It was improbable that Eris and Denny would ever meet: different backgrounds, different families, different lives. Two girls with absolutely nothing in common, unlikely to ever cross paths. That is until Denny becomes Eris’ Knight in a White Transit, rescuing her from a brutal attack.
With selective mutism, multiple injuries, and years worth of trauma, Eris isn’t an easy nut to crack, but that doesn’t put Denny off: despite being polar opposites, she opens up her home and her heart to the stranger and, as the days go by, the two slowly realise they may not be as incompatible as once thought.
Suncatcher was one of those hurt/comfort books that leaves you feeling ridiculously giddy even after you've finished it. This was my first time reading this author, but I can already tell you it won't be my last! And for a book that's around 500 pages, it absolutely flew by because I somehow managed to read the whole thing in one sitting.
The way the author wrote these characters was remarkably well done; they felt like real people with believable flaws. I found myself completely wrapped up in their stories and genuinely sympathizing with everything they went through. Usually, I end up connecting with one MC more than the other, but that didn't happen here because the hold Eris and Denny have on me right now is unreal.
Denny was the sunshine of the pair, and I adored her golden retriever energy. She had this enormous heart and was constantly giving her best to the people she cared about, sometimes to the point of overthinking everything she said or did because she cared so much about how she affected others. I also really appreciated how aware she was of her own privilege. She knew she'd grown up spoiled, but that never made her oblivious to the difficulties other people faced. She could have easily been unlikable, but her grounded nature made me root for her from day one.
Eris took a little longer to figure out because she was much more guarded, but my heart ached for her once we started learning about her past. The way she slowly opened her heart to the idea of more than just surviving was truly moving. She spent so long simply trying to make it through each day, so seeing her discover love, happiness, and the possibility of actually living made me so emotional. She deserved every bit of softness she eventually found.
But THE ROMANCE... This relationship had me in absolute shambles.
What I loved most was how naturally Eris and Denny's connection developed. They truly weren't looking for love (or anything else) when their paths crossed. Instead, their bond grew through all those little, quiet moments where they began understanding each other better than either of them realized.
They're complete opposites, but somehow that made them fit together even better. Eris and Denny were like two puzzle pieces that shouldn't have worked together, yet somehow fit perfectly. Each of them brought something into the relationship that the other was missing, and I loved watching those differences become a source of strength rather than conflict.
And I really appreciated how healthy their communication was.
They respected each other’s triggers. They didn’t try to change one another. They accepted each other’s flaws instead of expecting some perfect version of the other person. Most importantly, they actually talked about their insecurities rather than shutting each other out. As someone who has read far too many third-act breakups that could have been solved with one honest conversation, I was so relieved that Eris and Denny actually communicated.
But what really got me was how deeply healing and restorative their connection became for both of them. They helped each other work through wounds they didn't even realize were still there. They both became better, happier versions of themselves because they met each other...
Finding someone who makes your life feel brighter, who helps you discover colors you didn't know existed, who doesn't "save" you but gives you the safety to finally save yourself... that was Eris and Denny for me.
There were, however, a few things I wish had been explored more.
The demisexual representation was one of the things I was particularly excited about because it’s still relatively uncommon to see it explored in sapphic romance. While Denny’s demisexuality does come up, most of that exploration happens through her internal narration, and I wanted more. Eris seemed to understand what it meant for their relationship, but I really wish we’d gotten an actual conversation between them, especially since I would've loved to see them explore that aspect of their relationship together.
I also felt similarly about Denny's ADHD and Eris's autism. Both seemed relevant to their everyday experiences, so I was surprised that they were mostly limited to brief mentions. I felt like there was so much untapped potential in these aspects that could have added another layer.
Then, the family aspect was one of the most heartwarming parts of the entire book.
Denny’s parents welcoming Eris without judging her past made for such wholesome scenes. Seeing Eris experience a healthier idea of family after growing up with such a complicated relationship with that concept was genuinely touching. That's why, by the end, I was craving more of that cozy found-family energy. Those scenes made the book shine.
Eris's brother was another missed opportunity for me. He was introduced so late, yet the few scenes they shared made me wish we'd gotten to see more of their relationship. There was something incredibly touching about their dynamic, especially considering how much it seemed to mean to Eris.
I loved everything about their journey, but the ending was a tiny bit of a letdown for me personally. Once the storyline with Eris's crazy ex was resolved and Micah suddenly appeared, the epilogue felt a little too abrupt. I really wanted a glimpse of Eris and Denny a few years later, once they'd had time to settle into their relationship and build a life together. After investing so much in their story, I simply wasn't ready for it to end there.
Still, I want to stress that these are minor details rather than major criticisms. The foundation of this book is exceptionally strong, and I already know Eris and Denny are going to stay with me for a long time.
Because Suncatcher isn't simply a romance. It's about hope. It's about resilience. It's about vulnerability and learning that you don't always have to carry everything alone. It's about finally allowing yourself to let go, trusting that there will be someone on the other side ready to catch you.
And honestly, what more could I ask from a love story?
For me personally, cosy books are synonymous to “bland”, meaning it lacks emotional turmoil. However, I am reminded yet again that Kayla Faber is a master when it comes to toeing that line. Yes, the story is like wearing pyjamas on a rainy day tucked under a doona with a good book. However, the author injects their prose with much psychological narrative, I honestly wonder if they moonlight as a therapist. There’s no hidden agenda, just plain HEA but never boring, no. Instead, you get a healthy dose of rainbow coloured light through a suncatcher.
