I inspected the small glass orb in my hand and read the words engraved upon its Dark Root, Oregon, 1968. "Jillian, there's nothing inside," I said, shaking the globe. “You must view it before you go to sleep. The memory it contains will come to you in your dreams.” “What will I see?” I asked, staring deep into the crystal ball. “Secrets, Maggie. Secrets that should have come out long ago.” In the third installment of The Daughters of Dark Root series, Maggie's life is endangered by a malicious curse. Her only chance at saving herself and the life of her unborn child is to reveal the memories kept within a set of crystal globes. They alone hold the key to Dark Root’s secret past, and who she really is. Welcome to Dark Root--Magick. Mystery. Witchcraft. April Aasheim is the second oldest of six children. She spent her early years traveling the western part of the country with her mother and step-father. During this time she met a lot of interesting people and developed a love of 'characters'.
April is married and lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and her cat Boots.
Book 3 had me on the edge of my seat. It's a mystery trying to figure out who's bad in this wonderful witchy soap opera world and I can't wait to find out. The last few pages left me in tears. I'm heading now for book four.
I love the way the author has continued this series. Time moves slowly in Dark Root, but it goes on with or without you. So many things have happened in this series already, but we continue on to learn much more about the inner workings of the council of witches and the relationships between everyone. I love the idea of the memory globes that is brought in this book. It is a wonderful way to visit the past.
Oh how I hate a cliffhanger! I went from reading the first book and thinking that it was okay to now desperately needing to know what happens next. Shane, Michael, Jillian, Dora - everyone has secrets and it’s up to Maggie to learn Dark Roots history and break the curse. I’m on pins and needles until I read part two!
A really good read, alot of action and alot of back story that we needed. Armand is an interesting addition to the series and Merry and Michael's budding relationship is definitely suspect.
Proofreading needed to be better - as usual.
This story left me with more questions because of new introductions and of course the curse. I can't wait for the next one.
I read this whole book in a day. I was a bit put off the series by the last one, but this has pulled my interest right back. Shane has gone, but it's very suspicious. Michael is back, and I don't trust him at all. Merry seems to be a bit weird in this one, and all I want to know is: what is the whole truth?! So now I'll be stating the 4th installment!
Now it is getting interesting and the backstory begins to connect with the present day. It is well written and fairly well edited. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.
....in this book.. The past and present collide, to muddy the future. There is a lot for Maggie to sort through. So many things to figure out. Great story, on to the next!
Good story, though I'm realizing now that the middle of her books bog down a bit. The secrecy of everyone is starting to get to me. I understand it keeps the story going, but it's starting to be unrealistic. I'm on to the next though, so I guess I don't have that many complaints!
I absolutely hate ending each book but only because I love the characters and Dark Root! When I'm reading, the writer has transported me there.... it's magick in and of itself. Thank you for sharing this world with me, so now and again I can escape my own!
I can not wait to start the next book. I am so worried about what might happen that I bought all the books in this series to find out. I felt anger, fear and happiness. You really need to read these books.
Maggie is pregnant, and also cursed. Her aunt and friend Jillian will do almost anything to save her. It's a journey of enlightenment for us all, as we find out, along with Maggie, the secrets of Dark Root.
There is a lot happening in this book. Stories of the past and present intertwine. This book leaves you with lots of questions and wanting to delve right into the next book for answers.
Oh another great book I'm glad pArt 4 is out already. I'm gonna stArt it tonight. I'm so excited to see what's gonna happen next. Keep them coming please. 🌛🌕🌜
We learn more about Maggie Maddock's family history in this, the third book in the Dark Root series, thanks to some magical "snow globes" and a mysterious curse that has Maggie waking from a month-long coma-like sleep at the start of the book.
The curse, and the "snow globes," give Maggie -- and therefore is -- a window into the past -- what really happened with Maggie's father, Armand? Why is Larinda so evil? And what's up with Aunt Dora's weird accent, anyway?
But if Maggie doesn't absorb the memories in all the snow globes before her baby is born, the consequences are severe: Larinda will get to take her baby for the first six years of his life!
