I keep coming back to this series in the hopes that the more words published might eventually equate to a better story. Alas, It just seems like they are getting worse as we go. And that makes me sad.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but one of the hallmarks of a cozy mystery is that it's the non-law enforcement person that needs to be the sleuth. In this series, All the legwork is done by the cop, and the baker just, well, bakes. It's frustrating because another hallmark of a cozy mystery is they are supposed to be character driven stories, and in this series, there is zero improvement on the characterization front.
And another thing that makes me sad with this series is that it's either feast or famine when it comes to telegraphing who done it. Either some complete random person is sprung on us in the last chapter that never had any screentime until that point, or it is so badly telegraphed that you know in chapter 2 and have to suffer through 10-12 more chapters of garbage to be told what you already know. In this book it was the latter.
While at a Cupcake Convention in Texas, Missy gets a frantic voicemail message from her friend, Echo. Back in Dellville, Missy learns that Echo is a primary suspect in a homicide. A customer at her ice cream store was poisoned. When Missy goes to Echo's bungalow to speak with her, she meets Echo's younger sister, Safflower. Unfortunately, Safflower is anything but friendly and Missy takes an immediate dislike to her. The victim, Sid Hixon, a two truck driver, was not well liked and had a reputation for having plenty of enemies.
When Missy gets a strange text from Chas, she is concerned when he picks her up, without explaining what the problem is. Arriving in Dellville, Missy finds the store completely trashed.
Who killed Sid Hixon? Why was he killed? Who trashed Missy's Dellville store? Are the two incidents related? Can Missy figure out the mystery and clear Echo?
This series is extremely well written and engrossing. Summer Prescott has a way of making her characters so life-like that they feel like close friends or true villains.
This is the first book in the series that I could see the culprit from a mile away. The murder and the reasons for the murder seemed obvious from the start which made it a little sad. The relationship between Missy and Chas in this book was a little strained but they talked it out like adult, which I liked. Though not completely realistic, being able to talk to each other about their feelings is a refreshing concept.
I did like how Safflower gave more background to Echo that we were given a few books before. I really did like the interaction and the first fight between Echo and Missy. Though they made up like old friends would.
Though Chas wasn't in the book much when he was, it was fun and quirky. He has become a lovable character that definitely had to grow on me. He has done a completely 180 when it comes to Missy which I adore. He's random thoughts popping into the story is a little distracting but fun.
Things are busy at both shops, and everyone is busy coming up with new ideas they can use as they plan to gear up for the holiday season. Missy takes Cheryl to a cupcake convention to boost her confidence but gets a strange call from Echo. When she gets back home, she finds out that Echo is suspected of murdering a customer, she also gets to meet Echo's obnoxious little sister. Missy puts up with Sunflower as long as she can but one day she just snaps and put's her in her rude little place and that's when things get complicated. Missy's Delville store is vandalized, then robbed, even Echo's store is vandalized. When Missy gets attacked things just seem to get worse, after lots of surprises, a little suspense and quite a few twists they finally uncover the murderer. Great read.
Ohh this was a good one! Poor Missy and her friend, Echo, had a rough series of events happen to them in addition to the mysterious murders that took place. I enjoyed it! And I loved Chas in this book. He’s always strong, sweet, and patient (overly patient in the relationship department, perhaps) but this story brought out some other characteristics and a teensy bit more of his background. Loved it!!
My only wish is that they would be available sooner. I’ve read all the INN redibly Sweet and Cupcakes in Paradise , that are out, and love them. I’m glad the Frosted Love series is being re-released. All are well written and fun to read. Keep them coming!
Going back to the beginning has given me a new perspective. It’s interesting to see how characters have developed.
A very unpleasant vendor has been killed with poison and it points back to Echos ice cream shop. Then a young man dies having been poisoned by one of Missy’s cupcakes. Both shops are vandalized and no one knows why. It’s out of Chas’s jurisdiction but he’s looking into things.
I love this series and both of your characters Chas and missy! I love the cozy mystery and I love the romance too! Chas and missy aren't spending time together due to both hAving busy schedules but then murder happens and craziness that Chas has to figure out and he does with missy help!
This was a nice, light ,mystery but I use the word mystery lightly. I knew who the killer was the moment they were introduced. I'm also starting to see some inconsistencies. Chas knows all about her family from book 1, so why is she explaining her story to him like he's never heard it before?
It's so much fun rereading this revised series and this book was excellent. Missy and Echo are both persons of interest in two murders. Throw Echo's snotty little sister into the mix and it turns into a real nail biter. Will Chas and Missy get to the bottom of this?
Well done. I loved the sister character so much that I really wanted to see her get life in prison without parole. And that was from just for what she said to Missy. I think I would have hit her a few times when she was young. But loved the story.
Echo is a good friend, having her little sister visit is a thorn in Missy's side. A murder, stores being vandalized, Missy gets hurt. Chas & Missy's relationship gets rocky. I copied the Orange Marmalade Cupcake recipe. Onto book 7.
Missy's friend Echo has been accused of murder. She enlists Chas's help on finding the killer. It was easy to pick out the murderer but this was still a nice read .
I enjoy all of her books, but this one in the series was exceptionally fun. I enjoyed the familiar characters. The mystery is fantastic. One question:where were the orange marmalade cupcakes? BRAVO
This series gets better as it goes along. I can see such a difference in the maturity of the authors writing. Missy and her friend Echo are caught in a murderers web of deceit. Their shops have been targeted and the police are keeping a close eye on the shops. Detective Beckett is doing what he can to help the authorities to search out the real culprit. I love the cupcake ideas that came with the books. The author included a recipe in one of her previous books and I hope that there will be more in the future.
This was another really good short from the Frosted Love Cozy series. I am enjoying these little bi-monthly vignettes based upon the cupcake shops Missy, the protagonist owns. In this one, we meet another new employee and the strange sister of her fellow sweet shop owner, Echo who owns a Vegan Ice cream parlor across the street from one of Missy's bakeries. A fun little mystery to help pass the time and keep you reading. Great for a take along for busy appointments.
I know that this series is short books but I have become fond of it. I like all the characters and the mysteries. Ok so most of the time you have an idea about who the murderer is. But just all the love of people, friends and small town families are enough to to keep me reading.
I just love this series of books with Missy and her cupcake bakery. This one was a real hair puller. Didn't figure out who committed two murders until the end and still couldn't believe it. What a hoot! You will just love this book, so dive right in and enjoy!
It's a quick read, and you just know that Missy is always spot on. Love the characters and that family feeling that they show. Hope to see Chas and Missy get engaged soon.
Trouble seems to follow Missy no matter where she goes. She seems to be a magnet for murder and vandalism but without her misfortune we wouldn't get these great stories!
Another great installment in the series. I figured out the killer pretty quickly in this one but the motive was surprising. I am looking forward to book 7.
Story wrapped up too easily. Details from other books, like Missy's past, and Chas' reaction to it, were introduced again. No clear cuts between sections, just new paragraphs.
