Red Runs the Blood picks up right where Bright Burns the Flame left us. Lory and Khay continue their relationship but have to be even more careful because there are more eyes watching. Lory gets more adept with her magic and discovers a secret ability. Khay reveals more secrets about Ashthorn Ward but keeps his deepest secrets carefully guarded. Khay’s sister, Elina, is finally introduced. And we learn some news that had me giggling and kicking my feet.
Angelina has done it again! I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment of the Bright Burns the Flame series.
I was fortunate enough to receive a free advance copy and I am pleased to leave an honest review.

So many secrets and revelations happening, Book 2 is a perfect sequel that carries this story forward. Lory finding her little tribe, becoming more confident in the power she wields. The bond she has with Khayrivven tested. But best of all her choosing the side she belongs on and deciding what that means, book 3 cant come quick enough.

Angelina has done it again! There is no reprieve as book 2 picks up right where book 1 left off.
There are so many things I want to gush about, but I loathe to give any spoilers.
Worth it! Can't wait for the next book
Thank you for the arc, all opinions are my own.

Oh Angelina… why must you do me so dirty, but in the best possible way?!
Red Runs the Blood did not disappoint!
Angelina did a wonderful job exploring the balance of good versus evil on the broad level as well as the personal level. The tight rope Khay and Lory are having to navigate is so taunt that one wrong step in the wrong place could snap it.
The world and story is so spectacular and once again leaves me dreading the wait for book 3!
Bravo, Angelina Steffort! Bravo!

Thank you to the author for this advanced copy. This book picked right back up where book 1 left off. Honestly, I don’t even know where to start because there’s so many spoilers in my head.
Once again, I loved the tension between Khay and Lory. It pissed me off but I loved it at the same time. My man Khay still has so many secrets and trust issues. Lory was a lot more patient with him than I would have been.
This book kept my attention the entire time. So much was revealed and there’s so much I’m confused about and trying to piece together. There was one moment that I just knew was going to happen. And I loved getting those other 2 POVs 👀
While this series has a lot of similarities with some other popular books, this one feels very unique and fresh. I loved it and I’m ready for book 3!

SIX STARRRSSS!!
THIS SERIES. THESE CHARACTERS. THIS WORLD.
OBSESSED DOESN'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO WHAT I FEEL FOR THESE BOOKS!
This world just pulls me under and locks me in. I cannot get enough of it! I really enjoyed the 1st book Bright Burns the Flame and the second book DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
This book pulls you in from the moment you start the book. I completely immersed in this book from chapter 1. The world is only beginning but it is already so rich in EVERYTHING. the culture, the people, the environment, the kingdom, the MAGIC, EVERYTHING is so well written!
This book start from where we left off in the first book and from that moment you are swept up into a story woven in everything you love!
Again, I am a big sucker for academy settings and this book is perfection in that part. I love that Lory still is going to classes and is still learning. I really enjoy that she wants to learn. I think she has grown a lot and is very adaptable to her environment. I love that about her but also love that she is still very new to everything and does her best. There is so much to unpack with the way Lory's life is going and I can't wait to be apart of that!
Her relationship with Khayriven Falcrest(you have to say his whole name) is one for the ages. I still absolutely love him and love the extra POVs from his point of view. EVERYTHING he does for Lory is amazing, really like that he goes out of his way to train her, or at least mostly train her but also protect her behind the scenes, which in turn makes her stronger, I think. I know there is more to him and I cannot wait to get to know more about him and his past.
We finally get to meet Khay's sister, which I was so excited about!
AND THAT CHAPTER.. IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW. (ACTUAL SCREAMING OF PURE EXCITEMENT!!!)
Again, this book is EVERYTHING YOU NEED! This series is wonderful and one you should read!
I cannot wait for the next book and to dive deeper into this world that consumes me so much!
Thank you Angelina J. Steffort and her team for allowing me to receive this ARC early. All thoughts and opinions are my own!

Beware this is captivating! Some of the magic systems, mind powers, must have absorbed on page, literally could not stop thinking about it whenever I had to set it down to perform life. This was just a fantastic sequel, even better than the first- the character development and the way the world expanded but stayed consistent was top notch.
I love how it felt like we got glimpses of answers and understanding while simultaneously developed twice as many questions. The plot is plotting and the romance is authentically divine. It has mentor/mentee , forbidden romance, fated romance like all rolled into a cute but complicated package. The characters are mature and that is a refreshing trope. I’m genuinely invested in not only the main but also the side characters. This is found family done so well. The politics, secrets, history, bonds and magics - has all the synapses in my brain firing trying to figure it out, anyone who enjoys that will completely eat this up.
Just outstanding, I loved every minute of this and anxiously await the next installment!