“What are they?” “Suncatchers!” “So they’re useless on rainy days.” “They’re not useless! ” “They’re called suncatchers. We live in a virtually sunless country.” “The sun will come out at some point! And its light can’t make rainbows going through just any glass! They sort of… need each other to show their best side.”
Goodreads says "Goodreads Authors may review their own book from their official Goodreads Author account", so why not? I put my whole heart into this book, pieces of my own AuDHD soul... These girls deserve five stars.
It makes you feel loved and seen. What more could you ask for from a book
Denny & Eris should've made a weird matchup, but they just get each other. They really are one in a million.
I love that Eris made sure Denny knew she didn’t have to change herself, so many people are chameleons in real life, under the impression that to fit in with others, they need to mask who they really are inside, and to find someone who reiterates that actually no, you don’t have to, you can just be yourself, is what we all need in our lives.
Close your eyes and picture this with me: you’re a kid in a candy store and you’ve just been told that you have no budget, that you can have whatever you want. That is what reading this book felt like. It’s like Kayla said: ‘here, dear reader, take this,’ and then hands you the most satisfyingly sweet sapphic romance ever! I’m pretty sure I’ll have this sugar rush for days, maybe even weeks. Everything I could ask for from a book, Kayla wrapped in the prettiest paper and sealed it with the biggest bow.
Denny and Eris’ unrelenting commitment to communicate, to coexist, and then to completely fall blissfully in love made for what I can only call one of the best books I have ever read. Period. My favorite book has sat at the top of my list since 9th grade and nearly two decades later, Suncatcher has taken over the #1 spot.
There is legitimately nothing I did not like about this book. The characters, the story, the banter, the domestic balancing, the intimacy, the sheer audacity Kayla had to put neurodivergence on full display and not being afraid of doing so… it was all so incredibly stunning and perfect.
It read like a romance, but at some points it felt like a therapy session. Like their story, with how beautiful and how intricate it was, sat you down and said: ‘hey, that way you see yourself, it’s not who you are.’ And then it poured sunshine over you and made you feel just a little less invisible, a little less weird, and a little less like a burden.
It reminds you that when you choose a partner in life, it isn’t just about making it work. It’s about being truly seen by that person and that person loving you for exactly who you are. It reminds you that love is about letting your walls down enough to allow yourself to feel the safety of that person’s companionship. It’s not just about making it work, it’s about experiencing life together, with your own autonomy intact. Fitting together like a puzzle and not being formed into whatever feels best like Play-Doh.
Denny and Eris were so different from each other that you kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the entire thing to blow up. And then slowly, their dynamic as a couple takes center stage and you watch them start to heal together, fit together, and find blissful happiness. All you want to do is cheer them on as much as the people in their lives do.
There’s a reason I write the cause of divorce as incompatibility so much at work. But these two, nah, these two knew how to be the biggest green flags in each other’s lives, never letting the red ones find their way through the door. They knocked, but they never let them in. And it all started with trust, one of the grandest gifts you can give another person.
If you’re curious about the spice, I’ll just say this. There’s an awfully exquisite reason that those whose brains work a little differently find comfort, peace, and safety by handing themselves over willingly to a partner who knows their needs and boundaries.
This book took me on the most magical emotional journey. There is no denying just how much I fell in love with Eris & Denny and their little love story. Five stars all around. Tens across the board. A perfect 100%. I will treasure being able to experience Suncatcher forever.
This one isn’t meant to be devoured. It’s too magnificent for that. Take your time, feel it, breathe it in, highlight it like a college textbook the way I did. And if you love it just as much as I do, come find me, tell me! I could talk endlessly about the beauty that is this book.
It has my whole heart. I was so lucky to be able to read this Arc. I was sucked in straight away and I couldn't put it down. Sun Catcher is one of those books you read with constant tears in your eyes. It breaks your heart and then puts it back together. Eris and Denny, sweet neurodivergent babies. It's nice to feel seen and understood.
The characters are beautifully written and you will fall in love with them instantly. The love they share is greater than anything else. The world would be much better if everyone just accepted each other, like everyone in this book
I've sat down so many times to write this review and every time I end up crying and needing to pause because of how beautiful this story is. So, buckle up cause I've got a lot to say about this book. For context, I highlighted 109 quotes or things I loved in this book- the most I've ever used that feature on my kindle and this review is over 1,100 words.
If you are neurodivergent, or if you aren’t and have an open mind and want a glimpse into our world, I highly recommend this book.
I have never, in the 300+ sapphic books I've read, found one that represented neurodivergences so well...until I read Suncatcher. As someone who has several diagnosed neurodivergences, this book is so very important to me and I’ve never felt more seen and truly understood by a book. There were so many moments that may seem insignificant to some, but they meant the world to me. This is one of those books that just feels like the warmest and tightest hug, and I will be re-reading at some point.
A bit about the main characters ✨️Denny aka "Sunshine": she is a demisexual lesbian with undiagnosed ADHD. She also has an abusive ex that more than deserves to be 6 feet under for every horrific she has done and continues to do. She inherited a successful flower shop from her grandmother along with the financial stability that came with it. Her parents are supportive in as many ways as they can be. ✨️Eris: she is a masc bisexual with selective mutism and undiagnosed Autism. She left her home and went no contact with her abusive parents; her older brother having done the same when he was of age. Ever since she was a child, she had to learn how to make ends meet, which, unfortunately, has led to her having a criminal record.
