Rookscroft: All Feathers and Hats

I first met Vernon on a lovely morning in late summer. I was in my art studio trying, unsuccessfully, to set up a still life with a handful of apples and an old chipped bowl, when I happened to glance over to the large leaded window that overlooks the fields and there he was, down in the lower left-hand corner, peering in...

Review for 'All Feathers And Hats' by Jayne Siroshton

This is the first book that I have read by this extremely talented author and artist but it most certainly will not be my last. It is the first book in her stunning 'Rookscroft' series and I am delighted to say that I will be reviewing all three of these treasures so make sure you return on the 4th October for my review of book 2 ''The Circus Of The Crescent Moon' and on the 27th October for my review of the third book 'Into The Wild Woods'.

This book is absolutely stunning and must have addition for any book lovers collection!! A gorgeous storyline with truly incredible illustrations. Read no further and grab your copy of these beauties now and you WILL NOT regret it!!!

Did you ever read Beatrix Potter as a child?? Well, if you did then you will absolutely LOVE these stunners!! This book is a modern day, beautiful and adult better version of the Beatrix Potter books and this book is also suitable for children. My 12 year old absolutely loved it as did my 7 year old twins love listening to and reading it. Be aware though that the third book is NOT suitable for children due to content. More will come on that on my review for 'Into The Woods'. Continuing with this beauty I really, really cannot compliment these illustrations enough and the fact that Jayne has not only written this gorgeous storyline but also done the illustrations to go with them really truly does go to show how incredibly talented she is!! If you are going to get this book, or all three, then I really would highly recommend you get the physical copies which are just absolutely delightful. They are extremely good quality, have a beautiful hardback covers with eye catching fonts in gold lettering and really are beautiful. I love seeing them on my book case as they are just so eye catching and everybody who has spotted them on my shelf has been immediately drawn to them. Myself and my partner who are 38 and 37 loved reading this book individually as did my 12 year old son. We also read this to our 7 year old boys who delighted in pointing out everything that was in the beautiful pictures from the animals to the objects and colours. We are huge animal lovers in this house and we even run a rescue called Golden Oldies Cat Rescue and Hospice which you can discover on social media if you wish. Therefore, any books with animals in are huge hits in this house and we all loved meeting Vernon the pheasant with his delightful hats, Quentin the poetic pheasant, the Turkey sisters Connie and even Madge, although we all preferred Connie, and the rest of the animal characters as well as our main protagonist Jayne of course!!! Our author Jayne has also very thoughtfully included a map in front of the book which we all enjoyed looking at so thank you for including that Jayne. There is such a large variety of characters and emotions in this book from anger to how a few of our characters are treated by their own family, heartache for how they felt about themselves, joy and love for the feelings they had for each other and much more. It is great for books that children can read to show such emotions as it gives a good inning to discuss them with children which can sometimes be difficult in everyday conversations. I really could go on and on about how gorgeous and amazing this book is but my words will never do it justice so seriously if you love animals, books, unique stories, the whimsical, nature, well no matter what you are into or love you and your children will absolutely adore these books so grab a copy now!! They would make stunning Christmas or birthday gifts too!!

STUNNING, WHIMSICAL, MAGICAL, UNPUTDOWNABLE.....I COULD GO ON!!!

GRAB A COPY OF THIS BOOK, OR EVEN BETTER THIS WHOLE SERIES TODAY AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!

THANK YOU JAYNE FOR CREATING THIS AMAZING ROOKSCROFT SERIES AND I HOPE THERE ARE MORE TO COME!!

Overall an absolutely gorgeous start to what promises to be an amazing series. Perfect for animal lovers!

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

Update September 2020:
I wish I could give this little book more than five stars. I absolutely loved this gem. It's a quick easy read which put me in a good mood instantly. It is just so cute and whimsical and filled with the most adorable illustrations and paintings. I'd recommend it to everyone!

First reading October 2015: 3 stars
Rookscroft is lively and entertaining. There are contrasting characters who make it fun to read. The way the characters and scenery are described is beautiful. So are the illustrations. My favorite part of this book was the end-which consists of a portrait. And wow that was a perfect ending.