I read this whole book in less than a day. The first word ghat comes to my mind is- electrifying! This is one of the best sequels I have read, and believe me when I say I only put it down so I could run to the bathroom. The plot development is out of this world, especially with an epic reveal that made my jaw drop. Angelina made each character come to life, brought more magic, raised the stakes and gave us more Khay,
Lory is still one of my favorite FMC’s, she holds herself with so much strength and determination, she’s truly a character to follow. I loved seeing her grow more into her powers, and build confidence as she discovers new gifts. My favorite thing about how is how protective she is of her friends, there’s no question she would face punishment or even burn the world down if it meant her new family would be protected. Lory is building the flames of rebellion and I cant wait to see her unleash her wrath.
One word….Khayrivven. I asked for more Khay, and Angelina delivered. I really enjoyed reading the chapters in his perspective, it was a needed element that made this book even better. There is one thing for sure, Khay’s protectiveness of Elina and Lory has no limits. I do want to see more of Khay’s flames in use, but let’s be honest, he can kick anyone’s butts without any powers. I do want to know more of his character, his past, even his time when he first came to Ashmont. The yearning between Lory and Khay is literal fire, their scenes are filled with passion without spoiling anything about them….. I knew it!
The found family was the heart of the story. There are so many relationships that I can highlight but I’ll pick a few. I love the friendship between Lory, Thal, Tabi, and Jarek, they’ve been through so much yet they remain loyal to each other no matter what. I do love the budding relationship to Hadrian, and the sisterhood between Lory and Anees. The potential traitors in the midst and death if their plans are discovered makes their bonds even stronger.
This book ended perfectly, I’ll say even cruelly knowing I’ll have to wait to read Black Bleeds the Night. With the introduction to new characters and mind blowing discoveries I am bouncing in my seat telling all my friends to read this series immediately. If you’re looking for a book that gives you lethal secrets, brutal academy, hot banter and a steamy romance - get this book now. This beautiful world is dangerous, exhilarating, and will become your next obsession. I am beyond grateful for the chance to arc read again for this series. Here’s to a romantasy that will take over your bookshelf.

Exceptional case of the first book was good, the second is BETTER! The inner workings of Ashthorn Ward are not what they appear to be. And the more Lory uncovers, the more she learns what it truly means to be flame-born in a time where magic wielders, and her kind in particular, have been hunted and hated for centuries. The extent to which the entirely human king will go to eliminate traitorous threats to his power is seemingly fathomless. Where the connections between Lory and her new friends were nearly non-existent in the first book, due to Lory’s profound lack of trust in everyone, in this second installment, those bonds are solidified and we have a much stronger connection to Lory’s accepted friends and confidants. I feel their trust in one another and protectiveness in my heart. Equally as important, the bond between Lory and Khay greatly strengthens, with all the complications of living in the most heavily patrolled military school, heartache, turmoil, struggle, and secrecy. I just KNEW this series would be great, and I am overjoyed to be proven right! Two books left in the series and they cannot come quick enough. We have fated mates, political intrigue, imprisonment and torture (off page,) hidden identities, tension and yearning, magical military academy, conspiracy, and mythical creatures. And I’d give the spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️, but this is still heavily plot forward. Five stars.

🜲 Characters 🜲
I have to say that the majority of the characters have grown on me, and I loved seeing them in the 2nd book. They've grown; they've gotten more in tune with their powers, and so many secrets have been revealed by each other! It was suspenseful. I liked the different POVs in the story; they gave me another perspective into the story, and some truths that have been pending.
⚔︎ World-Building ⚔︎
I liked the details offered to the world, and we've seen even more how cruel they can be. How the rich are having their lavish life while their people are starving, or worse.
♡ What I liked/Disliked ♡
I enjoyed the relationship between Elory & Khay a lot; it has changed so much from the first book, and so many things have come to light. I also love the friendships that are being made, and how even tho they're a small group, they're trying to change the world. Loved it! It kept me entertained from the very beginning, and it was such a change in pace and the overall vibe of the story.
🔥 Spice Level/Potential Triggers 🔥
The spice i'd say is round 3 flame peppers. There are a lot of events that may be triggering for people since it involves, battle and blood, so before picking it up, make sure to read the TWs.

