Picking up from the heartwarming story of Ty and Addi’s relationship in the first Orphans book, the couple has settled in nicely in Abilene, Texas. Addi takes a job as a librarian, bringing stability and purpose to her new life. Taylor County Sheriff Hightower is glad to have Ty Hampton serving as his deputy, especially because Ty also carries the authority of a U.S. Deputy Marshal. Ty and Addi have become an integral part of the community, helping others and doing their part to keep the town safe. Restless for excitement, Addi disguises herself and steps into danger. After a shootout, her daring actions earn her a new Kid Lightning. Meanwhile, from the crowded slums of New York City to the dusty streets of Texas, two orphaned children fight for the one thing they have never truly a place to belong. Cliff Sutton has survived by stealing, running, and trusting no one, until he meets Trish, a sharp-eyed girl whose courage matches his own. When the two are swept onto an Orphan Train and sent west, they face separation, fear, and uncertain futures, but their loyalty to each other refuses to break. Dressing as Kid Lightning, Addi gets into big trouble and has a serious decision to make. Ty and Addi go through some turbulent times and unexpected events that test themselves and their relationship.
