Three teen dragon tamers face their greatest monsters and fight to be happy together in this shamelessly queer coming-of-age graphic novel, set in a historical Philippines.

Ten years ago, the Great Tamers saved the people of Punong Panday from a giant hydra, turning the once savage beast into a peace-keeper. Now, these three men are known across the land as legends. But for Dima, Espie, and Keris, the Great Tamers are more than legends... they're their fathers. And to become worthy successors, the young friends must each prove themselves in a physical contest against the hydra, Matutum. Dima is too meek and untalented, especially compared to the short-tempered Espie. Even their cool mentor Keris never stood a chance at winning. When their dreams become a deadly game of pride, they have to find a way out together—with their blades drawn, and their fathers' legacies burnt to ashes. Draconic action, intimately written friendships, and a lush setting all come together in The Three Beasts, from debut author-illustrator Grovey Pascasio.

This is a story about family, friendship, and making the hard choices. To stand up for your friends, to stand up for others, to stand up for yourself. Do you follow the path of vengeance or justice? Do you try to change the system from within, or without? Do you let cruelty continue because it’s convenient, or do you see freedom as more important?

Three young characters with very different fathers: Dima’s father would rather spoil him than treat him like an adult; Keris’s father would use her as a pawn; Espie’s father wants the perfect child. And in the end, all three of them have to decide if they will follow in their father’s footsteps or forge a new path. In the background of all this is the rising unrest of the people currently under the rulership of these three great men, these three great tamers who use the giant hydra dragon as a symbol of their power, and a tool of their tyranny.

The art her is amazing. The variety of the dragon designs — from pulling coaches to being riding and flying animals; dragons as pets, dragons as livestock, dragons as vermin, dragons as monsters, and all against a colorful backdrop of a Philippine world. I’m sure there are Easter eggs I’m missing in the art, in the history, in the names due to a lack of familiarity with the mythos and the culture, but I still had a great deal of fun with this book.

This is one of the few that I’m going to go ahead and get a physical copy of simply because I liked it so much, and I highly recommend if you’re a fan of dragon books, coming of age stories, or stories that deconstruct the Chosen One tropes. It’s so well done, with an excellent plot and while the pacing is a little on the fast side … it’s a graphic novel and doesn’t have the time to linger the way I, personally, would have liked. And I’d love to see a novelization of this, just saying.

Thank you so very, very much to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC.

Okay so eh
I don't know, it just didn't work for me. It has potential but I just never connected to the character nor did I feel like they were that connected. I think the story and characters would have benefited from a longer format. And also it was quite obvious where the story was going from the beggining, at least to me.

I liked the art style and the overall look is really aesthetically pleasing. From character design to the world itself. The dragons were so cool I wish we could have gotten more of them.

And yayy queer representation, that is always a plus in my book!

I would still say to give it a chance there is definitely and audience for it, perhaps a younger one (I am 25 for reference).

Unfortunately, this comic just wasn't for me. I struggled to connect with both the characters and the story. I think that the pacing was too fast and that my problems with the story would've been alleviated by lengthening the graphic novel. With lengthening, there could be a stronger emphasis on the bond between the three MCs, especially early on in their childhood.

I do appreciate the queer representation, and I liked the color palettes used throughout the story. Some panels were a little hard to read, but overall it was very aesthetically pleasing. Thank you, NetGalley and Mad Cave Studios, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an eARC for me to review!

GORGEOUSSSSS art. I loved all of the dragons, and the artwork makes this a really stunning story.

However, the story felt very rushed. A lot of interesting things were brushed over (like the dragon types, the oppression of the farmers, the whole murderous fathers thing, etc.) that could have benefited from further expansion. Honestly it reads more of a first draft than a finished story. But what potential it has!!!

And it's queer!!!!!!!!!!! Hell yeah!!!!!!!!
