic Church. adventures ensue, in particular on a planet of only women who worship Gaia and like to romp around topless, like most women in this dizzy future.

it's all quite stupid, like it was written by a pre-teen with one thing on their mind.

ironically enough, despite the constant lasciviousness, the story is actually really chaste. zero sex occurs. an odd sort of future for an odd sort of book!

despite the vivid art popping out all over the place, this would normally be an Eh? Eh! 2 star read for me. however this collection's final - and lengthy - section is actually an assortment of homages to Sky Doll from various artists. and there's some truly amazing art in that section. probably the only reason why I'd hold onto this. that, and the book's slightly interesting engagement with/parody of Faith, God, and that eternally burning question "Why do we even exist?"

Oba spolu mnoho let pracovali u Walta Disneye a v roce 1997 spolu byli u vzniku populární série W.I.T.C.H. Získala také několik komiksových cen - "Best series of the year", "Best art and colors" a "The Albert Uderzo Prize for Young Talent".

Hlavní série má tři alba a prequel.

¡LEEDLO! :)

The artwork in this book is simply stunning some of the best I've ever seen infact (it's almost like reading an adult version of Disney film) and the story is such a fun sci-fi romp with deep looks into power and religion too. I was so close to giving it 5 stars that is until I discovered it ends on a cliff hanger when it's supposed to be the complete series.

Please note that I will reading the other installments in the Sky Doll series regardless of what I think of this book.

Sky Doll is an interesting thing when you hear about it. An alternative universe where a planet is ruled by a female pope who legalizes sex robots called sky dolls and the world's response to that action combined with the desire of Noa, one of the sky dolls, to figure out why she has memories and autonomy unlike her sisters. Religious warfare, bodily and mental (and perhaps even spiritual) autonomy, media manipulation, and the long discussed division between flesh and spirit collide in this vibrant, charming space opera. Overall, this first batch of comics had some interesting ideas going on that resulted in an okay execution.

The best thing about these comics is the art. Barbucci and Canepa draw and color really expressive characters and aesthetically pleasing buildings and environments and clothing (from the skimpy to the regal); all in a fun sci-fi-based package. The colors really set the tone and mood of every panel.
Typical blue or magenta, these colors could convey stress, joy, love, and danger in such smooth ways. The way some of the comic panels were set up were kind of confusing sometimes, they didn't always immediately read left-to-right but I was able to work around that. The size of the panels were also something that needed attention. Perhaps this is just different with Italian and other European comics, but in an American comics when something big is revealed or when something shocking happens the panel is typically most or all of the page. In Sky Doll, this isn't done. Big or shocking things, like Noa discovering Jahu's sky doll in his room or Cleo's dance, are done in little panels. Again, I do not know if this was just Barbucci and Canepa's personal preference or, again, something with Italian comics but it just lessened the impact.

The other thing worth discussing the world building; it excelled sometimes and other times was stunted. For example, we know that the planet Papathea (interesting name if you break it down) was once ruled by two papessas (female popes): Ludovica, representing the flesh, and her sister Agape, representing the spirit. However, some form of unknown internal struggle occurred and Ludovica did away with Agape leading to the former becoming papessa and legalizing the sky dolls. The sky dolls are then used by men to satiate their sexual desires because the argument is that they are not real women and therefore no real act of sexual intercourse occurs; this is never shown on page, just implied as the comic is fairly sexless. The aftereffect of this is that real women in Papathea are forced to wear long, concealing garments that hide their body, even little girls. This is a development that is both told and shown, however, something is still lacking. What does the religion of Papathea believe in? What is it's theology? Do they believe in some sort of God(s) or is the papessa their object of worship, somewhat similar to how the Romans deified their emperors? Are flesh and spirit seen as divisive force in this world? We see that somewhat in Noa's self journey and the rivalry between Ludovica and Agape. Why does the church of Papathea have a female head, even two at one point, but the rest of the clergy is all male? Simply basing the religion's image and actions on Catholicism does not satisfy because the comic's world is one where Catholicism does not exist and thus the religion needs some fleshing out. On the other hand, the religion of Aqua, based on a combination of Buddhism and Scientology, is more fleshed out despite having a one chapter appearance.

