P.D. ¡Quiero ver más de Yukino y Arima!

4.5/5 brought down for how hard it is to tell everyone apart.
With Soichiro gone the side cast of characters gets fleshed out a bunch especially Tsubasa and Hideaki. I really LOVE how Tsuda ties this into Soichiro and Miyazawa's relationship as
The Tsubasa storyline was really good. It massively expanded the cast at its beginning with Tsubasa's friend and some spotlight on Miyazawa's friend group that was introduced previously. It also gave Tsubasa a lot more characterization as this moody, reserved, and inward individual while dealing with an interesting personal issue. I really enjoy how it was settled as well.
And it ends on an interesting mini-story that's a flashback of Miyazawa's mom and dad. I wasn't expecting a short recap of how they met and fell in love but it seems like a fun little short story that Tsuda is whipping up with those two. Miyazawa's dad is such a fun character and seeing him as a child instead of manchild was fun.
I haven't really talked about this in my reviews but the comedy is very good. Tsubasa generally stays on romance or character exploration but the sudden bursts of comedy such as with Miyazawa's Dad getting owned by his daughters lands very well or dealing with his father-in-law.
But it is very hard to tell everyone apart. There are a lot of same-y black or white hairs with long bangs. Tsuda can also draw people a tad androgynous which especially when she draws them without noses and they become what I call “egg people.” And with this and the last volume the side characters have gotten more time meaning only more faces to remember. I think she's trying to fix it a bit with Hideaki's new look and stuff but it's still a little difficult to tell certain characters apart.

It's such a heartwarming bit, and it continues on to the next volume...

Schools out and since Soichiro is going to be away competing in a kendo tournament all summer, he and Yukino have to spend some time apart. Yukino fills her days hanging out with her new friends, but then Tsubasa announces she's leaving home with plans to move in with Yukino. She's having trouble adjusting to the idea of her father remarrying, since it's always been just her and her dad.

I love Tsubasa's antics in this book. Even though she's the same age as Yukino, she's a lot smaller and acts a little immature for her age. Her dad and her new stepbrother are really cute, which helped the book a lot. Her dad is a girls' clothing designer and her stepbrother is a musician in a high school band, so I look forward to more books involving these two characters. Yukino's friends can often be more interesting than Yukino's and Soichiro's slow-moving romance...and since Soichiro was hardly in this book, there wasn't a whole lot of romance.

Kare Kano is a gut-wrenching and wild ride. If you have only seen the anime, then you are missing a lot of the meat of this story. Kare Kano follows the story of Yukino who strives to be an image of perfection. She’s beautiful, is at the top of her class, and seems naturally good at everything she tries. However, this perfection is a complete facade. Yukino’s home life reveals her to be a messy, rude, narcissist, who is obsessed with being the best. Yukino’s obsessive pursuits seem to be fueled by the praise and admiration she receives from those around her, it becomes clear that she has a crippling fear of failure. Meanwhile, her class rival, Soichiro aims for perfection for entirely different reasons. Soichiro’s perfect life aims to conceal his dark past as he tries to make up for the abuse and trauma he faced as a child. He clearly has an overwhelming fear of loss and rejection.

Throughout the story, these two characters’ lives intertwine as they learn one another’s secrets and help one another work through their problems. Each of them grows as individuals separate from one another, but they also grow as friends and eventually a couple. If you have watched the anime, then your perception of this story is probably that it is a romantic comedy. While you are not necessarily wrong, this manga reaches levels of depth and darkness that the anime definitely does not prepare you for. This story tackles topics like self-harm, suicide, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and unwanted pregnancy, and a whole slew of mental health-related issues. While the manga covers much of these topics with noticeable care and sensitivity, I will say that given that the manga ran from the mid-’90s to the early ’00s, its understanding of some of these issues can feel quite dated at times.
There are elements to this story that I think are actively harmful. Specifically, the great length’s to which Yukino attempts to heal Soichiro’s dark past. This establishes a narrative in which a woman’s strength is defined by her ability to stand by her man no matter what. Unfortunately, that kind of storytelling has real-world consequences no matter how realistic the depiction is in this case. While it is not at the forefront of the story-telling, this manga also perpetuates the idea that girls should pursue older men; that they have more to offer and are simply more suitable partners than more age-appropriate options. This is a sentiment that I absolutely do not agree with, and I believe it to be a harmful trope.