Wandered into a whimsical store in Old York and discovered the world of Rookscroft. Having not heard of it, I felt left out and decided to buy the book. I would describe it as a cross between Beatrix Potter and Roald Dahl. It was a very simple, charming, pastoral read. Very sweet!

Nostalgic, enchanting and whimsical.
This is a fantasy world that anyone can enjoy.
The book features a charming map, and beautiful illustrations throughout all done by the author. It helps immerse yourself into this cosy world and get a feel for the characters.
In this first book we get to learn all about the main characters - Vernon, Quentin, Madge and Connie. It's a quick and easy read, in a style similar to Beatrix Potter with fantastical animals and quirky traits.
I enjoyed Quentin's honesty, felt sorry for Connie and how her sister treats her, and it was sad to see how Vernon was treated by his family.
It's a sweet story about friendship and romance, told from the pov of an artist who gets to paint and interact with these wonderful animals.
I would highly recommend getting this hardback edition as it's so beautiful and you can see all the love that's gone into making it.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this delightful book. I picked up loads of Beatrix Potter vibes from it, with a human, Jane and artist, forming friendships with the local wild foul. It began with a surprise visit early one morning from the very distinguished pheasant named Vernon who wishes to have his portrait painted in order to attract the attention of a fine turkey and he has set his sights on. Thus begins a humorous sort of love story with Jane trying to figure out which is a turkey sisters is object of Vernon‘s affection. Jane‘s interactions with various birds provides a very entertaining tale. The painted illustrations are absolutely stunning and really bring the fabulous characters to life. I can’t wait to find out more about these lovely creatures in the next book.

When I first saw the book, I was immediately drawn to it. The cover is wonderful.

This is a whimsical other world tale of the author, who is an artist in the book, meeting a talking pheasant called Veronon. What follows is a beautifully written, captivating story for both children and adults.

After Vernon has his portrait painted, other birds are eager for this too and the author is very descriptive of them, their quirks and relationships as well as the area in which they live.

All this comes with the most gorgeous illustrations and calligraphic words written by the poet Quintin (who happens to be my favourite)

I am really looking forward to book 2.

A very charming story with beautiful illustrations and a dedication to worldbuilding, which I appreciate. We bought this as a potential book to read to our daughter, and it's excellent for kids. One star off just for the editing: there are typos and run-on sentences on nearly every page, which is jarring, and would probably trip up younger readers. However, the story loses nothing for it.

Wow!

Where do I even start with this review!

First of all, when I received this book (series), I was absolutely blown away by the stunning book itself.

This is the hardback version and honestly it was such a joy!

Great quality - looks and feels amazing and I love the cover image.

It had all kinds of classic vibes going on and I just couldn't wait to dive in and see what this series always all about.

Reading this really took me back to my youth when my favourite thing to do was read whimsical stories about animals - think Beatrix Potter with a little dash of Winnie the Pooh!

A strange mix you may think but I add Winnie because there's a definite touch of humour running through the story too.

Now you may all remember that I actually have a mini phobia around birds - but I have to admit that all of the avian characters in this book were a joy to meet and it all felt like a very civilised afternoon tea.

I loved the whole premise of this series and for this book we mainly focus of Vernon, who on coming to have his portrait painted, opens up about his love dilemma.

We obviously meet many of the Rookscroft community along the way and I loved the way the author brought each character to life.

The descriptive writing had me transported to Rookscroft right along with Jayne and it was an idyllic visit.

The house, the surrounding area as well as it's residents, had me wanting to move in a spend a while!

I loved the way this particular storyline flowed.

Whilst forming an introduction to the series as a whole, Vernon's story was full of heart and had me hoping he'd get his happy ending.

I also have to mention the artwork which is dotted throughout the book.

This helps to give the younger readers a clear image of the characters and settings and really makes for an immersive read.

I say that this would have been the perfect book to treasure as my younger self - but this is a book that my current (quite) mature self will treasure forever too!

I cannot wait to dive into book 2 and disappear to Rookscroft for another hour or two.

For my full sensory autism, ADHD, AuDHD review please visit my blog. Readers will be spoilt with the gorgeous illustrations and a very accessible laid out and presented neat little book.