There's some interesting things here but they lack detail. It feels as if the authors were passionate about this project but were so passionate that they overlooked the final produce. Perhaps the additional stories and Sudra will explain some things.

This seems like something that could have run in Heavy Metal back in the 80's or so. It's science fiction, a theocracy based loosely on the Catholic Church. There used to be two co-rulers, Ludovica and Agape, but something happened to Agape--it's implied that she's dead, or at least some characters believe so, and her followers are now considered blasphemers. Ludovica is working to purge them and consolidate her power. Most of the female characters are young and beautiful and appear topless at least once. Yeah, that made me roll my eyes too. It smacks a great deal of fan service. Our titular (tee hee) heroine, Noa, is a doll, an android of a type generally regarded as a sexbot by the general populace. There's something different about her, though. She has a mind of her own, and winds up hitching a ride with Roy and Jahu, a couple of guys on a mission, and is soon on an adventure that seems tied up with the future of the papacy.

If you can get past the gratuitous boobage, this is a fun book. The female characters are generally more empowered than the artwork would suggest at first glance. There's a fair amount of humor to the story, too. Both Barbucci and Canepa have extensive Disney experience, and it shows. The artwork definitely shows animation experience. It reminded me a bit of Rock and Rule, an early animated feature from Canada's Nelvanna Studios, as well as the cartoons of Asaph Fipke (Stormhawks, League of Super Evil) that I've seen on Cartoon Network over the years. There are more volumes planned for this series, and I'm curious to see where they go with it. If you can look past the cheesecake surface, this isn't a bad little series. Check it out.

This is my second time owning Sky Doll, which I bought erroneously believing to contain the fourth chapter in the series. Sadly, it does not, and though I felt a little burnt by my misinformed purchase, it does include a bit of prequel content that was not only fun, but totally informative to the narrative of the included first three chapters. Sky Doll is still beautiful, and moving, with some really wonderful world building and a passionate critique of modern religions. The translation is acceptable, but not particularly localized in a meaningful way. The dialogue communicates, without really shining on its own. It's plainly obvious that this is a translated book, and it stands out now more than it did during my first reading. Still, this is the edition to buy, until volume four finally hits state-side.

Sky Doll is a messy work that has seemingly no idea what it wants to be and as a result, it tries to be too many conflicting ideas at the same time, none of which work together.

Sky Doll's original premise, and the first pages, hint at a suggestive story and artwork that aim to please the eye, but already in the intro the authors are quoted saying how we the people are slaves to the church and Disney, which is a whiplash so immediate it sends you reeling from the get-go. So, apparently the dolled up dolls have much, much more than one would think, but hey, there they are, at the carwash, and here comes the church. It maintains the odd balance for the beginning, missionaries going to a car wash, the goddess being a sham made by a corporation, etc., until it starts to really fall apart. The allure is replaced by heavy handed commentary, there are schemes within schemes, a goddess is missing and there are other peoples in the universe. And the occasional boob.

Later on the story, which remains unfinished here, spirals out of control with riots, bloodbath, fanaticism and flirtation that mix like oil and water. The worldbuilding, while trying to do much, feels incomplete and shallow. It is not as much of an iceberg that reveals only the topmost details of its world but puddle that has gathered a mixture of dust on top of it while you can still see the gravel beneath it.

The artwork is detailed and expressive and features occasional diamonds, and no, even the ones that try not to charm you, but especially towards the end I found it too busy, filled with details so minute that it begun to get difficult to make out what it was trying to portray. Combined with the confusing story of revolutions, bloodbath, miracles and miracle manufacturers, the non-ending could have not come soon enough.