4.5⭐️ I am so excited to get back into this series and Ashthorn Ward!
This book picked up right where Bright Burns the Flame left off, and there are more secrets and dangers than ever before. Seeing Lory grow into her ever-changing power and discover what side she wants to be on kept me engaged in the story from start to finish. As she learned more about the mystery of Ashthorn Ward and was put into situations that required quick action, her relationships with her found family became stronger and she figured out who she could trust.
Getting to explore the relationship between Lory and Khayrivven through each of their points of view really expanded the story. Angelina’s intentional POV choices added to the story, creating intrigue and insights that were critical to the story, while also creating more questions that I cannot wait to continue reading the series to find out the answers.

4.5 stars rounded up
I took my time reading this one because I was not ready for it to end. I had a feeling it would either completely wreck me or leave me with a million questions... and I was right.
Honestly, giving away any detail would spoil the magic, but I have to talk about a few things:
The Dynamic: Enemies by day, lovers by night. The FMC and MMC’s relationship went to a whole new level, and I am obsessed. And when... 🫦.... 🫠 I saw the signs.... but like ahhhh!
The Found Family: Ugh, my heart. After a life spent solo, seeing the FMC finally get real friends. I still can't believe how things went for Aiden in book one and the massive role his death plays here in book two.
The plot: the answers in this book was everything...even if those answers made her world infinitely more confusing.
I am so ready to see how her role as THE FLAME truly takes shape in book three! 🔥

The Truth Slowly Exposed
After Lory's trial in the mountains, more than just her power is exposed.
As she returns to Ashthorn Academy and has climbed the ranks, Lory learns more about her powers, her strength, and just how closely she is tied to the prophecy Khayrivven's father predicted years ago.
But after fighting to survive, Lory now must learn to how far she is willing to go to protect what she has gained, even killing for it if it comes to that point.
Red Runs the Blood is a compelling sequel to Bright Burn the Flame, a series set in Steffort's Alcunaire world. A great read for magic lovers, those that enjoys low burns, and ponder how a prophecy slowly takes shape.

4.25 stars! Thank you Angelina for this ARC, I was so excited to jump back into the world of Ashthorn Ward with Lory and Khay! Lots of twists and turns in this one, and I just love how the found family grows throughout! It is an excellent balance between action and romance, and I really enjoyed the extra POV chapters. It is slightly slower paced, but the secrets and stress of not knowing who to trust kept me on the edge of my seat. There is so much story building in this book that really immersed me in the world, I cannot wait to see how it all comes together in book 3!!

Thank you to the author for the ARC.
This book picks up right where the last book ended. It did take me a little longer to get back into it, but once you do, you’re right back in the world.
Lots of yearning/tension from Khay and Lory ❤️🔥🔒
Really liked the multiple POV’s- this book is definitely more character driven. Slightly slower pace but so much happened!
Then ending! Ahh! Thankfully not a brutal cliffhanger but a cliff for sure. Patiently waiting for the 3rd installment.

This just keeps getting better and better! There were so many scenes that had me on the edge of my seat because I didn’t know what would happen next. There is almost non stop action. And Khay and Lory 🔥. I just love how their relationship is developing. And that last chapter and how it ended gave me the chills. I cannot wait for the next book!

3.75⭐️ for this one! I was blessed to receive an early eARC of this one.
The story progresses much better in this book! I was hooked wondering where we were going next.
We have multiple POVs and I enjoy seeing all the various thoughts as well as trying to solve more of the secrets and mysteries within this story.
The training continues but progresses even more for all our school members as well as more real missions.
Our love story continues to increase in this one and I was def ready for that to happen!

Um excuse me…what?!?!
5/5 stars because I still can’t stop thinking about THAT plot twist.
Red Runs the Blood sets a lot of things in motion for the following books, but it didn’t fall victim to the ‘curse of the second book’.
It never felt boring, or like nothing was happing while the rest of the books were getting their set up.
Lory’s going through some stuff (can’t say what of course😉), Khay has some trust issues, and we’re introduced to some new character POVs.
And let me tell you, these new POVs are EVERYTHING.
The way I screamed at them in a WHAT THE HELL?! - in the absolute best way.
I was emotionally damaged. I’m excited. I have no idea who to trust. I NEEED Black Bleeds the Night.
Um excuse me…what?!?!