My youngest child required this one to be read to get and, my goodness, did she enjoy it and it got her thinking a lot about things covered in the book. We both can not wait to read book two. Myself and youngest daughter felt truly transported into Rookscroft and we were intrigued as to what was going to happen.

My daughter and I feel that the narrator is the author, however I did notice and my daughter did point out we do not know for sure if the narrator is human. We felt they probably are from the description of their home and talk of the pheasants dwelling. However I can see how this may be a little confusing.

The literary technique of anthropomorphism is used very much here with the characters. Myself, youngest daughter, teens, older children and other family members found the book suitable for all ages. My youngest, age 7, found the narrative quite mature and asked will there be and younger/children characters in the next book?

The pages are quite bright white and crisp, I sometimes find this tricky from a sensory and accessibility point, however this is all good here and it works for me and other family members.

Overall, the book ticks all the boxes for us here from its presentation, the narrative and illustrations. It is whimsical, fable and folklore vibes set in the English countryside, exploring relationships, social standing and etiquette and of course animals. As a family we all highly recommend and can not wait for the next instalment.

What an absolutely delightful book! All Feathers and Hats is an illustrated book that is aimed at readers aged 6 to adult and it's a book that everyone will enjoy. If you think it looks stunning from the outside, just wait until you see inside. The illustrations are exquisite and they seem to capture the very essence of the characters themselves.

Jayne Siroshton has both imaginatively written and beautifully illustrated the book showing there is no end to her creative talent. Jayne is also a character in the book which adds an air of authenticity and makes you believe that it could be real...if you believe in talking animals of course and who doesn't?

Vernon Cotterill, a hat wearing pheasant, appears at Jayne's door one day asking her to paint his portrait. Vernon is so pleased with the result that it isn't long before other animals are appearing at Jayne's door. As well as lots of fun elements to the story, there's also a sprinkling of romance that is simply lovely.

All Feathers and Hats has the feel of a timeless, ageless classic and it's the first book in a series so there are more delightful tales to come. Jayne Siroshton reminds me of a modern-day Enid Blyton and I wouldn't be surprised to find Rookscroft books on myriad bookshelves for many years to come.

A very highly recommended read for readers of all ages. I certainly plan to read it again and it is going straight onto my favourites shelf.

What a wonderful and whimsical little book this is!

All Feathers and Hats is the first book I have read by Jayne Siroshton and I’m looking forward to reading the other books in the Rookscroft series. I have the hardback version and it’s stunning! The book also contains artwork to go with the story which is fitting as Jayne herself is in the story and is an artist.

The book is written from Jayne’s perspective as an artist who lives in Rookscroft, a beautiful house in the countryside. One day she is visited by Vernon, a hat maker who happens to be a pheasant. He asks Jayne to paint his portrait and they strike up a friendship.

She meets other birds such as The Turkey sisters and Quentin who’s a pheasant poet and gets to know them while painting them too. There’s a bit of romance between the birds but overall it’s about friendship while feeling a bit lonely and different.

The characters are all described wonderfully and the beautiful illustrations also help show what they look like. Overall I found this to be a lovely book which I’ve enjoyed as much at the age of 37 as I would have at 7. It really is a book for all ages!

Thank you to Jayne Siroshton and Love Book Tours for sending me these beautiful editions.

Book 1 from The Rookscroft series All Feathers and Hats is about artist Jayne who has just moved into Rookscroft House. She spends her days painting and alas it is a lonely one, until she meets Vernon, a handsome pheasant who would her to paint his portrait. From there she receives many requests to paint her other animal neighbours and here she discovers this new magical world.

This was such a cute read. It gave me Beatrix Potter/Animals of Farthing Woods vibes. Maybe a little Mr Toad/Wind in the Willows. Very posh and proper.

It’s an easy read made even more so by the gorgeous artwork inside. I know I was eager to see them every time I read about Jayne’s paintings or adventures with her new friends.

This is the perfect family friendly book to read with your children for a wholesome bedtime story.

All Feathers and Hats - Book 1 of the Rookscroft series by Jayne Siroshton.