Denny and Eris' meeting is that of extreme luck. Eris had gotten into a situation where she was beaten on the street, Denny happened to show up at just the right moment to save her. At this point, Eris had gone completely mute, only communicating in grunts and facial expressions. When Eris refused to go to the ER, for some unknown reason, Denny and her massive heart decided to bring Eris back to her home to take care of her.
As Eris is healing in Denny’s home, they both realize just how much they each have to unpack. Eris with her traumatic upbringing and life before Denny, and Denny with her abusive ex-girlfriend and insecurity in herself (caused by the ex). Watching them gently encourage each other to talk through things and being supportive of one another in a way no one else has done for either of them was so beautiful. There were so many seemingly insignificant moments in which one of them would do something simple for another, but the other found it so meaningful and important.
I’ll say that I usually like my books spicy, this book was not that at all, nor was it advertised that way. The way this book focused in on healing and comfort and intimacy without sex was just so beautiful and brought me to tears many, many times. In the simplest terms, Denny is demisexual, meaning that she doesn’t desire or need sex to feel fulfilled in a relationship while Eris is allosexual, meaning that she does have a desire to have sex. They share so many little moments where they are connecting emotionally and intellectually and sometimes physically.
During the many sweet and tender, and sometimes heated, kisses they share, Denny’s nerves and anxiety kicked into high gear because of her ex (who I firmly believe would be better off 6 feet under). Eris’ constant reassurance that kissing doesn’t need to lead to sex and that they wouldn’t go further until Denny was ready was the sweetest thing. Their communication and ability to read one another in these and SO many other moments was incredible to see.
I could write another 5,000 words about these two and their story, but I will stop here for now :)
I didn't want to say goodbye to Eris and Denny and all the other characters (the good ones) in this book, even after over 500 pages. These two have more than earned a permanent residence in my brain and in my heart. I do have hope that we may see more of them in another story with how that ending went 👀
Favorite quotes & details (all of which that made me cry): - "She hated that she couldn’t stop thinking how soft Eris’ cheek felt. Despite the acne scars, despite how poorly Eris took care of it, her skin had the exact same texture of the petals of the roses in Denny’s hands, but with a warmth that no rose could dream of." o I broke down when I read this. As someone who has had acne for years and the scars that goes with it, having it be described as soft and compared to a rose petal was so beautiful, and not as gross or disgusting was healing to me. I've only seen this in one other book and I question why that is. - "Eris stroked her hair with a sigh. If she moved her now, Denny might wake up and force herself to get back to work. Eris wasn’t going to allow that." o Difficult periods and period comfort in books will always get me. Denny struggling with painful and debilitating periods was portrayed in a real-life kind of way. Eris knowing exactly what she needs and taking care of her in such a tender way had me sobbing. - "Who would’ve thought that being alive could be so unpainful?" - "Physical attraction puzzled her and scared her at the same time: she couldn’t fathom how people just saw each other and hooked up, reducing sex to a mere performative activity. To her, intimacy only made sense as an expression of love and devotion." o Having these thoughts I’ve had for years put into words made me feel oh so seen and is helping me to figure other pieces of myself out - Accessibility tools for communication - Chin tilts - Doing her hair - Being truly excited to listen to passionate rambles - Rocco aka “Sunshine’s Minion” aka Denny’s flower shop assistant - Pay attention to the title, it’s important, but you’ll just have to read the book to find out why 😉
A Heartwarming Romance That Will Leave Your Heart Full!
This is one of those heartwarming books that leaves you completely satisfied, with a heart so full of love that you’ll be smiling for days afterwards.
This story follows a grumpy Eris and a sunny Denny, and their initial meeting and relationship development were beautifully written and so easy to get lost in. Kayla has this incredible ability to make her stories flow effortlessly, drawing you through the pages so smoothly that you never want the masterpiece to end.
Eris and Denny’s relationship was beautiful from beginning to end. Their slow-burn development was flawlessly executed, and the steamy elements were the perfect addition. Their relationship was captivating and entertaining, with perfectly timed humour that had me smiling throughout.
Kayla is one of those authors where, if she writes it, I’m going to read it—and she never disappoints. Her writing is incredible, engaging, and always entertaining. I honestly can’t recommend this book, or Kayla’s other books, enough. I can’t stress enough just how much I absolutely LOVED this book!
Thank you, Kayla, for another incredible read. ❤️
Star rating. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice rating. 🔥🔥🔥
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
Absolutely phenomenal story by a fave author! Thank you to the author for an advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I started seeing this author on Instagram when Pretty Devils was coming out. After that book, I read the two that I hadn’t and have been reading everything ever since. Always five stars as that’s just how well each story is written.
Suncatcher literally captured me right from the first sentence. I mean, I was already excited just from the cover and teasers from the author, but I didn’t realize just how immersed I would be. And when my name showed up ? Mind blown lol.
This book is emotional, healing, neurodivergent, heartwarming and comforting. It was never boring or flat. The characters (even side characters) had depth and growth.
Suncatcher, let’s light shine on Eris and Denny through a story that’s infused with the heart and soul of the author in a very best way. Highly recommend!!
I am in love with this book's two main characters! Eris and Denny are equal parts sunshine, authenticity, and perfect imperfection!! This book is as emotional as it is heart warming. So much love shared and yet the story doesn't shy away from talking about heavy subjects. So real and raw I loved every second of reading it!!