I have to say, I liked the second book even more than the first one!!
The romance is sizzling hot, and the banter is absolutely there!! I loved Khayrivven and Lory together, although at times, I just wanted to yell at them to talk to each other!! But, I feel that was very much intentional, as their behavior, and their relationship were very much true to their personalities and surroundings, and I love that it was written that way!!
I also loved Khayrivven in this book!! He is way more open here, and we kinda get to know him a lot more. The first book really just scratched the surface when it comes to his character! I loved how the romance progressed in this book towards one of my absolute favorite tropes (not revealing it though).
Lory's character growth was beautiful!! I really loved the beginning of this book, and the choice she made, it was very natural to me. I am expecting many more things to happen in following books!!
I also loved the side characters, they were so well written and absolutely made me pay so much attention to them! That being said, I am really excited to learn more about characters whose POVs were new in this book, and just to see where their story goes!!
I am very thankful to the author for providing me with the opportunity to read this book early as an eARC!! I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series!!
Tropes:
•forbidden romance
•mentor x mentee
•hot banter
•lethal secrets
•he falls first and hard
•brutal academy
•deadly trials

I did not think it was possible to like book two more than book one, but here we are. Red Runs the Blood is everything I love in a book. The storyline picks up right where we left Lory in Bright Burns the Flame. And when I tell you this book grabs hold of you from the very beginning and leaves you struggling for breath by the end....well that's no joke!
In Red Runs the Blood there is just so much MORE. More of Lory and Khayrivven's relationship developing into something deeper. More insight to Lory’s magic and possible new powers that are coming to light. More about the side characters, that at this point are really not side characters at all. I found myself so invested in them and their stories and abilities too. And we finally get to see Khayrivven's sister, Elina, and more of her back story and how her life has evolved inside of King Ulder's castle walls. We also find out more secrets that are hidden within Ashthorn Ward and the consequences that they cause. And finally, the ending to this book....the word MORE does not describe it! Maybe MORE surprises is a better fit for the end. PLEASE HURRY WITH THAT THIRD BOOK!! I cannot wait!!
Thank you to Angelina J Steffort for gifting me the ebook of Red Runs the Blood in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Angelina Steffort for the opportunity to read this ARC!
Red Runs the Blood is very emotional piece. The characters are dealing with denial, acceptance, and secret rebellions. I loved how we got to see Lory go on more missions and learn more about the secret histories the monarchy has rewritten. In this book we got to experience more of how Khay operates within his given parameters. I thought it was particularly interesting how he treated Lory in this book. He was hot and cold and my heart was lowkey breaking for her at times. I think this was a great sequel and definitely leaves questions that will keep you invested in the series!
In the aftermath of the trials in the Amrin mountains everyone’s fate is unknown. Lory is torn between the flameborn and Khayrivven. Once back at Ashthorn Ward, tensions rise and Lory discovers there are even more layers to Khay’s secrets. Lory is fighting a constant battle against her feelings for him. Her loyalty to the king gets put to the test and she has to decide if she will accept the role she has in the prophecy.

