Yes... I think I need sweet-stuff, Darojak murmured. She looked around at the twisting corridors, uncertain. Which way? She was not familiar with this part of the nest. Darojak lifted her antennae and sniffed the air, trying to catch a trail she recognized. But it was still difficult to tell which direction to take. The lingering scent of grief on her body still overwhelmed everything else.
Seeing this, Sunar stepped closer. I know every path in this nest.
He leaned in until their faces were close, brushing lightly against her so that his scent would cling to her antennae—something she could follow Darojak had never been this close to a male ant before. He was handsome. She felt heat rise to her face. Quickly she lowered her gaze, afraid he might notice.
Follow me, Sunar said gently. I know a special food storage chamber.
As if under a spell, the young queen followed the male ant. Along the way, Sunar continued releasing faint trails of pheromones. Every so often he glanced back, making sure Darojak had not lost his scent. Each time he smiled, her heart began to beat faster. She had never felt anything like this before.