It tells the tale of Jayne, a budding artist who one day finds the enigmatic Vernon (a pheasant dressed in a top hat) peeping through her window.

What follows is a beautiful written journey as Jayne meets Vernon’s feathered friends and their quirks and lives open up to her.

My children loved this book. The gorgeous illustration on the cover immediately catching their eye. It was written in a charming, easy going style, reminding me of a whimsical Enid Blyton tale, a modern classic in the making. There was complex language, which might be a struggle for young independent readers but we enjoyed reading together and it was lovely for them to learn new words and see their enjoyment of doing so.

Each chapter has beautiful illustrations and we found ourselves racing to get to the next to see the characters brought to life.

Thank you to Jayne and love books tours for this copy to review.

Book 1 was a pleasant introduction to the characters in the Rookscroft series! We meet Vernon & Quentin who are the most gentlemanly pheasants, 1 a hat maker and the other a writer. We also meet a pair of turkey sisters, 1 very confident the other kind but stuck in her sister’s shadow and an opossum who is a pastor, he sermons to others in their local church. The author even includes her beautiful illustrations of each of them within the story. This certainly adds to the overall charm of All Feathers and Hats. I just love the interactions between Jayne and the animals and welcomed the daily chats and muses about life and relationships in general as she paints them.

While the story is whimsical, I feel it was also a reminder that we can all find the beautiful in life if we stop, slow down and look around at the details amongst us, because even the smallest interaction can make a difference. I’m excited to continue the series.

All Feathers and Hats is the first book in the Rookscroft series by Jayne Siroshton and it honestly took me right back to my childhood days of reading stories about animals and birds. This one feels so much more mature and unique. The plot kept me intrigued, sometimes even made me laugh, and it had this folkish vibe that made me feel really nostalgic.

I loved how whimsical and quirky the characters were. They gave me the feeling that I was hanging out with friends, listening to local gossip, rather than just flipping through pages. The author has such an imaginative way of slipping in little bits of real-world situations without ever making it heavy. It is all done in such a fun and subtle way.

And the illustrations were absolutely beautiful and added so much to the whole reading experience. I cannot wait to pick up book two and see where this series goes.

This book is utterly charming, we fell in love with the characters who were quirky and sweet and had such fabulous personalities. The illustrations were gorgeous, our favourite was Vernon in the lavender bush! The story is timeless in the same way a Beatrix Potter story is and would be a wonderful addition to any home library. I read this with my 6 year old and we were enchanted and can not wait to start on the next book in the series.

The story starts with Jayne the artist meeting Vernon, a most noble pheasant wearing a simply wonderful hat. So taken with him is she that she manages to persuade him to sit for a portrait and in the course of their sittings Jayne finds out about other creatures living nearby.

Vernon recommends that she paint the portrait of Madge and Connie, the turkey sisters, whose personalities are like chalk and cheese. Vernon lets on that he admires one of them and Jayne can't help but be intrigued by which one. Madge is precocious and domineering and Connie is kind and thoughtful. Which will the upstanding Vernon favour?

I will not spoil the ending other than to say it is perfect!

This was such a delightfully charming book which can be enjoyed by any age. From the book design a small hardback edition with glossy pages easy to read print.
With illustrations that are just beautiful and fit so well with the style of book.

It's quite a quirky little story. The narrator a would-be artist happens to spot a pheasant wearing a hat. And even more shocked when the very eloquent pheasant starts to speak.
They soon strike up a conversation and Most Noble Vernon Cotterill the Third agrees to allow his portrait taken. What follows is a whimsical tale of these two characters getting to know each other. We also meet an interesting array of side characters too.
All in all an absolute delight to read. It almost takes me back to reading Beatrix Potter when I was younger.

I loved this book so much! The story was lovely, and it warmed my heart so much to read it. The cover is excellent, and I adore that it features Vernon's portrait. The book is so well written and flows beautifully. The writing is so charming and imaginative. It made me think of The Animals of Farthing Wood. I loved that as it was a beautiful childhood memory! The illustrations are stunning, and I love all the artwork in the book. The attention to detail is fantastic. I loved all the characters, and they fit into this story perfectly. The feathered friends are so much fun. Madge made me giggle. I definitely recommend the series and I can't wait to read more of Rookscroft!