From my very first Angelina read, I was smitten! There are few authors that can toss my emotions quite like this author. She drives, she pries, she annihilates, she decimates, she shatters and then slowly, oh so slowly, glues me back together, one cell at a time. This is called "The Angelina effect".... This book, I think, impossibly, is even better than Bright Burns the Flame! It's cut throat on a whole new level, with more hope and light slowly pushing out the darkness. From the very powerful start to the book, anguish, confusion and a healthy dose of action, pulled me right in. The frustration oozing from Lory is almost tangible, her irritation, dispels any fear she might have of this scary beast, the leinthor, which would be quite comical if her situation wasn't so dire. My word, the action in the cave was so unexpectedly earthshattering!
ALL the emotions bombard me big time! I love the way Ms Steffort "separates" Khay the caring, with Khay the instructor. I'm completely, utterly in love with Khay! When he finally "gave" in, when he finally admits, “I’m hopeless when it comes to you, Lory. You’re the beginning and the end of my universe." I just melted into a puddle by his feet! What an enigma he is, so much depth to him, so much conflict in him! So much love that he cannot express, which Angelina conveys superbly, just by her evocative prose. He tears me apart! Lory is a super strong character too, I adore seeing her growth and coming into her powers. Absolutely stunning to see her evolvement! I love Lory's feistiness, her attitude, her sense of right. And the friendships she forges in the deadliest of places, the best found family. This book is so addictive, I'm utterly riveted! The emotional tug of war is off the charts and I adore how the author "fills" in the characters as the story progresses.
I really am obsessed with Khay and Lory, I can feel the conflict in them, every gesture, every glance, every vulnerability, every stance portrays that splendidly, that only a true master can pen as Angelina does, she titillates, tantalises so much, I don't want to stop reading! The tension and drama is awesome, the intrigue, the suspense, is phenomenal, excellently spun, it kept me guessing throughout. The entire plot is brilliant. I'm sure you figured out that I'm as obsessed with these 2 as I am with Myron and Anya! I don't know how she do it, but every character, every book of hers I've read, is a dream character. And so different to any of her other characters. All spectacularly unique. So easy to love, like Anees and Hardian! He makes me laugh with his self confidence and coyness, he's like a breath of fresh air in this deadly environment And I love them all! And I'm gushing... Have I gushed enough? No... not nearly enough...
The sexual tension between Lory and Khay is hot hot hot but it's evolved, it's a beautiful love that's emerging, unfolding like a butterfly from a cocoon. It's sensuality wrapped up in yearning, so fierce, butterfies are playing havoc with my tummy. The hot scenes between Khay and Lory are as tender as they are spicy, really exceptional! My word, they could ignite a pyre from the heat they emanate! My heck, I grin every time Khay "doesn't" get jealous. “Tell me that having him touch you is as torturous to you as watching it is to me.” Khay destroys me, no, let me rephrase that, the author destroys me...with every stroke of her pen, the nib burrows deeper and deeper in me. I feel every torturous moment Khay has, his duplicity weighing so heavily on him, carrying out deeds he finds abominable, all while keeping his secret agenda hidden. This outwardly ruthless man is so tortured and so clandestinely in love with Lory, he nearly shattered my heart when he hurt Lory, uttering words he felt he had to, I honestly wanted to wrap my arms around him. Trapped within a trap, within a trap by the vile ministrations of an even more vile Ulder, Khay couldn't be more caged in.
But frek a duck and a brick and just about anything I was NOT expecting the HUGE... surprise that knocked me off my feet! The author knows EXACTLY how to drop a bombshell, so brilliantly executed, I'm gobsmacked! This book is so heart in throat, almost constantly, and I flipping love that! It's like Ms Steffort have a magic wand to make everything she writes, perfectly interwoven into my heart. She have really given the characters, the fabric of this world, life, love and a complexity that shouts off the pages. What she does, is elevate every book, to make it compelling, to imbue it with a special kind of awesome that I'm captivated from start to finish, always leave me wanting more...
This book, amazingly is EVEN BETTER than book 1! This brilliant author has injected drama and tension seamlessly, added even more angst, more revelations and more pizzazz to the story! All the unexpected had my brain frazzled, Jerek was a complete surprise, and Brycon, good gracious, I'm always gobsmacked at how Ms Steffort turns it around. Twists? Nah...corkscrews that are so firmly wedged, it's impossible to collect myself! Every character has such a strong voice, I know exactly who's who, although, the author does a spectacular job of keeping much hidden, so when she does reveal something, my jaw drops! She not only manages to evoke the strongest feelings and emotions in me (and the cast) the action scenes are are incredibly alive, raw, vivid and darn right adrenaline pumping. This is a series that's so explosive and riveting and immersive and unputdownable!

