❝ Were there red flags? ❞
GIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRL. You want the short answer or the long one?
There needs to be a bootcamp for women before marriage. I didn’t think this would be an emotional read, but I was wiping tears off my kindle and struggling to read through blurry vision.
Burden, respectfully, your ex-husband is a blight on humanity‼️ They just be making anybody nowadays.
Now this is just me spiralling, but I think cheating should be a criminal offence. When you get married and then decide to step out on your marriage, you should be punished by law and have a permanent public record of your foolery for all and sundry to see. Let’s see how that works out for you in future relationships. Sure, there’ll still be willing participants, but at least everyone knows what they’re signing up for.
And honestly, I’m tempted to say rich people problems, but it really isn’t about rich people or poor people. Misfortune and heartbreak do not care about that. Take the money and the privilege away and what you’re left with is an echo of a million women’s voices. We can critique Burden all we want for being clueless and naive, but I’m far more incensed by her ex-husband’s audacity. For shame. I think if you’re in a position of power, it’s your responsibility not to abuse it. He was, emotionally, and he did.
I love the way this was written. I do see some admission of responsibility in her writing. I respect her vulnerability. She was a broken woman who was programmed to believe her worth was tied to a man. The fact that she shares the unsavoury parts of the story, the parts that don’t paint her in a flattering light, suggests she has come to terms with some of her own failings. At least, I hope so. I hope you’re okay now, Burden ♥️ But how are you everything except the one thing you should be, which is ANGRY. INCENSED. MURDEROUS ⁉️ Any of these three variations will do. I wish I had your grace and kindness.
🚨 The speed of our beginning and the speed of our ending, of his exit, felt like matching bookends. They both came out of nowhere. They both left me reeling. In both instances, he was definitive, certain. There was no gray area. The switch went on, and then it went off. He wanted it, he wanted me. And then he didn’t. 🚨
There are so many takeaways from this. Being complacent about your life is not an option. Accepting crumbs is not an option. Predators are real, and they come in all shapes and sizes. In business suits or in rags. With six-figure paychecks or beer bottles and bad intentions. In handsome packages to distract you or “average” ones to make you lower your guard. There is a difference between love and idolatry. Intimacy is non-negotiable. I never want to read the word “offering” in connection with a man again. There are things that should never be done, even in the throes of love, passion, lust, or whatever. It is okay to be alone.
WOMEN, PROTECT YOURSELVES. PUT YOURSELVES FIRST.
I have so many more things to say about Belle and James’ relationship, but this is a memoir. I don’t like to critique people’s lived experiences, so I’ll just shut up, drink something for this headache, and go to sleep.
The reason I’m giving this 5 stars is because I find value in it and I wish more women would read it.
Annika, I can’t tell you how much I LOVED reading this with you. Thank you for helping me process my explosive thoughts and heated emotions. Thank you, always ♥️