Apparently, all you have to do is whisper grumpy/sunshine sapphic romance in my general direction, and I will come running.
Suncatcher was such a warm, sweet little emotional ambush.
I loved the contrast between the two main characters and how their differences weren’t just there to create cute banter. There was tenderness here. Vulnerability. Hurt/comfort. Those delicious little moments where someone starts quietly learning another person’s soft spots and, instead of poking them, starts protecting them.
That is my weakness!
I also really enjoyed the neurodivergent representation. These women are allowed to be complicated, awkward, overwhelmed, stubborn, loving, messy human beings without the story trying to sand off all their edges. And there is something particularly lovely about watching two people figure out how to love each other in the ways the other person actually needs.
Plus… sapphics. Grumpy/Sunshine. A plant shop. Mutual protectiveness. Kayla Faber, you knew what you were doing! 😂
This wasn't a dramatic, rip-my-heart-from-my-chest kind of romance for me. It was softer than that. It felt cozy. Like finding a patch of sunlight and deciding to stay there for a while.
Thanks to Kayla Faber for gifting me an eARC of Suncatcher. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
First of all, huge thank you to the author for the arc!
Whenever I’ve tried to explain what the perfect romance book to me would be - THIS is exactly what I was trying to explain. So if anyone ever asked me again, I’ll give them this to read. And if they don’t ask, I’ll still make them read this.
It is more than clear that the author put a lot of thought, love, heart and work into creating each character and the story. The setting and feelings were transported so realistically and in a way, even I could completely feel them and be there.
Each character felt absolutely realistic and the ADHD, Autism and Mutism representation was incredible! Plus how incredible of an author does someone have to be to have one character not speak a single word for quite a while and make it work so good?! Wow!
I think what I loved most about all of it (aside from the amazing writing of course) was how the characters worked together at all times. Believed what the other one said and communicated about everything, even when it was hard. There was no forced drama between them and just a lot of understanding. They saw each others, what other people would call a flaw, and instead of being shitty about it, they helped or find ways to make those struggles easier for the other one.
Denny was an absolute sunshine with the biggest heart there is. Yet, she was realistic and someone I could relate to in multiple ways. Seeing how Eris reacted to those things and chose not to shit on her for it healed small parts inside me, I think.
Eris was the opposite of Denny, yet not that opposite. And also absolutely realistic. With her I could too see a few things I could relate to and had similar healing feelings as with Denny.
They made sense together. They didn’t feel like the author forced them together and I cannot scream loud enough about how the warmth was between the soul and the heart before it spread between the legs. They fell in love with each other instead of each others bodies and as someone who is most likely on the demiromantic spectrum was never able to relate to those characters who started having feelings for someone over how their bodies looked, hips swayed or boobs pressed against a shirt. This however? These characters I could relate to!
I also loved the storyline surrounding sex. I don’t wanna spoil anything, but that was SO so important and beautifully done 🫶🏻
I feel like this is one of those books everyone should read. Either to feel seen, or to learn. Might it be to learn about adhd, autism or mental health struggles, healthy communication or just a healthy relationship. This is a must read, definitely.
thank you kayla faber for the chance to arc read this AMAZING book. i’m gonna be so honest, i have been struggling to write this, and once i finally wrote most of it i accidentally deleted it all😭so here we go again i have never felt so seen in a book as i did with this. everything about denny resonated so perfectly with me it felt like i was looking in a mirror, from needing to see things to remember them, and talking a LOT, to saying id do something later and then never doing it. everything she did described me so well and i fell for her instantly i absolutely adored eris, while i didnt relate to her like denny, it’s hard not to love eris. she was so strong and still a genuine good person after being handed a really shitty life. the way she so fiercely stood up for denny and reminded her that she was not the person blake had convinced her she was, she is the kind of person you want in your life. i loved their relationship every step of the way, and how considerate they were of each others feelings, and how willing they were to compromise, and the way they could tell what the other was saying/ thinking just by a look. i’m not going to go too into detail about the specifics because i think you should learn about them by reading it, and you will NOT regret it.
A heartfelt story that will put you through the ringer then back together again.
Between ADHD/autism rep, bi and demisexual rep, and POC rep, this intersectional story touches on so many aspects of life and makes you feel it all. Denny's battles navigating daily life with ADHD and her sense of consent as a demisexual made my heart hurt for her. Her struggles with bullying as a light skinned POC even more so. Eris' abusive childhood made her into a heartwrenchingly feral guard dog perfect for her flower shop owner with many rude customers. This story focuses on the characters more than an action packed plot, so if you want to raw dog pure angst and comfort, I would definitely reccomend this book. Will be sending my therapy bill. All opinions are my own. Thank you Kayla Faber for the ARC!
Suncatcher is about how the right person can find you at exactly the moment you need them, bringing love and comfort into even the darkest corners of your life. Kayla Faber takes some incredibly heavy subjects—abandonment, trauma, abusive relationships, neurodivergence, demisexuality, and self-worth—and somehow infuses the entire story with so much softness and warmth. The darker pieces never overshadow the tenderness. Instead, they make the compassion and empathy at the center feel that much more meaningful.
Eris is all rough edges and self-preservation, shaped by a lifetime of being told she was too much, too sensitive, too difficult, or simply not worth listening to. After learning early on to bottle everything up and “shut up” about her problems, she has spent years relying only on herself , never knowing what it means to have people care for her without wanting something in return. Denny is literally sunshine in human form, but even she has learned to make herself smaller after being repeatedly told she was too much by the people who were supposed to love her. She gives freely, never keeps score, and extends compassion even when she should be protecting herself. Their growth comes from realizing that love doesn’t ask them to be less of themselves but gives them the freedom to finally be more.