July 29, 2026Layer by layer veils hiding secrets about Ashthorn Ward, the Great Purge and who Khayrivven truly is are peeling away. Ashthorn Ward isn’t just a secret academy for children from wealthy families who have magical blood lines. It is a training ground to weed out those that might be controlled, to fight in King Ulder’s war against the Criu, the rebels who would take back their freedom and their territory. It is also to route out those with magical gifts who would rebel against King Ulder and join the rebels. However, Ulder’s real fear was another uprising of the Flame-born. Thousands of years ago there was peace between those with magic and the non-magically gifted until King Ulder’s ancestors found a traitor that would wield the power to help them overtake Criulias and destroy the Flame-born in order to bring all of Brestoyla under their rule. The leonthor, the beast who had aided the magical people, had been betrayed and all but destroyed, long thought to be a myth but banished to Amrin Mountains with the loss of its ability of flight.
Twenty years ago, Khayrivven’s father, a seer, prophesized that a Flame-born would come. She would be the savoir or the downfall of her people, but she had to choose. Lory is believed to be the Flame in the prophecy. King Ulder and his council would control her or kill her. It was in a battle in Amrin Mountains, with her fellow students hunting her to kill her that the leonthor found her. Wanting her to stay with the Flames still free, to fight with them. Lory’s need to get back to Ashthorn wouldn’t let her listen to the leonthor’s words. Her fear was for Khayrivven if she didn’t return to Ashthorn, he would be killed. When he, along with the General Yuken, found her with the flames, she left the leonthor and rebels behind.
With Lory’s return, she is beginning to notice things that aren’t in line with what she was told about Ashthorn Ward’s reason for training students. Things are changing at Ashthorn, Lory can’t be controlled to blindly follow, layer by layer the veils are dropping from the secrets they hide. Lory is asking questions, she needs to learn the true history of the Great Purge when all magic was forbidden. Khayrivven, is a Flame-born, the Veiled Hand, has betrayed his people, become an assassin for the King, to protect his sister. As Lory gets closer to him, she learns he has committed atrocious acts in the name of the King but he is so much more then the assassin he has become. There is a full cast of characters with stories that fill this dark tale with twists and turns. There is treachery, murder, mystery, and drama, loss of beloved characters and there is love, bravery beyond compare, a myth whose story could change their world or destroy it and a young woman who must choose who she will stand behind.
For me it was a readers dream and a researcher’s delight. Angelina J. Steffort has elements that had me chasing down strategies for training in battles, fighting moves that sounded familiar and had me delving into information about them (i.e parkour), mythical characters that could be cousins to classical beasts and the layered secrets that brought to my mind “the dance of the seven veils”. She has pulled from her unbridled imaginative storytelling to give us her leonthor, the beast’s appearance and unique storylines. This series is wholly her’s with elements reminiscent of classic old folklore, characters that have their own tales, beliefs and are definitely anti-heroes, but not always by choice. Perhaps one of my favorite characters is the leonthor, I have a love of beasties. He is so beautifully scripted his appearance, his story and best of all the syntax he uses. It sent me hunting for information about the way he speaks. Friendships in most cases develop sometimes slowly and a few begrudgingly. However, the romance between Khayrivven and Lory is a deep entangled tale, at times heartbreaking, frustrating, and spicy. There is so much to love, to fear and cry over in this story. I find myself counting the weeks until the next book will be available, a total of four it looks like, there is so much to learn and follow.
I highly recommend this haunting tale that takes you on a dark journey with a cast of characters that had me caring about them in spite of my first impressions. I found myself wrapped up in their secrets, waiting to see how they might change as the story evolved on the pages, while abiding love, friendships, distrust and sometimes hatred wove itself through the story along with the true villains dogged their heels. And a book that should never gather dust on a shelf.

I wanted to put my thoughts into something coherent and that other readers could understand. But after finishing, I was left with just so much buzzing around in my head but at the same time a little empty now that I have finished it. I savored this book for as long as I could!
Red Runs the Blood makes you feel!! Without spoiling, there are scenes that leave your jaw on the ground, scenes that make you want to pummel someone (actually, many someone's at many different times, including my beloved Khay!), times when you're on the edge because you're certain Lory can't trust anyone but desperately hold onto hope that her new found family and closest friends are really going to stand by her side once they finally know more, and there are times when you're anxious she and Khayrivven will get caught during those all too brief moments when they finally find themselves alone. I was so happy when they could finally reunite (even in dream state)..There's questionable loyalty, impending fear of betrayal, moments of hope and joy, moments of sadness and frustration. And one of my favorite moments of this book which gave my heart a full jolt when the impossible seemed to happen (about 30% in.. IYKYK!). And to think, Lory doesn't even know?!
RRtB has all the things you need a fantasy romance book in an academy setting to have - action, brutal training, undeniable found family, suspense, secrets, hidden agendas, forbidden romance, longing and yearning..
This series is one of the best ~ brutal academy setting with enemies-to-lovers tropes ~ I've ever read!
This might be the most chaotic review I've ever written. No eloquence, no flashy or flowery words. Just my mind throwing out scenes, thoughts and feelings that I'm trying to desperately form into something that makes sense to tell other readers about the awesomeness of this book!
Favorite scenes and quotes (may contain spoilers):
~ How could someone be so skilled and beautiful, yet be such a dick?
~ "Field experience is overrated."
~ "The Amrin Mountains taught me that I'm not alone."
~ "Dance with daggers"..."I like that. We should make it a thing."
~ Lory was a gem. A gem he found in the gutters of this sun-beaten city. A gem for whom he'd risked far more than his reputation to retrieve, and for whom he'd put his life on the line to keep. His own, personal heist.
~ How could walking away from someone feel so wrong when self-preservation demanded she run?
~ "You said no." "And you can't have it both ways."
~ "You're the beginning and the end of my universe. Without you, what I've been fighting for means nothing."
Thank you to the author for this e-ARC. I'm so honored to have been able to read it early!