The end result is an undignifed meh, an attempt to say so much without succeeding in any of it, and when followed by a "prequel" that introduces the carwash and the oh so enticing dolls working there, it felt like an unintentional parody.

!-> I WANT MORE SKYDOLL <-!

It's just so FUN with it's goofy characters and situations. Even though it doesn't make my erotic shelf it's also very SEXY.

The art is a bit bulbous but it works beautifully. I love the wide range of females- it's not all dolls and you get many species too.

This is a very strange story, but even though Noa is a Doll, and therefore over sexualized, I just loved her and found her adorable. The colors and artwork are stunning, and this is for mature audiences. I want to know what happens next!

I'm not going to rate this yet because I'm going to read it again. I got too excited when it came in and read too fast...
I enjoyed this. It's the kind of sad that makes your heart feel heavy and the light moments were trying to draw your attention away from the dark and grittiness of the book.
I also see why it was deemed controversial There's religious oppression, assault, war, and nudity all rolled into one.
The art is really stunning though. I feel like each frame was carefully thought out and put together. The colors used brought individuality to each character, and even though their an alien race, they still felt real and tangible.

Okay. So I read this for a second time and enjoyed it much more than the first. The nudity is less distracting from the story and despite having tons of boobies its not horribly sexual. I mean, its teased, but never fully exposed. The story shined through brighter, and was much more enjoyable to read. I understood the plot better too.
It also gave me a chance to really sit back and think about each character and how the story is told through them. They all have backstories waiting to be revealed and different thoughs and feelings.
I just have to read the rest.! I need to know what happens to Noa!

I was looking for this volume in Italian but it's been out of print for ages and I couldn't get it second-hand. Then I found an English used edition and I bought it.

First things first: this book needed an editor. Badly. There are tons of typos and it's such a shame for such a beautiful hardcover volume.

I completely agree with Bucletina: the quality of the art deserves at least ★★★★★. But the story wasn't that interesting and so, in the end, this is a ★★★ book.

I mean, the art and the colors are fantastic. I like the contrast between the pink tones and the grey tones of the society in the background. I like the strokes and the shapes, which are mostly round.

The story, however, is a complete different thing. There's religion involved. Tons of religion. Words are destroyed in the name of religion. There is a papessa and a dead sort of goddess that people keep worshipping, much to the papessa's dismay. Still there are only three volumes and the story is left there with no real ending and no real explanations. There should be a fourth volume coming out in French on the 15th of June 2016.

I really like Noa as the main character. Still we know too little about her and I feel there are too many details missing for me to be able to get a complete feeling of her. Too bad. Roy is good, too.

The gallery at the end of the volume didn't impress me too much and I didn't know most of the artists who were inspired by Sky•Doll. Volume #0 kind of hints at the origin of Noa, while Heaven Dolls... Well, it seems that the authors are making fun of the readers presenting a whole gallery of dolls full of flaws. Not sure I want such dolls aroung my place.

Well, I may try to read volume #4 in French soon.

This...hit me in the childhood a little bit. The art looked so familiar and I couldn't place it until I looked up the artists. This was made by the same people who drew the "W.I.T.C.H." Disney comics years ago. I think I was around 10 or 11 when I got into that series. Same art style but this is not for kids. It's very sexual, has many hidden messages. It talks about the different kind of loves out there and even talks about religion. The artwork is beautiful but if you're not the kind of person who can handle very sexual situations and some blasphemy , its not for you.

Wow. This graphic novel...deals with A LOT of issues.

It reflected plenty of society's current concerns -- themes such as slavery, feminism, rape, objectification of women, religion etc. were all represented in this story.

It was a lot to take in, I have to say. Even I could not comprehend everything that went on in there. Brilliant artwork though, and well fleshed-out characters. However, there seemed to be a little problem with continuity at certain parts, or maybe it was just me.
