Ear Infections: A Revolution in Pediatric Prevention

Rate this book
Your Child's Ear Infection Is Not Just an Ear InfectionBy age three, most children have had at least one. We treat them as a routine a course of antibiotics, a few rough nights, done. But what if that "routine" is quietly reshaping how a child hears, speaks, and develops during the most critical window of their life?

Ear infections are the number one reason children are prescribed antibiotics, and one of the most overlooked threats to early development. Persistent fluid muffles hearing exactly when a child's brain is wiring itself for language, while repeated antibiotics reshape the gut and feed a growing resistance crisis. Yet we keep treating the same infections over and over, one round at a time.

Meticulously sourced and impossible to unsee, this book asks the question pediatric medicine has been too busy treating symptoms to what if we prevented the problem instead? The answer is a simple, decades-old solution that has been sitting in plain sight since 1954.

Matt Steele is a former special education teacher who worked with children struggling with speech, language, and learning delays. It was his own son's autism diagnosis that sent him into the research literature.

He did not find a cause there. This book makes no claim that ear infections or antibiotics cause autism. What he found instead was something separate, and badly under-examined: recurrent ear infections in the first years of life, dismissed as routine while their consequences compound.

He is the son of Robert J. Steele, M.D., who practiced medicine for four decades, wrote this book's foreword, and worked on it with him before his passing, mere days before publication. What began as one father's search became a case for rethinking how we treat childhood's most common infection.