Eris and Denny are two sides of the same coin, completely different yet somehow fit together in a way that makes each feel more whole. Eris has never understood how someone could love her without expecting something equal in return, while Denny has spent so much of her life trying to fit herself into whatever shape someone else demanded. Eris learns that accepting help isn't weakness and that being loved isn't a debt she has to repay, while Denny learns she doesn't have to keep her mask on just to remain worthy of love. Their intimate moments are especially tender because that same care carries through them: Eris is patient with Denny's hesitations and lets her set the pace without ever making her feel like she is holding back or failing to be enough. There is so much trust in the way they care for each other, and that makes their connection feel so much deeper than simple attraction.
The story puts both women in situations that start pulling at every thread they’ve used to hold themselves together. Denny’s toxic ex isn't simply an outside obstacle; her presence makes it painfully clear how thoroughly Denny was manipulated into shrinking herself, while also showing just how fiercely Eris will protect those she cares for. At the same time, it never turns healing into a neat transformation. Eris still has to learn how to ask for help, accept kindness, and believe that people can stay without tipping the scale. Denny has to learn that kindness doesn't mean endlessly making herself available to people who take advantage of it. Every challenge pushes them a little closer to understanding that love should make life easier to breathe through, not require either person to erase themselves to keep it.
Suncatcher ultimately feels like a story about finally being seen clearly and realizing that being fully yourself doesn't make you harder to love—it makes the right love possible. It’s a reminder that asking for help isn’t weakness, kindness doesn’t require self-erasure, and the people who truly care about you won’t ask you to change to make them comfortable. Sometimes the safest place to land is with someone who makes it easier to breathe, to take up space, and to see yourself a little more clearly. Sometimes it takes the right person beside you for you to finally see all the colors that were already there.
Thank you SO much to the author for the chance to read this ARC!
Favorite Quotes: “No one had ever stood up for her like that. Her entire existence so far had been a sequence of kicks in the teeth, figurative and literal. She was used to being by herself, relying on herself, trusting only herself…and now she was putting her life in the hands of a stranger.”
“[H]er skin had the exact same texture of the petals of the roses in her hands, but with a warmth that no rose could dream of.”
“[She] sought her like a sunflower seeking the sun, quietly and unassumingly, always there when she needed her and never expecting anything in return.”
“No one had warned her. She had always felt invincible because pain had never crushed her, but it wasn’t the pain… It was the love. Love crushed people. And maybe she was made of glass. She was willing to risk it.”
“Life is hard enough. The real ones will make it better for you, not worse.”
“I don’t want to lose you.” // “I don't want you to erase yourself to keep me.”
“Suncatchers! The sun will come out at some point! And its light can’t make rainbows going through just any glass! They sort of… need each other to show their best side.”
“Since I've had you in my life, it's like it's easier to breathe. You make me feel less... outnumbered in the world.”
“This is not a competition: my shit doesn’t invalidate yours. You have a right to grieve for whatever hurts you. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
“Help wasn’t always a moral duty or an act of pity. Sometimes it was love asking to be accepted.”
“It didn’t seem possible that two souls that belonged so deeply to each other had ever been apart, unaware of the other’s existence.”
Buckle in, because this is going to be a long one! I wish my words could truly do justice to how amazing this book is, but every time I try to put my thoughts down I get a little lost. There’s just so much I love about Suncatcher that I want to share while somehow still not spoiling anything. But I’m going to try, so here goes!
I’m generally a quick reader but every once in a while I come across a book that makes me intentionally slow down, not because I’m struggling to get through it but because I’m so absorbed in every single page that I never want it to end! I spent several hours with Suncatcher the first day I picked it up and could have happily kept going, but I quickly realized this was a story I wanted to take my time with. Every single word and scene felt purposeful, and there were so many little details and quiet moments I wanted to fully appreciate rather than rush past. Right from the start you don’t just feel for these characters, you experience every emotion right alongside them. And I think that leads to one of Kayla’s strengths as a writer - she makes her characters feel incredibly human. From the moment we meet Eris I wanted to take her under my wing and protect her from the entire world. So I completely understood Denny’s instinct to do exactly that. But what I really love is that Eris is never reduced to someone who simply needs saving. She was given a vulnerability without taking away her strength. Yes her past has shaped the way she moves through the world, but it never becomes the totality of who she is. Then we have warm, sweet, bubbly, but surprisingly strong Denny, who I connected with in a completely different (and at times almost startlingly personal) way. There’s an authenticity to the way these characters are written. The neurodivergence rep never feels added on to define either character, it’s simply part of who they are and how they experience the world. ADHD and autism aren’t reduced to a collection of traits or used as shorthand for their personalities. They’re woven naturally into how these women think, communicate, navigate relationships, misunderstand situations, and ultimately come to understand themselves and each other. We get to watch them put names to parts of themselves they’ve lived with for years. If you share some of these experiences, there are wonderful moments of “oh my god, YES” recognition. And if you don’t, the author’s writing still brings you close enough to Eris and Denny that you can understand what those experiences feel like from the inside. There’s so much empathy in the way they’re written, while still allowing them to be funny, messy, capable, vulnerable, loving, and completely themselves.