Such a lovely cosy, child friendly story. I absolutely love the qwerky characters. All with their own unique personalities.

This whimsical story set in autumn which is fabulous for now, reading this with a top of tea, watching all the fallen leaves outside the window.

I love how descriptive and imaginative the author is, I very much felt like I was a painting on the wall watching everything unfold before my eyes, instead of reading it.

The illustrations are just darling! Kinda like waterpainted with a magical feel.

I cant wait to read this to my son (whom is abit young to sit and listen at present time).

I didn’t expect to adore this quite as much as I did! I knew it was going to be a treat going in, but I just fell in love with all the characters.

The book has its own illustrations by the author, who also acts as the main character in the story, encountering some beautiful and unusual birds with fantastically unique stories.

We meet Vernon, Quentin, Madge and Connie, and as they sit for portraits, we hear all about love stories and romantic interests, with the turkey sisters at the centre of attention!

I’m really excited to get started on book two, and I just know it’s going to have the same fun and whimsical feel to it. An excellent read for any age.

4.5 ⭐️

This was such a fun read and I can imagine so many youngsters loving the concept. I love folklorish tales especially with talking animal companions and this gave me all the feels that my classics of Peter Rabbit & Wind in the Willows did growing up. I enjoyed that the writing of this was very simple and easy to follow. I felt engaged within the story and liked how each chapter even though in most cases was regarding a new character it always linked the previous ones together with a main plot that came to head. Really looking forward to the other two books in this series.

Jayne is a painter who, one day, meets a pheasant who wishes to be painted. The other residents of Rookscroft eventually make themselves known, and Jayne gets to know a varied cast of wonderful creatures.

This was a short but wholesome story. The illustrations that accompanied it were quite beautiful. The birds were all unique and full of character. This was a perfect family story, and a would be a wonderful book to introduce slightly older kids to reading.
I'm really excited to meet more creatures of Rookscroft!

I read this book with my 9 year old daughter, Peighton. When I asked her what she thought about the book, she said:

“I like that she is an artist. I think Madge is a bit mean to Connie and Vernon seems quite posh. I really like the pictures in the book you can tell that there has been a lot of time spent making them”

As a parent, reading this book with my daughter… I found the story to be quite a slow burner as we got to know the characters but by the end of the book I was fully invested and wanted more from these characters!

We are both really looking forward to continuing the series!

Fun, quirky and whimsical - The Rookscroft series follows a band of unlikely talking animals and their exploits and transports you to lands you may not have experienced since childhood! This endearing book awakens a childlike awe in you and reminds you how magical, and innocent, reading can be. Not specifically a children’s book, but one for children at heart! I loved it and cannot wait to continue to series. Add to this the beautiful illustrations, maps and cover art and it truly is something magical to behold!

Super super cute! We loved the character development through the book, learning about everyone from an artists eyes!
The illustrations are classic and tie into each chapter really well.
All the animals have different jobs but are all interconnected and the artist holds the key!
Robert has loved to joint read book 1 unravelling and learning all the names. To keep him interested is a hard task and Rookscroft is doing that!

From the cover to the contents this is a great fiction book for most ages

I had such a fun time reading this story! At 111 pages, it was a quick read. But there was such heart packed into this relatively short story. Each character had such personality and I love a talking animal with clothes! (And fabulous hats!)
I have to take a moment to gush about this hardback edition as well. The cover is beautiful, the pages are glossy and of amazing quality, and there are illustrations by the author all throughout that are gorgeous and beautifully bring the story to life. Amazing. This is a wonderful story to read with your littles, but also lovely and enjoyable to read just for yourself.

Firstly let’s take a moment to appreciate how pretty this book is! The cover is stunning and I love the use of illustrations throughout. There is also some beautiful calligraphy in the form of letters.

We are introduced to several intriguing animal characters each with their own distinct personality and you cannot help but love them (and wish you could meet them!).

This book is pure, uncomplicated escapism and I cannot wait to read book two.