And yet somehow Maggie keeps putting it off..?? Really?? This I found hard to buy. Wouldn't she binge-absorb the things?? I sure would, if I knew Larinda would get my baby for 6 years if I didn't get to all of them before the birth!
These and other unexplained issues niggled at me. Like Maggie's eye-rolling immaturity when it comes to her communications with Shane. I know conflict makes for good drama, but sheesh, it does make me wonder about Maggie's intelligence..
Still, the relationships between the Maddock sisters are fun (I loved the reveal about Ruth Anne that Aasheim slipped in), and it's always entertaining to see what will happen next, both in the human relationships and in terms of the laws of magick.
One pet peeve: I wish an editor would correct the grammatical errors. "She came with Eve and I" should be "She came with Eve and me." One wouldn't write "She came with I," and the same applies when you add "and" in front of "I."
Still, as long as April Aasheim keeps writing 'em, I'll keep reading 'em!
I cannot wait for the next one!! with everything boiling to the top of the cauldron, I feel very sorry for Maggie. None of her sisters has what she has. The supernatural shows itself to her without her having to do any spell. merry and Eve have Armand as their father, but everything happens to Maggie. who is there to turn to who knows what is really happening? she was in the Netherworld, how she got there we don't know. she is cursed, but at least we should know if it came from a spell she did or done to her. leave who did it for the other books. larinda had it easy because the baby was early. no one can pin point when a baby comes. what happened if Maggie lost the baby? I think it would be a blessing if she did lose the baby because it would have given her more time to find out the snow globes. she could always have more children with someone else, maybe Shane. The pact would be void unless larinda comes up with another plan. I still wonder what is with Michael and why is he back in town and changing things. maybe Shane did it on purpose because he knew something was going to happen to him and Michael would be there to comfort her since he is the baby's father. what about Juliana's ghost? it could have been a warning about Shane or it could be something she needs to find. Shane told her to remember he loves her. Something definitely fishy and taking Armand's hat? what if Shane is Armand? it cannot be a coincidence.
Wow, it seems each book gets darker and darker. And yet, I feel as if they are just skimming the surface of the depths. Perhaps I have read too many books within this genre and expect this and it may be why I feel this bit of lacking in these books.
Now don't get me wrong, I still love them and really enjoy the read. Hence the reason I can't seem to put them down. Especially this one and now I am biding my time with a novel that I will most likely put down the minute I can get my hands on part two. For this reason I can still give her 5 stars.
Her characters I would like to learn more depth of their story, I just feel as if they are more complex than what we know but then this might be again back to the skimming of the depths that I mentioned before. The story arch is well thought out and one of the reasons she has kept me reading these books. I just want a bit more meat with my meal.
This is a well written series of a family/town that focuses on three witchy sisters with unique powers and abilities that just keeps getting better and better. While I was hooked from the first book, I often felt like it teased with hints of romance and unfinished story lines however this one certainly delivers on almost every front. While there were some minor issues with typos and missing words, it all took a backseat to the desire to keep on reading. It's a hard book to put down and a fun ride! The characters are more fleshed out and likable, especially noteworthy are Michael and Armand's development ---the storyline just keeps luring you in and just makes you want more and more. Can't wait for the next one!
Great Series! This is a great series; this is the third book in the Daughters of Dark Root series by April Aasheim. These books do need to be read in order so you can understand what is happening. There are three sister witches who have unique powers. Maggie knows that she has been cursed and her life is in danger. She knows that her only chance of salvation is to reveal the memories kept within the crystal balls. If you are looking for a great book that will keep you up late reading then you need to read this book. I can’t wait until the next book in this series comes out.
This one has a real cliffhanger ending. You are warned. I hate having to wait for another installment. I still have it at 4 stars because for its genre, it is easily read and has some unique plot lines. The only negative is our protagonist is ruled by her emotions and makes unfortunate mistakes in her life. I'd like to see a bit more maturity develop in her character. She acts about 14.