And now we get to Eris and Denny as a couple, and the two of them together are where this story truly shines. On the surface it would be easy to label them grumpy/sunshine, but their dynamic is so much more nuanced. Yes Denny is warm, bright, and open, while Eris has a much tougher and dark exterior, but neither woman is permanently designated as the strong one or the vulnerable one. Instead they trade those roles effortlessly. When Eris falls, Denny catches her. When Denny falters, Eris is there. They both have moments when they need to be protected, reassured, understood, or simply allowed to fall apart, and they both find strength when the other needs them. I loved that reciprocity!! Their relationship never felt like one person healing or rescuing the other. It felt like two people slowly learning each other well enough to recognize what the other needs, sometimes before they even know how to ask for it themselves. We got to experience the highs and lows alongside them and see through their eyes just how beautiful, messy, vulnerable, and overwhelming it can be to love someone and be loved in return.
There are heavy things in this story. There’s trauma and pain and fear alongside all of the softness, but trust that it’s never used simply to manufacture emotions. The difficult moments help deepen the understanding of these women and make the tenderness between them feel incredibly earned. Suncatcher is nearly 500 pages, but it never felt like a long book to me. If anything, I wanted more time inside this world. Kayla created characters that now feel like family. I cared about their tiny habits and quiet moments just as much as I cared about the big emotional ones. They’re what made me fall in love with Eris and Denny, and they’re what made this book feel less like a story I was reading and more like a world I was lucky enough to spend some time in. There are books you finish and immediately move on from, and then there are books where the characters and story lingers. And I have a feeling Suncatcher is going to hold space in my heart for a very long time.
I will lead with the fact I actually created an account here just to tell everyone how much I loved this book :D
I have previously read the Wrestling Girls series by the author and those were already some of my favourite books, but this story has taken my breath away and touched my heart in ways I could have never imagined. I will try to avoid big spoilers but there are some things I just need to mention to explain how much this book meant to me.
Starting with the plot overall, it starts off on a wonderfully executed premise and develops into an enticing and engaging narrative that always makes you want to read just one more chapter. To be quite frank, not everyone will enjoy this kind of plot: Despite some darker ragged edges, it is overall cosy, warm and wholesome, and lacks much of the typical dramatic tension and angst or high stakes some readers prefer. Instead, the story takes us on a journey of deep character development, bonding and healing, with just enough obstacles to overcome to make things interesting. There is never any doubt that our two protagonists will manage to overcome anything that is thrown at them. Feeling so safe in a story is always a rare gift and I cannot appreciate it enough.
The characters are some of the best I have ever read. They are deep and rich and they really drive the entire plot on their own. Their genuine struggles and feelings are so palpable, it's like they were real people. The book also does an amazing job at depicting both the unique strengths and debilitating downsides of neurodivergences, which both protagonists struggle with in different ways, and manages to paint a hopeful and healing picture of the world, where differences are accepted and embraced and only end up amplifying love. And speaking of healing, as someone who struggles with adhd and its sometimes devastating impact on relationships myself, this story has been deeply healing and heartwarming on a much more personal level too, warming corners of my heart I am used to keeping to myself.
The romance itself goes from a nearly adversarial (at least from one side) starting point through incredibly sweet and fluffy moments of bonding to the strongest and healthiest bond I've seen depicted in a romance story so far (and I have read many!). There is open communication, confrontation of issues, working on yourself without compromising on who you are, and around all that, such clear and unrelenting dedication - or really, devotion - to each other that at the end, this book left me feeling like the author has a better understanding of pure, genuine, unconditional love than most other people on this planet.
This book made me cry and laugh and swoon and kick my feet. It kept me glued to the page in the middle of the night. It filled me with warmth and hope and love and a renewed determination to always be my best self - to take a page out of Denny's book and bring sunshine into other people's lives.
Some books make your day. Some books give you something to talk about for weeks to come. But some books change your entire outlook on life. I will never forget this story. It is the best book I ever read. Thanks to Kayla Faber for sharing this absolute gem with the world.
I had my eye on this book for ages and couldn't wait for it to come out. There are so few sapphic romance books with neurodivergent characters and the few I've read were all disappointing. Faber is AuDHD herself, so I was confident I'd finally see the good autistic and ADHD representation I was dying to read.
Suncatcher did not disappoint. It did, in fact, deliver way more that I could've hoped for.
Eris and Denny are so different it seems impossible they can coexist: Eris, solitary and sharp-edged, raised in the most unhealthy houseld, and constantly strugglying to make ends meet, and Denny, sunny, energetic, kind to a fault, born to the most loving parents whose wealth allowed her to grow up sheltered and carefree.
You start this book expecting their proximity to blow up in their faces, Denny's sparkly chaos to clash with Eris' fixation for order and silence and no human touch.
But the way their relationship gradully evolves and blossoms, so quietly you barely noticed, will blow you away and steal your heart. They're young (in their mid-twenties) and it shows, but they also display a maturity you don't see often, even in way older characters, in their interactions: there is a deep respect, open communication and unconditional support between them. They may not comprehend the other's struggles, but they never shame or diminish them; in fact, both Eris and Denny, in working to make the other's life easier and better, end up learning how to freely be themselves in the safe space they create together.
I won't say too much about how the romance developsm because that's a pleasure you need and deserve to experience.
I'll just say the writing is absolutely beautiful (particularly knowing the author is a native Italian). I highlighted so many lines that resonated so deeply with me and just as many that didn't but were just so stunningly worded (that bit about Denny being the flower that was always the wrong color and everyone wanted to change and how cleverly it connetced so many dots all across the story until the very end... Wow!).