When I tell you Red Runs the Blood is a perfect (IMHO) example for every other book 2 in a series to follow, I absolutely mean it. We get more political intrigue, new characters introduced, more world building for our MCs, new members added to the found family list, more spicy times, more revelations and more badass-ness from Lory and friends. 10/10 recommend!!
We pick up where we left off in Bright Burns the Flame. Our FMC Lory is out on the mountain, trying to survive, not only the creatures on the mountain but also the revelations that come with it.
After events transpire, she is brought back to Ashthorn to continue to her training under our MMC, Khayrivven.
According to the heads of Ashthorn, she had progressed enough in her training to go on missions with Khay to prove herself and her loyalty. The instructors are still horrid but as time goes on, their methods and movements are starting to unravel. Her new missions now bring her King Ulders ballroom.
The relationship between Khay and Lory is a battle of wills and yearning. He is broodier but also much more affectionate than he was in book 1. As events continue along, he proves, once again, why he is top tier book boyfriend material.
Watching our MCs navigate between the dangers at Ashthorn and the dangers at Court was so interesting. It was refreshing to watch an FMC not know how Court worked, trying to move like nobility but was in fact attempting to spy. This was only a small part of the overall Court story but felt like such a pivotal moment. There were so many moments throughout the story that felt like that and it kept me in it and intrigued.
I really enjoyed how book 2 was written. I kept flipping the page because I needed to know what was going through Khay and Lory’s mind. I needed to know what was happening next. I needed to know whose POV we were getting and what they had to do with the overall story.
IMHO, Red Runs the Blood is how book 2 in a series should be written. Revelations and twist/turns that keep you reading, old questions answered and new questions popping up, romance/spice turned up, more at stake for the MCs/friends, more tension and banter to revel in and a story felt hanging for book 3. This story was everything I had hoped for and more! Highly recommend!!!
If I take how I feel about Bright Burns the Flame and Red Runs the Blood, book 3 is going to take it to another level (again) and will continue to prove why this series in god tier for me.
Thank you to Angelina J. Steffort for the gifted copy. My opinions are my own, shaped by the story and shared because I believe this is a story worth telling.
We pick up where we left off in Bright Burns the Flame. Our FMC Lory is out on the mountain, trying to survive, not only the creatures on the mountain but also the revelations that come with it.