That being said, while this story is quite dark at times it has an undeniable honesty and relevancy to the narrative. In many ways, it feels realistic, even if it is uncomfortable, which is probably why so many manga readers still flock to this series years after its publication. If you liked Fruits Basket or Mars, then I think you would enjoy Kare Kano. I think Fruits Basket does a better job unpacking different kinds of trauma, especially in regards to toxic masculinity. However, for better or worse, Kare Kano never relies on metaphor or fantasy to soften the blow of hard-hitting topics and in that way feels all too real in its delivery.

Oh wow, all the new characters popping up and some good side stories are starting… I think I’m really going to like this series. It took a little to get going but it’s going now!
God, I love Tsubasa. She’s a hilarious little shortie. She reminds me of Taiga from Toradora.
And Yukino’s dad is my favorite adult so far. He’s so funny. My favorite chapter had to be his back story as a child… Absolutely hilarious!!!!

Kind of a boring volume, the character Shibahime is a lot. We learn about her backstory and her difficulty with her dad's new wife. Then we're introduced to her new step-brother who's the same age, but is in a band 😯 really missed our maim couple. Arima is in Tokyo in a sports tournament, but we don't learn much about it.

4.75 / 5.00

I really enjoyed this volume, and think it’s been my favorite so far! This series seems to touch on some pretty heavy topics in a lighthearted and hopeful way.

It was good to get some character growth from Shibahara and Asapin, but I’m really missing Soichiro! Looking forward to the next volume for sure!

I think this is the best volume so far. It was quite funny and Tsubasa's story was interesting. I also really liked her relationship with her stepbrother.

Today's post is on Kare Kano: his and her circumstances volume 5 by Masami Tsuda. It is 208 pages long and is published by Tokyopop. As it is the fifth in the long running series you need to have read the first four to understand the story. The cover has Tsubasa on it looking cute. There is no language, no sex, and no violence in this book. The story is told from the third person close of the main character Yukino. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- School's out! But since Soichiro is going to be away competing in a kendo tournament all summer, he and Yukino are forced to spend their vacation apart. (Bummer!) Will their romance be able to survive the separation? Yukino decides to spend her free time with her gal pals but soon her friend Tsubasa announces she's leaving home. Tsubasa's upset about her father's plans to get remarried, and freaks out even more when she meets her new brother-to-be. Yukino tries to be there for her friend while still nurturing her relationship with Soichiro from across the miles.

Review- The blurb makes this summer break sound more dramatic than really is. Yes, Yukino and Soichiro miss each other. But really they are handling it very well. The main point of this volume is character development for Tsubasa. We get to see why she was so attached to Soichiro. Tsubasa does not want to deal with what is going in her family but in the end because of her new brother she can and does. Her new brother is her age and he is in a band. I look forward to seeing more of him. The other characters are there and we get to see more about Yukino's family. The last story in this volume is about her father and mother in childhood.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

I didn't enjoy this one as much because there wasn't too much of Yukino and Soichiro in this book. It's summer break and Soichiro is away at kendo tournament all summer. Volume 5 focuses on Tsubasa, who in Volume 4 has had a crush on Soichiro forever. When she learns that Soichiro and Yukino are boyfriend/girlfriend, she decides she doesn't like Yukino. By the end of the Volume 4, Tsubasa has decided that Yukino is ok and they become friends. Since she isn't spending time with Soichiro, she's spending more time with the girlfriends she became close to in Volume 4.

Tsubasa announces she's running away because her dad is remarrying and she doesn't want him to. Most of Volume 5 focuses on Tsubasa coming to terms to with her father's new marriage.

We also learn how Yukino's parents met. Again, I'd like more of Soichiro & Yukino.

I began this series quite a while back, but it has always stayed in my mind. It is one of the more memorable mangas I've encountered. I was FINALLY able to find the next installment today when I went to the library. After reading it though.....I felt a little empty. I hated that Soichiro was away, because I enjoy reading about his and Yukino's relationship. I understand that he returns and such but still....kind of a disappointment. However, I must say it was nice to see how Miyazawa's parents came to be together. It was very different than what I usually see and I appreciate this series more because this side story was included. I cannot wait to begin vol. 6. Thankfully, Arima will be back by then so things should hopefully get back to normal. =)