The side characters all deserve a book of their own: the adorable Jordan twins (side note: I LOVED how matter-of-factly and sensitively Noah being trans was handled!); Rocco and his sizzling himbo homour; Denny's parents being dorky couple and parents goals; Blake (what a marvelous villain to this story), and finally the man who stole my heart without even trying: Will.
I will be re-reading this book a lot. This is more than a romance story: it's therapy for all of us who have ever felt unloved and not accepeted for who we are. If you're one of us, read this book and feel that love. You won't regret it.
I really enjoyed reading this, this is a grumpy x sunshine romance that takes place in a time where both main characters are healing from their past trauma. Both FMC's are also Neurodivergent which I thought was wonderfully written representation.
Vulnerable tender romances will always hold a special place in my heart given the journey that characters have to go through individually and together.
Denny and Eris are no exception to this, Denny finds Eris at such a vulnerable point in her life. She's going through an extremely dark time and just when she thinks that there's no hope for a person like her. Denny shows up in shining armour.
I love how the romance of this book is entwined with healing, it truly makes the relationship between Denny and Eris much more heartfelt. The trust that they built with one another and the consistency really is precious. Although they are complete opposites, they truly know each other and their needs in such an admirable way.
Eris comes from an unstable household, in which she was surviving rather than living. She isn't perfect by any means and Denny doesn't try to change her ways instead provides an environment and the safety that Eris needs to truly grow and begin healing. There are not enough people like Denny in the world.
Denny is the kind of girl who would give you the shirt off her back if she thought you needed it, seeing someone fall in love with all her quirks and herself was so beautiful. Eris doesn't underestimate Denny nor finds her as an obstacle instead Eris appreciates and sees her as she truly is aka an angel!
This is honestly such a sweet sapphic romance, I totally recommend reading it. It's important to note that this book touches upon some serious topics that include a toxic ex partner, abusive childhood, assault, SA, and others! Please look at trigger warnings before reading.
Suncatcher is the perfect read for Sapphic September! Denny is a Cambridge-educated florist, who grew up in a loving and wealthy Nigerian-British family. She finds Eris, who ran away from home as soon as she turned 18 after growing up in an abusive household, bleeding on the side of the road after a fight. On the surface they couldn't be more opposite and maybe that is why they work so perfectly together. Eris is Autistic and Denny has ADHD (neither one is diagnosed) and their strengths complement one another. But can they stay together despite all the things that threaten to separate them, from the aftermath of Denny's relationship with an abusive ex-girlfriend to Eris' trauma?
This book has so many things I love: found family, grumpy/sunshine, characters who have been through difficult situations and are portrayed as strong and brave. All the characters are developed in a way that makes it impossible not to love most of them (and loathe a few others.) The way that Denny and Eris accommodate one another's neurodivergence is really beautiful. It's also really funny - I'm definitely going to quote Denny and say "I have to go cosplay a human" all the time!
I think my favorite thing about this book is how respectfully the characters' various identities are treated. Denny's demisexuality is portrayed with a lot of sensitivity and care, and Eris' childhood trauma is important to the plot but never feels gratuitous.
If you enjoy sapphic romance, don't miss out on this book! It is one of my new favorites. It's the perfect book to read on a cozy autumn afternoon with a warm drink and maybe a treat from the bakery. Some serious topics come up so please be mindful of the trigger warnings.
Thank you so much to @kayla.faber.writes for the ARC (I'm sorry I'm a few days late) and congratulations on the release of a wonderful book!
I decided to try this out because of the neurodivergent and demisexual rep, and wow did this deliver more than I asked for. I am down bad for Denny and Eris! Their grumpy/sunshine relationship growth was so beautiful. Two undiagnosed neurodivergent people holding space for the other’s needs and accommodations. Incredible writing especially since for 1/3 of the book Eris has situational mutism, but still some of the best communication between characters.
Then there is the hurt/comfort and trauma healing that this relationship highlights. Eris had a rough upbringing that has made her closed off, guarded, and willing to break the law. Denny is what better word than Sunshine 😉. She had a great upbringing and is financially stable. She always believes the best in people, but it puts her in a position of being used by previous partners who cause her to doubt herself. Watching both of these characters grow and heal with one another wad absolutely beautiful.
Additionally Denny is demisexual and some of the words she says in this book i’ve never heard anyone else say about sex, but felt so understood as someone in the ace community. I loved how Eris and Denny were so transparent with one another.
I am notorious for finding books with this page length to be repetitive and too long. I tend to get bored. But i needed every page of this story.
Kayla Faber took many underrepresented sexualities, mental health conditions, lifelong traumas, wealth gaps, honestly the list is endless and spun them into the most touching love story of overcoming, being seen, learning to love, and healing.
The development of the story was chef's kiss! Meeting Eris at a low point in life, pick pocketing to survive, is found in the throes of a “f*ck Around and Find out” confrontation....... until, the literal sunshine that is Denny, all kind compassion, and overflowing with empathy, albeit a touch of “whimsy” is put perfectly in place to cross paths with Eris, parting the dark clouds of her current predicament.
Left in a deep state of shock Eris enters a period of select mutism.
The fact that in the first portion of the book Eris isn't even verbally communicating, yet they forged the deepest connection SENT ME Straight to my seat!
