You finally have the perfect outfit and accessories and you get yourself zipped up in your shiny polyester uni-suit with the jet pack, the tall boots and the full utility belt. You look amazing! Perfect! You pull your hood up and put your helmet on. You step into the hallway, strut through the admiring crowds of con-folk ...and now you have to pee.
Surviving Your Own Creativity by Tonya Adolfson is a spectacular book about costuming and anything that has to do with the materials, patterns, weapons, wigs, etc. It has everything you need to make you look and feel awesome in a cost-play outfit that will serve it's purpose and let you love it. Surviving Your Own Creativity is very easy to follow and has great humor and excellent pictures throughout the book. I especially love the part where Tanya says: “remember no matter what, you do have to go to the girl’s room some time on that day and you need to use it with your costume on” I actually never thought of that, but how insightful it is, especially for someone that is new to cost-playing. Yet that need can make or break that awesome costume you spent hours getting ready to wear. My favorite chapter is the one about wigs. She teaches you how to make them stay in place and not have to comb them every time you use them. I deal with elfin wigs and it is hard work trying to keep them where I want them every day the actors wear them. With Tanya’s insightful help, that is in the past and now I’ll get to enjoy even more my creations and with less work. If you are an amateur, a professional, or just want to have a special costume to last you forever, this book is a must for you. It is worth every cent from the first page to the last.
An amazing book for any costumer! Not only dose she help you understand how to make an amazing costume, but even better, HOW TO SURVIVE WEARING IT!!! Nothing was more frustrating for me in my earlier costumes then getting all dressed up and realizing I had to pee. Having to completely strip for basic needs is terrible, made even worse if you need outside help to get dressed/undressed.
Tonya's book contains many important tips from material choices to little things that make your life 100% better while in costume. This is a must read for any Cosplayer!