I went into Red Runs the Blood expecting an exciting dark fantasy, but I wasn't prepared for how completely it would consume me. This is one of those books that had me promising myself "just one more chapter" until I realized I'd stayed up far too late because I simply couldn't walk away from the story.
What made this book unforgettable for me was Lory and Khay.
Lory quickly became a character I deeply admired. She isn't fearless or flawless, but she's resilient in a way that feels incredibly real. Watching her navigate impossible situations while refusing to completely lose herself made me root for her every step of the way. Her strength isn't loud—it's found in the moments where she chooses to keep going despite everything stacked against her.
And then there's Khay.
He's everything I love in a morally gray hero—powerful, dangerous, fiercely protective, and carrying wounds that shape every decision he makes. It would've been easy for him to be written as just another brooding fantasy love interest, but there's so much depth beneath his hardened exterior. Every crack in his armor made me appreciate him even more, even when his choices left me frustrated.
Their relationship is what truly made this story shine. The chemistry between them goes far beyond attraction. It's built on trust that's painfully earned, vulnerability that's terrifying to share, and two people trying to find hope in a world that constantly threatens to take it away. Every conversation, every lingering glance, and every emotional breakthrough felt meaningful. I found myself smiling one chapter and completely heartbroken the next.
The atmosphere throughout the novel is dark, brutal, and immersive. There's a constant feeling that no one is truly safe, which kept me turning pages because I never knew what was waiting around the corner. Every revelation raised the stakes, and just when I thought I'd figured things out, the story surprised me again.
By the final chapters, I wasn't just invested in the plot—I was emotionally attached to these characters. I closed the book and just sat there for a while, trying to process everything I'd experienced. Those are always my favorite kinds of reads: the ones that don't end when you turn the last page because the characters stay with you long afterward.
If you love dark fantasy with emotionally complex characters, morally gray heroes, fierce heroines, dangerous magic, high emotional stakes, and a romance that feels earned through every hardship, Red Runs the Blood is absolutely worth your time. Lory and Khay completely stole my heart, and I already know they'll be living rent-free in my mind for a long time.

I received this book as an ARC copy, so all opinions and thoughts are my own. When I heard that Angelina was releasing book 2 immediately jumped on the band wagon to be on her ARC team to get a sneak peek back into the world of Lory. Red Runs the Blood continues off exactly where book 1 ends. Lory truly has a no quit attitude in every step she takes about anything. With secrets unraveling around every corner and figuring out who to trust, she gracefully takes every step with stride at every turn. Angelina has a very sneaky way of making a reader think they know what's about to happen next and then BAM you're quite wrong in the matter. She will keep you on your toes, but every chapter and every page will keep you wanting more especially with the intense amount of slow burn that she delivers with both Khayriven and Lory. Lory doesn't let who she is define her path moving forward but comes into the role she will have to play. I really took my time to read this book because I don't want to miss any important detail within the writing especially since book 3 is already in the works!.
Some quotes that were incredible that will live rent free in my heart:
"There was more about the young captain than any of the other people could ever know; a brilliant, strategic mind, a loyalty so deep it could span kingdoms. A heart so big and full of emotions that he needed to keep it locked away from the rest of the world or he'd break."
"When I look at you, I see the future of Brestolya, the freedom of my people. I see fires burning down armies, and I see light...so much light. I see my heart shredded when one day you'll wake up and realize I am not worthy of you. "
"I'm hopeless when it comes to you, Lory. You're the beginning and the end of my universe. Without you, what I've been fighting for means nothing, and I'll happily watch the world go to shit if I can have you. Maybe that makes me a monster, but you're mine, Gutter Gem. And I am selfish when it comes to you. There is no point in trying to deny it".
JUST WOW. RAW EMOTIONS THAT ARE REAL AND MEANINGFUL FROM KHAY TO LORY.

Lies, secrets, twists, turns...My head is spinning. But in a good way.
Red Runs the Blood picks up right where book one left off, finally revealing what happened to Elory after that ending. No, I'm not telling you. Spoilers are a hard no. I will say there were a lot of twists in this book that I did not see coming. Sure, I figured out a couple of them. I mean, come on, some are pretty obvious. But most of them? Not even close.
Since all of the world-building was done in book one, we can skip that part of the review. Honestly, it's usually the most boring part anyway. As always, Angelina J. Steffort's writing is descriptive while still being incredibly easy to read. It paints a vivid picture without ever slowing the story down, making it far too easy to lose track of time and read just one more chapter.
Story wise, we're still dealing with an evil king, an academy that is basically run like a house of horrors, and a group of imperfect people trying their best to make the world a better place. Keyword: trying. The story continues to focus mainly on Elory and Khayrivven, and we get to dig deeper into whatever is going on between them. The banter is still there, and I loved every bit of it. Do I wish there was more? Absolutely. But there are reasons we only get as much as we do. I'm just greedy.
We also meet a few new characters while spending more time with familiar faces. Some remain in smaller supporting roles, while others become much more important as the story unfolds. I really enjoyed getting to know them better and seeing how their stories weave into the larger plot.
And then...That ending. Again. It's not exactly a cliffhanger, but it leaves you with just enough new information that there is no possible way you're going to want to stop reading. Ugh. Now I have to wait. I don't like waiting, and I still have no idea why I keep starting unfinished series.I need book three...
...and book four...
Immediately.