Watching them learn to love each other through crazy exes returning, ever present family grief, and childhood traumas... on top of being complete opposites and yet they complimented one another so perfectly!
Sun Catcher is a reminder that the clouds will part, and sun will shine once again!
This wasn't your regular shmegular sapphic romance type of book. These MCs were so unique and rewarding to experience. Totally opposite like spooky grayish Halloween but not in October or at night just your daily personality paired with the sweetest most caring and undeniably disgustingly selfless burst of sunshine type of person. Vegan/devouring carnivore, Upstanding citizen/Theft of survival and there's no one like each of them because they were ment to meet that night(IYKYK) This story is about, pain, resilience and growth as well as finding love in extremely unexpected people and situations. I absolutely enjoyed and recommend this book because it wasn't what you expected or even thought of before for a sapphic book. So for the theme of Flowers to me Eris is a Blooming Cactus 🌵 flower because she's prickly to everyone except Denny brings out her flower from the inside and Denny is a Lodus flower 🌼 one of the most beautiful flower the blooms. Thanks so much to the author and I can't wait for the next one! 10s across the board!
You know, I was told that they two would steal my heart… and that was 100% right. My heart is with Denny and Eric’s forever now. I absolutely loved this book SO. FUCKING. MUCH. Everything about this story has me in a chokehold. I didn’t wanna put it down. Eris, my sweet baby girl, I will burn the world down for you… actually I don’t have to because Denny will burn it down before I even leave the house. These two are literally made for each other and I love that you can feel it from the moment they meet. Even at the beginning when communication is difficult, Denny just almost automatically and instinctually knows exactly what Eris needs. It is absolutely amazing to read. I almost expected more spice, but hearing their stories and Denny being demisexual, then exploring each other and Eris being so patient with Denny, I literally couldn’t stop smiling. I could ramble on and on about this book but it would not do it justice. Please please PLEASE read this book when it’s released! You will NOT be disappointed.
This was such a wonderful, cosy Sapphic romance read that thoroughly warmed my heart.
We have Denny, who is a demisexual lesbian with undiagnosed ADHD and Eris, a masc bisexual with selective mutism and undiagnosed autism. Both of them have various struggles in life and things they’re trying to process and heal from, but the two of them together are an absolute joy to read about. Their relationship is beautifully written and honestly one of the healthiest relationships I’ve ever read about. The way they communicate, talk through their problems, show love and care for one another is such a treat and I really wish we saw more book couples like them.
I really appreciated how, despite some of the challenges each character faces, they don’t try and force each other to change - instead they uplift each other and step in to offer support when the other needs it. They are such a loving and wholesome couple.
There are also various heavy and complex themes explored in the book including toxic relationships, abusive parents, identity struggles, sexuality, financial status and class. All of this is done with a lot of consideration and care from Faber.
There are also some excellent side characters in this - Denny’s parents in particular are so precious.
I’ve never felt so deeply connected to a story before. As someone who is bisexual and can relate to certain aspects of ADHD, I found something within these pages that I didn’t even know I was looking for.
I laughed and cried, sometimes at the exact same time, during certain scenes. I grew so attached to these characters, their imperfections, their fears, and the way they navigate everything life throws at them.
But what I loved most was the feeling of being understood. Of finding little pieces of myself in fictional characters without having to explain or justify them.
Kayla Faber didn’t just tell me a story. She made me feel like I was living this adventure alongside Eris and Denny.
And now that I’ve finished the book, I’m left with that bittersweet feeling I know all too well: being incredibly happy to have experienced such a beautiful story, but not being quite ready to say goodbye to its characters.
Thanks so much to the author for the eARC. All thoughts are my own.
This was such a beautiful story. Kayla writes characters in a way that just has you hooked from the start. I adored Eris and Denny so much and I loved the ways they grew and changed over the course of this book.
This is very (feral) black cat x golden retriever and I absolutely LOVE that trope. These two are so different from each other, and yet they just work perfectly. They balance each other, they listen to and respect each other, they understand each other intrinsically. They’re just meant to be.
I also really loved the way all the side characters felt like real, fully realised people and not just there to fill a specific role that moves the story forward. They all had their own distinct personalities, lives outside this story.
This book will absolutely tug at your heart repeatedly, might even tear it open a little, but it will fill you with so much warmth and love and sunshine, too.
Eris has had a hard life, and is desperate for money when she resorts to pickpocketing - unfortunately the wrong man - when Denny stumbles across the scene and rescues her. Eris is traumatized and can't speak, but ball of sunshine Denny doesn't let that deter her in taking care of her new friend.
Wow, what a beautiful story! I loved every minute of these two lovely humans falling in love and healing. Both of them have struggled with various demons, but their unique experiences create a beautiful relationship filled with compassion, understanding, and emotional healing. Denny and Eris were perfect for each other, and I absolutely loved how they grew and gave each other space to figure out their relationship.
I recommend this if you love emotionally strong relationships, neurospicy FMCs, and the joy of finding your person.
Oh my goodness what a story. The beginning broke my heart but the wounds healed slowly but surely through every page I read.
Denny and Eris are perfect for each other. It felt even more special because my wife has autism and I have ADHD so it felt super close to home. I absolutely loved being able to relate to both of them.
You can feel the genuine love Denny and Eris give each other. Their words, actions, and the moments when they sat quiet together were so perfect.
I’m obsessed with Kayla Faber’s writing and I’m so grateful she gave me a chance to ARC review this book. If you need your soul healed, pick this book up immediately!
